Nessebar is a jewel in the Black seas crown and is like stepping back in time .It was like walking through a film set.It dates back to the 4th century an is full of lovely old buildings. It has loads of resturants and shops and they were cheaper than Sunny Beach 10minutes away by bus.Wear comfortable shoes as the cobbles are very uneven. There is a quiet beach behind the passenger terminal which is shingle, but it has a lovely breeze which makes the heat more bearable.I cant wait to return to this fabulous old town which I have wanted to visit since I first saw it in a Yugotours brochure about 15 years ago.

Nessebar is the Jewel in the crown of the black sea resorts. It dates from the 4th century and is like stepping into a film set.It is linked to the mainland by a causeway which took us 7 minutes to walk to from the hotel. There is a maze of cobbled streets with lots of shops and resturants. There are many old building and churches which are now art gallerys. Its 10 minutes bus ride from Sunny beach but is a world away. There is a shingle beach near the passenger terminal which is quiet and has a lovely breeze.Parasols are 5 levs to rent but quite a few people were buying their own for 8-9 levs.Nessebar seemed cheaper than Sunny beach for clothing, bags, drinks etc.I would recommend here for couples or families with older children.just 2minutes walk from the Marina Hotel was a funfair and over the road was some shops

We stayed in the old town of Nessebar which is separated from the new town by a causeway and a 20 minute walk. The old and new are as different as day and night. The old town has a number of restaurants and cafes and everything seems to shut down after 11:30 pm so if it is entertainment you are after then it isn't the place for you.

Best restaurants we found were Romantic, Neptun, Ponko, Smokina ,Denitsa and Czech Restaurant. Avoid Perla, Hemingway's and Impress on the seafront. All the menus are virtually the same with the only variation being in presentation, quality and prices.Cafe Caprice is nice for a drink. No pubs at all. A pint of beer costs about 50 pence and local spirits (brandy, gin,) 40 pence. All very drinkable.

Old Nessebar beach is small, uncrowded, sand and shingle but perfect if all you want is to relax in the sun. New Nessebar has a lovely sandy beach with safe swimming but is crowded.

This was our first visit to Bulgaria and we would go again although I have to say that we found many of the staff in the shops and cafes to be surly and unpleasant, bordering on the rude. They have an awful lot to learn about tourism, unlike their Turkish neighbours where the opposite is the case. A smile and a thank you were both rarities!

Bulgaria is dirt cheap and it is hard to spend money but all that is likely to change if it joins the EU in 3 years - so go now! Warning - do not change your money in the street bureaux as you are sure to get ripped off. We saw this happening to so many people and the authorities don't want to know. They seem to turn a blind eye to it. The First Investment Bank in the old town centre has good opening hours and gives an excellent rate with no commission.

Weather was iffy when we went in August. One day not only did it rain but was cold! Resort was ok. Everyone assumes that you are German and brits still have a bit of a novelty value!! Eating and drinking out very cheap. Shopping for fake designer goods gets tiresome - its mostly tat. Glad we tried it but wouldn't rush back.

We loved Old Nessebar. The culture, history, churches, museum, loads to see. The beaches are lovely and peaceful and everywhere is so clean. There are lots of restaurants but no bars as such. The resort entertainment is next to nil, although at the weekends some restaurants do traditional bulgarian music but I think this is how they like it and so did we. The shopping is fantastic and the people were lovely. We would definitely go back and stay in Old Nessebar.

Stayed in New Nessebar area. We were there in September and it was nice and quiet (which is what we wanted). Area around hotel clean and safe. Within easy walking distance of Old Nessebar which is quaint with lots of places to try and spend money. Beach clean with lots of life-guard stations. Condition of sea demonstrated using flag system (explained at each station). Water sports/ pedaloes available if required.

Very quite in August 2004. Some bars and restaurants open along coast towards Radva. Paths not accessible for pushchairs/wheelchairs. Will improve with time as just started to be developed.

The beach is quite nice although hotel made a charge for sun shades and loungers and since no other shade on beach was quite expensive for a family of five. Why pay 7 levs each when pool side shade seats free?

Nessebur is split into two very different areas. The new town is very busy with lots of bars, restaurants and shops to cater for every need. Traffic can be a bit of a problem but the local police force do a sterling job removing illegally parked cars helping to keep traffic flow moving.

The beach is sandy and slopes gently into the warm waters of the Black Sea making it ideal for children to play - down side is that it can get extremely crowded. Snorkelling is wonderful with literally hundereds of marine life to see.

There is a regular bus service that takes you to Sunny Beach - more tourist shops or Bourgas which costs only a few pence should you want to do more than just tourist shopping. Taxis are everywhere and are cheap, quicker than the bus and sometimes have air conditioning - haggle with the driver and agree a price first before you go on your journey!

You can take the mini-train from the beach to Old Nessebur where you can wander around this very picturesque little town, but again it is very popular. Lots of restaurants, bars and tourist shops here too. It is worth taking a boat trip over to Sunny Beach to get an idea of just how Black the Black Sea really is.

Old Nessebar is very interesting, but once you had walked round it once that was it! Very small! New Nessebar is very handy for walking or taking the local bus (very cheap).

Also very reasonable for eating out but friends warned us to watch out at Fish Restaurants as they charge by weight, not plate.

Watch also when changing currency - we were told Post Office was good, but found rate very bad. We used local bank which had excellent rate of exchange, and Marina Beach Hotel was only half percent higher.

Excellent holiday all round.

This resort was quite quiet but very nice. It is close to Sunny Beach so if you want some night life its only about 10 mins in a taxi.

Old Town is really nice with boats leaving regulary to Sunny Beach. Old Town is very beautiful and steeped in history if thats your sort of thing.

It also has lots of shops which are open till all hours and everything is very cheap. The beach was very clean and well looked after, if you could get to it as it was so busy. I would go back here again no probs.

Scala is a fabulous resort.

We wanted somewhere to chill out after a hectic year at university and Scala definitely did the trick.

There is lots to do - we really enjoyed the sightseeing coach trip around the island for around 30 euros - you enough time at each spot and it saves money on car hire.

Melasani lake is jaw dropping at right time of day. Argostoli worth a visit too - the bell tower cafe is an experience! Scuba diving was a memorable experience too and can be booked in the town.

Food was tasty - dont think we ate anything disappointing - most of restaurants are fairly similar. Irish bar and Monica's are suave late bars if you like your cocktails.

This was by far the best holiday I have been on.

Nessebur is lovely and full of character. There are a lot of restaurants and bars. Some with lovely sea views. The menus and the service was good. At the town entrance was a little man in national costume playing on what looked like bagpipes. The streets are cobbled. There was hardly any beach. I dont think that Nessebur is suitable for little children. There are boat trips to Sunny Beach. Also the buses run regularly to and from Sunny Beach and other places. I cant wait to go back next year.

I'm glad I went but wouldn't go back - I think the main reason was because it was sooo busy! I found it was quite touristy and most of the shops sell the same thing. But I'm not into the average holiday makers things so I would imagine most people would enjoy Nessebur. I really liked Old Nessebur but again it was really busy - both night and day. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had gone Sept time provided the weather was good.
However if you have a car it's a great location to be able to explore inland and the north and south coast.
Beach was clean but also packed! Plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Old Nessbur is particulary beautiful, best visited in the evening as it is a popular place for day trips. In the evening it is still busy, but at least you can browse the variety of shops and stalls much more easily. Many of the restaurants have sea views and we tried a number of places and the food was lovely. The Bulgarian national dishes are very tasty, but they do pizzas and a wide range of chicken dishes (and chips!), if you prefer more familiar meals.

There is an old fairground in New Nessebur, a wide range of shops, bars, restaurants and clubs in Old Nessebur. There are a number of new small play areas for the young children. The average age as you walk around the streets seems to be 18-35.

There are ATM's available in Old & New Nessebur which were easy to use.

The hotel is situated in New Nessebar which hosts a good variety of shop and resturants. The beach is about 5 mins walk from the hotel through the park and is one of the nicest beaches I've seen, very clean, great if you've got kids.

Old Nessebar is really fascination; there are load of nice restaurants and plenty of shops. Take time to walk round, we managed to see something different almost every time we went.

Nessebar is a bit more relaxing than Sunny Beach but if you want the hussle and bussle, Sunny Beach is only a 40min walk, quicker if you walk along the beach, 60 stonkis on the bus, or 10 Leva on the boat, or 15 Leva in a taxi, but make sure to agree your price before getting in.

Beach is sandy and very clean, lifeguards are in attendance and do an excellent job.

There is virtually no free beach space in front of the hotels, parasols line the area and you pay accordingly. There are plenty of shops and places to eat in new Nessebur but the place to visit is the old town across the causeway.

It's steeped in history and also full of small shops and stalls. From the causeway you can get a bus to nearby Sunny Beach.

Bus fares are very cheap.

Nessabur or New Nessabur as opossed to the tourist trap of the old town provides excellent value for money. Sunny Beach is only 5mins away by bus, they run every 15mins and cost pennies. Restaurants in New Nessabur are excellent especially Katerinas, they have chickens roasting on a spit outside the front door, they are situated just off the main street. The beaches are excellent well patrolled by lifeguards, and are very clean. All in all the best resort in Bulgaria if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday. I'll be Back!!

Old Nessebar is a 'must' to visit, it is like stepping back in time. Lots of small arcade type shops selling all sorts of souvenirs, fake designer gear, silver jewellery etc.

When out walking in old Nessebar ensure you have strong footwear to negotiate the cobbled streets. Litter did not seem to be a problem despite the large amount of Tourists.

Local Resort entertainment was low key, just a few night clubs in the vicinity of the Hotel. Plenty of excellent local Restaurants (some with entertainment)serving various sea food dishes. The local beach adjacent to the hotel was well maintained complete with Lifeguard.

Do not leave valuables or bags unattended on the beach as they may not be there on your return! Suggest a lot more effort is required by holiday companies/hoteliers to improve food quality. Would not visit resort again until this is sorted.

One main downfall is the road into Nessebar/Sunny Beach - long walk and had to use a buggy for 4 year old - uneven pavements (when there was a pavement), could be extremely dangerous with very fast traffic. Taxi drivers did take advantage of this, tending to charge double after midnight. Beware, we previously agreed a price with taxi to the airport, but on dropping us off he increased his price and would not budge!!!!!

Glad, in the end, that we did not get our first pick of hotels, which was in Sunny Beach because this is just a Blackpool with the Sun!!!

On the whole this was an excellent holiday and seriously considered returning this year but wanted to experience something else.

The resort is a few miles south of Sunny Beach at Ravda. A lot of hotel and private construction work is underway to cater for the increased tourism but workers seem to try not to inconvenience holidaymakers. People were friendly and helpful. We hired a car but with the low cost of taxi fares, we lost out quite a bit. Suggest try taxi's first. Nessobar was a beautiful town and we enjoyed some lovely meals at the Flagman Fish Restaurant in old Nessebar. Overall, lovely country as yet virtually unspoiled by tourism and well worth a visit.

The resort of Nessebar was very nice and tidy, but had problems with travel.

The buses were frequant from hotel to Nessebar but from nessebar to hotel there were hardly any so most of time we had to walk. There is a train that is supposed to travel from Nessebar to sunny beach but only went half way so we had to pay back to Nessebar which was a bit of a rip off with false advertising and driver speaking no English, but we eventually got a frequent bus from Nessebar to Sunnybeach-Sunnybeach to Nessebar.

We didn`t eat in nessebar as every day we knew we would have buffet ready back at the hotel so I cannot really coment on food just snacks, all people were polite in nessebar and I would visit this place again if I were ever to go back to Bulgaria.

We stayed in Nessebar between the new and old towns. The nearest beach is quite small and very crowded with sunbeds and parasols (charge payable). There is not much free space for children to play or people to wander.
There are plenty of bars and restaurants and shops both in the old town and new.

The area where we stayed was very clean and pleasant with paths and flowerbeds laid out and plenty of seating overlooking the sea and also children's play areas.
It is very interesting in the old town with many old churches and other buildings.

There is a mini train that runs from Old Nessebar to the beginning of Sunny Beach. You need to get on to another mini train to get to the centre of Sunny Beach or it is a long walk.
The pavement alongside the road between Sunny Beach and Nessebar is not very good with many cracked and uneven slabs and dangerous manhole covers with large holes. Also some street lights were out so you need to take great care when walking at night.

Nessebar is much quieter and more relaxing than Sunny Beach.

Old Nessebur is not a beach resort but a World Heritage town steeped in history, a maze of narrow cobbled streets and alleys with a surprise round every corner. There are so many little churches, some are now art galleries, and ruins from as far back as the 5th century. No hotels with pools or even outside space but marvellous for the older tourist who likes to eat in comfort in many different little restaurants with friendly service and good food. The beach is about a half hour stroll along a flat promenade and there are miles of golden sands when you get there, with plenty of sun beds, brollies and bars, one even had dancing girls up on the bar, and deep settees to relax into. A little road train runs every few minutes if you don't like to walk. I am very much looking forward to my next visit!

Hotel beach is not acessible for people with walking difficulties as there are steps, and not like the brochure states, (4 tiers of 10 metal steps down the hillside). In 2 weeks we never sat on the beach as it was always covered in seaweed and temperature meant odour, but complex pools adequate and spacious enough, with plenty of free sunbeds, but beach you have to pay for them.

Being slightly out of the main centre you would need to catch bus or taxi, no problem as both are cheap.

Despite my praise for the hotel I wouldn't return, but I would try somewhere with a bigger beach area in Bulgaria. The natives where always friendly, and never found any intimidating area.

It was my Wife's idea to get a last minute to Bulgaria... I was not keen at all and decided that I was not going to like it before I even got there!
How wrong I was.....

We went and checked out the Sunny beach Resort and knew instantly that we were in the better location of Nessebar.

The beach is 5 min walk even though it states 60meters from the waters edge(which is true...just rocky though). I would relate the beach and it's quality to that of Alcudia, Majorca.

Plenty to see and do...just about everynight we ended up in the Historic old town of Nessebar, if you go you will understand why.

If you do book last minute and do not get transfers included take sterling notes with you as you will get a better deal than you would if you were paying with Lev's.

Old Nessubur was amazing although it did get very busy on an evening. We found some lovely restaurants especially if you like fish.

My only warning is if you have walking difficulties then you would have to pay out regularly for taxi's as the pavements and walkways leave a lot to be desired!

Nessebar itself is undergoing a huge amount of building work - as is most of Bulgaria - and many of the roads have not caught up with the building work so many side roads are dirt and gravel. However the centre of Nessebar has a very nice park and a pleasent wide path along the sea front.
Only disappointment is that the beach outside the hotel had no space for umbrellas etc as it is all taken up with resident sun loungers - 30leva per day! However there is a very nice beach just 500m away which is all free!

Nessebar is undergoing some building construction at present, but it certainly does not detract at all from visiting the area now. The general cleanliness of the area is good - there are obviously some parts where demolition is underway, but the main residential/shopping area is far and away more clean than back in England.

Resort entertainment was generally low key. We holidayed at the end of the season when a lot of entertainment nightspots had already closed for the season but as we were wanted a quiet relaxing holiday that didn't affect our enjoyment. Sampling the delicious restaurants in Old Nessebar was of more interest to us!

We have stayed in Nessbar a few times so know the resort well. As with all Bulgarian towns etc there is some mess in vacant plots and run down areas - but this is Bulgaria and they are trying nationwide to 'tidy up'. As we stayed in mid October most entertainment, restaurants etc were closed for end of season. But we managed to find good restaurants etc - but whatch out for inflated prices in the Old Town - you will pay double for food, drinks etc.
One interesting fact was that there were tractors on the beach piling the sand into huge mounds, this is to save the sand from being washed into the sea during winter storms. But we still managed to use the beach and paddle in the sea. As with all Black Sea resorts there were jellyfish, although they are the harmless type so no stings!

hmm Bulgaria, were to start?!

We spent 1 week in a hotel 10 minutes walk from the old town of Nessebar. This place is lovely to look at, full of ancient ruins and lovely views, sparkling coble-stone streets and unique and interesting buildings and architecture.

It’s also full of annoying touts trying to sell you everything under the sun, you can’t walk down the street without being asked to enter every bar, restaurant and shop. There are a lot of gypsy pick-pockets, I caught a girl with her hand right inside my pocket on the first day, whether she just wanted to touch my bottom we’ll never know, but I’d recommend you keep everything in front of you.

There are lots of interesting looking antique stores but don’t be fooled, their all replicas that have been left out in the sun too long to make them look old, original German Iron Cross war medal for 50Lev anyone? Lol.

The foods and drink in the area is a bit of a mixed bag, you definitely get what you pay for in Bulgaria. You can drink and eat for as little as you like but don’t expect good food or good service. And even paying a little more doesn’t always guarantee the latter, they have difficulty comprehends starters & mains and frequently bring you stuff in the wrong order or something bring your main meals 10-20 minutes apart from each over and look shocked when you complain?!

My only advice is to try and avoid places that have pictures of the food outside (not always easy), look for where the locals eat and be friendly to the waiters and you should be ok. Even the most expensive restaurants are still cheap by our standards so just experiment, you’ll rarely get any shocking bills!

The local beach is lovely, not much there but nice and relaxing, plenty of affordable parasols and cheap Bulgarian booze.

Overall I enjoyed my stay in Bulgaria, not sure if I’ll be going again, but don’t let that put you off, if you need a cheap as chips week away then it’s perfect.

and PS don’t go near Sunny Beach, it’s a nightmare – you have been warned!

Nessebar old and new offer a more Bulgarian holiday environment than Sunny Beach. If your after night life and entertainemnt Sunny Beach is the place. For romantic walks around the town and along the sea front with more eateries than you can imagine then Nessebar is just right. The buss between around the bay costs just 50p!
