I think the review on the Meridian needs an update as much of what has appeared is from before the refurbishment and therefore no longer relative.
The Meridian stands out as one of the best hotels in its immediate area, a view mirrored by many of the locals. This area is less manic than the centre of Sunny Beach but there's an abundance of restaurants, bars and shops.
The exterior and interior is modern, its well staffed and has an envious restaurant position - the panoramic Meritsa Restaurant on the 11th floor which overlooks the surrounding hotels, pools, mountains, sea (Sunny Beach and Nessebar) and bars. You can choose to sit inside or out to eat, there are a number of TVs playing music channels and the restaurant is split between an active side and a more sedate side.
The food seemed to be an issue for many despite the variety on offer, but I think this relates more to Bulgarian food rather than specifically the food from the hotel. Breakfast was almost the same each morning but offered plenty of variety:
5 choices of cereals
5 items of fruit
3 choices of fruit juice
6 offerings of simple salad/cold meats/cheese
Omelettes and pancakes cooked continuously
Eggs (either scrambled or fried)
Plum tomatoes or beans
Bacon (composite), saveloys and continental sausages
A selection of breads and cakes, jams etc
Tea bags, Nescafe and percolated coffee.
If you wanted toast you had to be prepared to wait.
The selection above was available in both sides of the restaurant.
Evening meal often consisted of at least 3 main choices (e.g. fish, pork stew, veal, lasagne, chicken curry) with supporting vegetables, salads etc plus an additional freshly cooked offering e.g. Chicken skewers. For deserts another five offerings of fruit, 5 cakes and 5 flavoured ice-creams.
The rooms were modern and well furnished with shower, air-con and towels changed daily. Each room had a balcony, TV with some British channels and a fridge for the room bar.
The hotel sports an impressive lobby, games room, 24hr bar where seats extend out to the swimming pool area, 24hr internet cafe, property sales room, tattoo room, doctor, safe deposit area plus a la carte restaurant on the ground floor. There was always plenty of staff including security, porters, reception, bar staff, chefs and waiters/waitresses. All were friendly and only the language barrier restricting conversation. It’s regularly cleaned plus the reps were very visible. It’s a short walk to the beach/sand dunes, close to the bus stop (at rear) and served by the local beach train.
I'd give thumbs up to the hotel but with a few complaints:
The 4 lifts were inadequate - we found walking down 10 flights of stairs was quicker than waiting for the lift.
The pool and poolside area were too small with resulted in guests claiming their sun loungers before breakfast.
A word of advice on choice of rooms, those facing the sea will see the first rays of sun but will also have the noise of the nightlife until 1-3am. Those at the back of the hotel will receive the evening sun without any of the noise from bars with a reasonable outlook.

| said: If you’re going to Sunny Beach then I can just about recommend this hotel. The Meritsa and Meridian have combined and the whole complex is now known as The Meridian and upgraded to 4* (See my report on Hotel grading in Sunny Beach report).
The refurbishment that took place over the winter of 2004/2005 has been rushed and in some places the hotel is a little rough around the edges, but in general to a good standard.
Some of the bathrooms have yet to be finished and we were unlucky to get one of these, but were told by others that the completed bathrooms were very good.
The rooms are a good size with plenty of storage for your clothes. One side of the hotel overlooks the pool, which is just about adequate for the size of the hotel.
If you’re on this side, or to the rear of the hotel, then it is fairly quiet, but if you’re on one of the other two sides, it can be a little noisy up to about 1am, so take your earplugs.
The roof top restaurant gives a good panoramic view over Sunny Beach, and Nesebar, but I cannot recommend the food, not even the breakfast.
The reception staff are very good at their job and very friendly and helpful as are the staff in the bars and the chambermaids.
The staff in the roof top restaurant are not so friendly or helpful. The hotel is in the southern part of Sunny Beach (the best part) and about a 10 min walk from the beach, and has a number of very good restaurants all within 200yds.
The corner pub, which is also part of the Meridian complex, is very good and cheap.

It was in a brilliant location bars and clubs surrounded us,and there surprisingly we didnt hear very much noise.
The food was fab and the staff were very friendly (even though they didnt speak much english) there was not much hotel entertainment but while the children entertaind themselvs the aduls could sit in the bar and watch the kids at the same time which was ideal for us.

| said: Arrived at the newly refurbished hotel hot knowing what to expect.I was pleasantly suprised at the beginning of the holiday but that wore off.Hotel was very clean sheets and towels changed regularly bathroom did however seem small in relation to the size of the room.Although we had air conditioning it didn`t work that well so it was a bit hit and miss.Food was generally ok but can only comment on breakfast as it was so cheap to eat out at night we didn`t bother dining in the hotel at night.
The location of the hotel was the real problem for me as it`s bang next door to a karaoke bar and when you`re only on the second floor it`s an absolute nightmare, you either have the door open to get some air and everyone singing some crap karaoke song or close it and rely on the poor air conditioning???I would have imagined it was quieter on the other side of the hotel or higher up.
Entertainment was a man and wife(I think) who sang quite a lot of Boney M and Carpenters songs as did most of the bulgarian restaurants...
So summing up I wouldn`t go here again but only because of the noise issue when you want to sleep you really want to sleep...

| said: The Maritsa has now been redeveloped and renamed to the Meridian. It is absolutely lovely! Hotel is now 4 star and was worth every penny of our holiday price. Rooms are modern and almost brand new. Spacious and well furnished.
Hotel is gorgeous with lovely pool and nice resteraunt. Half board food was a bit boring, we went out most nights instead. It's so cheap there you struggle to spend any money at all! Only complaint is that the pool area is a little small for size of hotel and entertainment is non-existant but being so close to the beach and so many bars this didn't really matter.
I read reviews that the hotel was very poor last year. I can only assume that a lot of mony was spent doing it up because it is the best hotel i've ever stayed in!! Only problem being its close proximaty to bars means a lot of loud music until about 1am, not too bad though and nothing a pair of ear plugs won't solve. Otherwise just stay out til the early hours, you'll still only have spent a tenner!

| said: Arrived at hotel Maritza 2am. Took bags to room but only needed to take 1 look before we were back out the door heading for the first bar open.
Went back to face the rooms which were very very basic- blue carpet which was cut with a stanley knife and left unfinished, few storage, main light did not work, bathroom newly furnished was ok. Did get used to hotel room as days went on.
The cleaning staff did a first rate job.
Lifts were small and shabby and broke when too many people were in they were stopping in between floors.
Reception area clean and ok but as for staff at the desk they were more interested in talking to themselves than us standing there.
Pool was clean and big. Many sunbeds but had to pay 4leva.
Went b&b, so the breakfast was set out as a cold buffet but not a a lot of varitey and was the same for 2 weeks.
Did not see any entertainment at the hotel itself but pubs and restaurants surrounding it made up for that.
Was located 150meters from the beach which was a short walk through the shops/bars.
Ideal beach for holiday makers wanting to do water sports or sunbathe second to none!

| said: The location of this hotel was pretty good, only 10 minutes walk from the beach, and a short train ride to the centre.
However the hotel itself was very poor you can see why they are having it refurbished next year, we feel this hotel should not be allocated out to holiday makers wishing to enjoy a holiday with their families.
The hotel staff were very ignorant and unhelpful.
The food was very poor.
The entertainment was non existent.
The hotel rooms were tiny and very basic (2 cushions for a child’s bed!!)
I have got to say this is the most inadequate filthy hotel I have ever stayed in and would urge anyone that is thinking of going to Bulgaria on holiday to not stay in this hotel.

| said: I went with a group of 24, all staying in the Hotel Maritza. The hotel was very basic but very, very clean, maids were in the rooms every day to change towels and bedding. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and couldnt do enough to help.
I didnt eat in the resturant apart from breakfasts but what I ate and from other members of my party the food was lovely. As for entertainment I have put 1 because there wasnt any entertainment.
The Hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the beach and 10 mins from the centre of Sunny Beach. Even though we went at the beginning of the season alot of the resturants etc were already open, sunny beach did become more lively in our 2nd week.
I would vidit the Maritza again especially as it is going to be refurbished and extended next year.

They catered mostly for Germans.
My husband saw mice running around the reception area.
Really horrible place.
