The rooms are small, so best not to ask for a room with 2 queens unless you need separate beds. When we had one king bed it felt much more spacious. If you're a Starwood preferred guest (free to join) they will put you on the preferred guest floor. High floor and I think there were slippers etc, and a teddy to cuddle...aww!
The pool is small but cute. There are nice padded loungers at the pool, misters to keep you a bit cooler, and also iced face cloths at the poolside bar. It's a nice relaxing area (and close to the elevators for the rooms), but the pool really isn't for swimmers. We didn't even bother going in!
The hotel is withing 5-10 mins walk from the strip. We often popped in the side door of Barbary Coast and stopped off for a 99cent frozen margarita! You can also enter Bally's via their sportsbook entrance, which is almost just across the road. This is close to their shopping area, monorail, and there's also some food outlets. Going away from the strip there's Ellis Island not too far away, and Meridian, Platinum and Tuscany are also close by. I think Platinum and Meridian may be non-gaming though, so not really worth a visit. There's a steak special at Ellis Island though for about $6, and they also have their own brewery, cheap food and cheap drinks. The American Casino Guide also has coupons.
When we stayed at Westin, they also had an offer whereby if you bought $25 worth of chips in the casino they gave you $40 (ie $15 extra). This is a once only offer, or maybe once every 6 months. There's also cheap roulette and craps sun-thurs (I hope there still is!).
We didn't investigate the restaurants in the hotel at all. Well we did get some pound cake from starbucks, but that's about it. Cocktail service was quite good when we were playing craps.
There's also a petrol station very close by for snacks etc. Ellis Island also apparently has fantastic pizza (metro pizza) although I am yet to taste it! It's on my to do list for this year!
All in all this really isn't a bad place to stay, if the price is right! In saying that, I like the pool, but I would still stay here if I was splitting my trip between more than one hotel.
