Just back from another great holiday in Gran Canaria but what is happening at the Barcelo Las Margaritas ?? This is our 4th year at the Barcelo and although we had a great time standards are definitely slipping. We always stay Self Catering in the Las Margaritas Suites (apartments), so my comments will relate to these not the hotel.

Plus points first:
Very speedy check in at 9:45pm - we were the only ones checking in as we got a private taxi from the airport.

Got the apartment that we had requested via email – high floor with views over the apartments pool and down to Maspalomas (not on the other side overlooking the hotel – those of you who have stayed here will know why!!)

Spotless apartment with towels and sheets changed regularly (felt like almost every other day)

Sun shone for the full fortnight

Enthusiastic Animation team – the lads got involved in footie, water polo, volley ball etc.,

Handy pool bar for snacks & drinks

Pool towels available at 20E deposit (80E back on last day)

Able to keep apartment until 1800 on day of departure (extra 24E)

Courteous, polite & efficient reception staff

Sun shone for the full fortnight

Negative points:
Maintenance and gardening standards are slipping. Parts of the complex are starting to look really shabby and unloved. The lawns were only mown towards the end of our two weeks and never saw the sprinklers on. As a result plants were drying out but weeds were thriving. It’s a pity as the gardens surrounding the suites are laid out really well.

Cleanliness of apartment’s pool – never saw it being cleaned once. In the morning when the pool was still you could see a film of dirt on the surface and then as the breeze got up this would all move to the top end of the pool (see picture). My son thought somebody had thrown up in it. There was a permanent scum mark around the edge of the pool.

Cleanliness of area surrounding the pool – never saw this hosed down during the whole holiday. Cleaners did a quick wipe down of parts of the loungers – didn’t seem to make much difference.

Cheesiest evening entertainment I’ve ever come across – although the animation team tried their hardest the entertainment of an evening left a lot to be desired. Although we ate out each evening the lads would want to come back to meet up with their pals so occasionally we thought we would give it a try – not much fun perched on a sun bed that has been used all day by a sweaty Spaniard/Scot/Englishman (take your pick). Only highlights were Vanessa Mae (she’s come down in the world and turned white !!) and the soul divas (whoever would have thought that Diana Ross, Gladys knight and Whitney Houston would be touring together).

They are now charging 2E whenever you want to change your pool towels (suppose that is better than trying to pack 4 damp towels on the return home!)

General:
Excellent restaurants just 5 mins walk away from the apartments. Didn’t have one bad meal the whole fortnight. Can recommend Tony Chu – Chinese down in Jardin de Sol, Guarapo approaching Jardin del Sol, Italian just across the main road & down the steps, El Duke on the approach to the Yumbo, Windsor Gardens in the Yumbo. Also had some excellent meals in Faro 2 and Maspalomas, although a little bit more expensive than PDI.

Had a car for three days – 70E incl tax, ins etc., Used the place next door to the small Spar just down the road. No problems at all. Visited Puerto Rico then got the boat to Puerto Mogan on Market day. Big mistake as this spoilt the atmosphere of “little Venice”. Got boat back to Puerto Rico then drove round to Amadores to spend the rest of the day on the beach. Had a daft hour with my youngest on the inflatables that are in the bay. 4E for 45 mins – great fun but couldn’t move my arms the next day (see picture). Enjoyed a lazy early evening meal at one of the beachside restaurants. Another day we drove up into the mountains that we could see from our balcony. Fantastic views but the roads are not for nervous drivers. After that we drove back down to Pasito Blanco, just west of Meloneras. A private marina where you have to park outside but can walk in. Totally different atmosphere to the big resorts - would recommend a visit.

Two hour delay on our return journey which meant getting back home at 6am !! We did howverevr manage to sleep on the plane as it had been changed to a 767 and there were plenty of spare seats to spread out across.

All in all we had another great holiday in Gran Canaria, however I think it will be the last to Las Margaritas until we hear that there has been refurb work done.

Only came here due to turkey holiday tour op going bust so had to choose this as we had 24 hrs before travelling. We didnt read any reviews prior to going.
Arrive early hrs in the morning room was nice but handle broken write off patio door gor fixed eventually.Lovely big place very clean fairly quiet food was okay a bit repetitive but made the most of it.Then theres the STAFF..not very friendly actually quite rude! was not happy we asked for smirnoff to be put back at the self serv. One of the waiters pulled my 10yr old boys shorts down just about revealing his privates he was quite scared when we approached waiter he was very very apologetic to the point of petrified i think he thought i was going to report him maybe i should have after the way this holiday turned out. As for the locals who were staying here are the rudist bunch i have ever came across no manners whatsoever.
We did enjoy ourselves but the hotel staff did let us down BIG TIME especially on our departure we were told by TC we would have our room till until we left for the airport as it was a night flight , the hotel told us to leave roon at 12noon & cut the AI wristband from my wrist & said no more !! we did complain to management & reps but did nothing.W
Overall the food was okay , hotel nice , staff not nice very clean..I wouldnt recommend this hotel & i wouldnt go back.

We travelled with Thomas Cook and arrived at the Barcelo Margaritas hotel on 29 December for our 7 night all-inclusive package at 4:00pm to find our allocated room had not been made up; nor had the second but third time lucky and we were given a room on the 5th floor overlooking the hotel pool and the Margaritas apartment complex opposite. The room was clean, nicely furnished with plenty of wardrobe space, shelving and drawers and a reasonably sized bathroom with huge white fluffy bath towels!! Although the colour and design of the bed coverings and bathroom tiling wasn't to my taste, I couldn't really fault the room which was very comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. The maids did a very thorough job each day, not that we left our room in a mess.

On previous all-inclusive packages we have been used to having an assigned table in the restaurant for dinner and were a bit alarmed to find this was not the case at the Margaritas. Dinner was between 5:30pm and 9:00pm and involved finding a table which had been made up following earlier use by previous diners. After the first couple of nights roaming the restaurant looking for a made up table for 4 (we travelled with friends), we were a bit worried at the prospect of a possible 'free for all' at the Gala dinner. We needn't have worried!

The New Year's Eve Gala dinner was a great success. I think the restaurant must have had extra staff on that evening as we were actually shown to a table ready for 4 and were handed a glass of champagne and a red rose for each lady on arrival. The food at the Margaritas is excellent with a huge choice of meats, fish dishes and vegetarian options for the evening meals, but they really pushed the boat out for the Gala dinner and we could chose from half lobsters, huge prawns, duck, fish, beef......... the list is endless. For breakfast there are fruit juices, all sorts of cereals, cold meats and cheese, bacon, sausages, eggs (boiled, fried, scrambled, omelettes), a variety of rolls and bread, preserves and just about anything you could wish for. Lunch is usually similar to the evening meals but with a smaller selection on offer but still plenty to cater for most tastes. The serveries were always very clean, with plenty of kitchen staff on hand to top up the food and replace any that was not up to temperature.

Evening entertainment takes place outside, which I have mixed feelings about, but it's becoming more common wherever you go now. There were three professional shows whilst we were there (Chinese acrobats who were breathtaking, a Vanessa Mae tribute act including dancers, and a very good Abba tribute act for New Years Eve). Unfortunately the entertainment provided by the resident animations team was absolutely awful! Thank goodness as 4 adults we were happy to just chat in the Manhattan bar where they had a pianist playing for a hour most evenings. The daytime activities were practically nonexistent too, despite the Thomas Cook brochure and hotel's web site stating various day time activities such as volley ball, football, archery etc would be available. We spoke to one of the team who said as the season progressed more activities would take place once more team members arrived into the season! Not a great problem for us who really just wanted to spend a week relaxing in the sun, but if we had stayed longer this could have been a disappointment.

The hotel grounds are very well looked after and the pathways kept clean daily, with plenty of rubbish bins throughout the site. The pool and bar areas are also spotlessly clean and no glasses area allowed immediately round the pool areas. The pool outside the hotel building is rather small and shaded by palm trees so the water temperature was quite cold. I imagine this is not a problem in the height of summer but in December the pool really needed heating. The pool to the apartment side was much larger and in the sun most of the day so consequently was used more. Both pools looked very clean at all times.

Although there is a free shuttle bus to the beach several times a day, we chose to walk on both occasions and it took us no longer than 20 minutes. Approximately 10 minutes into the walk you will come across the Yumbo Centre - a must for shopping during the day and a good night out during the evenings! You'll see what I mean if you go there one evening.

The Barcelo Margaritas was better than I had hoped for after reading the reviews which were posted after we booked our holiday. It was clean, well kept and maintained and offered reasonably high standards. My biggest gripe is that the long trousers policy in the dining room for gentlemen at dinner is not strongly enforced. Not only were several men wearing knee length trousers, but one evening I was horrified to see one 'gentleman' leave the restaurant wearing a vest!! It's not really the hotel's fault if some people do not know correct dining etiquette but it needs to be stopped before it becomes more common place.

I would certainly recommend the Margaritas Hotel to friends but I think one week was long enough due to the lack of quality entertainment and daytime activities.

this hotel was first class great food n drinks the free bar which is self service is a great adea and saves all the waiting the staff are polite but not overly friendly the only thing we found fault with was the air con which was non exsiting i complained 3 times but nothing seemed to happen as it was nov it was ok with the balcony door open however if it had been mid summer i would have started to shout a bit on the whole a lovely clean hotel and would love to go back i think 2weeks of all in would have killed me tho as there was so much food and such a lot of choice.

We went to the Barcello Margaritis Hotel for a family holiday, there were 8 of us covering 3 generations so the choice was always going to be difficult.
Generally the hotel was very good, nice and clean, but it is not in the best location if you are a beach person as it is necessary to catch the shuttle bus to either Maspalomas or Playa Del Ingles.
The food was very good, although my elderly mother didn't like the choice available. It was more european than English, although the rest of us enjoyed it and there was always plenty of choice(Fish,Pasta,Salads,Hot meat dishes)every night,so you would be hard pushed not to find something to suit.
We did find that for some meals, especially Breakfast, there were not enough staff on ,so it was a bit slow clearing away dirty dishes and replenishing empty milk dispensers etc,but otherwise it was o.k.

I was very disappointed with the entertainment.Being A/I and having cause to stop in the hotel more than normal,i was hoping for some good quality acts to be on.
The entertainment is held outside around the pool,so it was a bit chilly at night anyway, but the shows were very poor the week we were there(although it may have been change over week so may normally be better)

The A/I package is very good. There were drinks avavilable fron 10.00 to 23.00,and as there is a self service area at the side of each bar there was never a queue, even at night.
Also snacks around the pool were available all day,and lunch in the restaurant was excellent, with a very good choice of fresh meals.
The hotel is located at the top of the hill between Playa and Maspalomas,so it is a walk to the centres, although there are some bars nearby and the Yumbo centre is only a 10 minute walk away.
There are plenty of English people in the hotel, although it is predominantly German and Eastern European.
There was never a problem getting sunbeds as there are two pools, the bigger one does tend to be shady, but the smaller one adjacent to the apart/hotel is more open for the sun worshippers.

All in all, this is an excellent hotel, and i would recommend it .We paid just over £500 per person for A/I ,which i thought was reasonably good value, and i would use the hotel again.

Have just returned from the most fabulous week here. Was a bit apprehensive after reading some very negative reports. I must say, I can't wait to return here next year. The hotel is spotless with towels and bedding changed daily (towels only changed if you drape them over the bath, but there's a note in the bathroom to let you know) Room cleaned throughly daily. Oh and if you go here DO NOT bring towels for the pool!!! For a deposit of €12 you can hire a lovely big fluffy beach towel which you can exchange daily at reception for a clean one and at the end of your holiday, the €12 is refunded.

We had a bad experience last year at an all inclusive so I has a bit hesitant - how wrong was I???? Anyone who could find fault with the food the week we were there needs their head looked! Breakfast was great - whatever you fancied - fully cooked/continental/juices and cereals with omelettes being cooked and eggs being fried freshly while you waited.

Tea/Coffee/Cakes/Snacks/Icecream and alcohol were served from 10 at the pool bar (the snacks only limited when the dining room was open for lunch and dinner)

Lunch and dinner were fantastic. Fresh hot food constantly being brought in - even up to about 5 minutes before the resturant closed. Every lunch and dinner time there was show cooking and a wonderful choice of dessert. Hot meats, cold meats, various salads, rice, pasta, spag bol, veg, potatoes, chips ..........need I go on!!!

The All Inclusive drinks were great! No queues at all. To the right hand side of the bar there is a designated area for AI. Beer and wine on tap (good quality too.....) and various optics of spirits - self service. The soft drinks were also branded. If like me you prefer branded spirits, the majority of them were also included in the AI - for example, Smirnoff Vodka, Johnny Walker Whisky etc.all of which you asked for at the bar!!! There are yellow menus on the tables and inside it lists all drinks and the regular price or the AI price. Even drinks that were not included were available at a reduced rate if you were all inclusive. (You had to wear a blue Barcelo Wristband for the duration of your stay so staff knew you were all inclusive)

For us the location was ideal - about a 5 min walk from the Yumbo - quite a dander from the Irish Centre if that's where you prefer to go, but to be honest, you need never leave the hotel until you're ready to go back to the Airport. The entertainment was very good most nights and only repeated every 2 weeks. African Footprints and the Boney M Tribute Act are highly recommended......

The staff were friendly and plenty of them. There was never a problem getting served at the bar (even on the night Spain won the European Cup!!! - what an atmosphere) and the resturant staff were constantly clearing tables. There was even a great firework display on the Saturday Night.

One negative I have is that the beds were not the most comfortable, but hey - who comes on holiday to lie in bed all day!!!!! Had we had the kids with us there was loads for them to do in and around the pool. Loads of games and there was even a giant inflatable in the pool one day which the kids just loved.

Seems to be a popular choice with people with disabilities. There would be no problem for someone on a wheelchair here.

We only ventured over to the apartment side just for a look one day. The pool at the hotel seems shady at first, but it gets soooooo hot you're glad of the shade. The pool at the apartments has no shade, so beware. The grounds are lovely and very well kept. There is internet access in reception but quite expensive.

Hairdrier in the bathroom and fabulous air conditioning in the room - just leave one of your key cards in the slot when going out at night and the room will be so cool on your return - just remember to turn it off at night - I woke twice absolutely shivering in the middle of the night. Oh! and I did not see even 1 cockroach while I was there!!!

I would love to see the places that the people who gave this place negative comments actually stay in!!!!!!!!!!! We booked 4 days in advance and paid just over £400 each for a week all inclusive and it was worth EVERY penny. There is a facility to upgrade from SC to AI for €39 per day, but with the way the € is at the moment, I think it works out as cheap to book AI from home - depends on how the €'s doing when you go - it was at it's lowest when we were there.

We stayed half board. The breakfast was fine but evening meal a bit hit and miss - my daughter struggled some nights to find something she liked (except for chips). They do "show cooking" but they cooked everything in a garlic oil so no matter what you had it tasted of garlic. Apart from that the food was typical 4* standard. The hotel was kept clean and our room made up every day although our towels were only changed once. The hotel is less than 10 mins walk to the Yumbo Centre (avoid this place if you are easily offended by gay people). Other centres spread out around the resort all within 15 - 30 mins. This is not a beach hotel - it's at least 30 minutes to the beach. There's a spar 2 mins away very useful for cold drinks at one third the price of the pool bar. Didn't have much to do with the hotel staff other than when we booked in which was easy enough. Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights to watch the entertainment. African Footprints was excellent and well worth staying in for. We mis-read the entertainment for the 2nd time and ended up playing Bingo - one game took one hour - torture!! Overall we had a good time - we only wanted a chill week which we got, with excellent weather considering Easter was so early this year.

This hotel is split into 2 buildings...the main hotel and an annex that is made up of self catering apartments. We stayed in the apartments. We had requested a room on an upper floor...so predictably on arrival we were allocated one on the first floor!!..we asked to move and this proved no problem..we moved to the fourth floor.I have to say the room was pretty small, much smaller than other apartments we have stayed in in the Canaries. There was a 2 ring cooker and some kitchen units built into a corner of the main room, a fridge with small freezer that desperately needed defrosting but no oven.We dont go away to cook a lot but we have never had an apartment without an oven before. The room was kept very clean...we did have a problem getting clean towels on a couple of occasions though. The room in general was a bit tired looking and could have done with a lick of paint but it was adequate.Cant understand why there is a big walk in store room which wastes so much space in an apartment that is tight on space in the first place. We cant comment on the hotel food as we were self catering..but we did speak to people who were all inclusive and they were very complimentary about the food.
The apartments have their own pool..which is smaller than the hotel one..but which is a much better sun bathing spot...its very open and you get the sun (in October) till 7 pm if you want it.The main hotel pool is very much more shaded. The reception provides pool towels for a small returnable deposit..though some days we were told there were no clean ones(though hotel residents seemed to get them no problem!!)There is a bar doing food and drink by the apartment pool...reasonably priced..usual offerings during the day..burgers,toasties,spag bol, steak sandwiches etc.
There is a SPAR 100 yds from the hotel with plenty more other supermarkets a couple of hundred yards in opposite direction.
A special mention about the kids club which our 7 yr old thoroughly enjoyed..up to 3 times a day on some days!!
The evening entertainment was pretty decent...with the Arabian dancers worthy of special mention.
Its about a 20-25 min walk to beach though there is a free bus service to both Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas beaches. There are a number of commercial centres within easy walks...Yumbo about 10-15 mins..Gran Chaperal centre is out of hotel turn left and about 300 yards down the road across the junction. Loads of family bars and eateries down there from cheap English breakfast places (4 euros!) to a lovely Indian, couple chinese and a nice italian on the main road called Rimini. Its only about 3 euros in a taxi to either the Kasbah centre in PDI or the Faro 2 centre in Maspalomas...both have an array of restaurants and bars.El Rancho opposite the Kasbah was a very nice steak house.
Our weather was fab..after a couple of overcast afternoons when we arrived we then had about 8 or 9 days that were cloudless and scorching. We spent one of the hottest days at the water park..a 5 euro taxi ride away...good value day out with some great slides. No rain whilst we were there.Went on a First Choice "big night out" excursion whcih for 10 euros each was decent value..barbecue and entertainment type thing.
Overall a lovely holiday...accomodation decent without being fantastic.

I am confused about my feelings on this hotel. On the one hand it is very clean and its a nice place for a holiday and on the other hand its noisy at night as the entertainment is by the pool, it doesnt stop till 11pm. The entertainment is rather cheesy!

The rooms are a little small although I was told the suites are excellent. The bathrooms are big with a full size bath and a good shower and towels are changed everyday.

The food is a bit hit and miss and you may have to use the microwave rather alot as if you are not quick the food goes cold and the hot plates are never hot.

I thought the reception staff where unhelpful at times and when we checked in at 3am we had a rather surly man chuck a form and pen at us to sign in.

Some of the bar staff could be quite rude, but not to the germans/italian/spanish guests, they were all treated like royalty and I had to wait long periods of time to get served when the bar was busy I felt ignored on several occasions.

The TV for Brits was awful..and yes I know, we dont go on holiday to watch telly but the Germans/Italians/Spanish are well catered for whilst we had Eurosport, Spanish classic TCM (film channel showing b/w movies in English) Sky News and CNN. I asked if we could get a different channel as I was really tired from a trip out and just wanted to chill out one night, but I was told no.. somehow I dont think we are valued as much as others!

Anyway...I wouldn't choose the hotel again just because its not my cup of tea...talking of tea..you dont get tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms here...take a travel kettle and some cups if you are like me and like a cuppa late on in the evening.

I stayed here with a friend for a week.

Good location, good sized apartment with a balcony.

However I wasn't too impressed with some of the staff members. The lady who checked us in had little English and could not explain why we could not rent a safe that night. If reception was open then why not? Fine, no big deal. However, on Tuesday night we got a call from reception saying we were making too much noise. Well, we were inside, no music and not even the television was on. I went down to the hotel reception where the clerk told me he had received a complaint from security that we were talking and he could hear us. Well, we said we were on the seventh floor and instead of apologizing he said he did not see us but was simply responding to a request from security. Well, how about that??? I was totally upset that night.

On the last day we had to check out at 12 but we were told we could book a room to have a shower and a change of clothes. My friend did but when he went up to the designated room there was somebody still there and he had to wait 15 mins to get changed. Surely there must be a more efficient system to deal with this. Again, not much of an apology.

On the whole for the price we paid (this is not a cheap hotel by any means) it wasn't great. These little things may sound trivial but they all add up to cause a major dissatisfaction on my part.

Just got back from the Barcelo, stayed in the hotel side.

Rooms were very small and pokey in the living areas, clean enough with a tiny fridge that you could fit about 2 bottles of water into. Bathroom was a nice size, but really didnt like having three single beds in a row with no seperate main bedroom - very clostraphobic. Not much more to say about the rooms - we were HB and didnt need anything in the way of cooking etc =- good job!

Resort was clean and the pool areas were nice - even if one of the pools is far too shaded - sun is at a premium on this one. The pool at the apartment side is more open and nice - not too busy at this time of year either.

The place had a lot of Germans, and without wanting to sound racist it's apparent that their culture does not demand as many manners as our own. Prepare to be stared at, barged into etc - especially at mealtimes.

Food was ok - bit repetative, but so much selection you will find something to satisfy you every meal time in the resteraunt.

My main gripe is the kids entertainment. Nothing short of atrocious. I saw two kids reps waling around the resort. And yes, thats all they seemed to do. We have a toddler and the most important thing for us was that she had a brilliant holiday. She did, but that was down to some of the kids we met there and our own plans for entertaining her.

She was soo excited about the kids disco. She need not have been. The reps didn't take part other than on 2 occasions. The stage (if you can call it that) is about 5 metres max away from the pool. Not the safest of environments by a long shot, especially as there is no screening and the closest point to the stage is the deepest part of the pool. You would think the reps/'entertainers' would acknowlege the dangers of this rather than make the kids run round the outside of the pool hunting for ping pong balls - they didnt, and over the week I was there 2 kids fell in - of a non swimming age. Yes you might say parents should keep an eye out, but it was mahem around that pool with the kids due to the reps and it is not on.

The kids disco didnt start until 8.30 - by which time most children are knackered, and I just can't understand it. Half the kids were falling asleep on chairs or getting naughty because they had had to wait around for so long entertaiing themselves (and each other) since dinner. When the disco did begin it had to be conducted in and around the stage whilst the entertainment team were positioning whacking great speakers and mobile lighting systems for the main act that would come on later - causeing more hazards and shoe horning the children into any area they could for a dance. The disco was then concluded as quickly as possible with minimum effort by a blond dressed a bit like a clown and with a booming voice that scared my daughter to death. I felt really sorry for the children, and although they did enjoy it they are not in a position to appreciate how much better it could be.

The main point though has to be the entertainment being so close to the swimming pool - I cannot stress this enough. Imagine a stage with chairs to the left of it and a couple of rows in front. They look to the immediate right - there are no chairs there because there is no space for them between the stage and the deepend of the swimming pool. If there is no space for a few chairs between the pool and the stage then this is not where you should be holding a childrens disco comprising mainly of tired 2 and 3 year olds. I watch my daughter like a hawk, but some parents don't, and even though I do I am no olympic standard sprinter should she decide to make a beeline for the deepend or walk backwards whilst i dare to look in another direction for two seconds.

Hotel staff were varied - bar staff friendly enough and all seemed efficient, but dont expect any effort from the reception staff. The main FT rep tried hard, but is full of flannel.

I won't be going back, and have booked a second holiday at the Village on the Costa Del Sol because I feel so guilty that my daughter didn't have the best holiday possible.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks in December and had a fantastic time.

If even though we were self catering we did visit the hotel restaurant twice and the food was good...plenty of variety.

The self catering apartments were to a good standard and very clean. The sheets were changed every other day and floors and sanitary facilities daily.

The hotel's facilities were also very good plenty to do in the day time if you were just chilling around the pool. The Entertainment Team tried to involve you in the activities but did not pester you if you did not want to participate. The Reception Staff were also very helpful.

Gran Chapperell is a 5 minute walk away where you can find an excellent bar called Wemblys....well worth a visit and I am sure it will not be your only visit. The Yumbo Centre is only a 5-10 minute walk away where there are plenty of fantastic restaurants and it is great for shopping. Also take a show at Ricky's Caberet Bar........fantastic show.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

PS Don't forget a trip to Aqualand!!!

We stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks on a half board basis. The hotel itself was lovely and clean, the bed linen was changed 4 times each week and fresh towels were provided daily.

The staff were all really friendly, and the entertainment team went out of their way to ensure that the kids and adults alike were all kept happy and entertained.

The hotel is only a short walk from the Gran Chaparal and Yumbo centres. Central enough for us, but not in the thick of it.

Taxis are very cheap and readily available.

The nearby western theme park Sioux City was excellent, our lads loved it there.

The beach is a little far but as I said the taxis are really cheap, so not a problem.

Overall this holiday was fantastic and we hope to go back in 2007.

The hotel is lovely, but quiet old, hence the furnishings looking very dated in the bedrooms.
The staff were not very friendly, some just didn't know how to smile, and if you are all inclusive you have to give your room number and sign for all your drinks, we didn't agree with this. anyone could have overheard you give your room number and use it to obtain free drinks, after 11pm.
THE POOLS
the main pool with the pool bar is very shaded due to the amount of palm trees, best to go up on the Sun decks or the the pool near the Apartment block have full sun all day.

FOOD
Good choice of food, the only thing that lets this hotel down, it has no children menu, so some parents with small children did struggle.

ENTERTAINMENT
a couple of good acts, but it dosn't start until 10pm and finishes at 11pm then to the disco bar, were they played Gene Pickney, Dean Martin and a little bit of Rock & Roll, not our scene.

ROOMS
our room had 3 camp beds and were very uncomfortable, but the rooms were cleaned every day, they were spotless.

RESORT
you have to be very open minded especially if your taking children, we didn't realise that it's well known for Gay couples to take there hoidays at this resort, although i have no problems with this there were a few gay couples who flaunted the fact they were a couple, which i did take offence at especially around the pool were children were playing.

overall fantastic hotel ideally situated away from main hustle and bustle but still close enough to walk into main resort

Hotel was great very very clean, bar staff are brilliant gave us free drinks and food all the time, we would go back there any time.

The weather was unreal we went 30th sept to oct 15 and it was 32+ every single day and you vary rarely seen a cloud, the beach is a 2 euro taxi trip and there is a taxi rank right outside the hotel, kasbah is 10 mins away, yumbo 5 mins and there is a centre a stone throw away full of bars.

We are 21 and 23 and we met some girls from the other apartments and there room was just as good as ours nice and big with balconies over looking the pool, don't get a low floor or you will have a palm tree in your way, we were on 5 and that was fine.

A MUST DO NOT TAKE TOWELS, you don't need them you pay 12 euros, you get a towel at reception you keep it as long as you want and you take it back anytime you want to be replaced for a fresh one, at the end of your holiday you get your 12 euros back, what more could you want lol.

There is not one bad thing I could find about this holiday everyone who complains about it being away from the beach, it is 2 euros taxi or a free bus.

This hotel is great you will have a great holiday if you go there, full of families, not really young people 18-22 but a couple, Spanish, German and English people all there.

We returned to the hotel after visiting Barcelo last year, not a hugh difference after the refurbishemnts still very high standards.

The hotel is in a quiet part od PDI however a free bus is put on by the hotel to go to the 2 beaches, and we walked back one day took about half hour.

Free sunbeds and towels when paid a small deposit, we sunbathed on the solarium which is a little sun trap. I used the main pool as this is where the entertainment was.

Ask for a high floor room as there are many trees which obscure the views from some rooms.

A very impressive hotel, the evening entertainment is fantastic, with great live shows.

Rooms cleaned daily, towels changed daily, beds changed 4 times in 1 week, all the staff friendly I even got free drinks from the pool bar, amazing, would def reccommend this hotel.

We have just come back from the Barcelo hotel, we stayed in the apartments, nice rooms the air con wasn't all that didn't feel like it was even on. The cleaners were spot on every day clean towels and rooms cleaned excellent. The hotel reception staff were very helpful and friendly.

If you have a late flight like we had you can keep a room on for the day it cost 24 euro which we thought was really cheap for the length of time we had it for. I think that this resort/hotel was mainly for German's there was loads there.

Found some very nice restaurants in the Yumbo centre, well now that place is an experience, gay central! if you go to the Yumbo was the drag shows they are very funny. Also we went to the Aqua Park in Maspolpmas this was a great day out and very cheap. Taxi from the hotel to water park was only 6 euro.

All I all we had a very nice time here, but we would not return as we like going to different places

Spent a very pleasant two weeks in this hotel. Lovely, large room on 7th floor big enough for three which was fully air conditioned and had free mini fridge. We were all inclusive and found the food to be plentiful and very nice. Champagne and salmon breakfast on occasion. Not once did I see chips served at breakfast as mention before. As a "cat loather" I was annoyed by two "resident" cats who were fed by diners (saw one cat up on chair at a guests table being fed - gross!!!! and this one same woman invited cat onto her sunlounger for a snooze evry morning and it actually lay on her beach towel)

Did not like main pool at hotel, found it too small and shaded. We used the apartment pool which had the sunshine all day and was much bigger. You were allowed to use inflateables in the pool. Felt a bit "left out" of the entertainment though as everything took place at main pool. Found the night time entertainment OK, particularly enjoyed The Drifters.

Did not like location of hotel, too far out for my likings. Did not like PDI as a resort. Did not like the way everything was set out in "Centres"

Just arrived back from Las Margaritas (we were there from Mon 24 July until Mon 7 Aug) and can quite easily say that this is one of the best family holidays we have had.

The Barcelo Margaritas is in the quieter part of the resort towards the back of the town just off the main road that runs down the eastern side of the island.

We stayed in the apartments or Las Margaritas Suites as they are referred to over there. We had an apartment on the 7th floor that overlooked the apartments pool, the surrounding mountains and in the opposite direction the beach and lighthouse at Maspalomas. The apartment was just right for a family of four – twin bedroom, bathroom, lounge & small kitchenette. We let the lads (12 &10) have the bedroom as I’m always an early riser and didn’t want to disturb them when making the early morning cuppa. The sofa bed and pull out bed were very comfortable and when pushed together made a quite large double – the view when we opened our curtains and looked from the bed was breathtaking - I'll post some photo’s in the gallery section. Both the bedroom and the lounge have air-con, controlled from the room. This was always left on low of a night time, which combined with the blackout curtains ensured we all had great nights sleep, in fact better than at home (local vino might have something to do with this). When we went out of an evening we left the air-con on high so that the apt was nice and cool on our return.

As I said we were in the apartments but you could use all the facilities throughout the hotel & apartments grounds. In our opinion the apartments pool was by far the better of the two adult pools. The one by the hotel was small, very busy and shaded by the huge palm trees, which looked very nice but not sure whether the shade they cast was appreciated by everybody – tended to be the Spanish contingent round here. There was also a distinct wiff of something nasty round the hotel pool – not sure whether something had died or there was a problem with the drains. Either that or Brussel Sprouts was served with all meals !!

The sporting facilities were excellent and our lads thought they were in heaven – there is miniature golf in the landscaped gardens, 5-a-side beach football pitch, volley ball court, tennis court, archery, pistol & rifle shooting, table tennis, darts, shuffle board (whatever that is) etc., Although the local animacion team were very good they did tend to forget about us round the apartment pool so you had to pop round to the hotel pool (where they are based) and check with them what was being organised. Ignore their noticeboard – it bears no resemblance to the days activities. Saying that most of the time my lads were organising their own footie & tennis matches – amazing how quickly they make friends with all nationalities.

Felt very safe round and about the hotel and apartments to such an extent that we were happy for our lads to stay around the pool bar and gardens while we had a quiet drink on the balcony. It was great to know that the entertainment stopped at 11pm and the hotel pool bar stopped serving shortly after Peace & quiet apart from a mangy mutt somewhere. The bar inside the hotel remained open along with the disco until the early hours (which we never heard). Worth pointing out that the apartment pool bar closed at about 6pm – all the entertainment is around the hotel pool bar.

FIRST CHOICE
No problems encountered and found the childrens reps particularly friendly with the kids – even the older ones like mine who didn’t go to the clubs.

Didn’t bother with the coach transfers even though we paid for them. Arranged a taxi over the internet – 62 euros return. Well worth it when we discovered a big black limo waiting for us at Las Palmas airport. We were already unpacked & heading down to the pool when the coach pulled up at the apartments.

As I said we had a great holiday – made extra special by the facilities and setting of the apartments. Hopefully we will be going back again next year. If you need any particular queries answering feel free to pm me - John sl

We booked half board but as I had already paid full for my son age 10 we upgraded in the hotel to all inclusive. That saved me money. I think it was good value for money as the only cash I needed in the hotel was for my paper and loads of games of snooker. Even the crisps and ice creams were included in the all inc.

Our room was spacious and had plenty of wardrobe space. no t.v. channels except sky news.

The food was only OK. Chips for breakfast !!! After two weeks even I couldn't take any more. Not as good as the Barcello in Fuertaventura.

Location only ok. Didn't think it would be quite so far from the beach. We went once on the free bus and it was nice.

The reception staff were very friendly. The bar staff were very hit and miss or should that be miserable.

The entertainment was not very good. On the Friday night the hotel staff put on a show. Appauling !!!

There were tribute bands on a few nights which were very good. the early evening childrens entertainment was mind numbing.

I am the music man every night for 14 days. I can't believe there are no other compilation cd's they could have got for variety.

Do not think the hotel is a 4 star.

Not a 4 star a good 3 star.

Stayed half board, excellent food eat as much as you want.
Poor location but this was reflected in the price we paid. 3k from the beach ( the hotel has a free bus every 30 mins or so ) Taxi`s are very good and cheap. The closer to the beach the more you pay.

Hotel staff are good at what they do ( lets face it they are paid to be nice )

People of all nations of the world so not dominated by one country. Although most were from the uk when we were there.
Entertainment in the evening ranged from very good to very bad.

Bar staff like it if you are paying for drinks by cash as they like a small tip, they will ask cash or credit. This will be by wrist band if its credit to your room Number.

Have been to Gran Canaria 3 times and the second time we have hired a car. Only hire one for 2/3 days because you can see all you need to in that time.

Go to the mountains for a day out or visit the small towns. Pauto del Mogan is a must and we liked the town of Terror. Tom Tom sat nav works there OK if you have the maps. Only got us lost once, but soon corrected itself.
We would not use this hotel again as we like to try others. But for the money its OK.

Cannot comment on kids club as ours are to old now to come with us but they were having a good time and well looked after.

We arrived at the Las Margaritas just before 3am on Easter Sunday morning after a pleasant, uneventful flight and transfer from First Choice. We were quickly given our all-inclusive wristbands, keycard for our room, and our restaurant tickets. I also decided to hire a safe straight away to save messing around in the morning.

Our room (205) was very nice; it was one of the bigger rooms, with enough space for 3 beds, a couple of comfy chairs and a large bathroom with separate toilet.

The keycard operates the electric in the room, so if you want to leave your air-conditioning on while you’re out you’ll need a tesco clubcard or something similar to keep it going; we actually found a bit of folded card did the job just as well.

There is a hairdryer in the bathroom and quite a large TV in the bedroom with mostly Spanish channels. There is also a fridge, you can either pay to have your mini-bar stocked up or just use it to keep your pop from the Spar and your aftersun cool!

We went down for breakfast (still very tired) about 9.30am, and were greeted by hordes of German and Spanish guests pushing and shoving in their own special charming way… The restaurant staff are very pleasant, at breakfast they bring you a pot of fresh coffee as soon as you sit down, and clear up your used plates fairly quickly.

One morning I was pleasantly surprised to find smoked salmon and ‘champagne’ on the breakfast buffet, and every morning there was something for everyone with cereals, fresh and tinned fruits, bread and rolls, and the usual bacon, eggs, omelettes etc. The kids were pleased to find pancakes and sticky sauce every morning!

Lunch was much quieter, many of the hotel guests are on half-board, so the restaurant is fairly empty at lunchtime, and the food was a bit ‘heavy’, so most days we had a pizza or burger at the pool bar instead.

Only a specific list of snacks are ‘all-inclusive’ at the pool bar, and you can’t get them between 1-3pm, you have to go in the restaurant if you’re hungry at that time – however, if you’re a ‘paying guest’ you can get any snacks at any time.

Evening dinner was generally OK, we had a Mexican and a Canarian theme night while we were there and the other nights were pretty good too, although we felt we’d seen it all by the end of the week. The restaurant staff were lovely, and serve your drinks quickly and politely, they poured my wine for me and waited for me to taste it before they left the table, instead of just plonking it down.

You’re expected to dress for evening dinner, no short trousers are allowed and I only spotted one or two Spanish guests wearing three-quarter pants, but smart, not ‘sporty’ ones.

The main hotel pool was very nice, but shaded by trees from one side or the other for most of the day, which can make the water quite chilly. There’s a nice shallow area for the little ones and plenty of trees and umbrellas if you prefer the shade. The daytime activities (water-polo, shuffleboard etc) also take place down at the hotel pool.
The pool up in the apartments has full sun all day, with very little shade and no daytime activities. We went up there on the first day because we wanted some sunshine, but it got quite hot up there and after lunch we moved back down to the hotel pool.

The evening ‘entertainment’ was held outside around the main hotel pool area. I assume this must be lovely in the hot summer months, but in April the evenings can still be quite chilly – most people were wrapped up in jackets, cardies and fleeces and everyone was eager to get into the indoor bar after the entertainment had finished at 11pm, especially after we’d all seen a large rat running across the floor in front of the stage!

There is a lovely large room next to the ‘disco’ which was where we had our reps welcome meeting. The rep was new to the hotel and she assumed (same as me) the entertainment would be held in this room, and in bad weather it probably is, but outdoor entertainment was the order of the day, whether we liked it or not, and this was obviously a problem for families with very small children running around the pool in the dark.

The entertainment itself was a bit of a letdown. I had expected better from a 4-star hotel, it was pretty ‘cheesey’ and we’ve had better in 3-star hotels. We had acrobats, Irish dancers and the best night was ‘The Drifters’ (never knew the Drifters were Spanish, and they looked good for their age… lol) but Sunday night was the Barcelo reps own cabaret/comedy night with Shaggy & Co, and this was pretty bad, and then Monday was even worse with karaoke all night, which was very poorly attended by the guests and most of the singers were Germans singing German pop songs.

The bar staff were smart and efficient but always served the ‘paying guests’ before us all-inclusives, and always served the Spanish guests before anyone else at all. Some of them were fairly pleasant, some were just grumpy. They’re strict with the all-inclusive – wearing the wristband isn’t enough, you have to give your room number and sign for everything, so it goes on the computerised till, and all-inclusive ends very firmly at 11pm, my son just wanted a bag of crisps at 10.57pm and had to argue with the grumpy barman whose watch was obviously wrong…

The choice of drinks on all-inclusive is quite extensive, although as usual, it’s ‘local brands’ only, however the pop is proper Coke, Sprite and Fanta. We had booked our all-inclusive in advance with First Choice, but it’s cheaper to pay for it when you get there – they have a special offer on at the moment – around 18 euros per day per person to upgrade from half-board.

I would have preferred to stay in the apartments to have more space, but First Choice only sell self-catering in the apartments, I wasn’t aware when I booked that I could have booked self-catering in an apartment and paid for all-inclusive when I got there.

On our last day we weren’t leaving until midnight and all-inclusive ends at midday when you hand back your keycard, so we paid to keep our all-inclusive until 11pm – this cost 9 euros each (half-price for children) We also paid for a late checkout room – 24 euros (per room) but we couldn’t keep our lovely spacious room, because that had already been allocated to new guests arriving that afternoon so we had to move to a tiny little single room (232) which was OK for a shower and getting changed etc at our own leisurely pace, instead of having an allocated half-hour per family in a courtesy room.

The area around the hotel is fairly characterless, you can walk to the Gran Chaperral (English bars) or Yumbo (transvestite bars and shopping) centres quite easily, but it’s a very long way to the beach. The hotel has a free bus with 8 journeys per day to Playa del Ingles beach and 4 journeys to Maspalomas.

All in all, we had a nice holiday. I had planned a ‘chill-out’ compared to our usual ‘out-on-trips-everyday’ kind of holiday and chill-out was what we got, especially when the clouds came over (which they did quite frequently). We didn’t do too bad with the weather, if we’d gone a week earlier we would have had rain, but it had been a very hot March, with the weather ‘breaking’ after the beginning of April.

The Las Margaritas is a very nice hotel, but I’d say it was more suitable for mature couples. The First Choice kids club isn’t on in winter (although my kids are too old for it anyway) and the Barcelo activities have to be tolerated in a variety of languages, with the German and Spanish participants insisting on winning everything.
I probably wouldn’t go again, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t recommend it; if I had to go again I’d book self-catering or half-board and maybe pay for all-inclusive towards the end of the holiday, after having a few nights out away from the hotel entertainment.

Entertainment was ok-not best we have.

We stayed at this hotel on and all inclusive basis and it was well worth the money. I stayed at this hotel 12 yrs ago and it has recently refurbished. We couldn't fault the cleanliness of the hotel, there were always maids and cleaners milling around. We were impressed with the daily towel change and the maids always kept the room clean.

We all thought the food was fantastic. There was always plenty of choice and there was a carvery every evening. The salad bar was always fully stocked with various dishes, and alot of evenings they had themed evenings. Lunch was always nice, with the most crispiest roast potatoes. Breakfast again always loads of choice, ranging from smoked salmon, pate and pancakes. I came home feeling like i had put on a stone in weight! All our drinks were free as we were AI. The wine was like paint stripper, but smirnoff vodka was included on the AI. I also enjoyed their version of Baileys. My kids were issued with a band for their arm so they could get their own drinks. Sometimes the bar staff got a little confused with AI, and either me or my hubby had to go up with them.

We weren't keen on the location, the beach was too far, and the town was dirty and there wasn't much going on.

The hotel staff were a mixed bag. Sometimes they were ok, other times they were moody.

We thought the entertainment was good. During the day the team did their best to get people involved in activities such as water polo, shuffleboard, darts and pool competitions. I felt that the kids disco in the evening was the same every single night and could have done with being on for and hour. There seemed to be a long gap after the kids disco until the show.
They had really good shows on in the evenings. The ones i really enjoyed was the Sherman Brothers, who sung mowtown, and the tribute to the Supremes.

All in all we couldn't really fault this hotel, but i don't think we would go back purely because of the location.

Our family of seven, two adults and five children aged from 1 to 15, stayed at Las Margheritas for a week in two adjacent rooms in early October 2005 on a half board basis. We were very impressed with the hotel. In particular we found the standard of food and cleanliness to be excellent.

We were in the main part of the hotel overlooking the pool and outdoor entertainment area. There were other rooms in a nearby annexe with another pool.

Although the hotel seemed full there were always sunbeds available in the pool area or on the large raised sun terrace which is actually on the restaurant roof.

Our rooms gave us plenty of room for three sleeping in each and a cot space in one. Maybe four in each would have been a squeeze. Electricity and satellite TV were free. Our rooms were very modern and clean. Maid service was very good.

The self service, eat as much as you like, restaurant was very impressive. Clean, well staffed and a fantastic choice of meals for both breakfast and dinner. We were so impressed that we did not eat out once. We were often among the last in for breakfast, yet on no occasion did I see any food item empty. Every choice remained available right up until the minute of closing. All the guests of every nationality seemed equally impressed with the hotel food, easily the best I have seen on my many holidays in Spanish resorts over the years. Other guests we spoke to who were all-inclusive were also very happy with their options. You can upgrade to all inclusive at reception for 15 euros per person per day, but we decided not to as we weren't drinking much alcohol and our two meals easily filled us up for the day.

The hotels evening entertainment took place in the evening on a raised stage near the pool and close to the large pool bar. Usually a period of games and songs aimed at the younger children would be followed by bingo, then a professional performance at around 10-15pm. We were pleasantly surprised by the standard of the entertainers. Our favourites being the drag show and the ABBA tribute group. From many rooms the entertainment could easily be watched from the balcony. The hotel disco opens when the outdoor entertainment finishes.

Another mention must go to the new play area for the younger children. It featured a small pool, ball pit, bikes and trikes, climbing items etc. It was immaculately clean, safe and seemed almost brand new. Whenever we took our two youngest there we almost had it to ourselves.

Perhaps the only negative being about the hotel is that it is a bit far from beach, maybe a about a mile. Not a problem for us as we had a hire car and the beach car park was always nearly empty. Also the hotel runs a free bus service to the beach. A busy main road runs behind the hotel, but it is so well shielded you don't even notice its there. We only realised when we actually drove along the road and saw the hotel. There are two good supermarkets close to the hotel entrance, and the Yumbo shopping centre is only about a five minute walk away.

In summary we were delighted with our choice of hotel. Great for a hotel based family holiday. We would definitely stay there again. Overall 5/5.

Location very poor. Long way from beach and the centres. Busy roads all around.

Staff generally friendly and helpful.

Entertainment... well is a risque Lady Boys Show appropriate for a Family Hotel? Otherwise run of the mill amateurs...

First Choice Kids Club a blessing and Kids Reps excellent. They were more help than the First Choice Rep who was worse than useless!!!

Well what can I say its not a bad hotel but doesnt live up to Barcelo status. Quite impressed with accomodation but for 4 in a room the 4th put up bed is a bit of a joke .

Im glad my lad is only a 6 year old feather weight. The food is good but gets a bit repetetive, but thats to be expected after 14 days, but I must say my biggest gripe was the bar staff who seemed to look down on residents with an all inclusive card in there hands. My 12year old girl waited 20 mins for a coke and even then I was asked to sign for it.

Also be carefull when in cabaret or disco bar ,we paid for all extra drinks in cash and asked on getting them to sign the tabs so they could say we payed cash. When we handed our key in to go home we were presented a bill for 60 euros all of which we had payed for .

All in all a bit disapointing but hope this is of help. Will defnitely go back to Gran canaria but try a hotel more consistent to all inclusive guests.

After reading reviews about this hotel we were apprehensive as to what we would find.

The hotel pool and bar had been totally refurbished it was always cleaned in the morning. The restaurant had also been refurbished and was clean and bright, we never had trouble finding a table.

The hotel was excellent value for money. We found all the staff very helpful and friendly. It was our first time all inc, but there was something for every one lots or variety of carved meats, always something different to try, themed evenings and there were salads, cold meats, soups and lots or fresh sea food, lots of cakes and desserts.

We found that most people were british some french and scandanavian. all very friendly.

The pool bar could get busy but having to wait 5mins for free drinks isnt a problem to most people. The waiters worked very hard in the heat but at quieter times they would have time to chat.

The entertainment was a professional show mainly jugglers acrobats etc but we travelled with kids who wanted stay in the hotel in the evening as they had made lots friends.

The first choice kids club was excellent it has its own area with pool and tv area etc. The hours varied when the kids could go but lots of different activities. well done to first choice reps the kids loved you.

Definately would go back and would recommend to families wanting hotel based fun.

We have just arrived back from a 2 week holiday at the hotel Barcelo Las Margaritas in Gran Canaria in the resort of Playa del Ingles.

The hotel was clean we were on a half board basis and the food was very basic, not much choice at all,we ate out the last 6 nights as the food was repeating itself as the days went by.

Cant comment on the entertainment at night as we went to the resort centre nightly.

The location was fine only about a 15min walk to the Yumbo or the Khasba centre, tax woukld cost about 3 euros.

This is our third time to the resort in 9 months but the first to this hotel and glad to say it will also be our LAST.

The hotel maids and restuarant staff were excellent, the only down side to hotel staff were the pool bar staff as they would always serve the spanish before the brits, even if they arrived at the bar after you they always got served first. However the food at the bar was excellent its a shame that the restaurant food was not upto the same standard.

The most important downside to the pool was that the kids entertainers were always hassling the kids to get there inflatables and balls out the pool as the spanish kept on complaining they were getting wet.

At one time they even threatened us with the hotel security or the local police if we never vacated the pool, when challenged they said it was hotel management that wanted the balls and inflatables out the pool but never once saw the management at the pool, hence we parents more or less ignored any announcements made by the entertainers to vacate the pool.

The hotel pool sells what were banned from the pool and when we asked why, the rep told us they sold them for the beach which is over 3km away, come on who is kidding who, then again our rep was as much use as a chocolate fire guard!

Wow you are not kidding the pool area is in complete disarray the restaurants were a shambles and the food left a lot to be desired.

The Staff seem thoroughly fed up with having to deal with irrate customers and the entertainment was quite poor.

Had been advised by Cosmos the week before travel of minor decorating work and that hotel & pool etc would be open. Not so, everything shut and scaled down.

Apartments OK and spottlessly clean. Staff work hard and very friendly.

The food however was very poor and to add insult to injury the new restraunt opened on our final night. The food there was great, lots of choice with chefs stood carving meat for you etc.

Would definitely return to this hotel. The new pool and pool bar area looks very nice (although was still closed when we left).

All in all missed out on the usual holiday at the Margaritas but will return again.

Was informed by Direct of some minor work on the pool. What a joke the hotel was shut and the pool was being dug up so we were in the apartments.

These rooms ok but no duplicate facilities no bar because it had been turned into a make do resturant no lounge area to speak of food not even 2 star. Only way the one and only hot food area could be refilled was for you to move out of the way taste less food.

Really if Barcelo are to do this work they should shut down and not try to keep going at the same time.

Entertainment nil down stairs in the shut hotel with no air.

We were warned by Thomas Cook that building work would be going on during our stay but it was only just starting and didn't create any noise or dust.

The hotel seems to be in two parts. One building is the "Hotel", the other the "Apartmentos" [worth remembering for the taxi drivers], and it is the hotel part which is undergoung refurbishment and is closed. We were told it's going to be a big refurb so beware when booking.

The Apartmentos are well furnished and clean and no, the beds are not hard!
The room service staff are absolutly superb and it didn't matter how late we got up they still cleaned the room.
The restaraunt, it's food, service and staff were very poor [we only tried it once].

Yes, most of the other guests were German and yes they do dislike the Brits. Maybe its the football shirts, tattoos and the inability to use the toilets combined with a need to pee in the pool that does it.

This is the 9th time to this hotel (7 times at Easter, 2 times in summer) and it is all round one of the best hotels on the island.

The food is probably as good as you are going to get at a typical Spanish hotel and generally the staff are polite and helpful. A couple of the bar staff can be arrogant if they are stressed, but this is not to deter from the overall view of the staff.

The hotel is generally clean and tidy and the maids are excellent, the reception staff have a good volcabulary in English and are always happy to help.

The entertainment staff changes frequently with some being very professional and friendly and some being out of their depth (it just depends on if your lucky to come when the good ones are there). The discoteque is small and tidy however the music choice tends to be European unless prompted to put chart music on, which most times they do oblige and if they don't have the songs they will be happy to play your cd's.

Very disappointed with this hotel, definitley not a 4 star, no way.

Toilets in public areas permanently dirty and smelly, staff surly and unfriendly, food poor quality.

The rooms themselves are quite good.

Hotel is full of Spanish and Scandinavian and German guests none of whom were keen on their fellow guests the Brits!

Entertainment was particularly bad and amateurish.

Location of hotel is also poor as it's well away from main resort areas, so taxis or lots of walking through the concrete jungle that is Playa des Ingles.

I've stayed at this hotel a couple of times now. Once with Thomson and most recently booked it myself over the internet with seperate flights. On the whole I had two very good holidays, the staff were very helpful, cleaners and waiters a pleasure. The rooms in the main building are reasonably sized although the air-con can be a bit noisy. Beds were quite comfortable, although after a couple of refreshments who notices! We spent may nights on our balcony watching/listening to the entertainment before heading out on the town. The entertainment was OK,it filled a few hours after dinner.

There are two pools, the one at the main block usually busy and can be a bit noisy, better to go to the pool at the rear of the annex building, quieter and more secluded as its adjacent to the gardens/gymnasium.

One pointer - if you book youself at the hotel they invariably put you in the annex building. The rooms are larger, seperate lounge and quieter air-con. Its also cheaper!

The hotel maids were a blessing! They would do anything we asked without complaint.

The location was set back into the city centre and the Time share touts were like flies.

Staff were ok in general. Bar staff a bit abrupt on occasions when they were under pressure.

Entertainment was brilliant you cannot beat the 4* Spanish Hotel entertainment made you want to stay in every night, just as well cos the town centre at night is full of drunken yobs! (I would not let my daughter(17) go out on her own)

The hotel is certainly a Barcello chain magnificent!

The rooms were spotless beds were a bit lumpy gave a few sleepless nights, so did the air conditioning didn’t seem to be good enough for the 35 degrees.

The food wow! You could survive a week after eating one of the breakfasts, tables were slow to be cleared.

e location is smack bang in the middle of Playa de Ingles and as such we were constantly plagued by the time share touts.

Entertainment! The hotel entertainment was brilliant finished at around 11:00 in the evening, gave the teenagers time to go on the town. Town can be a bit scary though loads of drunken youths.

Have just returned from this Hotel, having booked it purely because of the great reviews it got on this website. We usually go to Tenerife and stay in equivalent grade hotels there, and in that respect this hotel didnt quite meet the same standards.Dont get me wrong we had a great time and if we had never been to Tenerife then we would have had probably not found any fault with this hotel, but there were several little things that i would not have expected of a hotel of this grade.

Our room was clean and well equipped and on the 5th floor overlooking the pool, however the beds were the most uncomfortable i have ever slept in at any hotel i have ever visited. Hard as rock and the pillows werent much better either. We also had a camp bed and this made things a little cramped, with myself and two older children of 15 & 10. The air conditioning system was inadequate, barely blowing out any cold air regardless of what setting it was on, and as the temperatures soared for the last few days of our stay to the mid 40's deg C, it was impossible to get a good nights sleep or seek any kind of relief from the heat during the day.

The reception staff were great as were the cleaning staff, keeping everything in and around the hotel spotless.

The food was fantastic, great choice and very good quality and i dare anyone to have left that dining room hungry. One small thing here. Most places have a senior staff member to escort guests to a table but here you found your own table, fine if there were just two or four of you, but we were a party of five and as there were less tables made up for larger numbers, we found ourselves roaming around trying to find a table, which at busy times we found a bit irritating. I also found that tables were slow to be cleared of plates, even at the quieter times, and yet again this is just an observation not a critism.

The pool area wasnt very big for a hotel of this size and although there was another one, it was some considerable distance away. However all the sunbeds and pool area were cleaned every morning and sunbeds were not allowed to be reserved before 10am, a rule enforced by the removal of towels by staff, the first time i have seen it carried out and a good thing.

Daytime entertainment was very good and very well organised, the evening entertainment was the usual sort of stuff, however i do think that there could have been more for the kids in the evening.

There is everything you need on site at this hotel, a shop selling UK papers and lots of other stuff, hairdressers, sauna, massage, beauty treatments etc. whcih is just as well as it is very much on the edge of the resort and quite a long way to walk to get to anything. Taxis are very cheap so no need to walk anyway.

Bar prices in the hotel are reasonable as was the food from the snack bar.

so all in all i would recommend this hotel, my comments are only observations and apart from the hard beds, none of them did anything to spoil a great holiday. We used First Choice who were very good, and we got a very valuable free child place which made it a very good value holiday for us. We went to the welcome meeting, which we normally avoid like the plague, but were glad we did go as it wasnt the usual hard sell of the trips, but lots of very useful info about the hotel and the resort/island.The two reps were good and extremely helpful when we needed to arrange a visit to the local hospital too.

But Hotel Bitacora and Hotel Noelia Sur in Playa de las americas Tenerife are highly recommended by us if you have children of any ages.

Las Margaritas is a fine hotel. This is the first holiday that we have gone half-board and we were not disappointed. We thought that we would eat out a couple of times in the duration of our holiday but we didn't because the food was that good. Even at 9pm when the kitchen area started to close you would still find an excellent spread of food. The range and choice of food was excellent, and there was always a chef at the back of the room cooking fresh steaks etc while you were deciding what to eat.
The maids in the hotel we very good indeed, and cleaned every day to a high standard. Towels were changed on a daily basis and there was an empty fridge in the room which was excellent for storing drink/chocolate rather than having to try to wedge it into a mini-bar fridge as you normally have to do at hotels. The safe (which cost 30 euro of which 12 is refunded on departure) was excellent - you could choose your own 4 digit code which allowed you access via the front keypad (very secure). We had a room facing the road which might not sound as attractive as one overlooking the pool, but the road was never that busy and besides the sliding balcony doors were double glazed so once shut you could not hear anything anyway. Air conditioning could be altered to working off 1,2 or 3 fans and came as standard.
The actual hotel staff were incredibly helpful and spoke many different languages which made the nightly bingo more fun! The activities were run morning and afternoon, all being free and no obligation. Another part of the hotel adjoined the main section and this had mini-golf and a gym (again free to use). The evening entertainment was excellent (especially The Beatles) and the entertainment staff were very good in their role as bingo callers and award ceremony comperes (especially Fabio!).
The hotel has its own shop selling all range of goods (papers, beach balls, phone cards etc) and has a post box. There is also a hairdresser, sauna and masseur within the hotel. In the evening there was normally a jewellery stall set up opposite the dining room that changed every night.
Drinks prices were reasonable - cocktails (strong!) were 4.50 euro (£3) and the bar ran a happy hour between 11.30 and 12.30 every night where drinks were buy one get one free (except for the cocktails and sangria).
The hotel is on the outskirts of playa d'ingles so is in a quiet area. It would take you about 15 mins to walk to the kasbah. Don't let this put you off though as the taxi service is excellent costing about 2 euro (£1.30) during the day to get to the Kasbah and around 4 euro (£2.70) in the early hours to get back. Taxis are clean, plentiful, and arrive within a couple of minutes when ordering them from reception.
We would definitely stay at this hotel again. You may pay a little more to stay half board but when the food was as good as it was at Las Margaritas (you won't eat your dinner out), and the staff were as friendly as they were, then it is worth every penny.

If it were possible I would give this hotel eleven out of ten.
The staff were so polite and helpful and nothing was too much bother. The rooms are well equipped and kept beautifully clean. At dinner there was so much food it would have been possible to stay a month without eating the same meal twice, all beautifully prepared and cooked.
The hotel which is situated in beautifull gardens is to the rear of Playa del Inglis and about 15 minutes from the beach. However a regular free bus serice runs to and from the hotel.
There is plenty of activity within the area ranging from para gliding to walking.
There is evening and daytime entertainment for both adults and children within the hotel complex.
A great place very highly recommended

Location is on the outskirts of Playa del Ingles and a good 15 - 20 min walk down hill to the beach ( in the heat!!) but free buses are available and also taxi are very cheap! We will hopefully be going again next year caters well for children we have a five year old that enjoyed the kids club this year as there are never many children they get lots of attention!! So its not like a holiday camp at all very classy and should really be a 5 star hotel.

We visited this hotel in February takning a 6 month old baby with us. The hotel staff were wonderful, warming baby bottles, making sure we had a highchair, making a fuss of our baby and even remembering her name! May sound silly but little touches like that made our holiday very relaxing.
I've read some of the reviews and some people may find it's location a bit off putting - but we thought that made it perfect for us! You can walk easily to the lively, noisy bit but return to quiet when you need to and be able to sleep!- perhaps we're getting old!
Either way, excellent place and hope to return in the autumn with our other children in tow.

Hi,
Arrived back on Sunday from this brilliant hotel. The staff were lovely, the food was excellent and the rooms were comfortable. There was plenty of entertainment day and night, didn't make it into the disco as its for over 18's only and we have a young daughter. It's a little too far from the beach but as the hotel run a free regular bus service to Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas beach this was not a problem. Plenty of shops and bars near by especially Harry's Bar 2, extremely cheap drinks!! Had a wonderful time and would definately return to this hotel (next year hopefully).

I visited the hotel in August last year and I was absolutely delighted with it! I stayed half board and did not feel the need to buy lunch most days as I was still full from the tremendous breakfast! Although if I needed to buy food there was an excellent choice of reasonably priced foods available at the bar area situated beside one of the spacious pools.

I shared a room with two other adults and it was definitely big enough, and the shower always had ample hot water.

I never had a problem with getting to the local pubs shops and night clubs as some are about a 15 minute walk away or a 2 euro taxi, however I rarely felt the need to leave the hotel!

The staff were excellent, they provided 5 star entertainment for all ages, and even encouraged the guests to join in! Everything from shuffle board to cabaret!

I would especially like to thank the entertainment team, Vicki, Genie, Giorgio and Marcus for making my holiday so special!

I am returning to Gran Canaria again next year, the only problem for me with the hotel was the price, I found it a tad expensive to stay there!! However I am a student!

If you are looking for a relaxing holiday with all the entertainment you could wish for, go to Barcelo Las Margaritas!

Have only just returned from our holiday and cannot fault the staff, accommodation, food etc etc.We had fabulous weather for the fortnight and myself and my boyfriend couldn't have been happier. The facilities were immaculate, even the pool toilets had a citrus fragrance! The pools were both good but we prefered the quieter one away from all the kids and the food around the pools was cheap and very good.
All the staff were at least bilingual and the reception staff were so helpful. They even ordered us pizza at 1 in the morning!

I went to this hotel in Sept/Oct of 2002 with my boyfriend and was a little disappointed when I first went into our room because it had been decorated in what I can only describe as an attempt at a "modernist" paint scheme with big old paint splodges on the walls and on the bathroom tiles and the bed was (although large) covered in this army style bedding!!!

However that said, I think that was probably the only bad element of the entire holiday... which is pretty good as far as I am concerned. The rest of the hotel, its reception and bar were gorgeous and the service and staff 5 star quality (great food especially if you like big breakfasts) and the entertainment was great and this is coming from someone who generally isn't into the whole "Caberet" stuff but we used to watch the shows (that finished about 11pm or so and then go out into town afterwards).

Daytime entertainment was free and pretty good and you could get as involved as much as you like... lots of fun trying to beat the very competitive Germans.

So all-in-all I would definitely recommend going - although one final point... if you are a bit of a 'stay in your room and not go out much' sort of person, be prepared that the tv in the rooms are set to European channels only which can get a little frustrating listening to film and chart run downs in German, Spanish, Italian.....etc etc... although I think there was Sky News ... whoppee!

Go...!
