| said: Just returned from 2 weeks in Rui Vistamar and all in all only have positive things to say about it.
Having only been used to staying in villa accommodation, we did find the family room a bit small, but regular hotel users will probably be ok with this. However, the room was spotlessly clean on arrival and was cleaned every day. Food was plentiful and varied although as the 2 weeks went on you did see obvious repetition but it was pretty good nonetheless. The restaurant could be quite busy at times and you were allocated a table for dinner which was the table for your entire stay, however, be prepared to be on a table with other people. We found this awkward at times with 2 children who didn't want what we had given them or they were generally playing up and we were sat next to a couple with no children. We found the whole sharing table thing quite stressful.
The hotel's location at the top of a cliff did give you great views from your balcony (which every room has), but to get into Puerto Rico or anywhere else was a good walk (taxi's however are cheap and very reliable)so evening strolls weren't particularly an option. Amadores Beach at the bottom of the hill is lovely with a selection of restaurants and the usual bucket and spade shops. The walk however back up the hill with 2 kids in tow did take us at least 3/4 of an hour, so do take advantage of the free hotel bus that runs back and forth as we did after two attempts at the hill.
Hotel Staff were exceptionally friendly and made everyone feel welcome. Mini and Maxi Clubs for children 4 - 12 were run by a fantastic group of young people (who also provided evening entertainment in the Bar) and our 2 children couldn't wait for the sessions to begin each day (Merel and Dorien being particular favourites of our two. Evening entertainment was okay, but the kids enjoyed the Mini Disco (and as we all know if the kids are happy ......).
The Vistamar is a large and busy hotel but manages to provide a friendly and personal service. All in all we were very pleased with our stay.

| said: Upon arrival we were warmly greeted at reception, instead of the usual from filling, the girl (Debbie - NOT Debs.)took our passports and filled in them for us, leaving us only to have to sign them.
Then we were given a map of the hotel (required for the first few hours only) a key for our room safe (complimentary) TWO door keys for our room (TWO at our request) and pointed in the direction of the poolside buffet/bar after being given a complimentary bottle of water.
The food at the buffet was delicious, varied and HOT. Dinner was 8.30 for the first night of our stay only. I didn't like the table we were allocated, and we were moved without any question.
The staff just could not do enough to help at all times. The rest of our stay we ate at the early seating at our request. There is something for having your own table allocated also, so not having to rush in at the start, take your time, one thing for sure, the food will ALWAYS be there piping hot, cooked in front of you and I have never had steak or prime rib served like that to me in any holiday hotel before. Each cut of meat melted off the fork almost.
The entertainment was briiliantly put together and choreographed by Reuben, with lovely girls, super costumes, no expense spared. It was also good top have a self-service facility for hot drinks, beer and soft drinks. This meant I could mix my own shandy, in my own pint-glass, brought especially from home for that specific purpose. That turned some heads with envy. The Germans were remarkablty subdued also, different when they are are in a MINORITY for a change.
The ONLY thing I could fault the hotel on at all, was the long break of "nothingness" between dinner and the Entertainment, (except the obligatory mini-disco) The kids were running around mad between times, but the PARENTS are to blame for this. First week of term back at school and loads of kids there. It should NOT be allowed, and the Hotel shold punish the PARENTS when their kids misbehave. Maybe a "naughty-room" whre kids and their respective parents are sent to, similar to a sin-bin. Worth a try but the staff just do not want to upset or offend anyone, but those kids offended US. Vicious cirlce I suppose.
All in all a wonderful break with good rooms complete with a/c - mini-fridge - LOADS of cupboard space, and wonderful views from the location on the cliff-top. Only problem now is to lose the weight I gained during the mammoth "eat-in". DON'T say I was greedy, I challenge YOU not to over-eat at this place.
DEFINITELY worth a return visit. Maybe a little expensive, but you get what you pay for.

| said: Wonderful, Brilliant, Excellent! All words that me and my partner used more than once during our weeks stay.
The hotel staff are all friendly helpful and speak a multitude of languages, nothing is too much effort for them to make your stay pleasant
.
The Food is excellent to the point that one pair of trousers didn’t feel comfortable by the end of the week. Brilliant range and choice of different foods. All high quality and fresh.
The whole complex is extremely clean and well organised, with lifts to every part.
Reception willingly hands out free bottles of water and you get a safety deposit box free of charge as well, both firsts for me.
The location of the complex is brilliant you get stunning views out to sea and over the surrounding coastline, you are far enough away from the hub-bub of the main town but close enough (3Euro taxi ride) if you want some action or shopping.
The bars are all excellent offering a range of drinks.
You also get a Pool/Beach towel that you can exchange as many times as you need which if left in your room when the maid calls gets transformed into a swan.
This hotel and holiday were brilliant, both me and my partner have agreed that we will visit here again and we are even looking at the other resorts in which this chain operate.

| said: This was our first trip to Gran Canaria and our first time with the Riu group of hotels, both were excellent. The hotel was very clean with maid service everyday. They even made our towels into swans, elephants etc. The rooms are large enough for a family of three or four and are all air conditioned. There is a satellite tv in every room but only three english channels. Anyone who has stayed in this hotel can confirm that the food is second to none with a massive choice both for breakfast and the evening meal (watch out for the singing chef)There is a signature main meal served every evening and if that is not to your liking there are always three or four different meats to chose from. The hotel is situated on a cliff top giving beautiful views of the ocean but being very hilly perhaps would not be quite so suitable for the elderly or infirm. However, taxi's and buses are very easy to get as there is a taxi rank at the entrance to the hotel grounds. Shopping centre about 1km away but virtually all uphill so can be quite a struggle particularly in the heat. Main area of Puerto Rico a 3 euro taxi ride away and the harbour is well worth a look. The Riu staff all speak excellent English and if there is something they are not sure about they will ask another member of staff. Free bottles of water are available at the reception anytime, day or night. The evening entertainment is second to none and in particular 'Toby' the animacion teams resident 'diva' will having women wanting to kill for a figure like his. All the animacion team seem to just love what they are doing and it shows in their performances, so much energy. Daytime entertainment is good with stupid games that you would not be seen dead doing in the UK but just have to have a go at whilst you are there. The coin and chicken game leaves nothing to the imagination and you must play Sjoelbak (a type of shuffle board)Bingo in afternoons but we tented just to chill out on the numerous sunbeds from about 1ish. The pool bar food is just as good as the main restaurant and drinks are plenty. We enjoyed this holiday so much we have already booked for August 2008 so if you are there at the same time you will see us.

| said: This was the first time we have visited a Riu hotel and we were'nt disappointed. We always stay all inclusive so we knew what to expect but we must say it was fantastic!!The hotel was so clean, the staff were so friendly and the food my god the food what can i say there was so much of it and so much choice - even a diet buffet for anyone willing to stick to one.You were assigned a table number for your whole stay which we thought was a good idea, and yes the tables are quite close together but that wasn't a problem for us.If you didn't fancy an early breakfast you could have one up next to the pool on the 9th floor - there was plenty of choice.Soft drinks, teas, coffee and beer on tap to help yourself and a bar if you wanted anything else alcoholic, a special cappuccino with cream or try a coco loco!!This bar is open until 6pm.There are two sittings for dinner used to be 6.30pm but was changed our 3rd night to 7pm and 9pm.We had the first sitting but didn't go down until 7.30/7.45pm plenty food left. The chefs than start all over again preparing food for the next sitting. The restaurant is on the 8th floor with fantastic sea views. The bar has beer on tap, coffee, tea and soft drinks, everything else you ask at the bar for - only a limited selection of spirits. The main area is non smoking but there is an area attached for smokers with a great balcony for magnificent views.
The rooms are very clean and the beds are very comfortable. You even get your towels made into swans etc.which amused our child. The safes are free which was a first in all inclusives for us.You get a fridge and you ask at reception for bottles of water (large one's) for your room.
We were on floor 3 and the lifts were quite often full so we walked up the stairs, fine until you get to floor 6 then my goodness it's like climbing a mountain but you do get used to it and what good exercise.
Normally the entertainment isn't up to much but i must say we thoroughly enjoyed the animation teams shows and the acts that came in mostly acrobats. The animation team work very hard and are so full of energy. The shows were mostly singing/miming and dancing but they were good especially Toby what a brill dancer/all rounder.
The hotel is on top of a cliff but there's a bus to the beach and you do get used to walking up the hill to go to the shopping centre.
All we can say is what a fantastic holiday and hotel and would we go again - Yes definately!!!!

The food is amazing and is served constantly from early morning until late at night.
Drinks are available at breakfast in the restaraunt, all day from the pool bar and at night in the main entertainment room.
The hotel is on a cliff top so all rooms have an amazing sea view and don't be put off because the hotel offers a coach to Amadores beach and back at regular intervals throughout the day.
The entertainment staff were all amazing, the could all speak at least 5 languages!!!!!! and where their energy came from was beyond us.
We were shocked to see bad reviews of this hotel as it is, to say the least, fabulous.
We would definitely come here for a third time and also saty in another RIU hotel.

Greeted by friendly reception staff given water and all information.
Room very clean excellent shower only the poor hairdryer and no English tv channels let it down.
Buffet style restaurant very busy but all taste catered for had some lovely meals.
As we travelled with our three year old daughter kids entertainment was the main part of the holiday! The miniclub and disco was excellent with the entertainment team working hard to please all day and night which made it made it easy for us to keep her happy.
Hotel is on a high cliff which gave us excellent. Views of the beach which is also worth a visit by hotel run bus.
All the evening entertainment was enjoyable would definitely visit again.

| said: This was the second time we had stayed in this hotel. We were so impressed by our previous visit we booked again which is something we don't normally do. The food is excellent quality and caters for all tastes, not to many chips although they were available. The fresh giant prawns that you had to peel yourself were fantastic. No need to go hungry as there is plenty to choose from.
The staff were very helpful and no question went unanswered.
We did have problems with a couple of Norwegian males next door who for two nights were constantly drunk. The second night one of them managed at 4 in the morning to climb over his balcony onto ours and was banging on the door to be let in. The hotel staff came and dealt with the matter after several phone calls. This incident did not put us off but we did move rooms as it terrified my wife. We had a wonderful stay and would definately return.
We didn't stay and watch the evening entertainment as it was the same as the previous year and the same as in most hotels, with lots of miming of shows. Also as everything was done in about 5 languages it became a bit monotinous.

Facilities were excellent as was the food - the entertainment staff couldn't work any harder but it got a bit tiresome hearing each nights show in four languages!
The buffet was like a rat run and particularly by the pool bar the food was often cold.
Also found some of the other guests quite rude at dinner and breakfast and it all felt a bit 'dog eat dog'.

| said: Hotel Riu Vistamar - Gran Canaria.
My partner and I decided to treat ourselves to a 4* fully inclusive hotel to enable us to fully relax and indulge ourselves. Our rational was that we would pay extra for the holiday to ensure we stayed in a decent hotel, therefore we chose a Thomson Platinum holiday.
When we arrived at Riu Vistamar reception we were pleased to be greeted by very pleasant, professional staff. However when we entered our room we were a little disappointed to find that there was damp on the ceiling in the bathroom and the room standard was average, however we decided that we would make the most of our holiday and not worry about the room.
Unfortunately our (luxury) holiday just seemed to go from bad to worse
The restaurant took on the appearance of a cafeteria not a restaurant, there was no privacy and tables were pushed together so we had little or no space, which we had to share with a family.
The food was a complete let down; although there was a good selection the quality was awful. Every day the same food was served, bad quality meat with each mouthful consisting of fat and gristle, the fish was far from fresh..
Also it seemed that the food that was not eaten at dinner would be served up disguised as another dish the following day!
The entertainment was quite frankly basic and seemed to be aimed at children.
The sound proofing in the room was diabolical, we could hear everything and I mean everything! It sometimes seemed as if we had other people in our room. You can laugh for the first couple of times however it becomes rather annoying spending your entire holiday being woken up at 3,4,&5am by other guests.
The hotel staff were the saving grace as they were friendly and accomodating.
Although we do not usually complain, we feel on this occassion that the hotel was not acceptable as a 4*.
This is certainly the worst holiday for the amount we paid and we would not go back.

Entertainment varied but was generally good. Bar staff worked tremendously hard to keep all nationalities happy. Excellent hotel for couples though caters well for kids too.
Probably not as good for your average teenager though. Easy walk to the lively resort of Puerto Rico but taxi service fast, cheap and efficient.

| said: Well I have to stay that I can't belive the previous post to this found this hotel so poor ! This is our second stay here and we were just as impressed as the last time - and we are pretty choosy. Hotel is very clean and there are regular checks on the rooms by supervisors to ensure the rooms have been cleaned to a high standard.
The food, as always with all inc. was buffet style but plenty of choice and certainly not only burgers etc. at lunch time. Two breakfasts, from 8.00 in the restaurant and from 10.00 at the pool bar which then merges into lunch - meanwhile lunch is also available from 1.00 in the restaurant - then afternoon tea/cakes etc. at the pool bar then dinner at night - I fail to see how anyone could not find something to suit their taste. Carvery every night in the restaurant with a different meat being served by the chef on each occasion. We ate out 3 nights but only because there as so many lovely restaurants we like to visit(Guantanamo, El Brasero etc.) and not because there was anything wrong with the hotel food.
Location is up a hill but free bus to Amadores beach and only a five minute walk to the Europa Centre.
Staff were all very nice and some helped me out with my very very limited few words of Spanish, encouraging me to speak with them in their own language and praising when I managed to get it right !
Entertainment was a mixed bag but better than when we were there two years ago. A lot of effort goes into the shows and although it's not really our cup of tea it's certainly ideal if you have small kids.
Only downsides were the third bed in our room was so uncomfortable that our 15 year old daughter (who travelled as an adult) ended up sleeping in our bed. The 3rd bed is a "put me up" and would probably do a small child but certainly not a full fare paying adult ! (and my daughter is a small 15 year old). One other small niggle was no lights on the balconies so impossible to sit out after dark with a book/drink/pack of cards etc.
Would still go back here though as hotel is of a very high standard and most definitely deserves its 4 stars.

The food, although plenty of quantity was of a very poor standard, so much so that we ate out on 4 nights of the 7 we where staying! The lunch time menu was pretty much the same, pizza and burgers everyday with mountains of salad, however, the salad was made up of all kinds of stuff, cold cauliflower with mayo!!! Left over veg gone cold!! Strange to say the least. Don't get me wrong, you could always fill yourself up on a meal time, but enjoying your meal was a different matter. The evening meal seatting arrangements are diabolical, sat like you where at school on long tables with no privousy what so ever.
Not once did we spend the day round the pool as it was far to busy, we may have got a sun bed somewhere but getting in the pool without been bombed by one of the million kids would have been impossible.
One good point is that the hotel put a bus service on to get to the beach as the hotels on top of a cliff so waliking would be a killer!!
Rooms where nice enough, but then again this is supposed to be a 4 star!!! Air con was rubbish however a large fan in the room keeps it fairly cool.
Would not return to this hotel again, ever!!! Not a snob, but it was very very poor.

| said: Having experienced a number of all inclusive hotels over the years (some better than others), this has to be one of the better choices.
The hotel is very self contained and as we were only in Gran Canaria for a chilled out 1 week, we didn't have to venture out. Food was fantastic from smoothies and freshly made pancakes in the morning for breakfast to a wide selection of absolutely anything you can imagine for dinner and somewhere in between lunch if you can manage this. Children were catered for with the usual Kids food (pizza, burgers, hot dogs, chips etc).
All staff were helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble.
The hotel was located at the top of a steep hill and you do have to walk up quite an incline to get out - but taxis are cheap and apart from the odd shopping trip, you really don't have to venture out as everything you need is on tap within the complex. Any sight seeing trips organised would collect you and deposit you back to the hotel.
We had no problems with sun beds but the hotel wasn't operating at full capacity until the week-end before we left but we still managed to find a spot although cannot comment this would still be the case at the hight of summer / school holidays. The bottom pool was of a safe depth for children over 6 with a splash pool beside the kids club for the smaller ones.
Entertainment team worked hard - Kids clubs on twice per day with mini disco at night. Evening shows were of a reasonable standard and considering the animation staff put these on themselves they really did a great job (and no tacky bingo to waste 1 hour!!. The non smoking bar area was great and made sitting there a pleasant experience. There is a smoking area directly outside which is covered and has a glass partition enabling you to see into the bar area. The decor and seating in the bar could do with an up-grading but being an all year round resort I appreciate this would be difficult.
There always seemed to be something going on by the pool but they never tried to force you into participating if you didn't want to
Would we venture back - yes, absolutely - however, take a hairdryer with you if you need one as the appliances in the rooms aren't very good (a very insignificant complaint !

| said: The Hotel staff were the friendliest I have come across and really helpful. Nothing seemed too much for them and they were always making a fuss of the children.
The hotel food was excellent always varied and the variety was excellent, you certainly wouldn’t get bored.
The staff again were always helpful and friendly. There were two main sittings for the evening meal 7.30pm and 9.00 pm we were initially pre-booked for the 7.30pm meal but due to everyone wanting to stay by the pool for longer this became a bit of a rush to get changed. So we asked if we could change times and this was arranged immediately without any fuss.
The location seems to be a big issue for a lot of people. Yes you are on top of a cliff and it is a long walk down and certainly an energy sapping walk up to the hotel but the hotel provides a courtesy coach which runs virtually on the half hour all day and takes you down to the beach which is about 5 minutes away. This coach starts around 9.00am. The main benefits of being on top of the cliff has to be the fantastic sea views which you get from every room! Also you are not surrounded by any neighbouring hotels or hoards of people, which is good.
The entertainment was very good and different every night, the shows contents are varied and try to cater for everyone’s tastes.
The only slight problem we encountered was that due to our late meal sitting by the time we arrived at the show bar there were no seats left to sit on so it was standing room only and because it was mid August there wasn’t any left. If you want to stay and watch the shows book the earlier meal sitting!
We stayed at the hotel for a week between the 9th-16th August 06. There were four of us staying, two adults and two children, Upon arrival we found that the hotel had arranged for us two adjoining rooms on the third floor, which was excellent as we were told initially on making the booking that the two rooms would be as close together as possible.
The only problem we encountered with the hotel was the lifts! As we were on the third floor and the restaurant/reception is floor eight and the pools are floor nine we depended on the three lifts a lot. Unfortunately very rarely were all three lifts working and during mealtimes you would wait in excess of ten minutes! So ended up working up to the restaurant on numerous occasions! As a tip I would suggest to book a room on the upper floors.
The sunbeds around the bottom pool were a problem as our family found that you had to get by the pool by 7.30 am! To place your towels on the bed and then have to stay with your bed otherwise someone would remove the towels whether it be staff or other foreign guests remained a mystery.
Overall though the hotel was excellent and I would thoroughly recommend it. If you like families and mingling go in the school holidays if you want a slighter more laid back time then avoid these dates.

What can you say about the food. I think wow sums it up. As this was our first time all inclusive, thanks to the hotel it definately won't be our last.
After reading all the comments on the location of the hotel i cannot believe that people complained about the 'hill'. It clearly states in our brochure exactly where the hotel is situated so it surely does in others!! After the airport transfer and seeing where other hotels were situated, I personally was thrilled to find the vistamar on top of the hill and out of the way. I just recommend that if you are travelling with disabled or the elderly that you are fine with the 'hill' but if not look elsewhere. Besides there is a curtesy bus that runs down to the beach and most excursions provide transport from the hotel.
All the staff were second to none. They made meal times pleasant, the receptionists were always approachable and cleaners always had a word of greeting for you. All were very professional but had their wild side.
The entertainment as far as we were concerned was very good. They worked very hard to try and please everybody. Obviously some things were better than others. Everybodys tastes are different so pleases one would not please everybody.
I would definately visit the hotel again. Maybe not late August as the hotel is very busy.

| said: We were recommend this hotel, and can honestly say we had a great time.
Food was excellent and variety of dishes to choose from each night. I can say the whole duration of our stay (11 nights) we did not have the same food twice. Lunchtime at the pool bar was burgers, pizza, pasta, fish, meat and salads.
The hotel was kept spotless, cleaners always cleaning, either your room or hotel corridors or washing down all paths and steps. Our maid was very good and kept asking if we were happy with her work.
The hotel staff were very good, especially the animacion team who work very very hard. Very good for Kids Clubs the girls that work there are always cheerful and always made the kids feel welcome.
Evening entertainment was ok variety of shows (did feel a bit like Butlins sometimes).
The only two things that were a problem were the sunbeds if you were not there by 9.00am you would find it hard to get a bed. Most beds were reserved by 8.30am which was a pain especially when there was a sign saying no beds to be reserved before 9.00am or towels would be removed but we never saw this. My sister went last September and had no probs with the sunbeds so maybe August is a very busy period.
The other prob was the lifts. Family rooms are on floors 1 and 2 and trying to get a lift to level 8 (reception and dining room) and level 9 (pools) was a nightmare especially during dining periods and in the morning trying to get to the pools. Sometimes waited 5 mins so it was quicker to walk the stairs. Not very good for young children or the elderly.
Hotel location not bad a very very steep hill to get you up to the shops at the top not much to do up there and a taxi ride down to town centre.
I would visit hotel again but maybe not in August when very busy.

| said: This is the second Rui we have stayed at. It was a good standard hotel for a 4* and the food, service and entertainment - especially for the children - was excellent. The Animacion Team really worked their socks off most evenings producing shows that worked in 5 different languages!!
No complaints regarding the quality of alchohol classed as 'local' - no watering down etc etc. Beer was OK too!
Staff really helpful and friendly from chalet maids to bar staff to Reception staff and of course the Animacion Team and even the Manager.
We got a bit fed up with the daily rush to secure a sun bed - around the pool you need a base - and a parasol! Space was limited on that front.
Kids activities were various and kept them keen to go back for more - a bonus, thank you Pascale!! The Mini-Club girls were amazingly cheerful - always!!
Activities for adults were OK - rifle shooting, water aerobics, water polo, volleyball, football, basketball and Bingo!!

| said: Having visited Puerto Rico for many years the RIU is a class above anything in the area. This hotel stands out and is an all inclusive haven. It is not faultless by any means, everyone to their own. But the standards are excellent.
The hotel is spotless from the rooms to the pool areas. The food is to die for and that comes from 4 adults who like food!! Breakfast is pretty standard but lunch and the evening meals are superb - so much choice to mention.
The entertainment is in house by a multi national team who 'try their upmost' to entertain you from Dawn to Dusk. They do not pester you to join in games it is there if you want to. They do 5 evening shows a week which some are very funny and others bordering average.
The hotel was quite full but you could always get a seat in the lounge. The bar staff are very, very good and not just underpaid locals who haven't a clue what you are asking for!
The location is second to none!! There is a 'steep' hill out to the main road but it can be managed. If you do venture out, the reception will willingly get a taxi for you. All the usual Bars and entertainment in the main resort areas are within a 3 Euro taxi ride. The one area that sticks out in our thoughts is the willingness of ALL the staff to make your holiday a memorable one. What makes this hotel different from most in Puerto Rico is that it is only made up of about 25% British and it is not your run of the mill facility.
This is our third time at the Riu and it just gets better and better.

The food was very nice couldn't complain only issue that the tables were pushed together. The food around the pools during the day was also very good always hot and fresh.
The rooms were cleaned every day all rooms have see views.
The hill was a bit of a mission to the hotel but ok on the way down as its down hill to the beach. Would defenlty go back to the hotel again.

| said: I was looking forward to my stay at the Vistamar because of all the great reviews I had read on this site.
The hotel was absolutely spotless, nothing you could fault there, rooms where kept to a very high standard as well, we had a lovely little balcony and a nice view.
The food was plentiful and we loved the freshly made smoothies of a morning in the restaurant. We booked most evenings for the Barbacoa upstairs, as it was very very hectic in the restaurant downstairs and quite noisy.
I didn't mind the location although the hill just to walk from the hotel to the centre is a very steep one, and I was always breathless when I got to the top. They also supply a bus every half hour down to the beach area which is lovely plenty of bars and shops, we had lunch there quite a few times and a taxi back to the hotel is only a couple of euros.
The staff are very friendly and polite and nothing seems too much trouble, they choose there staff well.
The only thing we weren't looking forward to was the entertainment but it was good, we had quite a few laughs in there most evenings. We sat by the bar most nights and before your glass was empty the barman had placed another one there, the drinks are of good quality to, didn't seem to be any of that cheap rubbish you get at some all inclusives.
I would stay at this hotel again without a doubt and also would try another Riu hotel elsewhere, the standards are superb.

The Hotel was spotlessly clean, cleaners around at all times day and night.
Yes, the hill is very steep and would not be suitable to get to the beach under your own steam but the hotel courtesy bus is a full size bus and gets you down to the beach, you can take all your lilo's etc as they let you put them in the side locker, however, don't get on the bus with any sand on you or your buckets, etc as the driver is extremely proud of his bus and keeps it immaculate, you will be given a brush and invited to get all the sand off before you board!
Staff are fabulous, full of smiles and can't do enough for you.
The entertainers did a wonderful job, working from morning until night, I do not know where they found the energy.
Enjoyed this hotel so much we have booked to go again in December.

| said: The food was excellent and always hot, except sometimes at the poolside snack bar, although the salads were excellent, plenty of fresh fruit. Pigeons are a nuisance there as well, although only about 15 of them! They swamped one table while a 7 year old was briefly left alone, these should be dealt with really!
We were on the 5th floor and had excellent views. The hotel was very clean and the maid service in the rooms was spot on.
The location gave fantastic views from the room and pools although we found restrictive at nights. We like to take a walk before or after dinner and in the end we taxied to Puerto Rico for a couple of hours before dinner, the taxis are very cheap around 4 euros to Puerto Rico.
The staff were very friendly and all made an effort to say hello etc, the reception staff were polite and loved to make jokes.
The concert room is now smoke free, with a glassed off area for those that do.The hotel does lack another inside bar/piano bar etc at night where you can have a quiet drink and chat. A gate near the top pool would cut out a lot of walking up the hill. Also missing is a lounge area where you can relax and read or take a drink. One more thing was a nuisance really, the bars close at 12 midnight, an extra hour or two without leaving the hotel (we were willing to pay) would be nice! We did feel as though we were being shepherded to bed.
But overall we felt very comfortable here and had a thoroughly nice relaxing holiday.

| said: The hotel was very clean and the room small but lovely. The view from the balcony was beautiful, especially at night.
The food was gobsmackingly gorgeous and plentiful. Breakfast from 8.00 to 10.30, pool bar for snacks (which consisted of hot dogs, cheese and ham toasties, etc.) from 10.30 to 17.30, and dinner (tea) was one of two sittings, either 18.30 or 20.30, which if required was easily changed on request. As you can see there was no time to go hungry.
The staff were very polite, and as said by most people were very helpful and eager to please.
There are no 2 ways about it, the hill is definitely a problem whether you're able bodied or not! It's not always necessary to get a taxi, especially if you're only going to the Europa shopping centre (as it's only a 5 minute walk!) and the free bus mentioned by others only goes to the beach. The hotel shop is very small and doesn't sell newspapers, snacks, etc, which means going to the hotel supermarket next door. So as you can see, there is really no avoiding climbing the hill, which is very steep and leaves you breathless!
The entertainment was diabolical and mostly just catered for the Germans, but the entertainment room was nice.
The only other problem with the hotel is the fact that on the day we were due to leave, the foyer was cram-packed with people and there was nowhere for people waiting for their coaches to sit! As is provided for the luggage, I would have expected a courtesy room of some sort to sit in while waiting.

Reading reports on this site for over a year now we might have been woried about a few concerns, enough to put us off coming. Let me put some to rest. The Hill. Yes it's a long way up and down. But there's a free bus, and it's exclusive to this hotel. It starts at 9a.m. and finishes at 5 p.m.
So does most of the beach activity.
The rooms are large, cleaned daily, are well appointed and all have balconies with panoramic views.
The food.
There's not enough space to tell how impressed we were at the quality, variety and freshness of a menu to suit ten different nationalities. Mouth watering. Staff were excellent in all departments. Entertainment crew worked from 9 a.m. til 12 midnight like Trojans. Not my bag but they can't please everyone.
Perhaps 3 sittings at dinner instead of 2 would help spread a sometimes cramped seating arrangement where you might find yourself squeezing between tables with plates and glasses full. Not much to moan about with this hotel at all. Would I go again? Like a shot!

| said: Far more positives than negatives.
The only negative that screams out is the position. The hill mentioned in other reviews is every bit as bad as has been suggested. If you like a stroll after your evening meal there really isn't anywhere to go except the Europa shopping centre when you get to the top of it.
Facilities in the hotel were great. Always enough sun loungers, and if like us, you don't want to join in the many daytime activities, you could go onto the solarium where it feels as though you are on a cruise ship, surrounded by sea. No children seem to get on there either.
Activities for children seemed to be excellent, and the kids clubs were well used. Maybe that is why there were at least 4 classfulls of them there instead of being at school!!
No fault could be found with the food as it was plentiful and varied. Similarly the drinks were plentiful and varied.
Staff couldn't be more helpful. Always cheerful and pleasant.
The rooms were quite big and all seem to overlook the sea. As mentioned in previous reviews though, try to get a room on the fourth or fifth floor as the views will be better. Plenty of storage space in the rooms. Not even my wife could fill all the drawers and wardrobe!
The evening entertainment was some of the best we have seen in the 6 RIU hotels that we have visited so far. The entertainment staff were very committed and worked very hard to privide entertainment of a high quality.
Would we go again??? No!! This has nothing at all to do with the hotel, but everything to do with that hill and the general position of the hotel. If you want a crash out week, going nowhere, doing nothing, being well fed and watered, this is the place for you.

We were not disappointed. The flights were superb. The welcome at the Hotel was warm and the room was spotless and the view we had took our breath away.
Everything about this holiday was 10 out of 10 and that was cemented by the food. Every evening in the restaurant we were welcomed by the Manager, Chefs and waiters/s and we were pampered the whole time we were there and the food was 5 star not 4 star. The staff could not do enough for us and they were not overpowering or in our face.
The resort was excellent and the hills may not suit all but the taxis are prompt and cheap. I will go back again to the Hotel and will also be trying other Riu Hotels

| said: Our 4th floor room was spotlessly clean, well maintained, spacious - with generous storage space: 2 double wardrobes with plenty of coathangers, 2 chests of drawers, drawers beside the bed and shelf space in the bathroom.
The hotel itself is in a wonderful position overlooking the coastline and man made beach at Playa Amadores, Puerto Rico.
The hill into the smaller of the two resort centres is very steep, but not very long, so manageable for the fit and able, but not recommended for the elderly, less mobile or families with young kids.
We actually chose the hotel as we hoped it would prevent there being too many children staying there as we like peace and quiet!
The hotel has a very small shop in the lobby, however we discovered a good Spar supermarket in the hotel next door that seemed to sell everything we'd forgotten to pack or ran out of.
The constant supply of food and drink was the other reason we opted to stay at the Vistamar! The food was of the highest standard, and certainly not repetitive, despite reading other reports, and we found that during a week's stay at the resort, you could quite easily get through breakfast, lunch and dinner without eating the same thing twice!
The hotel staff were all very happy and friendly and the in house entertainment was always amusing, if a little varied.
The in house 'animation' team work very hard throughout the day and evening for the guests and their best show was actually a transvestite cabaret, brilliant! A couple of outside entertainment acts were appearing, but were pretty bad, so we made use of the outdoor pool bar in the evenings!
I wouldn't want to visit the hotel in high summer season as I would imagine it would be very cramped around the pool and in the restaurant, but for our late week away for some last minute sun, it was perfect and we will certainly re-visit the Vistamar.

| said: We have visited Puerto Rico yearly since 1996 and have alway had to stay in self catering because there were no proper hotels. Then we found the Riu Vistamar and for marginally more money that the self catering found a beautifully placed hotel with air conditioned rooms. No more sweating while trying to get ready for your evening meal after a shower!
We found the staff overall so accommodating and helpful.
The standard of food was of that you would expect to get on a cruise ship and more.
We had rooms overlooking the Amadores beach, for which there was a courtesy bus. The view was amazing and the standard of cleanliness was second to none. For myself and my family there will be no other place to go in Gran Canaria from now on.
The only downsides, and they are very minor, are that the gate from the upstairs pool (if open) would have been very welcome when I puffed my way up the hill to the Europa centre.
Also although the nightly entertainment was done with great enthusiasm by the team, some nights it lacked a certain something. But then you can't please all the people all the time.
I would recommend this hotel to absolutely anyone and defy you to have a wonderful time.

| said: This was our first time we have visited Gran Canaria, so as you can imagine, we was very excited.
After a long day of travelling, all we wanted to do was get to our room's unpack our stuff and relax with a few drinks.
As we approached the hotel rui Vistamar, our first opinion of the hotel was that it was very clean from the outside, and had been obviously kept well looked after. As we booked into our hotel, the staff was very friendl'y, and the hotel was very clean, which was a big relief.
The staff at reception was very reassuring, and made sure we was well looked after, at this point, we was very pleased, as we arrived, the weather was extremley hot, so they gave us pleny of bottled water. They said that we have just missed a massive heat wave, we was relieved as it was in it's 40's when we got there. God I was so excited.
We was allocated our room, so we went up there by the lift. Our first opinion of the room was that, it was clean and modern, it could do with a bit of updating, but that was'nt a problem. Everyday, the cleaner's was very polite, and very good at their job, they kept our room clean every day, and alway's changed the bed and towels everyday. We were happy.
We had a beautiful view from our balcony, as you could see the lovely clear sea. It was perfect. During our stay, it was my partner's birthday, the hotel manager left out some alcohol, flowers and a card. We felt this was wonderful, and we felt very rewarded.
The food was good quality, a change everytime, there was lovley cakes. We was very happy. The drink's was at a good standard. We could'nt ask for more. The seating area was spacious, although there was downfall, the hotel was full of Germans, and they tend to take up most of the chair's, and were very arrogent. This was a major put off to our stay.
The entertainement was brilliant, the entertainement staff worked really hard to keep everyone happy.
We went to the beach a few times, although you had to get a bus to take you down to the beach, as the hotel was situated on a hill, we would prefer that the beach was a walk away. The beach was lovely, clear and calm, I could'nt ask for more.
We had a brilliant time, and we was so sad to leave, it was well worth for going for 2 week's!!!
Well done to all the staff who worked hard!!!
Gran Canaria is brilliant.

| said: We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Club Hotel Riu Vistamar at Playa Amadores.
This was by far the best holiday we have ever had. Before travelling I read the hotel reviews, and found them to be most helpful, one comment being that the lounge bar could get very smokey and the entertainment was a little boring.
The issue of the smokey lounge seems to have been addressed, as there was quite a large non-smoking designated area, which suited us well.We thought the Animacion entertainment team did a fantastic job. Apart from all the day activities, ranging from rifle shooting, volleyball, football, cocktail games to aquafit, aerobics ets.
They then did a brilliant job putting on shows in the evening. On a couple of occasions they were better than the outside entertainment. One guy in particular - Toby was fantastic. Their last nights rendition of "Grease" packed in a full house. We e-mailed before going over, and got a 5th floor room. Food, superb, freshly cooked on spot, and amazing variety, even fussy eaters would find something! cleanliness 5*, staff very helpful too.
The only down side would be the location; again before arriving the reviews told of "the hill" down to the hotel. Yes steep it was, but, being all inclusive, you need not even go from the hotel if you don't want to, as the courtesy bus took you down to the beach & back, which was amazingly clean too.
We can honestly say it was the best holiday we have ever had; so much so, that we have booked again for next year.
Well recommended.

It wasn't really up to much but you could get soft drinks, beer and coffee so we made do with that and waited for breakfast!
The food was excellent each morning and evening. I am a fussy eater but even I had a full belly most nights!
We had a room on the 5th floor with the best views down to Amadores beach. I did email asking for this floor and also 3 rooms together. In the end we were 2 doors away from the rest of our party which was OK.
The location of the hotel is amazing. The walk upto the Eurpoa centre is a killer although it does get easier the more times you do it!
The staff were excellent, from reception and bar staff to the waiters and maids nothing was to much trouble for them. The reception staff were particularly friendly and helpful.
Entertainment was OK not the best but the animation team really earn their euros - they are on the go from morning till night we wondered if they ever slept! Saying that the acts that were brought in weren't much better than the resident team!
Would I vistit this hotel again? Yes definetly and I would certainly recommend it to others. We all had an excellent time.

We found the Reception staff to be very friendly and helpful and actually apologised that we were not able to keep our room on, even though we were leaving only a few hours after booking out.
The food was pretty routine in that most hotels try to please its multi-national guests, but each night a particular speciality is presented and this was of a very high standard.
Dinner is of two sittings and we asked if we can change from 9pm to 7 pm and this was done immediately and did not present a problem.
We did not experience much of the entertainment, but what we did see was pretty good. The pool-side bar was open each evening from 9.30 pm to midnight, so we spent most of our evenings there.
The hotel is on the top of a cliff, but to walk to the resort you had to walk up 'Cardiac Hill'. But once up, it was worth it. The bus to the beach was very efficient and because it was every thirty minutes, you could tale your time getting ready.
Around the pools at the hotel there were plenty of sunbeds, and even if you went there in the afternoon there were still some empty. There were also information provided stating that no-one can reserve a sunbed and if it is not occupied for an hour the pool staff can remove the towel.
Great hotel and well worth a visit.

| said: On way to hotel droped off some familys at the two other RIU hotels on island, both looked amazing an we hoped the Vistamar would look just as good! Following a long upwards drive through Amadores we arrived at the Vistamar our first impressions were blinkered as we arrived early hours of morning, however reception was quiet so we got checked in very swiftly. On checking in they tell you all about meal and bus times an explain about pool towels - the usual. Fortunatly all information is printed on pieces of paper a saving grace as I barley understood what the young german man had said to me, he spoke very quickly and sounded like the gay german reporter ali-g plays in his show. Thankfully all other dealings with reception were problem free. The reception itself was a bit bland by no means will you be blown away by first impressions it just felt an looked a bit boring and bland. However it served its purpose, my only complaint with it was the fact that it was a smoking zone so the first thing you are hit with is the stench of smoke which remains throughout the day!
We were allocated a room on the first floor and as with a previous review were disgusted to find that the only view we had was of other guests fag ends, broken plates, presumably soiled towels and all other odd ends of rubbish the idiots on floors above us had decided to launch from their balconys. The room was a bit tatty/dinjy and just didnt have a pleasant feel to it, a quick quiet word with the duty manager and we were moved straight to the 3rd floor with a view of amadores beech, room felt much fresher and brighter. Room itself was adequate plenty room for storage good sized balcony, bathroom of quality but just lacked that luxury touch that could give it a 5star accreditation. Room was cleaned well daily as was outside coridor and balcony area - maids very helpfull and friendly. On one occasion had the misfortune of discovering some vomit a worse for wear guest and deposited and presumably forgoten about however on informing maid it was cleaned up immediatley sparing any further disgrace. Only other detail I had issue with regarding cleanliness was the highchairs we used for our bay. On occasion we found them to be caked in food matter and took it upon ourselfs to purchase bacterial wipes and clean the chair prior to and post use. The chairs themselves were relatively usless in most cases they were broken entirley or the strapes didnt work meaning you are constantly trying to prevent your baby standing up or falling out whilst trying to eat, got a bit annoying in by week two!
The food was fantastic on arrival a buffet was laid on for late arriving guests from what I could see we were the only ones - the buffet table was the size of a bus and was packed with everything and anything - we felt so guilty we had barley managed to dent the supply it must have taken ages to prepare and you could tell it was the first time it had seen the table! First impressions were that the food would be excellent - and it was. Throughout the 2 weeks we were spoilt for choice, you could have eaten the same thing every day or something completely different every day - it was incredible. Most hot food eg steak, chicked, fish was cooked there and then at cooking stations. There was also a carvery every night all meat was cooked to perfection and was of exceptional quality - im jealous thinking about it! The dining room isnt particularly fancy but once you start eating your thoughts are purley on what to eat next. You are given and keep the same table for evening meals. Breakfast and lunch is a free for all but alwasys ample room and endless supply of food - never ran out of anything, think they have a hidden underground farm! If you fancy a special meal then book with the head waiter and eat up in the pool bar restaraunt, its lovely we only went the once as we had a 1yr old with us who kinda killed the romantic ambience up there, at one point throwing a boiled potato at a young man - form then his attention was on my daughter wondering what was going to be thrown next and not on his bewildered but beautifull young fiance! Cant bum up the food anymore you will love it if you dont you cannot be human.
Staff were friendly and professional 100% of time most local however a good number german - especially reception area.
Entertainment ran form dawn to dusk - literally! I dont know how they did it they were incredible - proves the food is high energy! There is a board at reception which details days activitys and times - dont worry if you forgett as they come round the entire pool area advertsing which activity is next. Good range from shooting to bingo something for everyone, be warnded if you win the activity you have to go on stage to collect a certificate (quiet a specticale) we went out the night I won the shooting! At night time there is a show, most nights its done by the same staff who have been working all day but you would never know they all looked fresh as a daisy - and were always wearing a smile. Shows were what you would expect - some people review poorly for entertaiment but I think they forget its not meant to be a west end show! You can tell the staff put a lot of time and effort into there performances and are geniunely gratefull and pleased by any positive respone to the acts. Most performances are tongue in cheek with a humerous edge to them this is what made them so enjoyable - I think if they didnt add humour it would have been painfull to watch. Toby is a NBDQ (natural born drag queen) he should be on a stage somewhere he was amazing. Cant fault entertainment - i was sober most nights and still enjoyed it all those that says its poor need to have a go themselves.
On the whole I would give the holiday 7/10 I wouldnt go back purley because im not taken by Gran Canaria itself found it a right mix of a place outside resort areas dirty, likes of europa and kasbah centres not to my taste lots of people trying to get you in dirty bars. To dine there would be like eating in a run down smelly outdoor shopping centre. Some quality little restaraunts such as oscars at the beech front in peurto rico but found nice ones such as this one few and far betweem. I felt the all inclusive board a bit mundane - for me it was like being a resident in a nursing home with your day pre-determined and very repetative. Would consider a Riu resort elsewhere but certainly not in the canaries/spain. Hope you found this review helpfull im sure you will have a smashing time if you have already or away to book up. P.S sorry about spelling/gramour - maths is my thing!

| said: My partner and I visited the Riu Vistamar Amadores after cancelling a holiday we were due to go on with First Choice after the recent bombing in Sharm El Sheik. We were glad we did.
On our arrival we were allocated a first floor room, however, both being non smokers we were disgusted to see that the ground below our balcony was littered with cigarette ends. A phone call to reception pointing out this fact, and also that I have knee problems which make stairs difficult, resulted in an immediate move to a room on the fourth floor. We were more than happy with the response, as Riu say, they want you to have a happy holiday.
The room was of a good size, looking towards Puerto Rico, with ample storage space for us, a mini fridge and with a pleasant and very clean bathroom
The hotel generally is immaculate, spotlessly clean in all areas. The gardens and plants are beautifully tended, as is the pool area, you are supplied on arrival with pool towels which are exchanged on a daily basis at the poolside.
Incidentally the Hotel does practice an unattended sunbed policy which is a good thing. Guests may get up early to book their favourite spot, but if you leave your belongings unattended before 9am they will be removed.
This is the first hotel we have actually seen this practice observed at and it works!! Needess to say there were always empty spaces whatever time of day you arrived.
The food is wonderful, I would not believe anyone who could fault the variety of dishes available to select from. Something to suit everyone, with a special children's selection available for the younger ones. Water, beer, wine, hot and soft drinks are 'on tap', self service, at all times during the day and into the evening up to midnight. Bottled water is available from reception on a 24hour basis.
At all times we found the staff to be friendly, cheerful and helpful.
Some adverse comments have appeared in these reviews with regard to entertainment. I do not agree with all that has been said. The animations team at this hotel are the best we have seen in 9 years of A/I holidays. A mixture of nationalities, they work non stop starting from 8am in the morning with rehearsals, then running gym/aerobic classes, Mini Club, Maxi Club, water Polo, five a side football, rifle shooting and volley ball together with other 'games' throughout the day. After all of this, at 8pm they begin the evening entertainment with the 'mini disco, which, needless to say, the kids love. With regard to the shows, yes, they do mime, but so does Madonna!!
Their dancing and costumes are excellent. Special mention must be made of Toby who makes a very glamourous 'lady'!! The entertainment is on a two weekly cycle, so you do not see the same programme twice.
The hotel location is a bit out of the way, the driveway of the hotel is very steep going out to the Europa Centre nearby, but the free half hourly bus down to the nearby man-made beach is a great idea for those who chose to use it.
Our only criticism is that on occasions there was a strong smell of sewage up in the pool area especially early morning, we assume that must have some connection to the disposal systems in use at the hotel.
All in all, following our second visit to a Riu Hotel,(our first being the more adult/couples based Riu Palace, Playacar, Mexico), we would highly recommend the chain and particularly the Vistamar, as providing a super family holiday which is excellent value for money.

| said: First impressions of the hotel were excellent as the steep drive is lined with pots of beautiful plants.
The reception staff were very friendly and efficient and allocated keys very quickly. We decide to take our own luggage, although that would have been brought to our room if we wanted.
The room was spotless, with a great view towards Puerto Rico, something we never tired of.
Also there is a fantastic amount of storage space in the rooms, with lots of hangers and drawers both large and small. The fridge is in a cupboard and is large enough to stand up 1.5 litre bottles, plus I also found an ice cube tray at the back of it.
Air con and fan both very efficient, but we got a little confused as to why some of the electrical items weren't working at times and found that we needed to play with the switches on the wall to turn them on.
Bathroom and shower, great, lots of hot water and clean towels daily.
All of the outside areas were very clean too and constantly being cleared by the staff, who from the reception right down to the odd job men, all spoke and greeted us whenever we passed them.
Plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas, plus nice comfy matresses and hotel pool towels which we changed each day, great lets you keep your own nice and clean.
The food is outstanding, from 8.00am until 10.30pm. Breakfast catered for every nationality, with freshly squeezed fruit juices on many occasions, champagne on Sunday, etc, but if you don't make it to the dining room, then they cater for you at the pool bar until 12 noon.
Then out come the next rounds, all the salads, which accompany lots of freshly cooked meats, pastas, pizzas, toasties, burgers etc. Too much to choose from!
Afternoon tea from 3pm and also help yourself to as much tea, coffee, water, soft drinks, wine or beer, all day long, both here, the main restaurant and in the salon bar. Although there is also a bar if you prefer.
Dinner again was superb, with every piece of meat you can imagine, even duck or rabbit. Lots of freshly cooked fish, prawns, mussels and sqid, gorgeous!
We regularly ate 5 courses, so forget the diets!
I was not expecting wonders from the entertainment, having read other's reviews, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, but we got our entertainment from the wonderful bar staff and their antics.
The free bus runs a very good service down to the beach, which is lovely and clean and not too packed.
The only thing I would point out is that if you like to wander out of the hotel for a mooch around, there isn't much in the area, although we had a great night at the Barbacoa on the Sunday, where the Drifters were performing. This is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel and in the small Europa centre. The main commercial centre in Puerto Rico is a 3 euro taxi ride away, well worth a look.
We didn't do any of the trips with Thomson, but got the ferry from P. Rico to Mogan, 9 euros return, which is a lovely little harbour with some nice shops and bars etc. (A lot cheaper than going with tour operators)
All in all, we had a fantastic time, very relaxing but thoroughly contented.
This is our second stay at a Riu and would recommend them to anyone!

| said: We travelled to the hotel in July 2005 and I do have to say that it was very good!
The hotel itself was very clean and there were no sign of cockroaches.
The lifts in the hotel are hopeless and they are very hard to catch.
The food that was provided was very good there was something for everyone from pizzas to pastas to currys etc everyone will eat something. There is also a bbq which you can attend when you want as long as you ask the head waiter first.
The hotels location is a bit out of the way, when we looked at the hotel it said that it was on a bank, but it was a hill and it was a steep hill. But there is a free bus which takes you to the beach and back.
The hotel staff are very friendly and most of them speak english. All of the reception staff are great they are very help full. The entertainment team are also great the kids always have something to do and they all speak a variety of languages.
The entertainment is great every day there is somethings that kids, teenages and adluts can do!!
The night time entertainment is also good!!
I would return to the hotel because everything was brilliant and i found very little to complain about!!

Hotel room nice and clean
Pool areas nice
Food is ok but very much the same every lunch and dinner times. The self service drinks dispensers work very rarely and when they did work the drinks were flat.
The hotel staff are quite friendly but the reception staff are not so good.
The hotel is 4 star I would say 2 or 3 star at the very best.
If you are looking for a really good all inclusive hotel with good food and drinks!! Book another hotel.
