With the resemblance of an old school, the rooms were dark (shutters on the windows had to be kept closed as there is a troop of monkeys within the grounds), the shower produced a mere trickle and the beds were hard.
You have to be in the hotel before 6 or 7pm because of the wildlife, though saying this monkeys and wild boar were all that we saw. There’s an average buffet every night with a mixture of fish, meat and vegetarian Indian meals and alcohol is available here.
Personally we were both disappointed with Periyar as a whole. Not quite sure why you’d want to spend over the odds at the other two hotels within the national park. As for the river tours to spot wildlife, there were too many people (a good 10 boats) and the concept of ‘sanctuary’ was lost on all the Indians whilst travelling up and down the lake…it was like being with a herd of elephants.
