| said: We stayed here for 9 nights and on arrival were really happy with the ambiance and general feel of the place.
We were delighted we could be accommodated at a days notice (just a credit card number given over the phone to confirm our stay), but were advised we would have to move rooms a few times which was fine.
The boys who work here are friendly and always willing to help and advise on where to visit, and the hotel uses a rickshaw driver called Raj who for 50 rupees will take you into Palolem village itself (15 Min's walk) where all the restaurants are located. There were a few things we should highlight:
Rooms
In each of the three rooms we stayed in there were problems. The sheets in the first room smelt as though they weren’t clean – we asked for them to be changed, but we think the problem might be they are dried behind the kitchen, so they might as well be drying near a bonfire. The second room stank of smelly feet, which we asked to be cleaned immediately, the drains in the shower would on occasions reek every day, and the toilet would often not flush properly.
The third room next to the restaurant smelt of damp and plaster was chipped off the wall in the shower..there was damp coming through behind the wall of the bathroom next to the clothes storage racks – obviously a problem for anyone staying in the room.
Owners
A comment on another well known hotel review site made reference to the owners being pre-occupied with family matters and you don’t feel as though you can approach them - which is what we found.
I think the owners have let their daughter and husband run the place.
Had a chat with the husband to point out the problems in the room and found him to be defensive from his choice of words and body language. There was an air of public school arrogance about him.
He said he couldn’t smell the drains when he went into the room (I did say intermittent smell) and couldn’t work out why, but I sensed this had been a problem before – he did though put a new drain cover on which helped. He tried to seal the leak in the damp bathroom, but it didn’t really do the job.
I asked for a discount and was given 1000 rupees off the bill, which he clearly didn’t agree with, but had this approved by his wife.
Food
Great food, ate there on our first night and thoroughly enjoyed our meal, but……after bringing to attention the problems in the room and getting a discount, rightly or wrongly we decided to eat again in the restaurant as there was a live musical performance.
During our 5 month trip in India the only funny tummy I had was after this second meal. Coincidence? Draw your own conclusions.
The hotel has a lot going for it, there’s a nice pool and lounge area, it’s in a lovely setting, has great staff, but it does need a lick of fresh paint, a general freshen up and a crash course in customer service for the husband.
