| said: The Akas Hotel Cabins are Fabulous! There are about 10 'semi cabins' about 2 / 3 mins from the hotel set in the woods nearby. You could be in the middle of nowhere, but you are close to everything and have everything you need. Cross country and walking trails start on the main path - about a 2 minute walk from your door. They are what I call 'rustic' inside but if you go to their web site their is a 360 clip of the interior. If you want modern cabins try the Kanerva ones at the same hotel - very modern but I think they lack the character and location. They are well laid out having a cupboard as you enter for your skis and boots extra and a space for drying. The location means that it is extremely peaceful and quiet -
The hotel has a pool and health area and is half board. For any extras there is a very good supermarket which is about a 10 mins walk minimum but . We only spent money (apart from trips) on snacks -
The restaurant at the hotel was a surprise at first - not at all what I expected. It was a self service buffet and very laid back. Don't expect to be waited on hand and foot! After a few days we realised that most Finnish people were clearing their own tables and more English people began to follow. Its not that the tables didn't get cleared, its just that I get the feeling that helping and doing your own was appreciated and the 'thing to do'in Finland. I may be wrong, but 'mucking in' never hurt anyone.
There was an excellent choice at breakfast which we could not fault. The evening meal went from 5 - 7pm (which we thought was a little early, but by day 2 we were so worn out that it suited us fine!)The choice was more limited to what we've been used to : a soup, salad bar, then 2 main courses (plus one for the children) and one / two sweets. At first this may sound limiting but we both came away very impressed with the quality of the food we ate. It was delicious! If it had been presented in a posh hotel people would rave about it. The food was traditonal Lappish food, and that's what we like. The soups and sweets in particular were excellent. One night I had very little choice as the 2 main courses were food I know I do not like, but I had the childrens meal of beefburgers and chips - 'shock, horror' some people may say, but we laughed about it and I made up for it with extra pudding!
The dress code was very laid back - when you've come from outside at minus 31 with about 6 layers on you really don't want to be messing about! Most people were in ski wear - just be aware though that once you are inside it is extremely hot so ski trousers and a thin top will be enough. There is a hanging rack by the door of the hotel where people can leave their extra layers etc and it is perfectly safe.
There are free toboggans at the hotel - you can go and 'play' or use them to fetch your shopping in!
Cabins have a small kitchenette with everything, (fridge, microwave, 2 ring hob) the log fire (plus logs), a sauna, under floor heated shower room / bathroom that we used as a drying area (!) The cabin is heated by thermostat and on the lowest it was 20 degrees and on 4 could rocket to way over 35 if you were cold ----- I was really hot so we opened the small side window most days! If you use your log fire then its very warm!
The water was 'pure' and ok to drink from the tap - the only place we've ever been brave enough not end up buying bottles of water all the time!
The tv on in the cabins has pay movies (not the rude ones!) and also tv in English with Finish subtitles which is helpful! The cabins were well stocked with 2 sets of towels and bedding for the week and thing like extra paper towels for the kitchen, matches.
The logs for the log fire are very close in a small shed that you can open with your door key and a box outside your cabin was useful to empty the ashes for your fire. The tip for the fire is to read the instructions and check that your damper stays opne when it is lit -- apart from that warming yourself by a log fire after a day in the snow, while the snow outside falls like glitter is really magical!
(For any big kids - the supermarket sells marshmellows so you can have some fun with the fire!)
We have already booked for next February - 2 days home! - and can;t wait - it really is a winter wonderland and no words will every describe the tranquility and sheer beauty of this wonderful part of the world.
