| said: We spent a week at Griffon Forest Lodges in June 2007, staying in a Gardeners Lodge. When we booked our holiday, all the reviews we had seen had been glowing, so we were slightly concerned when there was a crop of bad reviews just before we went. Our concerns proved to be unfounded, however, as we had a really lovely time there.
The staff were helpful and friendly when we arrived at reception and we waited a matter of minutes for someone to come round and show us how to operate the hot tub. One of the wooden recliner chairs turned out to be broken and was replaced the day we reported it. We couldn’t help but wonder if some of the people who posted negative reviews had actually given the staff the opportunity to deal with their complaints. It is fair to say that there were a few cobwebs in the bathroom and that other areas of the lodge were a bit dusty, but this did not spoil our holiday in any way.
Unfortunately, the British weather did try to spoil our holiday by giving us three days of almost constant rain. This meant that we weren’t able to use the hot tub as much as we would have liked, but we did end up borrowing quite a few DVDs from reception. The rain also stopped us from taking the Tykes Trail on our last night – we ended up driving there instead. The food was very expensive, but well worth it as it was the best meal we had all holiday. Other good places we ate at were the White Bear Inn in Stillington, the Crown and Cushion in Welburn, Caesar’s Pizzeria in Haxby and the Pizza Express on Museum Street in York city centre. We also bought food from the nearby Monks Cross Retail Park – there is a big Sainsbury’s there and a 24hr ASDA.
Despite the weather, we did manage to do quite a bit of sightseeing. We would thoroughly recommend getting a York Pass (http://www.yorkpass.com/), especially if you are planning to go sightseeing in York itself. We got the 3 day passes at £34 each and easily went to £50 worth of attractions. Castle Howard, the York Castle Museum, The York Minster and Undercroft and the World of James Herriot were the attractions we liked best. You definitely need to have a car to make the most of visiting this area. There were some information brochures in the lodge if you need ideas for places to visit.
The setting of the lodges is great – in the middle of the forest, surrounded by birds, rabbits and squirrels – and my partner even managed to see a badger one night. We didn’t feel at all overlooked in our lodge, and there was only one evening when we could hear any of the other guests. We made good use of the hot tub, bbq and terrace area while the weather was dry, and then the heating, kitchen and DVD player when it was wet. Towels and bathrobes are supplied, along with dishwasher tablets and some tea, coffee and biscuits. We were only given one loo roll though, which we were surprised at, but the staff said that this was quite normal for a self catering break (not in our experience!) – so take your own supplies. It would also be worth taking coat hangers, matches, washing up liquid and a disposable bbq. Overall, we had a really great time at Griffon Forest and wouldn’t hesitate to return in future.

The location was in the middle of a forest and very quite. The staff were very helpful and understanding when I rang to say we were stuck in traffic.
We had a poachers lodge which was open plan with a cosy seating area with sat tv and dvd a nice kitchen, dining area with everything you need for cooking, a seperate bedroom area with a huge fourposter, a six foot round spa bath and double sink unit the lodge also had a seperate toilet and shower room.
Outside is decked with patio furniture, bbq and a sunken hottub which was the highlight for us, to sit in the hot bubbles drinking champagne when there is snow on the ground is so relaxing.
When you arrive there is champagne on ice, fresh flowers and belgium chocolates which is a nice touch.
