| said: Hotel Vera Playa. A naturist hotel situated, (unsurprisingly), close to the town of Vera, Costa Almeria.
We have visited and enjoyed this hotel a few times in the past. The occasion prior to our last visit was some eight years ago. As the hotel is only a few hours drive for us, and as it was my wife’s’ birthday last week, we decided to spend a night there…..bad move. Things have changed.
On arrival at the hotel at 1PM we were told that our room was not ready and we would have to wait for an hour for it to be cleaned. The large lobby, which once had many comfortable sofas and armchairs, is now empty except for a few water features. With nowhere to wait in comfort we went for a walk.
Once we had eventually checked in we were pointed in the direction of our room. The hotel does not appear to have any porters and even though we only had the one piece of luggage, we witnessed other guests struggling with their own cases.
Our room was dated and in need of decoration.
The main feature of the hotel is the large pool. For some reason, rows of palm trees (3 deep) have been planted all around it, so that the sun beds, which are also arranged in rows with a near military precision, are almost all in the shade. Finding no vacant sun beds we decided to try the beach, which is accessed via a security gate.
It is through no fault of the hotel that the sand is a dirty charcoal colour, nor can they help the fact that the slightest breeze causes a virtual sandstorm which makes sunbathing impossible. With visibility down to about 20 yards we opted for a drink in the bar.
Meals are served buffet style. The restaurant can best be described as ‘efficient’; with stark lighting and passable food, you go in…you eat…you leave.
There is a small stage near the pool for evening entertainment. The entertainers are childish and extremely amateur. Positioning ourselves as far away from this rubbish as possible we ordered a drink and waited…..and waited!.....45 minutes later it arrived. Judging by the comments of people sitting near to us this was quite a result. They had been waiting longer.
At the stroke of midnight all the lights were turned off in the bar and around the pool, with total disregard to guests whose drinks had still not arrived. A not too subtle hint that we should go and find entertainment elsewhere.
A small annex of the hotel houses ‘El Pub’ (!!!!!)……unfortunately El Pub had no beer and the bored barman did not seem concerned with rectifying the situation….so we used one of the bars outside the hotel.
Walking past the pool, back to our room in the early hours, we noticed that every sun bed around the pool had been ‘reserved’ by guests placing towels and various other objects on them. Apparently, to get a sun bed you have to nab a vacant one and claim it as your own for the duration of your stay. Either that or risk the beach.
The price for one nights stay in August?
273 Euro !!!!!!! It is 105 Euro per person, per night. With a 30% supplement for staying less than 3 nights.
For that price we were entitled to a lot better.
This 3 star hotel (IMO) would be expensive at a quarter of the price.
