Given that I read both positive and negative comments on various websites I was a bit apprehensive about going to Summer Island Village - no need as I have just come back from a great holiday where I spent 12 nights in SIV and 3 nights in Dubai on my way home.

We flew with Emirates on 19 May and this airline puts many other to shame – the total journey time was approx 12 hours and was the best flight ever. Plenty of leg room, our own TV with a selection of films, music, and games. The food and the service was first class and I felt as if I was there in no time.

Arrived in Male (Maldives) where we gave our names at the desk and were then shown to a speedboat for our 40 minute boat ride to SIV. There were no delays and the speedboat was a good way to see other atolls and experience this transfer to our resort. It was a nice sunny day and couldn’t wait to get to our own island.

We arrived at SIV and were met by one of the staff who showed us to the reception area to check in. We were given a cold wet towel and a glass of orange and after completing a check in form we were shown to our rooms. We were in a 4 in a block type building which was sheltered by some palm trees and had the beach on our doorstep. No need to get up early to put towels on the sunbeds as they are numbered and each room has their own sunbeds.

After unpacking we went for a walk to the jetty and were amazed by all the fish, the first one we spotted was a small shark but that didn’t put us off from venturing into the water. The water is crystal clear and the sight of fish of all sizes and colours was amazing – on with the snorkel, mask and fins and lets see what we can see. We were in the water every day as it was too hot to lie in the sun and were also able to feed the fish. The sight of the sting rays coming in for feeding is amazing, I didn’t realise they were as big, also look out for the Moray Eels at the rocks by the jetty. We went night fishing which we enjoyed and managed to catch a few fish which were cooked for us the following evening. There are also snorkelling trips available (2 free per day) where you are taken out to another reef to snorkel and see more colourful fish and marine life. The diving school and watersports centre can arrange scuba diving, windsurfing, kayaking if that’s your thing.

The island is spotless and the staff are constantly sweeping up leaves and ensuring the beach and walkways remains tidy. The room boys ensure your room is kept clean and you have fresh towels daily but please remember and take your own beach towels. There is no need to wear shoes while at SIV, I had taken flip flops but didn’t even need to wear them as you are walking on sand even in the restaurant, the reception and the bar. One thing I did miss was a swimming pool – I know you have the Indian Ocean on your doorstep but a pool without fish and salt would have made a pleasant change. In our second week we had a few rain showers – one lasted the whole night and I have never seen rain like this. However, the next day You would never have known.

We had no complaints about the food – breakfasts, lunches and dinners all had a good selection and thanks to our waiter Zian for looking after us. At the first sitting you are shown to a table which you use for the duration of your holiday so no need to hunt for tables at meal times. There was fish, chicken, beef, pasta, rice, soup, loads of salad to mention a few so there was always something to suit our taste – also themed nights (Italian, Mexican, Chinese etc) and the staff are always there to help.

Night time can be a bit boring if you are into partying every night but if you enjoy having a few drinks on the beach and then moving to the bar to talk to other holidaymakers and sit and relax then you will enjoy it. The bar closes at 12 but you can continue drinking and chatting into the wee small hours. Thanks to Chanda and the rest of the bar staff for ensuring we didn’t get thirsty !

There’s also the spa and two of us had a full body aromatherapy message lasting 1 hour and for $55 it’s well worth trying it.

One thing to mention is that staff expect to be tipped and I suppose its good manners and shows your appreciation. Once you tip the bar staff they will remember your order and will look after you, similarly tip your waiter and your drinks will be sitting on your table as soon as he sees you coming into the restaurant. A $20 tip is a lot of money to the staff.

For anyone who was at SIV at the same time as me I was the unlucky person to dislocate my shoulder while I was there. I would like to thank Marcus and the rest of the staff on SIV for looking after me. I had to endure a 90 minute boat ride to Male to get to hospital but the guys on the boat made it as comfortable as possible, the Cosmos rep (Lucy) was great and made sure I was looked after. To be honest I don’t know what we’d have done if she hadn’t met us in Male. Its bad enough having an accident at home but I have to say the doctors and nurses at the ADK Hospital were first class (well I suppose I was paying for it after all), explained everything they were doing and made sure I was looked after. Thankfully I wasn’t kept in but had to enjoy the rest of my holiday with my arm strapped up. Special thanks to Thomas, Pauline and Barbara for looking after me.

After 12 nights in the Maldives we were ready to leave………….we had also booked 3 nights in Dubai which was well worth it. We left SIV by seaplane which gave us a chance to see the other atolls. As we had an early morning flight to Dubai we left SIV the day before and spent about 10 hours in Male (hotel room provided by Cosmos). Male is really busy and compact – don’t know if I could stay there but was good to see it. The temp in Dubai was 107F and even I was struggling with the heat. The city is amazing, the height of the buildings has to be seen to be believed and our 3 nights was over too quickly. Managed to do some shopping, some sun bathing and some sightseeing and will definitely go back again.

That’s me………….I’ve been to the Maldives and experienced it.
Would I do it again………………perhaps in about 5 years time.

We stayed In Bunglows on the 300x500M island. Our room was cleaned twice a day, fresh linen and towels once a day.

The all inclusive package was wonderful: excellent non repetitive food, fresh omelettes for breakfast each morning. Everything is so laid back, but with so much preparation going on in the background to make sure your stay is hassle free.

As our friends were on honeymoon the Manager organised a fruit basket in their room, and Mohammed (room boy) decorated their bed with flower and hearts.

Although we arrived by speed boat we decided to pay the $99 each for a sea plane return - well worth it. We took over 130 snaps, mostly of the fish, as we could not get over how many different species you could swim with.

Highly recommend this island, and would love to go back again.

Flights from Manchester via Dubai to Male, Maldives with Emirates.

This was my first flight with Emirates and it was far and away the best i've been on. New aircraft complimentary drinks pleasant profession staff. Even with the stop at Dubai the 14 hour journey could have been worse.

Once at Male we were picked up by speed boat and taken to Summer Island. The broshure says the journey takes about 1.45mins, well ours took 45mins and was not pleasant unless you call hanging on to the side of the boat while been thown about pleasant. if this was designed to have you book a seaplane transfer on the home journey, it worked.

Once at the island we were greeted at the jetty and taken to reception were we completed the formalities. They provide you with a fruit juice which was nice. Took my shoes off and wore nothing on my feet for the next two weeks, heaven.

We stayed in one of the water bungalows (room 110) and although a bit dated was fine. You only sleep there right? Glass floor was nice, saw plenty of fish. For privacy, try and get bungalows 107 to 110.

Food was buffet style and i have to say i thought this was excellent. I have stayed in many carribean all inclusive but this was better than all of them.

Drinks were ok, beer was nice and cold and the wife enjoyed the shorts, mostly rum and coke.

The island itself is small, there is nothing to do but laze about on the beach or have a few drinks at the bar. It takes about 10 minutes to walk round going slowly, this is exactly what we wanted. If you are looking for great night life and lots of entertainment, go elsewere although they did have a disco on Saturday nights which we enjoyed.

I love to snorkel. There isn't much of a reef at the island although you will still see plenty round the island incuding reef sharks, trigger fish, moray eels. Best spot is on the right hand side of the Jetty. They provide free boat trips four times a day out to the local reef. Apparantly there are three reefs but numbers one and two are damaged so they only took us out to reef three. Some nice coral and plenty of fish to see. Although this was good, it wasn't as good as the reefs i saw in the Red Sea at Sharm.

Staff were very friendly, especially Ram the security man.

Beach is also great.

Paid $99 each for seaplane transfer on home jouney and this was fantastic, well worth doing

Would i travel here again? If i want to completly switch off, yes i would
