Do not be put off by other hotel reviews, lovely hotel and will be visiting again.

We arrived at 5;30pm and were greeted at reception. Were asked to fill in some details and was given a nice cold glass of lemon juice. We then had a porter take our bags to the room, he showed us where the lights and heating were and said have a good stay. First impresstions were fab. Hotel is beautiful. definaly 4 star.

Staff - they were all really friendly and had a joke with you. Animation team put on a show everynight. Changing ladies and michael jackson show definalty worth watching.

Food - There were plenty of salads, a different choice of potato every night, mashed boiled, chips. fish dishes and meat dishes. most things are labled. there is also bread avialable breakfast lunch and dinner. The deserts were yum. They made a huge cake everyday. To be honest we only made breakfast once on the first day and we had a late night everynight.

Drinks - Quite limited. Coke, sprite and fanta. orange juice and lemon juice. Very generous with the spirits, vodka, gin, beers got you drunk. There are cocktails available too at a small charge. about £1.50 and they do get you very very drunk!! There is also a club next door to the hotel, you cannot hear the music from the hotel and we didnt even know it was there. turn right out of the hotel and walk for about 30 seconds and you arrive at La Luna Discoteque. open until about 4am.

Location - Hotel is 15 mins walk from airport. you turn right out of the airport cross the road and walk straight for 15 mins. if you are tired get a taxi. do not pay more than 5 dinar, it literally take 2 mins if that in a taxi. we walked to the airport on the way home as it is sooo close. Although it is close to the airport do not be put off, you cannot hear any planes taking off at all. Hotel is also right on the beach. You can also pay 2dinar to hire a matress for sunbeds for the whole day. although i never hired one i was fine lying on my towel on a sunbed.
There is also a train station on the way from the airport to the hotel, you can go to Monastir or Sousse.train fair was cheap and trains run often. If you do go to Monastir go to the Marina, lovely bars and resturants.

Things to do - always activities going on all day volley ball, darts, tennis, golf, basketball, there are also books and board games. There is also in indoor pool, very hot, just like a bath. there is a kids club also. You can get a henna tattoo, massage, manicure, turkish bath. all at a charge.
There are also jets skis and camel rides, prices are on the beach.

Weather was really really lovely. we went 11th november for a week, i packed jeans and jumpers and regreted it. i got a nice tan. very warm but cold when wind blows. bring a jacket for evening if you go this time of year.

Cant think of anything else to say, had a fab time and would go again, if you would like any other info, please please contact me on mikaela_joy@hotmail.co.uk and i will be happy to tell you anything you need to know.

The hotel is very close to the airport (walking distance of 25 minutes) but the noise of the planes taking off is really not a problem at all. On arriving at the hotel the waiter bought us over a much welcomed cold drink and we were very impressed with the Tunisian design of the reception area.

Our doubts soon started to creep in with regards to the language barrier as I'm not too sure whether the receptionists English was really that bad, or he just didn’t like the English.

We eventually got taken to our room by a waiter that although very polite, also couldn’t speak much English. When we asked him what time lunch was he said six dot dot three o and we obviously misunderstood the closing time as when we got there was told it was too late to eat.

We had been up since 3 am and had only eaten a sandwich on the plane. I suggested that we see if the shop in the hotel was open and then realised that we didn’t have any local dinar (as you cannot change your money until you get to Tunisia) we asked reception where the nearest cash machine was located and he said we would have to go back to the airport, or they change money between 10am and 1pm we decided to go to bed and get up early for breakfast.

On walking into the restaurant I was just put off by all the flies everywhere and the food was only lukewarm and we both decided the croissants were the only safe bet. Unfortunately as the day went on the food didn’t get any better and actually after three days I couldn’t even face going up there. However, everyday fresh pizzas were made by the beach at 12.30 and pancakes at 3.30 this is what we lived on the rest of the holiday.

The language barrier there was a real problem, unless you came from Germany or France, and that was about 95% of the customers. I can’t say that I actually enjoyed their company either as I found them such a rude, greedy, and arrogant race, although the reception staff seemed to love them.

We did get talking to the waiters who actually gave us habit of information of where we could go and some general advice, as we had no idea about anything, not even that there was a theatre above reception we could have gone to in the evening.

We gathered it was just for the children, but to be honest, any entertainment would have been nice rather than the pack of cards we bought from the hotel shop. I can honestly say that the only thing that made the holiday for us was the weather, the waiters and the Tunisian rep that worked in the hotel shop. very, very hard for the little money that they get.

Our room was nice and so clean, again the cleaners worked very What lovely, funny and helpful people they were and workhard and so polite and friendly.

Hotel itself:
The hotel is about a 3 minute taxi ride from the airport so be careful not to get ripped off as me and my boyfriend did! The taxi driver charged us £10 sterling as we didn't have any Tunisian dinars (he originally wanted £12!) Also when you arrive at the airport don't let someone come and take your luggage for you, they only want money, one guy as soon as we collected our luggage, came and grabbed our cases off us, we didn't need any help carrying our luggage (we both fit and healthy 20 year olds), but he insisted and mumbled something about a taxi, so we presumed he was a taxi driver, so we followed him to the taxi stand where he pointed to a taxi and then wanted money off us just for carrying our cases about 8 metres to the taxi rank, (which was where we was heading anyway), we didn't have any change and me being the soft idiot that I am gave him £5, so in total we paid £15 to get from the airport to our hotel.

This obviously gave us a bad start as me and boyfriend started arguing about it when we got to the hotel, so don't be silly like me, don't let anyone take your luggage for you (unless you need the help), and I wouldn't pay more than £5 or 10 dinar (which works out at £4) to get to the hotel.

Once we got to the hotel we decided to forget about the taxi/ airport incident and we found the hotel to be lovely and clean. Our air conditioning didn't work and we tried on several occasions to get it fixed, but the maintenance guy either didn't turn up or when he did on one occasion, he fiddled about with the air conditioning and then said he would come back shortly with more tools, and asked us to wait in the room, but after about an hour and a half, we were sick of waiting as it was glorious outside and we didn't want to waste our day sitting in the hotel room, so we went out. We gave up on the air conditioning, but we got used to heat after a few days, so it didn't really bother us.

Food and drink:
Regarding the food, it wasnt gorgeous, but the salads were always nice and varied, and the pizza's were pretty nice too, they were made fresh in front of you and cooked in a big stone oven by the beach bar, they also grilled fresh fish and vegetables by the beach bar, which were always pretty nice too. Regarding the food in the actual restaurant, it looked OK, but being a veggie (who also eats fish so not a proper veggie) there wasn't much choice for me other than salad and soups, there was always a lot of meat dishes if you like your meat, but there was always a lot of flies buzzing around the food in the restaurant which was a bit off putting.

The wines were a bit vinegary (but to be honest for the price we paid for this holiday I wasn't expecting pinot grigio, but if you mixed the it with lemonade and made a spritzer it wasn't too bad!

The beers tasted a little watered down, but the spirits always tasted strong, and they weren't mean with the spirits either, (Sometimes I had to ask the bar staff not to put as much in!) which lead to a few mornings with a sore head!

Staff:
The animation staff were really friendly and always tried to get you involved in the daily activities, but equally they respected if you didn't want to get involved. And I agree with Parkinson, Titi was great! The animation staff worked so hard too, the ran all the daily activities from volleyball, football, water polo, archery, belly dancing...and they provided the entertainment in the evening, where they performed some pretty great and tiring (by the looks of it) comedy and dance routines!

Location and things to do:
The hotel is situated directly on a white sandy beach where there was plenty of water sports to do, but it was kind of in the middle of no where, so if you wanted to go out you had to either get a taxi or bus. On a couple of occasions we went into Monastir by shuttle bus. We found Monastir to be very busy, and we got bothered a lot by people trying to sell us things, and look out for men who come up to you saying ' I work at your hotel it is my day off today' as they will be trying to get something out of you, if you are into your shopping, then its great for that, you can pick up some nice little presents at bargain prices, but if not, you should head down to Monastir marina away from all the hustle and bustle of the shopping part.

The marina was lovely, there were several restaurants/ bars/ cafes there. We got a gorgeous bottle of rose wine (Which made a nice change from the hotels), the waiter served it in an ice bucket, with some complimentary olives, and it only cost 6.5 dinars which is about £2.80, it was lovely just to relax watching the boats, so you can eat and drink out very cheaply!

Ive realised I'm rambling on a bit so I'll finish by saying over all, especially for the price we paid: £750 for the 2 of us, all inclusive for 2 weeks, we had a great time, the weather was hot and sunny every day, so if you just want to relax by the pool or on the beach, and you're not too fussed about leaving the hotel too often then you'l enjoy it!!

I would more than likely come back again!

We went to Primasol for half term & went with a very open mind as reading previous reports. However we were pleasantly surprised & had a fabulous week there. Hardly any british there but still mingled and enjoyed ourselves. The staff were brilliant - especially Titi - plenty to do in the daytime.

The only downside was so many flies & thought the hotel should provide covers for the buffet restaurant.

The hotel is situated within 5 minutes from Monastir Airport. It's worth knowing that the taxi drivers ask for £5.00 sterling, if you havent got it, then don't give them more than 10 dinars, it's literally walking distance.

The hotel was impressive when you walked in and we were greeted by a porter, immaculately dressed, took our baggage and then we were given a drink. This i thought was very welcoming.

There was some confusion over the type of room that we were allocated. The tour operator assured us that we would have a double-bedded room with seaview/pool view. Our first room didnt have either. We did manage to change the room but only at a cost of 70 dinars (£35 for the week). Even though i feel we were mislead by the tour operator, the room was worth it. The room was clean, towels were changed everyday, and the room cleaned everyday.

The hotel food could have been a lot better. To begin with the food was fairly luke warm, but got hotter as the week progressed. The main issue was that you didnt know what you were eating. There were always salads, and a number of hot dishes - buffet style, and then lunch and evening times, there were fresh pastas being made for you. Breakfasts again, mainly buffet style but one bonus was that eggs were served fresh for you, you could have fried eggs, omelettes with whatever filling you wanted and pancakes, all hot! At lunch there was often a BBQ going, usually with fish and vegetables, but also a pizza oven. You wouldnt starve, just some of the combinations of the food types were a little bit strange. The restaurant was big, but no air conditioning and was rather hot! and sometimes attracted a few flies.

The hotel location was off a main road that links Monastir with Sousse and directly opposite the Airport. Monastir town was a short taxi ride away (7 dinars)there was a quiet marina with cafes and restaurants. The hotel was directly on the beach, you weren't able to walk too far on the beach in any direction as it really didnt go anywhere. Ideal for a relaxing holiday. The beach in places was very powdery and white, but in other places bit dirty with seaweed. The sunloungers plentiful but there was a charge for the sunpads that you put on the sunloungers to make them more comfortable (2 dinar per sunlounger - less than £1.00)

Hotel staff were predominantly nice and pleasant. But there was quite a language barrier, the language predominantly spoken was French and German.

Entertainment was mainly through the Animation team of the hotel, however there was a live show on the Saturday by the best act in Tunisia 'The Changing Ladies' you had to pay 10 dinars each for this and to be honest, the hotel animation team were far better. The Animation team did their best to include everyone in the activities throughout the day, to begin with you felt a bit pressured to do something, but as the week went on when you said 'no' it meant that you didnt want to do something. Activities in the day included, beach volleyball, darts, water aerobics, french boules, archery. There was also free use of pedalos, but you had to pay for jet skiing (about 40 dinars for 12 mins)and there were other water sports, skiing, paragliding, banana boats. Also the opportunity to go scuba diving, again at a cost.

I would visit this hotel again, a great relaxing break, May time, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees.

The cleaners were constantly at work and the hotel was almost immaculate in my opinon.

Towels changed daily though bedding wasn't changed during our 7 day stay.

Food was bland but if you like eggs you're fine. I lived off them for a week and came back slimmer, so there you go.

Location was fine, a taxi cost 5 dinar despite the fact that 2dinar is already inflated enough. Remember, it is a poor country. Prices are not comparable to ours. Generally, everything is inflated by aleast two thirds. Honestly!

Entertainment was provided by 'animators' who worked all day and night. You could finally get some respite when they went home at 12am. Unless they and the bar staff followed you to the disco next door. In my opinion, that is unprofessional. Mind you, I only worked in the business for 5 years, what would I know.

I would not visit this hotel again, even for free, thank you very much...

My family and I all twenty one of us really enjoyed this holiday.

We started off with a bit of a rough start as our rooms were on the third or fourth floor but with the lift out of order and with having two babies(1was 4mths and the other was 18mths)in prams they weren't suitable, but reception were more than happy to change us rooms and we were placed on the ground floor. Once in our rooms we found them to be very clean.

The location of the hotel was ideal really as it was about 5 minutes from the airport and about the same distance from the train station.

The beach is directly on the back of the hotel.

The staff were always nice especially the catering and entertainment staff they were fantastic.

The food was very nice, but I would say that for breakfast if you dont like eggs there isnt much else to chose from. The rest of the days menu couldnt say we found any problems there was a few choices.

The drinks menu I would say didnt have as much choice as when we have been to other resorts,as the cocktail there was only a selected few and there was a small charge, then the only drinks u could have for free were(vodka, wines, brandy and then beer).
softdrinks availble were coke, lemonade, fanta and two different jucies not sure what they were.

I would definitely return to this hotel.

I could write an essay about our stay in Tunisia but will keep it as brief as I can. However, I can see myself elaborating on many points due to the nature of our experiences...

Firstly, some background info:

Couple (myself and my wife, 31 & 29)
10 Days from the 10th to the 20th Sept
Paid just under £800, ('all-inclusive' for the both of us not £800 each)
Never been to Tunisia before

Review:

To begin with, I'd like to point out that I am purely reviewing the hotel and it's facilities and our general experience there. I'll try and drop in a general bit at the end about the resort and Tunisia in general from a first timer's point of view.

The golden (if you'll pardon the pun) question when you leave a review is "would you stay there again/recommend it to anyone else". As far as the Primasol Golden Beach is concerned, the answer would be a big fat "no", unless you got the holiday for such a ridiculously cheap price, it negated the drawbacks you'll come across and you have the means (and don't mind paying) to eat out every evening.

We went for an all-inclusive package. With the benefit of hindsight, let me clarify what 'all-inclusive' means at the Golden Beach:

Food:
3 meals a day (I'll describe our experience with the food below but it's not for the faint hearted) plus tea/coffee and afternoon savouries (doughnuts/pancakes etc)

Drink:

Soft Drinks: Cola, Lemonade, Sparkling Orange plus what can only be described as two 'squash' drinks
Alcohol: One draught beer (Celtia, which to be fair was OK) and a very limited selection of no-named spirits plus local wines (which would have gone great on your chips…)

Cocktails were chargeable

Ice Creams were chargeable

Watersports were all chargeable

A safety deposit box was chargeable

Sauna/Massage was chargeable

We booked the holiday through lowcostbeds.com and as such, it was a 'mix and match' holiday. By that, I mean that we flew out via Thomson Airways (think very much like a Ryanair or Easyjet style flight with allocated seating) but the hotel itself was a completely independent booking by lowcostbeds. When we first arrived (circa 10pm local time), we checked in at reception after a taxi drive to the hotel to be told our room was not ready (at 10pm?!?!) and we would be put in a family sized room for the evening. This was, to be honest, a pain as it meant we couldn't unpack or settle in. However, it was late, we were tired and didn't want to argue and were told to report to reception at 10am the next day where we would be allocated our actual room. Also, everything was shut apart from the bars so we couldn't get anything to eat except for a dried-out baguette that we had to PAY for (all-inclusive?!!?). The next morning, we went to reception to be allocated our actual room and the guy behind the reception desk told us we could keep the family room we were in. I asked him to confirm if this was going to be for the entire holiday and he said yes. "Fantastic!" we thought, a family sized room when we only paid for a standard sized room (family room was twice the size and had a sort of lounge and was much roomier). We went back to the room and unpacked all our stuff. Four days later, we got a note under the door to go to reception. We went to reception and were then told the hotel was full and we had to move because we did not need a family room. As you can imagine, we weren't happy and politely but firmly argued that it wasn't fair on us having to waste time and pack up all our stuff, move rooms, unpack etc when we were told we didn't have to move. However, the reception staff and subsequently the manager became quite aggressive, especially towards my wife who is a much more calmer and 'to the point' arguer than me. We weren't going to win so took it on the chin, packed our stuff and moved. What really upset us was the way the whole situation was handled. The entire attitude was aggressive and very much a case of "what's your problem?". In retrospect, we should have demanded our original room on arrival…that's what I understand another English couple did. They had to wait an hour or so but got their room that night...

If you want a safety deposit box, you have to hire it. Also, it is not in your room but near the reception. Lastly, as well as the key you're issued with, you have to go to reception to get the master key and use both simultaneously to open the door. A complete pain, I think you'll agree. Whilst I remember, you have to provide a £20 sterling deposit for the box. They would not accept TD as a deposit. Come the end of the holiday when we went to get it back, we were told they could not find £20 to give back to us. After again arguing we were offered Euros but refused and after another 10 minutes of arguing, suddenly our £20 'appeared' in the back room and was given to us. I wonder how many other people have lost their deposits because they were too worn out to argue?

FOOD: As we were all inclusive, we had the opportunity to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. After the fourth day, all we bothered with was breakfast which was only made passable by the pastries, croissants etc on offer. Lunch and dinner appeared to be the same EVERY SINGLE DAY and was barely edible by taste and the fact that there were flies all over it if you weren't there when it was first served. The final straw was lunch on the fourth day when, for once there were some vegetables on offer (some sorry looking cauliflower). I had just taken my first mouthful of said cauliflower and was chewing when my wife, with a disgusted look on her face found a maggot in hers. Suffice to say a serviette was found very quickly for me and our meal time ended abruptly. For the rest of the holiday, all we ate was breakfast, chips and maybe a pizza for lunch, there was the option of pancakes and doughnuts about 3pm and in the evenings, we’d just get a cab into Monastir by the marina and eat out.

The hotel itself was kept fairly clean and the cleaners, especially the room cleaners were nice enough even though there was a language barrier. The hotel was literally less than 5 mins from the airport in a cab which is a good and bad thing. Aircraft noise wasn't terribly intrusive but you could definitely hear it. The entertainment staff were lively enough although they did try and sell you something at every opportunity (i.e hotel CD/jet-ski or banana boat ride etc). The bar staff were equally OK with a few friendly guys who gave you a smile every once in a while. The complete and utter letdown were the reception staff and management. Most could not speak English or only spoke it when it suited them. (I will say here that I always feel a bit ignorant when I go to a foreign country and demand they speak English but if you set yourself out as an international hotel, you should be able to speak at least one or two prime languages.)
It is no exaggeration to say that the reception staff were utterly useless. We saw countless arguments between reception staff and guests in our stay (German, French, Italian) with the guests leaving the desk with that look of abject exasperation on their faces. The whole setup had that feeling of 'when it's convenient to us' about it and we quickly learned that the hotel, as a whole, was only useful for a few things……..somewhere to sleep, have a drink (if you like beer) and to be fair, the beach and pools were nice enough although the room balconies surrounding the pool area do not get any sun all day.

Now call me old fashioned but it's nice to feel 'looked after' when you go on holiday, especially if you pay for an all-inclusive package. You will not get this at the Primasol Golden Beach. Also, it is predominantly designed to cater for Germans and therefore heavily populated by our Teutonic cousins. They're a unique bunch of people and the kindest thing that can be said is that they know what they want and are not embarrassed to get it and everyone else be damned. It's a shame because it's like a rat-race for food/sunbeds when you've paid a large amount of money to get away from the rat-race of everyday life!

To see German reviews of this hotel, go to altavista.com and then the babelfish translation link and use the webpage translation with the below address (copy and paste it) from German to English. It's not a perfect translation but you get the jist of people's feelings.

http://www.holidaycheck.com/hotel.php?ch=hb&hid=29453&sortID=3&sortDir=DESC&sprache=alle

To finish it all off, at the end of the holiday we had a evening flight. We discovered that check out was by mid-day on the day of departure and they had no left luggage/security room section in the hotel. Their actual advice was to sit around in reception with our cases until it was time to go. Our flight was at 10.30pm so it was either spend the day guarding our cases in reception or pay an extra 30 TD to keep the room until 6.30pm. We paid the 30 TD as there was no way we were going to sit there for 8 hours or leave our cases unattended!! Another cracking money making scam....

Take my advice, if you're looking for a hotel in Skanes, walk right past this one. We know friends that have stayed in the Sahara Beach hotel which is technically a 3 star (GB is supposed to be a 4 star) and appeared to be much more impressed with it than we were. We will be writing to lowcostbeds.com to complain and I'd seriously recommend they listen otherwise this place could do a lot to damage their reputation….

OK, enough of the hotel disaster…

What about Tunisia as a holiday destination? We really only got to see the Monastir marina, Sousse and PEK (and the journeys between) but it was certainly nice enough. It also has the advantage of being relatively cheap. The exchange rate for us was £1 = 2.5TD
The absolute saving grace for us was that we ate out every night and, all told, the evening only cost about £20 for both of us which included a cab there and back plus a nice, two course meal. Still, we HAD paid for All-Inclusive….
If you don't like getting hassled constantly then steer clear of towns as they're tourist traps. Watch out for the standard, old favourite cons like the boy in Sousse who comes up to you with little flowers, you take pity and give him a coin for one and then he runs after you a minute later, showing you a fake coin, claiming you've given it to him so trying to embarrass you into giving him another one. Another favourite was the guy who comes up to you with a big smile on his face, claiming to work in the kitchen at your hotel and that he recognised you and wanted to say hello. You let your guard down and thirty seconds later he's trying to hard-sell something to you, which is when the scam becomes obvious. The second time around, just simply ask "Oh yeah, which hotel is it?" does the trick.
Walking past any shop, you will inevitably have people trying to hassle you in. It's horrible but the best way to avoid being sucked in is to blank them despite their usual handshaking, won't let go "where are you from, what part come into my shop etc etc". Anyone who's ever been to Turkey will know what I mean……If you do go in a shop and want to buy something, never pay more than half of what they're asking for it! :)

As for Tunisians in general, have respect and courteousness for them but don't trust them as far as you can throw them as in my opinion, they see us 'Westerners' as a meal ticket. This might sound a bit harsh but it's their culture and will save you from being ripped off countless times.

AT THE AIRPORT: Also, another golden tip is, when you get to the airport on your way home, you will have any TD you have left, taken off you by the customs officials. I had a 10 TD note taken off me and the guy quite literally put it into his own pocket. Either spend it all before you get there or just say you don't have any and keep any notes in your pocket (they will check your wallet!). What annoyed me was, when you got the other side of customs, there were shops there that accepted TD for sandwiches. Credit cards were also accepted but with a minimum approx £10 spend (really annoying when all you want is a sandwich and a bottle of water!)

In summary, I think we'd go back to Tunisia because of the lovely weather and relative cheapness. However, we would NEVER go back to the Primasol Golden Beach.
