The location of the Corfu Imperial Grecotel hotel is superb and the views are some of the best on the island, however don't stay in one of the bungalows (room 51 and then 151).

This is a 5 star hotel and although the public areas, pool and location match this rating the bungalow accomodation leave a lot to be desired and only rated 3 star.

The bathrooms are old and in need of major refurbishment, the bedroom was sparse, the air conditioning so noisy that you had to turn it off over night. The storage for a room that is supposed to sleep 2 + 2 was a joke.

The good points are they let you put one or two items in the bar fridge without charge and the room safe is also free of charge.

Stayed at the Atlantica Imperial Rhodes 4 star last year and it knocks spots off this Grecotel.

This is the eight time we have stayed at this hotel. It does have something for everyone, but it does change atmosphere depending on the time of year.

The limited charter flights (May - October) dictate the season, May sees the hotel open after the winter, and to be fair it does take a while for all facilities to get going; like the beach bar and the outside evening entertainment.

July and August is family time, and such it is a bit more noisey, but the beach bar is open everyday, and several evenings. Evening entertainment is outside, with lots of tables situated around the pool, which look very lovely, and help provide the perfect evening.

In October, as the season winds down, so does the entertainment, the beach bar closes at 6pm, and the oustide entertainment stops - but does carry on inside.

Most activities centre around the pool and the three beaches, but the hotel has exclusive use of Maria (a typical greek boat, painted blue and white and reminiscent of the Shirley Valentine boat), which sails, either up the pretty North East coast to Kouloura or South to Benitses.

You could even get adventerous and hire your own boat from the neighbouring bay, which makes for a fabulous day out! A good selection of watersports (rings, banana, water-skiing, para-gliding, pedaloes) are also available from the hotel's own jetty.

The hotel is spoltless, the pool is cleaned every morning, the beaches swept tidy, bed linen, towels etc are all changed daily.

The restaurant, whilst fairly large still feels intimate, with spotless white tablecloths and cloth napkins at both breakfast and dinner. Food is plentiful and of a good quality; american style buffet breakfasts, and great dinners with probably the best creme caramel in the world!

All Grecotel staff are polite and friendly, and at this hotel they seem more so, nothing is too much trouble.

The hotel is situated on its' own peninsula, which does make it feel a bit remote (to us, this is it's appeal), but plans to link it to the Grecotel Daphnilla Bay, and the newly aquired Grecotel Eva Palace will give guests a little bit more scope for a stroll and or a slight change of scene.

We believe it well and truly deserves it 5 stars and its reputation as one of the best (if not the best) hotels on Corfu. So much so that Mikail Gorbachev and his entire family joined us this year!

We arrived at the hotel on 10 May 2002 having spent a week on the Emerald cruise ship. On reaching our room which was lovely and had a beautiful sea view we were disappointed to find that building work was going on in the hotel grounds directly beneath our room which was on 4th floor - they were renovating existing bungalows. Although we had a letter from the management on arrival stating that the building work was taking place but only between 9.30am and 14.30pm we found that this was not the case. It started at 8.00am every morning including Sunday and finished late afternoon/early evening. Lots of guests changed rooms to the other side of the hotel but we stayed put as we had already packed/unpacked following our week's cruise and didn't feel like doing it again! We put up with it and it wasn't too bad but we could have done without it especially when they lit a fire and the smell wafted into our room and along the corridor!

As far as the food in the hotel was concerned this was quite good, especially the hot and cold buffet, but the main course was a choice of two dishes only and was rather small in size. The choice of desserts were excellent but I could have done with some more fresh fruit as I didn't see a grape or a banana all week!

The hotel has excellent facilities but unfortunately the beach bar did not open all week and given that the temperature was in 80s every day and the beaches were packed they lost lots of customers.

The location of the hotel is superb but there are very few amenities in the surrounding area - no shops, just a couple of tavernas within walking distance but up a rather steep hill.

The hotel runs a courtesy bus into Corfu Town twice a day (10am returning at 13.00pm and 17.45pm returning at 20.30pm)but there are limited seats so it's first come, first served. You also have to get your bus ticket the day before you want to travel.

Overall the hotel is lovely but considering it is a 5 star deluxe it is not all that you would expect from a hotel of such class but the happy hour between 18.00pm and 19.00pm is great and very well used, especially for cocktails!
