I have just returned from 2 weeks in the aghios gordios gold hotel and was appalled at some of the comments. Were we holidaying in the same hotel and resort? Yes I agree there were a lot of steps and it was rather hilly but we already knew this as we read it in the brochure, as it happens there were some beautiful guided walks in the area where you could see just how picturesque this island is. As for the hotel and staff it was just as I have found every other Greek holiday I have been on warm and friendly people willing to do anything for you, yes it was a little smelly on the way down to the beach but we were aware of this as their sewerage system is not as good as our own but then we do not travel to other countries to expect the same as our own!!!!! The entertainment was a bit drab but we took advantage of the small tavernas and bars in the village, what a lovely place small traditional not commercial!!!!!! We asked around ourselves with regards to booking the hotel for next year. The hotel will be in the Thomson sun brochure and we will be booking our holiday for June 2008 thank you for a lovely holiday

WE arrived later than expected at the hotel but as our room was not ready we went to the pool bar for a drink. This was the first and last drink we bought at the hotel.Talk abbout expensive !!We had already paid over the odds for a Gold holiday, only to be robbed at the hotel !!! I don't know why T.G. think they can get away with this, we weren't the only ones clinking up the 46 steps back to the hotel with drinks that cost less than a quarter of the hotel price from the supermarket. The room was ok, we paid for a supeior room to make sure we got a view, as many of the lower floor rooms did not and were also next to or above leaking sewer pipes, the stink was unbelievable and must have been a health hazard. There were not enough coathangers, only 10 between 2 of us and no where near enough drawer space, we left things like underwear in the suitcase, we had bathrobes but no where to hang them. WE couldn't understand why we both got bit so much on the first night out, you won't be able to stick the so called entertainment as we both had long trousers and long sleeved tops on, then it dawned on us...... we were both bitten on the side we slept on, my husband all down his back and myself all down the right hand side !!!We weren't the only ones using the room, we had BEDBUGS or FLEAS !!!! WE decided it wasn't worth changing rooms as several other couples at breakfast had the same problem so each day we totally stripped the bed and sprayed it with everything we'd got.You have been warned. The food was ok.Just ok, not up to T.G. standard and then we were told that after oct 07 this hotel is no longer part of Thomson Gold and boy does it show !! Its shabby, past its use by date and needs some money spending on it,,,, fast . THe 46 steps to the beach would be ok if you didn't have to risk your life on the un lit path with only one hand rail to hold on to, holding your nose with your other hand as the stench from the broken or leaking sewer pipes is gut renching, not helped by the fact that the gardener relieves himself up against the trees !! Yes really !!! There are plenty of sun beds but the sun doesn't get onto the terraces much before 11am but that doesn't stop the sun bed baggers !! How we laughed out loud at one couple who bagged their beds at 9.15 every day and sat one them whilst the staff swept and hosed around them !!! They sat in the shade all day, every day whilst we were there, it would have been cheaper to stay at home and buy a sun lamp !!! There are alot of steps round the hotel both inside and out, on two occasions we helped people down the steps to the lift with their bags as there were no staff around, and this is a Gold hotel ??? The entertainment was rubbish, some people will watch anything, we went out most night to the village, along the board walk, this is not well built and uneven in places, not very well lit and down right dangerous in a couple of places, a lady was saw had a vert nasty fall, cutting her nose and fore head quite badly. This is by far the worst Thomson Gold hotel we have stopped in, the rep said we shouldn't have expected the same standard in Greece as else where, we just expected the same Gold standard as other hotels but we didn't get it. This is not a 3 or 4 star hotel, barely a 2 star. If you have booked this hotel and Thomsons get in touch and give you the chance to cancel or change your booking DO IT !!!

we stayed at the thomson gold aghios gordios in corfu from 24th august for two weeks. we had previously stayed at this hotel before and booked a late holiday due to our original destination of mexico having been cancelled due to a hurricane. having read mixed reports from various sites we went with an open mind with the knowledge of our previous visit being fine.
the resort is in a fantastic location but not if you don't like hills as they are unavoidable, we like to walk so no real problem. the views are great & locals very friendly. The pool area is ideal & yuo do not have to get your towels out early as there are plenty of sun beds. one big down point is we were plagued by wasps for the whole two weeks with many people getting stung. this definately was a down side at times but we still managed to relax & have fun around the pool with mandy & natalie whom worked endlessly to keep us entertained with various games. food was not upto normal "gold" standard having been to many before & became vary boring after two weeks expecially breakfast! the hotel is vary dated & looks tired, beds are like rock, pillows give you neck ache & aircon is very noisy. evening entertainment from the resident band was poor & very few people watched them, however the resident team consisting of two girls & two lads were fantastic & would not be out of place in the westend of london! staff were slow to serve you and if you failed to tip after each round of drinks tried to avoid you & were rude on occasions.
overall nice relaxing time but this is not what you expect from gold so be warned if you are use to the usual gols standards, you will be dissapointed.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we thought we were on top of a mountain as the hotel is situated right at the top of a long winding road. After dropping off our luggage we decided to walk down the hill into the village and wondered how on earth we were going to manage to get back up! well a very nice shopkeeper told us a short cut and it brought us to the bottom of the steps up to the hotel.(there are only 35 )but the day after we found out if you walked along the boardwalk it was even easier to get to the small village, about 15 mins.
The hotel was really very nice. After reading previous reports we wondered why some people did not like the hotel or the food. The food was actually very good. The chef was always out testing the food with her thermometer to make sure that it was hot. There was always plenty to choose from and always at least 2 local dishes on the menu as well as everything else that was on offer.Plenty to choose from the salad bar and always plenty of choice in desserts.( one night there was over 16 different desserts from cakes ,mousses, trifles, baclava(local dessert and also desserts for vegetarians. With us staying there for 2 weeks we were entitled to 2 a la carte meals in the seperate restaurant which was equally as nice.
The staff were really friendly especially our waitress in the restaurant( Alexandria ) Also full marks to the entertainment staff especially Mandy and Becky. They worked really hard.

My mother and I went to the Aghios Gordios hotel in September 2006. We stayed here on a half board basis but on many ocassions found ourselves eating out. The food was more or less the same every night and quite tasteless. The breakfast being the worst meal of the day as this was the same everyday. The waiters and waitreses were helpful and friendly although this depending on what end of the restaurant you sat in.

Hotel cleanliness was ok, our rooms were cleaned everyday although I am unsure as to how often the sheets and towels were changed.

The location of the hotel is pretty poor and you have to be reasonably fit to climb the many stairs and the steep hills, not good for elderly people.

The daily and evening entertainment was awful. The same band coming on stage every night twice a night and this not ending until gone 11:00 at night. The hotel is definately not aimed at younger people (although the brochure states 16+ I was the youngest person there at the age of 22)!!! I found the Thomson staff to be quite rude and unhelpful also and the trips offered very poor. Mainly aimed at couples and older people. They didn't seem to want to help at all.

I wouldn't go to this resort or this hotel again.

Hotel rooms and communal areas were quite clean but the general condition of this hotel is very poor. There was a problem with a cable feeding the main distribution board which resulted in a power failure for 10 hours, during this time the emergency lighting even in daylight hours was inadequate, most of the corridors you could not see to put your key in to open the door.

When darkness came they had failed entirely. We were unable to access our rooms because no light was provided and unable to choose food in the restaurant because the only light provided was some tealights on each table.

The general fabric of the building is well worn and does not deserve 4 stars.

The food is of a poor quality and standard, the staff do the best they can with the ingredients they are given. The staff are very polite and very efficient it is a pity the food can not reach the same high standard.

I would definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone that is not 100% fit as there are a lot of steps to negotiate because the lifts do not reach all levels. You cannot access the pool area without descending and again climbing on your return 3 flights of steps which are very slippery when wet, a man had a serious fall while we were there and had to have his ankle put in plaster.

To walk to the village or beach would be very difficult for some people.

Most of the staff were polite and friendly but the staff on reception were rude and officious.

The entertainment during the day and in the evening seemed to please most people, the Thomson animation staff worked hard to amuse everybody.

The first thing we noticed about the hotel is that the brochure photographs and descriptions do it less than justice. Put simply, it is stunning. Yes, the design is dated, but it is well maintained and very clean.

The food was all that you can expect of a four star hotel, with a wide variety of local, international and British dishes, including vegetarian options. There was a short description of each dish, colour coded to show whether it was local, international, chef's special or veggie. The catering staff were friendly and willing to answer questions - most spoke good English, and love it when we tried to speak Greek to them (leading to much laughter)!

Our room was spacious and well appointed with a wonderful sea view. The air conditioning in the room was more than adequate, and can be left on when you are not in - and even when the balcony door is open! That meant we had no mozzies in the room at all.

The pool was fabulous. More than enough sun-loungers, with a sensible restriction on reserving them for hours and then not turning up. It was great to have no arguments at all at pool-side.

The reception staff were friendly and informative, and unlike in many hotels they are approachable at all times. Being Thompson Gold, the rep service is excellent.

You can walk to the village a half-mile or so away by road, or go down to the beach and use the board walk, thus avoiding traffic.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone who is prepared for the steps to the beach.

We stayed in this hotel for the second week of our 2 week holiday.

The location is fabulous, we had a garden room (M)& the view was fantastic. Tthe slight hill meant you had to remember everything for the pool area though!!

The only drawback for these rooms is the lack of tea/coffee making facilities but otherwise they are ideal as they are quiet & peaceful so that if you want a drink on your balcony it was perfect (a good size fridge was supplied in our room). The food was okay but the A La Carte restaurant was lovely.

The staff were helpful & the Thomson reps were great (very friendly & very entertaining) The entertainment was also very good, something for everyone. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. The beach walk is superb (& good excercise once you get down all those steps) My perfect holiday.

When I read some of the reviews for this hotel I thought my god, what are we going to. I was pleasantly surprised, the food was first class, well cooked and presented.

The staff were friendly and respectful to the guests. Rooms were clean with 2 double beds. There was a hair drier in the drawer which meant you could use it anywhere.

The thomson gold staff put on a great show every night and were always pleasant. There were plenty sun beds if you wanted one.

To anyone going, it is a 20 min walk to the village by the road and is not suitable for persons with difficulty walking.

Even going by the beach might present a problem as there are stairs to get down first. Every room in ths hotel has a sea view.

We were on level 2 and we had a good lookout on to the beach.

All in we had a lovely time at the Agois Gordios.

Excellent location, but lots of steps down to the beach.

Pleasant pool area more than enough sun beds, as with all Thomson Gold hotels towels for the pool and beach are supplied for a small refundable fee.

Good food, as much as you can eat, a-la-carte eating once a week in a separate restaurant Al fresco for all meals if you choose to do so.

The only hiccup for us was on two consecutive Mondays there was no hot water for an early morning shower.

Entertainment was good, ex television stars flown out from the U.K.

Having been to other Gold hotels we decided to give it a try, even though we didn't fancy the hills much.

We found the food not up to expectations, drinks at the bar were expensive. So we went out found a nice bar, Stevens. on the hill, great staff made us very welcome.

We paid extra for a superior room and all we got was a kettle fruit & bathrobes which you don't really need in 90 degree heat. Found the trips from hotel expensive.

Beach & sea lovely.

Views from room excellent.

Demetrius sees to your needs on the beach 9 euros a day for two beds & an umbrella.

Wouldn't advise taking teenagers as there's no bars with music, very little choice.

Will not return again, as we came back dissapointed.

Had reservations about former reports but had been informed that the hotel had been tidied up alot so decided to give it a go. We were the first group of the new season and were greated by the "Aghios Gordios Hotel sign" only half lit (initial impression lack of attention to detail poor) Hotel staff and reps excellent. Food plenty of choice but often over cooked but overall no real gripes there. Rooms were a little damp smelling and we requested new pillows as the smell was bad. This was carried out with no bother. Our teenage daughters tried to phone us twice as arranged and got throgh to the reception but not our rooms. After some investigation it turned out the phone was not plugged in .Things like this cause unwanted stress when you should be relaxing. Fair play to the hotel management, we received a bottle of wine and basket of fruit as an apology.
The views from the hotel are stunning. Drinks are expensive and suggest a visit to the mad greek taverna! Sharon & Mike are great & well worth a visit.
Don't use the hotel bus it cost 12 euro return to Corfu town! Bus stop next to "Georges Gee Bees shop" only cost 3 euro each and good service. Overall opinion was we really enjoyed it. Excellent entertainment, very hilly and not for those with trouble walking . Lovely friedly people and a beautiful island . Give a go and enjoy whats on offer.
Would suggest also if you are there for two weeks, get a hire car, crazy drivers but the experience of seeing the true Corfu cannot be missed. In our last week the numbers rose and the pool side area became very busy so don't be disapointed if you miss out on the sun beds, the beach is nice. My advice is don't go out to pick faults with the hotel, it is old and slightly unkept in places but go and enjoy and unwind because you can here! i'm really glad we went.Well done Jenny and here team you were great!!!!

The Hotel Agios Gordios had only been open for two days before we arrived,so after we had changed the "musty" smelling bedding it was very good. The room had been newly decorated and was very clean, fantastic views from the sea facing balcony.Food was very good and as much as you liked.Pool bar expensive and only plastic glasses, better off at one of the taverners along the beach.Evening entertainment excellent and the Reps. work really hard all day, great girls. They are not kidding in the brochure when they say on a steep hill, this is both at the front of the hotel and the beach access,so be warned! We took it slowly with plenty of stops at the different Taverners along the way.Bar staff friendly and hard working.

Well, we have just returned (4 of us aged between 47 - 53) on 20th September 2002 from a two-week stay at this hotel and resort booked through Thomson Gold. Our full review is below but a shorter summary follows:

Summary
The Agios Gordios Hotel is certainly not 4T or 'A' class. We would rate it at 2/3T at best.
The facilities are average and the rooms OK. Do not upgrade to a superior room, as you will not benefit very much from the extra cost. They will simply put a kettle in the room and provide a sachet of coffee and a tea bag on arrival. After that you will need to provide your own tea and coffee. You will also have dressing gowns to use!! Take a travel kettle instead and ask for cups to be placed in the room as we did.

The food at breakfast was OK but at dinner we found it below par and very similar each evening. Some of the food selection was made from processed chicken and turkey and not very palatable. Also the temperature of the food varied because the "bain-marie" (buffet counter) was not filled with water and heated - we presume to save costs. Soup selection was good but once again it seemed the soup cauldrons were not switched on so it wasn't always hot. The Thomson rep reckoned this was because the Greeks don’t like their food hot!!! Eh?

The A la Carte evenings, well they simply aren't. These are held in a small eating area next to the pool bar, the staff were friendly enough but the food certainly wasn't A la Carte.

Prices for drinks and snacks were very high and unless you are very rich or like to be ripped off, try eating out at lunchtime and drinking out in the evening. Having said that a bottle of red or white wine in the restaurant in the evening was € 9, which we thought reasonable. Select your evening entertainment nights in the hotel carefully otherwise you could end up 'comatose' in the evening like many of the 'inmates'. During September and October the clientele are substantially older - mainly retired folks. July and August will probably have younger to middle aged couples in residence judging from comments we heard. Having said that we met some very nice people - and some not so nice with few manners.

If you make a complaint to either the Thomson reps or the hotel receptionists, expect to be shunned for the rest of your holiday!!! One receptionist in particular simply laughed behind my back when I reported the hand dryer in the gents wasn't working. Generally the Thomson Gold team did a good job, especially the local interest rep Sue who knew her job and the Corfu culture and traditions well.

Many areas of the hotel are run down and show a lack of maintenance and we suspect it will not be too long before Thomson drops this hotel from the Gold brochure. Many people we spoke to had complaints. The beach and sea are first class. There are lots of steps so the hotel is NOT suitable for wheel chairs or the infirm. You need to be reasonably fit to stay here.

If you decide to book this hotel, then don't build up your expectations too much and you will probably enjoy it. Oh, one final thing, there is a dog that roams around the pool area. It had puppies with it while we were there. If we ever visit Ag Gordios resort again we would book into Steven's on the Hill.

Az, Lynn, Sally and Ian.

Here is our full review:
We arrived on the evening of the 6th Sept around 10pm. The journey from the airport took only around 30 minutes with a guaranteed first drop. After checking in (quite efficient) and having missed the evening meal we were given a sandwich and a drink (tea or coffee) neither of which inspired us with confidence about the 4T rating. The drink wasn't offered, we had to request one - even though the brochure says we would be given one. The lounge area adjacent to reception was rather drab and reminded us of a social club style of the 70's. The seats, although reasonably comfortable, would not have looked out of place in an old folks home. No offence to old people.

We took our luggage to our rooms (porter service available if required), which were at a lower level of the hotel (A block). Our special request of an upper floor made at the time of the booking had apparently been ignored. During our stay there was the odd drain/sewer small wafting into the room. The hotel sess pit appeared to be somewhere near this block.

The lifts are rather ancient and badly designed (landing door that opens out and two inner doors that open in) which made it difficult to put cases and people in at the same time. An octopus could manage this quite easy. They only carried 3 people max anyway.

However the bedrooms and bathrooms were of a reasonable standard and included all the facilities described in the Thomson brochure. The fridge however was tucked into a cupboard and the heat inside made the operation of the fridge rather inefficient and we had to leave the cupboard door open most of the time. This was inconvenient as it restricted access to the main door and bathroom. It would be better if they just removed the cupboard doors altogether - even though the fridges are brown and the units white!!!

The rooms by the way are carpeted, not the most hygienic of ways these days. All rooms in the hotel have a sea view and balcony and air conditioning, but some lower rooms have a restricted view due to pine trees and shrubs. There is also a selection of bungalows outside of the main hotel area. These are in a hilly part of the complex.

We decided to explore the hotel and made our way to the roof terrace where we found the Thomson Gold resident band playing. They sounded ok. Drinks, as we were aware from other reviews, were expensive. A beer (0.4L) was € 3.5 (about £2.20). A G&T was € 7.5 (about £4.70) and a small cocktail with not much alcohol € 4.0 (about £2.55). A glass of wine was about £2.00.

The band finishes at 12.00 midnight every evening so we made our way back to the rooms for a well earned rest.

Breakfast is served between 6.30am and 10.00am in the main dining room below the lounge. On our first morning we made our way there about 9.00am, you have to wait for the headwaiter to allocate you a table when it is busy. If you arrive early enough you can choose your own seat. It also applies in the evening for dinner where there are two sittings.

Breakfast choice was quite good and included everything from doughnuts, croissants, cereals and also fruit to a full English breakfast. The quality of the cooked foods was not the same as you would receive back home but was acceptable. Bacon (ham), fried eggs or sometimes poached, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, etc. A couple of mornings each week there is a chef cooking omelets and pancakes in the dining room. Generally the breakfasts on the whole were OK but not 4T. By the end of the first week we had become tired of the food. Gentlemen need to wear trousers for dinner.

Seeing the hotel in the daylight for the first time was rather disappointing. Built around 25 years ago it was definitely showing it's age. Being built into the cliff face there are understandably many steps to negotiate to most areas of the hotel. This is clearly explained in the brochure and we did not have a problem with this. However it would not be suitable for those in a wheel chair or with walking difficulties.

The pool area at first appeared nice but closer inspection revealed neglect in many areas. There is a poolside bar and snack area (expensive) and a "games room" and "sauna". The latter two areas have to be seen to be believed. I've got the video :-). For a 4T hotel they are unacceptable. I don't think the sauna worked. The pool is nice but not heated so it is colder than the sea. The sun does not reach all areas of the pool until late afternoon so claim your sun beds as soon as you can. The first ones to catch the sun are near the balustrade opposite from the bar. The ones near the cliff face overlooking the pool only catch the sun later in the day. The pool area is supported on concrete pillars and from the beach it looks unkempt. There was an accumulation of broken chairs, tables and brolleys scattered under this area.

From the pool area there are steps leading to the beach. The beach and sea are absolutely superb and probably the best we have seen in many years. The gently sloping sands in front of the hotel meant you could wade out a considerable distant - ideal for non-swimmers and children. There are a number of rocky features in the sea which were great for snorkeling - lots of fish to see. The beach was well kept and litterbins and showers provided at regular intervals. Two beds a brolly and table would cost you € 9 a day in front of the hotel. The northern end of the beach, well away from the hotel, was not so good.

The beach 'promenade' consisted of wooden pallets and was rather rickety and dangerous in places - nails sticking up and broken planks etc. Be careful when walking this route, especially in the evening when the lighting is not good. There are some sandy stretches to navigate as well. The lower door to the hotel from the beach is closed at 11.30pm, so if you are not back this route before then you need to come in via the main entrance, which is a steep climb through the village. Not as bad as we first thought it would be from previous reports, once you know the short cuts.

Pedalos, canoes and boats could be hired from the centre of the beach.

Thomson Gold Entertainment
During the day various silly games were played in the games room and around the pool - bean bag boules, target golf, table tennis, killer darts. The prizes were appalling, from a Thomson Gold poloshirt(XL only), very thin and poor quality; to a bottle of bubbly, which we found out, was € 1.20 in the local supermarket. It tasted foul as well. Although it was the taking part and not the winning which was the name of the game!!! You could even have a game of bingo if you fancied.

There was entertainment every night in the hotel lounge area, which had a stage. This is usually held outdoors on the roof terrace during May to September but because there had been some rain on the first Saturday we got there it was brought into the lounge and never taken back out. The roof terrace was then closed for the rest of our holiday (13 days) even though the weather was fine. The lounge area was hot and stuffy and they did not use the air conditioning in here – they opened the windows instead!!!

The entertainment varied from professional acts flown in from the UK (usually excellent to not to bad) to the Gold Team Reps doing various routines, some good, some not so good.

When we booked, there was supposed to be a Gala Evening once a week. This turned out to be untrue. It consisted of the waiters and waitresses just dressing up in Greek costume while serving you. At one point the music became louder and they all danced round the buffet counter for a few moments, then continued serving the tables!!! We were also told in the brochure that a lunch voucher would be given on these gala days – nothing was forthcoming.

Thomson Trips
There is a choice of trips and we only went on one. Theo’s Boat Trip and BBQ. This was excellent and a good day out. Cost is around £22 per person; the coach takes you from the hotel to the boat, which sails from north of Corfu town. Once the boat sails Captain Theo gets up to his tricks with the women – so beware of the Scotsman’s disguise!!! We made a leisurely trip along the coast for an hour, passing various resorts and landmarks, before dropping anchor at a private beach. The captain and crew prepare the BBQ on the beach while you have time for some sunbathing and swimming. Chicken, pork and salad, plus wine and bread were the main ingredients. Watermelon followed for dessert. After the BBQ we sailed further north to Kassiopi for an hour stop. This is a nice resort with a nice selection of bars and shops. This trip is certainly recommended. Be prepared to get wet on the way back!!! Only drawback was the number of wasps on the beach.

Complaints
After our first week we had a number of complaints and concerns, which we reported to the rep. After complaining we found the attitude of the reps towards us changed. Some of them became unfriendly and not interested in us. One receptionist in particular simply laughed behind my back when I reported the hand dryer in the gents wasn't working. We are taking up these complaints through the usual channels.

The Resort
The resort has one main street plus the beachfront. There is a good choice of restaurants and bars, but no discos or clubs. However one or two do play louder music if that is what you require. Football fans were reasonably well catered for at some bars with matches shown on large screen TV.

Quality gift shops were limited in the resort and a visit to Corfu town is essential for keen shoppers. Only € 1.20 on the local 'green' bus or € 6.00 through Thomson’s and the hotel bus.

Cash Point
The resort does now have a cash dispenser, which can be found at the travel agents, half way down the main street on the left.

Restaurants and Bars
During our stay we visited quite a few of the restaurants and bars in the resort and here are a few recommendations:

Steven's on the Hill (Tel. 06610 53301)
As with many other reviews on this site this has to be top of our list. Drinks are cheaper than the hotel and the food is fantastic. The fillet steaks were superb. Try the BBQ nite on Saturdays and the Greek entertainment nite on Tues and Thurs. You don't have to eat to drink. The staff are very pleasant and you will find many people from the Ag Gordios hotel end up here because of the prices and quality of food and it's just 5 mins down the road from the hotel main entrance. Facilities include large screen TV and pool table. The decor and surroundings are first class. The toilets have automatic urinal flushers and auto taps - just place your hands under the tap and it turns on itself. The Ag Gordios management should take a leaf out of Steven's book. Steven's on the Hill also have accommodation to rent (www.stevens.gr).

Sea Breeze
With it’s own apartments and pool this bar restaurant is nicely placed on the beachfront and provides good value for money. The food is nicely presented and of good quality and quantity, the staff are friendly - well worth a visit.

Thalassa (Tel. 06610 53950)
This bar restaurant is on the beach next door to the Sea Breeze. It is clean and the staff friendly. Prices are good and the food excellent and good value. A full carafe of dry white wine was only €6.00 and it tasted good. They have the cleanest toilets of all the places we ate/drank at during our stay and were as good as Steven's on the Hill but without the automation.

Nikkis
This little garden restaurant is just off the main resort street on the right going down to the beach. It has the cheapest drinks at €1.80 for a large beer. Food quality was average.

Tobys
Just past Steven’s on the Hill and next door to the ‘Mad Greeks’ this place did a nice selection of sandwiches and drinks prices were reasonable.

Many others were also tried but we can’t remember all the names.

Car Hire
Don't use the Thomson car hire, it is expensive. We used Rolandos (06610 53520) (www.otenet.gr/rolandos) at the bottom of the road from the hotel. Much cheaper (from € 84 for 3 days) and full insurance, CDW and unlimited mileage included. Hire a jeep and explore the island, we did and had a great time. Some of the roads can be difficult especially through small villages and over the mountains (steep drops) - experienced drivers only should take to the roads in many areas. Some of the bars in remote areas where there is little competition will be happy to rip you off so check prices first before ordering any food or drinks. We were ripped off at the Aloha bar in Glyfada.

My husband and I went to the Aghios Gordios for a week in August 2002. We are both in our late 30's but found the hotel atmoshere and entertainment more suited to the over 45's. The room was great but the hotel overall was a bit shabby. The food was average but the music played was awful - tapes must have been about 20 years out of date!!! Drinks were very pricey so we stayed sober for most of the week . The views are magnificent - try and get a table by the window for evening meal and watch the sunset - amazing !!
Overall I would say this holiday was good but not brilliant. The steps were a bit of a pain but not as bad as expected.

Arrived late Friday evening after pretty hairy coach ride from airport. First impression of hotel very good - room excellent, twin beds, armchairs, carpet, air-con etc. Unpacked and went down to lounge bar for gin&tonic nightcap - first shock of the holiday - 2 not very strong G&T's: 13 Euros!!!!! Greece used to be cheap - no longer - prices at least as much as UK and normally more. Apart from prices, hotel is very good - Thomson staff very helpful, fantastic food, always lots to do if you want to, evening entertainment variable but mostly very good.

Resort is OK - one main street with usual selection of cafes, supermarkets and tourist tat-shops.

Beach is superb - sand all the way, and the water more like a lake than the sea. Lots of tavernas at the back of the beach - drinks etc much cheaper and more generous than hotel.

Good trips on offer from Thomson - we went on the Island Tour and evening shopping in Corfu town - both good value.

The brochure says 'not suitable if you have mobility problems' - TOO BLOOMIN RIGHT!! You can access the beach from the hotel via fairly steep steps (lots of them) but this entrance is locked at 11pm every night. Too long at the beach bars and you are faced with a walk along the beach, back up through the village and the up and down some killing hills to the hotel main entrance. A strong incentive to get home early!!

To sum up, this was a superb two weeks, only partly spoiled by the cost of drinks etc particularly in the hotel. We both said we would like to repeat but we'll see how the money goes.
