Having spent a week in the Maldives we wanted a hotel close to the airport and this hotel was suggested by the call centre at Hayes & Jarvis. I always read hotel reviews but this was not open when we booked as undergoing a major refit. The girl at H&J had just returned from an educational in Sri Lanka and said it would be lovely once complete.

It was very nice, our room had a large bathroom, very oddly it was built with glass walls and blinds could be closed for privacy? The bath was huge and large walk in shower. The rooms have TV with DVD/CD player and you can borrow films.

The pool was large and warm and we never had a problem finding a beach bed. Beach sellers were ok and did take no for an answer. We bought a wood tuk tuk car for our son and my husband haggled 2/3's off the price.

The hotel has other guests which we loved, the delightful chipmunks. They were everywhere. If you left the room door open they were in! I know some people so not like animals but we fell in love with these little creatures. I apologise to all other guests, I know some got fed up with us feeding them. We could have 6 or more sat with us all day on the beach as we took bread from the dining room. The chipmunks just sat on our beds all day feeding. This was fine and harmless you might think but it was the birds who followed who caused the problem. They tried to pinch the bread and made horrible noise. We did also give the birds some food as all animals but they were a pain. If I could I would have brought those chipmunks home.

The hotel arranged for us to have a private driver and we went to the elephant orphanage. 2 hour drive but worth it. The car/driver cost £45, not bad at all. You can also arrange to go and stay out over night in Kandy and that was a reasonable price. Much better than a tour.

The food in the hotel was good, better than we expected. Dinner was a la carte and high quality. Lunch was a more limited menu, but fine. The hotel also has a fine dining restaurant and that too was good apart from the night we went, we were the only guests. We booked half board and I would only suggest BB. The dinner was the same price booked either in the UK or hotel, when we ate in the fine dining they only deducted 20% so we actually lost out. For 4 nights we ate 3 lunches and all our drinks, mini bar, phone calls and internet and it cost £155. Not bad at all as the wine had been $8 glass and I had 4 per day. The beer was much cheaper $2 and large bottle.

The staff were very good and could not do enough for you, I worried about what our child would eat, the kids menu was one of the best I have seen and the restaurant manager George was so helpful. He told us all if you do not like the menu we will try make something you will eat. No one goes hungry. We never had to ask for anything as the choices were fine.

The standards are high here and whether you are looking for a few nights or a longer stay we would recommend this hotel.

Be prepaid for the chaos of the airport, never in all our travels have we experienced anything like it. Made worse that it was 1am our taxi driver picked a fight with another driver and left us at the wrong side of the road and we were unable to cross due to the traffic and the amount of people around you could not move, also police with guns all led to a crazy experience, it was fine after checked in. We laugh now but my poor 8 year son got hit several times with trolleys etc and had a sore ankle, he burst into tears at one point!
