We stayed in Lyda Horizons for two weeks in total.

Our room was in the new block so I don't really know what the old block was like.

We were staying in a studio, it was basic but clean and had everything that we needed. Air conditioning and safe rental costs about 60 euro for two weeks and you also have to pay 100 euro deposit.

The views from the hotel were amazing. Pool area was very good, there were always free sun loungers.

The location is very good as you can walk to the centre of Stalis within 10 minutes and to get to Hersonissos it costs only 7 euro in a taxi.

There is a small supermarket within the complex but is extremely overpriced, however, there is a supermarket about 5 minutes away by foot if you turn right when coming out of the hotel grounds.

Would not recommend this hotel for families as you do usually get woken up by people coming in from a night out but we didn't find this too disturbing as it was just the noise of people coming in and going up the stairs and after that there wasn't really anymore noise as they go to sleep straight away.

There have been a number of reports bout the hotel and the staff and I think they do a reasonable job considering the verbal abuse they get and the rowdy element who think that singing and making noise all night is their right and indulge in "antics" around the pool long after it is closed. Anyone who wants a decent nights sleep should notbook after the 1st week in July.
As for the hotel wringin the last penny out of guests.
I blame budget travel who screw the hotel on price "to be the cheapest" and the only way the hotel can make a return on each guest is to charge for all the extra's €15 per night is outrageous when other apartments on Crete will only charge €3.00 per night

Me and my girlfriend, arrived on the 30th of June for a week's stay. When we arrived we were met by the old geezer at reception, who was a bit stand offish and we were asked to pay 100 euro. though this is pretty standard i still thought it was a bit steep, but this and a funny tasting cup of tea from the snack bar are my only two complaints on the actual hotel itself.

The rooms although a bit cramped, did the job, and were cleaned reguarly.

The pool area always had lots of room and had great views of the sea, but most days we opted to go down by the jetty for even better ones.

For food and Entertainment .Your safer going to stalis or the other surrounding towns, as its nicer and cheaper with more variety.

there was a good mix of your standard leaving cert people, couples and families. though at times there was noise late at night it died down after the first few days.

overall this hotel is good for sleeping and sunbathing, and for the views alone i would come back.

Travelled to Stalis for our fourth time this year but first time to bring the kids. Opted for Lyda Horizon because Budget Travel assured me it was Child Friendly. It was Child Friendly but also post-leaving cert friendly which led to quite a few sleepless nights. Rooms were small and very basic but clean.

Food in the snack bar was fine but expensive when compared to the rest of Stalis. Definitely better value to eat out as there as some fantastic restaurants in Stalis and it is only a 15 minute walk from the hotel. Also note that if you have children you will be plagued every half hour for €2 to play on one of the two pool tables and also €2 for 30 minutes on the computer in reception which was very popular with the kids especially as they make friends and want to play with other children.

I would stay here again but only for the views and the fact that the pool was great for the kids. For a couples holiday i would stay in Stalis resort.

On arriving to the Lyda Horizon we were greeted by a grumpy ignorant rude man. We were not welcomed but were told to hand over passports and our deposits. All of our rooms got mixed up and we were not in rooms with the people we were supposed to be with. When we tried to explain this to the man at reception he simply wouldnt listen and told us in order to switch the rooms we would have to pay an extra €60 each. After this "lovely" welcome we were given a room number and were left to haul our luggage around in order to find the room ourslves.

The rooms are very basic but practical. You cannot flush the toliet paper down the loo so you must put it in the bin next to the toliet, which in the heat really stunk the room out.

The three staff at the pool bar are great. They really make you feel welcome and you can have a great laugh with them. The food at the pool bar is nice and comes at a reasonable price.

There is a shop in the reception area but try to avoid it as it is extremely over priced and the people at reception would barely thank you for your custome.

The views at the resort are breath taking. There is a beautiful view of the ocean and of Stalis beach.

Be very careful of getting your deposit back. On our day of departure we went to reception to retrieve our deposit and were told we were only getting half of it back. Apparently we were 'playing with fire extinguishers and broke one'. This being completely false.

If you are looking for a resort with beautiful surroundings this is the place. If you are looking for a resort with a welcoming atmosphere, courtious behaviour and owners with common manners avoid this place like the plague.

I would not recommend this resort to anyone who wishes to be treated with respect by management.

As with all accomadation in greece these apts. are basic,we stayed in the new block and found them clean and adequate for a family of 4 (cannot comment on old block aswe were in the new ones). The reception ,bar ,snack bar and pool area are wonderful with amazing views of the bay of Stalis. The snack was good value with a daily special 3 course menu for €5 ,the snacks weren't expensive and we ate there for lunch if we stayed at the pool ( try the baileys milkshake).
There is a small walk way down to the rocks below the apts which has a wooden jetty into the sea the kids had great fun jumping off this as did most of the adults!
The pool area is huge and didn't once have to get up early to secure a sun bed! (beware though the area around the pool gets extremely hot and a couple of people did burn their feet trying to walk on it).
There is a small room which passes as a shop ,to be honest we only bought milk there if we were stuck and the danish pastries for breakfast as it was expensive, but if you walk right at the entrance to apts about 5 minutes walk in the middle of no where is a cheap super market and they do home made rhaki and olive oil.
We found the staff excellent very friendly and efficient.Unfortunately there is no entertainment here only a Karioke night and a film night ,none whats so ever in the day,but what I am about to tell you now might explain why.!?!?
Firstly let me say we did have a good holiday ,but these apts are NOT suitable for a family or couple looking for a relaxing holiday, unfortunately (and may I add much to the staffs dismay aswell) budget travel tend to fill these apts with young people(16-18 yrs) who just want to party which is ok if you want that sort of thing but people passed out on the paths as you walk down to get milk in a morning( and it wasn't that early 11.30am) isn't the sort of thing I want my kids to see!Six apts were evicted while we there and I lost count at the number of times I had to ask people to keep the noise down to a dull roar,we did find it was the kids that were the most trouble( I'm talking 16-18 yrs)the young adults were fine 18+ as they partied in the resorts and if they come back for a drink they had the respect to try to keep the noise down.I don't want to come across as a party pooper we normally didn't get back till the small hours our selves ,but when an ash tray vibrates its way off the table I think the music is a touch too loud!especially as it was 5.30am!!!!!!!!!!
If you're 16-25 single and looking for a wild holiday these apts are ideal ,perfect spot with great views, cheap food and booze with easy access to malia or hersonissis(€6 in a taxi), if you're a family or couple looking for anything else avoid these apts like the plague!!!

Just back from 2 weeks in these apartments and overall we had a very good holiday and met some very nice people staying there ,
on our arrival we where extremely tired after enduring a five and half delay on our flight and got there at 1130hrs local time , check in was painless even the handing over of the 100€ despoit for breakages etc and we where given easy directions to same ,
the only criticism of the room is there is very limited wardrobe space for 3 people's clothes and kettles are not standard more about that later,I still fail to see the need for the €100 despoit as i could not find anything in the room to the value of €100 to Break or damage! on arrival back to reception we then took in the view which overlooks the sea and across to stalis and it is breathtaking ,
snack bar is quite extensive in its menu but is also quite expensive , the snack bar provides the only entertainment which is karoke on a wednesday night and the second wednesday of our holidays it was a great night . The upstairs bar is normally more quiet than the downstairs bar, special mention must go to the two regular bar men , the two Giorgis , both who are great crack and Giorgis in particular in the upstairs bar who is always ready for a joke and laugh, the airconditioning for two weeks is 135€ and lucky for us we were on the 1st floor and felt quite safe to leaves the doors open at night and did not have to fork this out , to rent a kettle for two weeks is €64 of which €40 is refunded on departure , when my wife questioned the cost Bambi the night porter informed us it was because nearly 7 kettles are not returned every week , we later found out we could but one in stalis for 10€, which we will do on our return someday, safety despoit box is 35€for two weeks and nothing back on return of key.
Pool area is quite big and about 1730 in the evening you start getting shaded areas, sunbeds are a joke you will be lucky to find one that is not broken , pool itself is not huge but clean enough and the deep end is just under 6ft and the shallow end is shallow below your knee , there is also a kiddies pool with a circular waterfall and all the kids seemed to love it ,
it is a 10 min walk in to stalis itself and most of it on the way back is flat one steep hill to conquer . the mini market in the reception area is very costly and it would be worthwhile buying everything you need in stalis itself . towels and bed lined where changed every second day Eventhough these apartments have some bad points i would certainly revisit them in the future .

Well folks,where do I start?
Being a lover of Greece and the Greeks I will give my review on the Lyda Horizon.

My husband and I just returned last night after a wonderful 2 weeks holiday at this hotel.

The hotel is lovely, the views fantastic.

We had room 108 looking over the pool and sea.

The pool is great, overlooking the sea, there's a baby pool also.
The pool bar serves lovely food, the special of the day is written on a board and is only 5euro,a good menu to cater for all.

The staff are so nice and helpful, Shirley (Maria), Yanni, they are the best, very friendly and helpful, they get to know you and will advise on information about the area.
A great service from them and a good laugh too, they made us feel so welcome.

The staff in general were very nice.
At receptiion,we were looked after very well, they were also friendly and helpful.

As for Anastasia who cleaned our room, she is such a lovely lady, spoke a little English but we understood each other pretty well, she cleaned our room every day except Tuesday, her day off.

Entertainment was good,film night,greek dancing,bbq nights,pool competition,lots of good hearted fun.

Overall we had a lovely holiday at the Lyda and will be going back next year again.

Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable, especially Shirley (Maria)and Yanni.
From May and Gorgejo.

Hey, just got home last night from the Lyda Horizons in Stalis, Crete. Altogether 6 of us travelled over together, myself and my girlfriend and 4 friends.

We had booked studio apartments with the 2 of us in one and our friends in another. while our apartment was fine our friends was absolutely tiny for 4 people (the 4th person sleeping on a camp bed). We were staying in the new section of the apartments and it was extremely noisy, every night you could hear exactly what was going on around the apartments. the apartments are extremely basic but very clean. Both apartments paid for air conditioning (which is very expensive) and only mine worked, our friends had to keep going back to reception to complain, which was to no avail, they received only some of their money back as they didn't complain on the first couple of days.

The staff in both the reception and particularly the snack bar could be very rude and unfriendly. while the snack bar has a good range of food available, their breakfast is much more expensive and not as nice as you would get down town.

The pool is very nice with an amazing view, although there is not enough parasols available. It is a good 10 minute walk into the centre, where you can find plenty of nice places to eat (Maria's Golden Beach in particular is lovely, very nice staff) and walk further up town before you go on to the beach.

On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised when we entered the reception area of the apartments prior to checking in. The panoramic views of the Gulf of Stalis from the reception area were very impressive indeed. Checking in didn't take too long, we paid our '€100 deposit' and gave the receptionist our passports which they keep for the first night of your stay.

Once we received our key we made our way down to our studio, number 208. My wife and I were extremely disappointed with our room for the many reasons I am about to list. Firstly, Budget Travel lists these studios/apartments in their brochure as being 'new' apartments. Well Budget Travel, you never mentioned that the Lyda complex consists of two separate buildings, the old 'Lyda Beach' block and the newly developed block. If you are unlucky like my wife and I were, you will find yourself thrown into one of the old apartments in the old 'Lyda Beach' block. In saying that, you may be one of the few lucky ones with a pool and panoramic sea view….good luck with those odds!

Our studio was much smaller than what we expected; it was also very dark and gloomy due to the fact that a tree had totally overgrown the balcony outside, obstructing any sunlight from getting through the balcony doors and the side window. The studio was very basic and somewhat impractical with regards to its layout; you may find yourself moving the furniture around a fair bit before getting settled. Budget Travel also claims that these studios/apartments will accommodate up to four persons, think they really mean two persons and two leprechauns!! They should really have sofa beds in these studios as the double beds take up most of your space.

My wife and I usually prepare our lunches in our apartment when on holiday; this year was an exception due to the lack of preparation and sitting space in the studio.

It states in the information booklet you find in your room that the apartments are cleaned by a maid every day and the sheets/towels are changed every 3 days, well sadly this is not the case. Our maid did not enter our studio at one stage for 3 days! When she did show up all she did was emptied the bins and occasionally sprayed the bath and brushed around. Also, make sure to go easy on the single toilet roll they supply as they only replace this roll every time the sheets/towels are changed, they expect you to purchase toilet roll in their mini market.

The studios do come with air conditioning, local charge of €60 per week or €10 per day; rip off if you ask me. The louvre doors and windows can be closed at night allowing the main sliding doors and windows behind them to remain open so to let the outside breeze circulate throughout your apartment whist keeping out the mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes here are a problem at night - make sure to bring spray mosquito repellent with and spray all exposed areas before heading out and reapply before hoping into bed later. Plug in mosquito killers don't really work in the apartments as the electricity in your room will not work once you leave with you key. This is a clever power saving device installed into each of the studios and apartments. It works like this; you must insert your door key into a holder by the door which will then turn on the power supply for lights and sockets, once you leave with your key the power supply is knocked off again. If you need to charge anything make sure you do so while you are in your apartment.

Our studio, number 208, was situated right next to the entrance of the complex and also next to the main busy road. It was constantly noisy outside; the traffic on the main road was always busy - day and night. Also, because we were next to the entrance we were constantly kept awake by groups of late morning revellers returning to their apartments to continue their partying. Even though we both had ear plugs the partying & music from other apartments could be heard pumping into the early hours of the morning…..and that happened every morning! My wife and I do not have children and warn you that this is not a place for children or anyone seeking quiet accommodation!! We found the groups staying there to be very inconsiderate and disruptive both during the day and especially at night.

Lyda Horizon Staff
Prior to heading off on our holiday I read some reviews about the reception staff at the Lyda Horizon and all your negative reviews were 100% actuate. The reception staff were very unfriendly and extremely unhelpful.

Lyda Horizon Swimming Pool/Rock Bathing
The swimming pool is a grand size with plenty of sun bathing space and sun beds. There is also a small pool with a mushroom waterfall in the centre for young children. The poolside bar has a large terrace with amazing views serving a good selection of drinks and food.

The rock bathing area can be found a few steps down beyond the right of the pool area as you face out to sea. You can swim off the rocks or jump in from the boardwalk. My wife and I preferred the rock bathing area to the pool as the sea water was very relaxing and warm. It's a great spot if you like snorkelling as you will discover plenty of fish below you.

All in all I enjoyed Crete but would never return to the Lyda Horizon apartments as these apartments have been my least favorite apartments of all the places I stayed in.

Our studio (for 3) was in the original building and was a fair enough size for 2 but not for 3. The kitchen!! part was tiny with 2 hot plates, fridge with ice box not freezer and no grill or microwave. Bring your ice bags to make ice cubes because I didn't see any bags of ice anywhere. (probably wouldn't have fit into it anyway!)

Not a lot of cupboard room. The bathroom was dark, even with the light on and the shower didn't attach to the wall but there was plenty of hot water. I would say that the suite was in since the place was built and would need updating.

Studio well enough furnished and even had 2 armchairs but not a lot of drawer space, ok for us but not for 3. The balcony was average size and we were lucky enough to get one over looking the pool and the sea.

Cleaning could have been a bit better but not too bad either.

We ate a few times at the pool bar and it was grand although the bar prices for drink was a bit steep.
Some of the hotel staff were not the pleasantest, others were great. That's usually the same anywhere.

Entertainment, well all I can say is they tried.

The pool is the best we've ever seen and is definitely 10/10. Good size with loads of sunbeds and parasols and with a massive sun terrace. The children's pool is also good and has a giant mushroom that turns into a shower at regular intervals.

I thought the apartments were nearer to stalis than they were and it was a good 15 minutes walking leisurely to reach the start of the restaurants and shops and about another 10 to get to the ATM.

It cost 6 euros for a taxi from the rank to the apartments and considering the distance I thought it a bit steep when it was only 7 euros to go to Hersonnisis which was a lot further.

The new apartments looked beautiful from the outside, dont know what inside is like. If the older part was painted and updated a bit it would all look well.

This Hotel is advertised in the Budget brochure as a 4*. The reception area etc. may be but the apartments are more of a low grade 2*. The cleaning of the apartments was O.K. but I think we got 2 loo rolls for a family of 4 during the 2 week stay. The one bedroomed apartments are tiny with one wardrobe for four people so you really have nowhere to put your clothes. They are supposed to have sofa beds in the living area but they are normal beds so if you want to sit down , you sit on a bed. One tiny table and only 2 dining chairs for 4 people.

The view from the hotel is fantastic but so are their prices in the snack bar.

I don't think it's suitable for families either as it is mainly occupied by young people who seem to think it's O.K. to play loud music on their balconies till 7.30 a.m.

I stayed in these apartments last week from the 17th June to the 24th June.

When we arrived at the hotel/apartments we had to give a 100 Euro deposit - take note to keep the receipt as you will need it to get your money back at the end of your stay. They also hold on to your passports for the first night but you can get them back at reception at any stage after that. To rent the safe in your apartment costs 15 Euro for the week (not sure what it was for 2 weeks). Air Conditioning was 60.00 Euro for the week - which I though was very high! Or 10 Euro a night.

Our apartment was in the new building. I did request a quite room but we were facing the road (about 20 Feet away) and it was very noise, we were also boarding the apartments next door which played music every night, however it did go off about 11.30/Midnight. The apartment itself was very basic. The bathroom was a good size, beds were fine. Balconies on the coner apartments were huge but the ones in between where tiny. The kitchen was basic as you can get and very disappointing. During the day you could hear the builders upstairs working away. At this stage we were going to make the most of it.

The pool is a big size with a lot of sun loungers but most of the ones around the pool are gone by about 10am with towels on them, though you wouldn't see the people from the morning to evening. The entertainment was none existence. I would agree with another poster who pointed out the world cup matches where not in English and they also player loud music so you couldn't even hear what they were saying or get the atmosphere from the crowd.

Stalis itself is a good 10 minute walk along a walkway. And my major annoyance was this. The walkway was new and near the hotel there are steps and an uneven surface. At night it can get very dark and some of the lights near the hotel weren't working. I was on holidays with my sister and maybe we were just over concern but we didn't feel at all safe!!

During the day down the walkway were 2 places where you could swim, we went there most days. We ate out most nights, there was some lovely places to eat, I really couldn't fault the food!!

We were to Athens ( booked it myself before we went) for an over night stay, we loved Athens and this made our trip.

On the day we were leaving, you have to vacate your room by 11am or if you want to stay till 2pm the fee is 30 Euro. We were woken rather abruptly by the cleaning staff at 10.15am. Everyone we met in Crete was lovely with the exception of the cleaning staff. I have never met such a rude woman. We were very clean - I like to think anyway! But she gave out about dropping towels in the bathroom and constant tutting around the apartment. The sheets weren't changed for the week and could should really have been at least once for the price we paid.

I have only been on 2 other sun holidays so I don't really have much to compare it to. It is suppose to be 4 Star, I think its more of a 3 Star. Would I come back again? I don't think so.

The hotel itself is beautiful, right on the coast, very clean, nice gardens, gorgeous pool. They're in the process of completeing a new apartment block at the moment and during our trip there were some people already staying in these new apartments. They were not happy as it felt like they were staying in a building site but these should be completed soon.

The food is okay, much better value down in Stalis which is only a five minute walk along the sea. The supermarket in the hotel is ridiculously expensive and the drinks in the bar are also much more expensive than down in the town. Entertainment was pretty much non-existant and when it was provided it was brutal.

My advice would be to use the hotel to sleep and sunbathe and to eat, drink and party elsewhere.

Myself and my boyfriend have just returned from a week at the Lyda Horizons, the view from our balcony was absolutely amazing - we asked for a sea view and that's what we got but in all honesty that the only nice thing I can say about the Lyda Horizons.

The staff were not very helpful or polite and the maid service was not existent until the third day, the "self catering" was just a small fridge with a hob on top and a sink, you couldn't keep anything in the cupboard due to the large amount of ants, the towels and bedding had definitely seen better days and there were no curtains at the side window of our apartment and as this over looked one of the main walkways it was more than a little inconvenient.

The food at the snack bar was over priced as were the drinks and asking for two large beers would get you two beers but they would be different sizes, neither the food not the drink were particularly nice, needless to say we only went there the once.

Ok visited these Apatments in Aug 2007 but on review only goes to 2004. Anyways apartments an absolute joke, studio apartments for two is more or less a small 4X4 room with a hob and fridge in the corner. Manners of the reception staff was most unfriendly & un proffessional. Both me and my partner are only in our 20's and used to go out every night till 3 or 4 in the morning and when we came in used to make no noise, as we were in the new block and there was no security or anyone to keep noise to a minimum, noise went on till 8 or 9 in the morn with gangs banging and kicking each others doors. On numerous nights there was rows where one night a guys nose was broke. Pool Area nice, Snack bar 3/10 you would eat it if majorly hungry. Marias Golden Beach best food very friendly staff. Thought was a cheek asking for security deposit of E100 when ur only in the door and Budget Travel forgot to mention this. Air conditioning v expensive. Apts clean to an extent but again cleaner only came every 3days. Entertainment was crap and never got an audience. Definitely would not reccomend these apts and will never return to them.
