We have just returned from a 2 week break over Christmas and New Year with my wife and 3 children.
You cannot walk round this extremely exceptional island due to the fact they have built water bungalows and any attempt to go near them you are ushered away! They have installed “fences”

Overall the views were amazing and fish in the reef were truly outstanding. I and my eldest son (14) did manage did manage to do a few dives which again did not disappoint in the slightest. The dive team was ok (a couple of Germans and two French Canadian’s)

The resort had no entertainment (worth mentioning) of any description for the whole 2 weeks, there was no-
Entertainment programme, Daytime Activities programme, Weekly traditional live music, Giant chess, Beach party, cocktail party or Board games.

Nice New Years Eve party though. 7.00 Till 8.00 pm the free cocktails (choice of only two made with either local rum or vodka) was very different. Has to be said the best meal of the fortnight even though there was no sea food let alone lobster.

If you like fresh juice drinks in the morning with your breakfast do not come here it is orange cordial (made very strong though to conceal the fact)

If you love powered milk with your coffee & tea please visit here, the way it looks & taste is enough to turn you to drink (beer I mean).
All cocktails are to be charged for including the kid’s non-alcoholic.
If you fancy sitting in the main bar (the only one where it’s all inclusive and you do not pay extra for the drinks) or the restaurant it does get extremely hot due to the fact there is no air conditioning or ceiling fans please visit here. If you fancy a drink at the one and only beach side bar make sure you do before 6.30pm as after this they charge for everything.

The brochures tell you that baggage goes by boat on the way and arrives several hours after the seaplane transfer. The brochures do not mention that the same thing can happen on the way back. Our luggage had to be packed and sent off the day before (we left new years day), what service.

The food is served buffet style with some instant cooking in the restaurant. The omelettes were very nice and the chef cooking them was a master at it!
There was generally queue’s, but hey this is Xmas and the busiest time of the year. Perhaps the queue’s could be shortened if they used more staff (a lot has left apparently don’t know why??) or even if they stopped the workers (Maldivian’s, very nice people might I add) from allowing them to either push through to the front of the queue or queue along side you!!!!
But this is not there fault as the cooks also keep an eye out for them and encourage this practise. I’m all for mixing with the locals but not when we spend several precious hours (of holiday time) queuing for food over a period of 2 weeks.

The waiters bring the drinks and clear the dishes (eventually). Choice of food is average to say the least (if you like curries at breakfast and dinner you’ll love it here, none at evening meal though), different meats (chicken, beef, lamb & pork always cooked the same way), fish (always tuna sometimes tinned & fresh) and salads. Salads were a bit basic to say the least. Pasta & Rice every day. Fresh tropical fruit was in short supply, and it was so nice from the tin.Passion fruit a couple of days. The house wine was ok (meal times only), it made a change from the imported Dutch beer. If you want lobster and shell fish you will have to fork out up to $100 plus a head in the specialist restaurant. Even though this also was cancelled, disappointing all the romantic couple’s seeking this option. We did have fried local fish one day (tuna), oh and a very nice poached fish (tuna) with a sauce of some sort, in two weeks.

It’s the only place where we have holidayed at Xmas & New Year where Lobster was not part of the gala meals. Disappointed is not the words I would use here.

Evening entertainment (sometimes) was limited to the house two-piece combo. The in house music system they played the same track including George Michael’s last Xmas (I gave you my heart the very next day….they played it again) so many times all 5 of us know it off by heart even my youngest aged 7 (even on new years eve)

Overall a great holiday was had by our family but what really and only made it were the natural features of the island above and especially below the sea. If it wasn’t for these two factors (3 actually because the locals were really nice and helpful). All 5 of us really enjoyed the snorkelling on the reef.

The shoddy performance of the tour operator First Choice and the rep that visited the (mid) first week and was met by a barrage of complains. After this she did not visit “because the island is full and there is no room to stop”. But when I rang to complain 2 days before we left (as my wife did the first week) she did state “ well I’ve been ringing your room and no ones answered” I did explain I was on holiday and there is no one in during the day only the first thing in the morning and early evening!

The service in the main bar was particularly slow and painful even with 12 or so customers in early evening (approx. 7.30 pm) I’ll leave you to guess what it was like later on!!!!!
After holidaying abroad far & wide for the last 25 years or so (sometimes twice a year) this is the first time I’ve had to complain. I hope it’s the last.

I rate this resort between a 1 and 2 stars. The money in which we paid for this would probably clear some third world country’s national debt.
Do yourself a favour book somewhere else. Anywhere but here.

We decided to stay in the watervillas as this was our honeymoon and upgraded from B and B to half board. Doing this locally is cheapaer (50US$ every day for a couple instead of 50£UK).

The seaplane tranfer from Male makes for fantastic views and being watervilla guests we were rested in special longes in male whilst awaiting our seaplane. On arrival at the hotel we were whisked to the otherside of the hotel in a speedboat unlike the other guests.

Watervilla guests have their own facilities completely (5 star) unlike the other accomodation types (beach villa- 4 star). The watervillas restaurant is amazing with 6-8 course meals in the evening- presentation of food is amazing, tastes great and staff are exceptionally friendly and bend over backwards to help.

The watervillas are stunning, only a year old and have all facililites (surround sound, views of the ocean, stairs in the coral reef for snorkling, own provate outdoor jacuzzi and tanning deck and outdoor doubble bed!. The bathrooms are brilliant- clean and very modern and spacious (his and her sinks, good power showers etc etc)

The reef around the island is good - many people were saying that for a house reef it is one of the best in the maldives.

There is not much to do in the nighttime- we wandered over to the 4star part of the island, had drinks in their bar and livened up their disco (always quite empty but the DJ is good).

Any food or drinks taken in the 4star part of the island needs to be paid for by the watervilla guests although the 4star part is AI.

There is an ayurvedic centre which offers diet advice, treatments, massages etc and two further mainstream spas. There is also a reflexology centre. There is no animation/entertainment team on the island.

The holiday is really fantastic for a couple wanting to get away from everything. The beach villas were looking a bit tired/shabby from the outside- that maybe because the watervillas were exceptional. Also, if your staying in the watervillas you are truly pampered! The staff drop everything to do things for you like cart you around the island in a golf cart, holding your umbrellas, fetching things for you, cooking you specialties- the 4star guests were definately treated in a more inferior way.

We did the night fishing trip and an evening trip to a near by island- both fun. The island is really relaxed about selling tours etc and so if you are not proactive you could end up not doing any excursions/using any spas etc.

We would definately go again! We have never eaten so well in such beautiful surrounding (so many stars at night) and in such luxury accomodation!

We flew First Choice Airways and paid for a premium upgrade. The crew were fantastic and the meals and service were very good. We landed on time at 9.30am and after clearing customs were transferred to the seaplane terminal. Our luggage was sent by boat. We boarded our seaplane at 11.45am and arrived in Meedhupparu about 45 minutes later.

We were escorted to reception and greeted with a cold towel and a cocktail, both of which were very welcome. Our luggage arrived at 8.00pm and we were thankful that we had packed swim wear, toiletries and a change of clothes in our hand luggage.

We had a room near the north jetty which was great for snorkeling but the sea is rougher this side. We loved the outdoor shower and the twin wash basins.

The food was extremely good with plenty of choice. The evening meal was always themed. Our favourite was the Mediterranean night.

Breakfast was always a choice of fruit, cereals, pancakes, waffles, cakes, freshly made omelette's, fried, boiled or scrambled eggs. The list is endless.

Lunch always saw a collection of curries as well as various other dishes. You will never go hungry.

The Italian entertainment team was no longer there and the evening entertainment took place in the main bar. It was usually a duo singing or karaoke.

Most of the people when we were there were British with a few other nationalities as well.

We tipped our waiter 5 USD per evening, our room boy 30 USD per week and the bar staff a dollar a round. We also tipped the gardener for giving us coconuts and setting out our loungers every day. They were worth every penny.

Our waiter Ashraf would show us various ways to fold napkins, tricks with matchsticks and always made sure we had full glasses. Our room boy cleaned up a couple of times a day and always made patterns with the sheets. On our last evening we had rose petals all over the bed and goodbye written in petals.

TIPS

Don't bother with clean clothes to travel home with. Use the same day laundry service. It is so cheap and you get 50% off further laundry bills.

Take flip flops for around the pool but other than that you will not need shoes.

They provide clean beach towels each day so save on luggage space and don't pack any.

Use a high factor sunscreen as the sun is very strong. We used factor 30.

Take a lilo to sit on as the plastic loungers get very uncomfortable after a while and they do not provide mattresses.

We loved this hotel so much that we have booked to go back next year for 3 weeks

My wife and I chose Meedhuparu as our honeymoon destination and found it absolutely fantastic.

I would not recommend it for the evening entertainment or for those who want to 'keep busy' as it is aimed at relaxation and gentle water sports/diving etc. but if you enjoy snorkeling, diving and just quietly reading/enjoying each others company in the wonderful sunshine go there!

You can walk around the island and be lucky to see another human being.

The food was excellent every meal without fail.

The staff were friendly and helpful at all times, the dive centre staff were exceptional and we would go back again without hesitation.

One of the best things is the flight from Male to Meedhu as the views over the islands is breathtaking.

Thanks First Choice and Meedhu!
