The Daskalakis Apartments are not as the Olympic website states in Gerani, but are situated in Pirgos Psilonerou which is close to Maleme. This was a major disappointment for me it was a good 30 minute walk to the outskirts of Gerani. The website and brochure both state the Apartments are in a quite area as there are no other hotels or apartments near by, but the apartments are situated only a few meters off the main coastal road so you often hear the traffic from very early to very late. Yes the local bus stop is only a few yards away but it is hit or miss how often the buses run.

The block of twelve Apartments do look very lovely and are clean, up to date, but basic. Half the grounds are taken up by the pool and the other half is what I can only describe as an allotment. The pool is not suited for children as it drops off from a few feet down to over eight feet in a very short distance. As the Apartments are self-catering, the local supermarket were the nearest cash point machine is situated is in Maleme which is a fifteen minute walk away. You need to go a bit further to reach the local bars and restaurants. The local beach is also a 15-minute walk away, which I covered in pebbles; you will have to visit Platinas or Agia Marina for a sandy beach.

The bar staff are not very helpful with information on what is going on and as the apartments are only for Olympic customers you will need to know great savings can be made on their trips. For boat trips just visit the harbour in Chania/Hania/Xania (a few Euro’s on the bus) were you just pop on one of many boat trips from one to five hours for up to fifteen Euros.

The actual accomodation is lovely, and contrary to the other report on here, as the parent of a three year old the pool was great. You'll need arm bands for safety, but there is a lovely 50cm Deep childrens section pretty much barricaded off, then there is the 1.2 metre bit, then the drop.

The rooms are just off the coast road but the noise wasn't an issue for us and we have a young child!

Illios behind the bar is just lovely and doted on our little girl. There isn't a great selection of food at the bar but enough to get by on if you fancy a snack in the day, but we'd really recommend the sunday night BBQ for 13 euros a person. Yummy! Edward, his brother, doesn't speak a huge amount of english but is a real sweetie. We found them nothing but kind and helpful.

This hotel seems to be mostly frequented by couples in their fiftees, or people visiting others having houses built in the area. This is probably because it suits those who are hiring a car best.

We had a lovely time, but the location was a bit wrong.

We had a lovely time, but the location was a bit wrong.

The nearest decent places to eat are in Malame- walk past the co-op supermarket (the best place for food and cashpoint) then take the next road down to the right, walk to the end of the road and there are two decent tavernasd opposite each other with big childrens play areas- a Godsend!!

If you have a young child the big problem will be there is at times no footpath along the road into town and it is a busy road. This is the reason we would not go back. If you haven't booked yet and have children, try agia marina instead, if you have already booked, make sure you take a torch with you to keep safe on the road at night.
