Handy for all the attractions and sights of Ciudadela, this excellent modern hotel basks in the sunshine right beside the waterfront, making it an ideal choice for families. The surrounding area is quiet, yet the old quarter and harbourside with restaurants and cafs are just 900 metres stroll away. There's a small beach 15 minutes away on foot, or take advantage of the free shuttle bus to Cala'n Bosch Beach further away.

we tried to book at this hotel this month, but for some reason we couldent.we eventually settled for another hotel on the island.out of curiosity we went to see the town, and decided to pass by the esmerelda hotel.we soon found out why we couldent book there.the esmerelda is no more, just a sad pile of rubble.it is all fenced off and deserted, with just an eerie silence broken by the odd gust of wind.what a sad end to a lovely hotel.i would to know the reasoning behind it,madness.

This hotel has the potential to be lovely. Ciutadella is beautiful and we would definately visit there again.

Unfortunately, the thing that let this hotel down was the food. One word - "pants". It was truely awful.

Luckily the food descriptions on labels above meant you knew what the food was - you couldn't always tell by looking. It really was that bad. On several occasions we walked in and then walked out. Hubby ate the kids nuggets and chips to keep him going. Youngest daughter survived on bread rolls. Year before we had been to another all inclusive on the island and she ate really well.

There are two restaurants, one which you have to book a table. The food in the second restaurant was much better, but really it was only adequate. It should of been like this in the other restaurant as well. We don't know why it was so different.

Ice cream and ice lollies were nice for the kids. Chocolate poffiteroles were lovely! I just should of eaten more to get me through the week!

This hotel is good if you're on a diet.

Room was nice, cleaned promptly, air con excellent. Need to improve entertainment in the evenings - a couple of good acts though.

Kids went to kids club and enjoyed themselves.

Swimming pool was nice, salt water was fine. Lots of sun beds.

The hotel was nice and clean but the food was very repetitive and many people complained but it was nice. There was only 1 restaurant open as they said it was not high season - in July!!! After many complaints they did open it but the food was just the same as the other restaurant.

I was worried about the salt water pool but it was great. The hotel was not very busy so there was plenty of room around the pool and you could always get a sunbed.

The entertainement was poor but they did have a couple of outside entertainers that were reasonable.

My boys loved the kids club and the girls who looked after them were great.

There were rumours that the hotel was being demolished in October....

Once again stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks, enjoyed it, and it is really good value for money. Don't expect the Ritz, it is a bit stuck in the 70s, so in need of modernisation, but is very clean and tidy.

We love the location, but it is good to hire a car, as it is a town more than a resort, so not for beach lovers really!. Lovely harbour to stroll along, leading to lovely unspoilt Cuidadella town center, with its narrow cobbled streets, and lovely square where regular buses line up to take you all over the island. Also you can get free bus outside hotel to Cala n Bosch, which has nice beach and harbour.

Also bike hire is free at the Esmeralda, and the air conditioning too. This hotel catered for every age and walk of life, it's not at all rowdy, no British bars, bucket n spade shops etc.

Lovely clean saltwater pools, plenty of sunbeds and chairs..

Food is more English than Spanish we thought, and although good selection, does get a bit repetative, so in second week we had a few lovely meals out down at the harbour, which as we paid the same price for all inc as some paid at other places nearby for self catering, we didn't mind..

The only grumbles are...the toaster in the restaurant at breakfast time! Very slow and has big queue, you'll find out!..and also they could do with some fly zappers too...but I can live with that and will go back here again.

kids loved it too!......

All in all...you get what you pay for!!...ps, definatly pay for a sea view, 4 euros a day, and it makes all the difference!

Just got back from the Esmeralda. This is our third visit to this hotel. As for cleanliness, helpfulness of staff, location this is excellent.

The food we thought was good although by the end of two weeks you tend to get fed up the the same old thing.

The entertainment was diabolical, one of the reasons why we have returned to the hotel so many times is the entertainment but we were very disappointed this time. A couple of times we had professional shows but the rest of the time was makeshift quizzes or competitions. A 3.30 you had to move back from the pool because water polo started with huge adults dunking and pushing in the children. Again with a little more organisation there could have been a children's then an adult game.

Only a couple of moans from us, yes we will probably return knowing that the entertainers will be moving on.

We stayed at the Esmaralda for two weeks. I asked for a sea view but when arrived got put into a back room there was no balcony, just a rotted window which when opened had a shear drop. As we had 2 small children this was dangerous. The room was awful!

I complained and was told that as the hotel was full that
I would have to spend one night in it and could have a sea view in the morning.

We eventually got moved at lunch time the next day. The sea view with balcony is at a small charge of 4 euros a day, it was well worth it!

The difference was like being moved from a tent to a palace!
the view was fantastic, and the room was quite spacious and very clean.

If you want a sea view state it by fax or email before you arrive, I telephoned and it wasn't recorded.

Overall the hotel was really nice, food was plentyful and varied, with small kids menu.

The pool is saltwater which none of us minded, kids were happy, it was cleaned every day.

The hotel is in a fantastic location, overlooking the mouth of the harbour, our kids loved watching the ferries and boats coming in and out.

The staff were pleasant enough, they had there own entertainment team which kept the kids happy, but not really enough entertainment for the adults.

As the hotel was full you would think there would be queues for food and drink as we were all inclusive, but we didn't have to queue at all.

We all enjoyed our stay there and would go again some time in the future.

We would recommend you hire a car to discover this beautiful island!

We stayed for a week in the Esmerelda and in general found this to be a pretty good hotel. The rooms are spacious and clean, but not all have a balcony and if you want a sea view you must make this clear at time of booking as we had problems with this when we arrived.

The food is ok but can be slightly repetitive. The waiting staff are very friendly and helpful in the main restaurant. But this is not the case with the bar staff who are very abrupt and seem to find serving the drinks a chore.

In general for a week the hotel is good, its ten minutes walk from the beautiful harbour with all its bars and restaurants and in a good location.

Just returned from the Esmerelda, didn't expect such lovely weather for mid May! Its the beginning of the season, so hotel not very full, there was a good mixture of ages, and a few who had made return visits like we probably will!

The hotel was lovely and clean, it had just been freshly painted, although it is a bit dated..def either book a sea/pool view room or upgrade for 4 euros a night..well worth it..lovely clean pool, although its salt water, you get used to it, take your goggles!

The food was better than I expected(from reading previous reviews on here)..don't expect a la carte though, good selection at all meal times.

Our kids loved the food which was quite amazing! The only thing was the toasting machine at breakfast, it has to go round 4 times, very slowly! But it was only thing I heard people moaning about in dining room!

The drinks at the bar are good, snack bar for kids at poolside was good too! Its in quiet location, no English bars or bucket & spade shops! Which suited us fine.

A 10 min stroll up road takes you to lovely cuidadella, with its quaint cobbled streets and lovely square..or walk along the harbour to nice traditional restaurants..free bus to nearby cala n bosch from hotel where theres a nice beach and things for kids to do.

Staff were helpfull and knew their jobs, but not over friendly. Entertainment wasn't very good, but hopefully this will pick up for higher season..not too much for kids to do, but they seemed happy enough running about with new friends, football court and playground at back of hotel, and had good time!

Already looking at returning later this year, all in all its a good value for money hotel..you get what you pay for, and it was very reasonable.

Just come home from a week in the hotel. It was our first time abroad so cant judge much.

The hotel is cleaned every day and kept that way.The food was lovely but could have been hotter but cant judge again as first time away.

There was always plenty to choose from every day of the week. The hotel is in a quiete but lovely part of the Ireland. There is always buses every hour to diffrent parts of the Ireland wich you must see.The hotel staff are always on hand to help in anyway.

The entertainment was very poor but we went at the beginning of the season so should pick up soon.

I would definitely come back to this hotel but more in the season.

Our first impression of the Esmeralda was that it looked a very nice hotel.

We got there rather late on a Friday night and were told there would be a meal waiting for us as we had missed our evening meal. We checked in and took the advice of others from this website and upgraded to a sea view room - well worth the money. If you don't you are likely to have a room overlooking the children's play area and looking directly onto other buildings or be looking at a mound of grass!!

We left our cases in reception and went through to the restaurant for our evening meal. Unfortunately, we weren't too keen on what was awaiting us!! There were plates on the tables with a slice of ham, slice of cheese and a few bits of lettuce wrapped in cling film - we decided to wait until breakfast!!

As the holiday progressed, the food appeared to get worse. It seemed to be the same food day in, day out. The soup was like water and the food wasn't very warm. We ended up living on hotdogs from the snackbar in the end.

The hotel itself was nice enough, found it to be clean, our room was nice and the view was lovely.

The staff seemed pleasant enough too.

We just had a bit of a problem with the weather and location. During our stay, it practically rained throughout, was very windy and we had a thunder and lightning storm one night. There wasn't really much to do. We couldn't go to the pool as it was too cold - not the hotel's fault, we know.

The beach looked quite nice and peaceful but rather small and there was never anyone there. We later heard that the sea at this particular spot was contaminated, how true that is, we do not know. There is a bus to a bigger beach but the weather stopped us from going. There is a nice harbour with boats coming and going but theres only so many times you can walk along the same stretch!! In our opinion, we found the location to be aimed at locals rather than tourists. There weren't too many shops about but loads of estate agents!! The only trips the hotel seemed to offer were those on a boat and we didn't fancy travelling by sea given the weather conditions!!

All in all we were rather disappointed with our holiday. There were quite a number of guests leaving the same day as us and I didn't hear one person say a good word about the place. New guests were arriving and some people were telling them to get back on their bus and go home as they wouldn't enjoy it. We heard that the hotel had been taken over by new management and since then had gone downhill as the new owner didn't seem interested, again, we don't know whether this is true or not.

We would travel back to Menorca but I think next time we will choose an area which is closer to amenities and beaches. We don't want an action packed holiday but we do want something to do whilst we are away from home.

Went out to Menorca for my 40th birthday. Found the Hotel, its staff and food to be excellent.

The room was very nice, with an excellent view of the sea. It was well cleaned every day, by a very friendly maid.

The reps were pleasant and knowledgeable, but the evening entertainment was poor.

The 'entertainment, including the usual 'mini-disco' took place in a large room, which had an awful PA system, which they always had too loud. There really was no escape from the noise.if you didn't want to hear it, and there was no other quiet room to sit after dinner, which annoyed me a bit.

The restaurant was nice and clean, and my wife and I really enjoyed the food. There was a very wide range of dishes. Not too much processed food, either. And the puddings!

All in all, a very nice place to stay, and we would go back there again.

We had not been on an all inclusive holiday for quite some years and we were cautious about the quality of food and staff.

We had no complaints at all regarding this, the hotel was clean, if not a bit dated in areas. The staff could not do enough for you.

The quality of the food was good, always a good selection and the restaurant staff worked hard to make sure they cleared away any unwanted plates etc. The buffet selection itself always looked fresh, and there was someone keeping an eye out for anything running out or any mess that needed cleaning up.

There were not long queues at the bar, the staff worked liked lightening to make sure everyone got served. Well Done.

We were worried about what we would find on our arrival after reading other reviews on this hotel however, apart from the reception and bar being a bit old fashioned we were pleasantly surprised.

It was very clean, the room we had had a sea view which we paid 4 euro a night to upgrade too ( well worth it), the food was varied and good, staff were very helpful and friendly even though they work long hours, hotels own entertainers worked very hard and got everyone in the holiday mood.

The professional shows were very good and the hotels own entertainment nights were ok.

If you expect five star accommodation and service don't go here if you want a fun holiday with clean accommodation, friendly staff and nice food this place is for you, its not the ritz but hey who cares you're on holiday and spend all your time out in the sunshine anyway.

The pool is clean but a bit rough on the eyes because its salt water.

We wouldn't go here again but ONLY because we never go to the same place twice.

My partner and I stayed at the Esmeralda for one week on an all inclusive basis, booked as a last minute deal with Cosmos. It was the first time we'd tried all inclusive and our hopes were not high, having taken money to pay to eat out if necessary! We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel and what it had to offer.

The hotel was really clean. At mealtimes and in the bar areas, plates and glasses were cleared away almost before you had finished with them! The buffet food is nothing out of the ordinary, but certainly OK for a week, with a reasonable range of dishes on offer. The smaller restaurant, 'Es Raco', has to be booked in advance for the evenings and is well worth it as it is much more pleasant than the main restaurant. The food is fresher than in the main restaurant and it serves fewer guests in two separate evening sittings.
The staff at the hotel really made the holiday for us - nothing was ever too much trouble, everyone was helpful, friendly and polite, from the chefs and waiters, to the maids to the reception staff.
Entertainment at the hotel was pretty dire to be fair but the staff try their hardest. There were a couple of good 'professional' shows during the week which were worth watching, but the other entertainment usually involved other hotel guests participating in 'men v women' contests, karaoke and Hawaiian nights. Our entertainment on these evenings was watching the hotel guests amusing themselves - not something I would want to participate in myself, but pretty funny and mildly embarrassing to watch all the same! The participants seem to enjoy themselves though!

I would visit the hotel again on a late deal - we really did get value for money, with a variety of food, snacks and drinks on offer pretty much constantly, and in generous measures!

The hotel is in a good location from our point of view. A short walk away from the harbour and its restaurants and a short walk in the other direction to a small beach.

We went to the hotel in September 2004 and had a great time so we booked again. This time the food was still very good and of good quality. The staff in the hotels were friendly and helpful, the rooms and hotel surrounding were kept clean.

This time there were problems. Firstly there was a bug going around people were getting different things wrong with them which included ear infection, sickness and diarrhoea, sore throats and coughs. Both my wife and my self became ill. We don’t think it came from the food because even babies were becoming ill and they were only having bottles made from boiled bottled water. As for the week’s entertainment compared to last year it was terrible the only good night was the magic show.

The people from last year had left and the new person in charge was not very good. Last year we were recommending this hotel to all our friends but not any more.

Visited the hotel for the second time and had a lovely holiday.

The hotel was once again spotlessly clean and all the hotel staff are great with nothing being too much trouble for them. One of the children was poorly for a couple of days but I do not believe this was anything to do with the hotel as others on the coach from different hotels were saying the same sort of thing.

The Cosmos kids club was great again - the highlight of the holiday for the kids being throwing Aoife and the other reps into the pool!

Food and everything else was great too.

The only downfall was the organisation and quality of the entertainment but bearing in mind the hotel was in the process of recruiting a new entertainment team that was only to be expected and I am sure when they have settled in everything will be back up to last years standard.

The hotel is in a good location on the point, we booked the Esmerelda to be in Ciutadella for the fiesta of Saint Joan, which is fantastic, but can be dangerous due to galloping horses. When you hear the drum and flute music, you must be aware that the horses will be coming to the area you are in and to take care ! You can view all the events from above in a safe area if you can get a space we were lucky.

The staff are nice, and always helpful.

The room was clean.

The food is ok, and we would book again.

The entertainment we thought was poor, and there was the usual people who would put their towels on sunbeds first thing in the morning making sure of the best spot, this needs to be sorted out.

All in all we enjoyed our stay in Ciutadella.

Had a wonderful holiday and the hotel exceeded our expectations.

The location is great and it is definitely worthing booking a sea view. The food was excellent with plenty of choice. booked alternative restaurant for most evenings and watched our steaks or chicken being griddled in front of us.

The staff are friendly and amusing and the hotel is spotlessly clean. Cosmos reps were great and the children's club offered great fun for the kids and a break for the parents.

Evening entertainment was a bit hit and miss some nights but the children loved it and when you are relaxing with a drink in such pleasent surroundings - who cares?

Hotel location was quiet without a bouncy castle in sight but that suited us. Just a five minute walk away is the town square with a free childrens play ground, bars, cathedral and shops all in quaint cobbled streets.

We are already looking forward to our next visit!

We booked last minute, so didn't expect great things.....how wrong can you be?!

The hotel is in a quiet location, away from hustle and bustle, but only a short stroll of about 10 minutes to the centre of town.

The staff were all very friendly, from the maids to the manager and were all helpful.

The food was good, with plenty of variety, and having a special childrens section too.

The entertainment was good, especially for the children, but Lili and Luca also were very good with the adults, and there was a good programme of daily events.

Chris, the Cosmos rep was very helpful and happy to help even when it was evident he was very busy, or even off duty.

I would happily recomend this hotel to any of my friends, although if you want discos and British pubs, this is not the resort for you.

My wife and I had seen this hotel on previous holidays in Menorca and felt that it would be to expensive for us and also the all inclusive side was always a trap. How wrong can one man be.

From the start of the holidays, Cosmos and the hotel were exceptional.

The rooms where very clean and spacious with maid service every day. The hotel, although getting old is slowly being renovated to a good standard, this in no way is apparent during your stay.

The hotel staff are very polite and helpful the surrounding grounds are very good with lots of areas to sunbath.

The pool is sea water but the best I have swam in and cleaned daily.

The holiday reps were very helpful, especially Chris, who dealt with whatever may have been asked of him until you were satisfied.

My biggest worry prior to flying was the food so I took enough extra money to avail myself of the local restaurants if need be, I brought all of it home again, the food was excellent. The breakfast alone was to my particular taste with a variety that could have afforded me a different combination for about 30 days. If you like good honest cooking like you get at home with a Mediteranean twist then this is the place to be.

Being low/mid season the entertainment was not fully in place but they were gearing up for the Whit bank holiday.

We stayed at the Hotel Esmeralda in the last week of October in the half term week. The hotel is lovely and situated facing the sea with very beatiful views. Unfortunately the hotel closed down on the Friday that we left so from the Wednesday things began to shut down. When we got there the shop had already shut, then came the man to uplift the Internet machines, then the pool bar closed (the next day the weather was bad so we couldnt use it anyway). From the Tuesday all the entertainment was off the cuff. On Thursday which was our last day it felt as if we were sitting in the airport lounge waiting for a delayed flight, all the cleaners were about clearing things out, the reception even had its plants taken away. To top the lot in the evening the bar staff had their screw drivers out and were taking down the fans that were on the wall in the bar. It was quite comical.
The food was quite poor, all of it was cold. They had placed a microwave in the restuarant for us to heat the food if we wanted it hot! - very worrying.

Apart from all the moaning we did have a very good holiday. We would definately go back to this hotel but never in the last week in october.

Just returned home from the hotel Esmeralda in ciudadela, we had a great time the weather was very nice for October. The food was very good, plenty of it and a good selection.

There were a few moaning Minnie’s regarding the food but in my opinion those people should not travel abroad. The hotel was very clean especially the rooms, we were disappointed initially not to get a room with a balcony but we were moved a couple of days later, rooms 240 and 340 amongst others do not have balconies.

Despite it being all inclusive the staff were very friendly and helpful, David, Enri, Lili, the entertainers worked very hard, and on the whole created a good atmosphere.

The pool is seawater and is cleaned every night. Get up early in the morning to reserve your sunlounger it’s not just the Germans who put towels over them. We arranged our own transport to and from the airport with resorthoppa.com which was about £40 return which was great value for a 40 minute journey.

We would definitely use this hotel again, as we had a great time. The location is quiet but the hotel lays on free buses every day for the beach.

We stayed at the hotel Esmeralda in September for a week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. As a young couple in our early 20s we were slightly disappointed by the amount of coffin dodgers that were there at first, but a couple of days into our hols the younger couples arrived.

We were pleased to have an ample amount of bingo wings in close proximity, and boy were they well cultivated. The staff were brilliant, especially the ever smiling Fran who always looked as happy as a pig in ****!

All the other staff were very friendly and approachable. The food was great with a vast buffet style choice and the alcohol; well that always tastes better when it’s free. All in all we would definitely pay another visit to this hotel. Hope this info has been a help.

Just returned from the hotel and it is a little tired and in need of maintenance in some areas, although I think that the lack of air conditioning was probably by design.

Staff generally very friendly and helpful.

A surprising number of children in evidence, when considering the summer school holidays were over.

Worryingly, some guests were being farmed out to a guest house down the road, as a result of overbooking.

We had phoned ahead and agreed to pay for an upgrade to a sea/pool facing room, which are well worth the money, but I would strongly advise that you wrap this up when you book, as they denied all knowledge when we arrived, but at least we were in the hotel, and after some arguing managed to get our way after 3 Days. Overall though you shouldn't lose sight of what this hotel is and is not.

Don't expect pristine 4 Star luxury on a beach, this is a great value for money, clean hotel, with friendly staff and a good overall package for a cheap deal and if you view it that way you won't be disappointed.

Some advice though - Go for a high floor with sea views, (book before you go!) And pre-book the smaller restaurant whenever you can.

The entrance doors and surrounding woodwork to The Esmeralda Hotel boast many coats of blistered blue paint, a most unwelcome sight to the newly arrived guest.

The Reception area is noisy & confined, with no air conditioning, There are no quality furnishings here or in the other public rooms, all of which resemble a working mans’ club. Cigarette smoke is everywhere. The only no smoking areas are the two Restaurants.

About 30% of the garden area is devoid of grass, it having been worn away. The area is watered every morning, so it is a quagmire in the morning and a dustbowl in the afternoon. The sun beds are of the hard plastic type, there are no mattresses on them and no towels are supplied.

The bedrooms are spartan, but larger than average & have an acceptable level of cleanliness. The air conditioning is very ineffective, the noise outside prevents sleeping with the doors open & temperatures inside rise to 100F. The bedrooms facing the sea also face over the pool & garden area, all the entertainment is held outside, right beneath the bedrooms, so expect no sleep until midnight! Also the road in front of the garden/pool area, whilst carrying only light traffic, is used by the local youth as a racetrack for their mopeds! The rooms have little privacy due to the curved construction of the hotel, therefore guests on the adjoining balconies have a good view of your bedroom & vice versa.

Restaurants, the main restaurant, you will have seen similar on any English Seaside prom’, the newer restaurant, is called Le Raco, this is better, but still uncomfortably hot. This requires reserving 36 hours before and is well oversubscribed. The Cosmos brochure states that there is a dress code, gentlemen are required to wear long trousers. This is not enforced, so expect to see hairy legs & vests at dinner, Cosmos also state that there is a Gala night, this does not exist! So ladies do not pack your posh frocks.

Good points, the view over the sea & harbour entrance is superb, the only beach is tiny & in a residential area a fair walk away. The food is not at all bad.

In summary this is a hotel positioned in a residential area away from main holiday areas, it is very noisy & hot. There is no customer care from the hotel staff, no service & a general lack of interest in the guests, the establishment is clearly run on a shoestring.

If all you want is free beer & a working mans’ club environment, this is the one for you, however if you are looking for a relaxing hotel with class, style & good service, avoid it.

I went to this hotel in 2004 and I loved it.

All the staff are very friendly and there is lots of people there to meet and make lots of new Friends.

The food is quite nice there is lots of people saying they don't like it but I thought it was quit nice.

The location is good there is shops nearby to go shopping and a 15 minute walk to the nearest beech. there is a nice sea view at the front of the hotel and if you at the top its a gorgeous view to the sea.

I liked the entertainment because there was things on every night I was there like karaokes and everybody was up dancing and magicians and lots of other interesting things.

If you are thinking to go to this hotel I would say definitely. I am coming back to this hotel in the future.

We have just arrived back from our holiday at the Esmeralda. This is without doubt the best holiday we have had,(tainted with great sadness) so much so we are booking up for next year.
I have to say we had some gremilins ie we had paid for a room with a sea view but we ended up with 1 of the 15 rooms at the back of the hotel which have not been refurbished. We had to wait 4 days for a room change which was still at the back but was very smart room. The entertainment was good for familes, lili David and Enara are great people. On a serious note the one thing i would not do is the scuba diving in the pool, this is run by a local scuba diving club which tout for business on a sunday morning at the hotel pool. Unfortunately myself and 3 pals did the pool sesion and then booked for 2 dives at sea. on second dive my pal steve had an incident which has left in hospital in menorca fighting for his life. this was a day before we were due to fly home.I think the hotel has stopped the scubba diving as they were not there on sunday...

Hotel is lovely and clean however there are are few rooms that have not been refubished. Davis Lili and Enara did a great job entertaining the kids and adults alike. The pool had to be closed for 24 hours while we were there as a little one had an toilet accident well done for being health consious rather not use the pool than be struck down with tummy upset.

Cosmos rep was a waste of space

This was my first holiday abroad alone with my children and I am so glad I ended up at the Esmeralda. I initially booked self catering allocation on arrival but was upgraded for an extra 120 euros at the airport. All inclusive turned out to be real freedom for a single mum. The Hotel is in a lovely positon right by the sea. Every day we sat in the lovely airy dining room and watched the boats bobbing on the azure sea as we ate. The front of the Hotel is very well maintained. The gardens are lovely, full of exotic plants and the pools are clean and attractive too. The rooms are well decorated, modern and spotlessly clean. The few nights I did stay in the hotel in the evenings were good. The Brazillian dancers were wonderful, and me and my girls had a good dance at the disco. The cosmos run kids club was great and my four year old loved the reps who were very friendly and warm in manner. In fact I cant fault the staff.

Firstly we had an excellent all inclusive 7 day holiday. We to make our own way from the airport so hired a car from Carjet, which turned out to be an great idea. We arrived at the hotel at 10.30pm, to be informed that a meal would be ready for us at 11pm in the main dining room. Our first room was 007, which was a garden facing room smelt damp, ? from the A/C. We asked for a change of room in the morning, to be asked for 4 euro per night for a sea view room, if you are booking ask for this in advance!. This was well worth it, as we moved to room 132. We had a lovely view of the entrance to the port and fort. Yes, this hotel is in a quiet area, but we visited other parts of the island which was much buiser, with tacky shops and British style pubs, I much prefered the Esmeralda hotel. The hotel is very well maintained, and very clean. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. There was activities through out the day, and entertainment ranging from, mini disco for the younger kids, Spanish dancing, Mr and Miss Esmeralda, a quiz night with a a twist.
The food was very good on most days. We booked a picnic the day before, as we planned to explore the island. Remember to book the other restuarant the day before, as it is very cool and more comfortable. We would have used it daily, but closed after day 2 for some reason?
The hotel had a lovely mix of guests, from British and Spanish..always a good sign I think, if places are used by their nationals.
On the 1 day it rained we got into the car an went to explore. Most days we went somewhere for a couple of hours. The island is full of interesting historical sites. The kids enjoyed everywhere we went to.
We are planning to book again, as we had a great time, and the all-inclusive deal was great value.

just returned from the hotel esmerelda, we had a great holiday. the room we had was 328, we had a fantastic view across the sea amd on a clear day, which we didn`t get many you can see majorca.

weather was typical minorca, 5 days hot 2 days cloudy and rain.hotel was very clean and the food was good. there is always something for everyone. lunch time was sometimes better than dinner in the resturant.
we didn`t book the other resturant, we were quite happy with the main one.
one grumble i did have was that they didn`t serve fried tomaotoes at breakfast everyday. only twice in the whole week. plenty of everthing else though.

very quiet location, not much to see unless you walk into cuitadella which is lovely. old town houses line the squares where the locals sit outside their front doors in the evening. the square near the bus station is nice at night. very spanishy, the locals playing football and chilling out.
the hotel is lovely, very clean and the staff are friendly. entertainment not very good. we dont have children so it was very boring if you have kids they do a good job with them. people with kids were complaining that some of the activities that had to pay for, so be warned.

the hotel provide bike hire for 20 euros for two hours. if you feel energetic get one there are great areas to ride all along the waterfront. plenty of seats to sit on and watch the boats coming and going from the local bay. very pretty scenery.

all in all we had a great time at the esmerelda.

As per comments before, the location was totally residential, no holiday atmosphere at all once outside the hotel grounds, until we actually got into Ciutadella town, which was a beautiful quaint town.
Beautiful harbour with gorgeous restaurants lining it, we found this out as we had to get away from the food in the hotel and pay for a meal outside.
Can't really fault the staff they were good especially David and Lili who tried with sheer desperation to keep everyone happy day and night, this being the problem entertainment wise, they were our entertainment!!!
All said the kids had a fantastic time met a lot of friends (as did we adults), this is a very safe hotel we were very happy to let kids roam around alone inside the grounds.

Just returned from 1 of the best family holidays we've ever had. The kids were constantly entertained - and lets face it, if they're happy the parents are gonna be happy.

Was put off before going as there seem to be lots of negative comments on this hotel. All I can say is some people just want too much. The hotel is right on the front with superb views and the kids (and us) loved watching the boats coming into the harbour.

The staff could not do enough and were always friendly and helpful even at the end of a long day. The hotel was spotless and a lot of attention seemed to be given to hygiene.

The food was typical of most all inclusives, nothing special but certainly good enough and I would agree with other coments that booking the newer restaurant each day is a good idea as it is nice seeing the food freshly prepared in front of you. Never had any problems with the cosmos reps and the kids fell in love with the kids club reps.

The daytime entertainment is good fun, David, Lili & Enara are great. The evenings aren't brilliant but again just typical of this sort of package - a few drinks and meeting a good bunch of people makes the holiday anyway.

Already looking forward to going back again in the future.

We have just got back from a 1 week stay at the Esmeralda. We all had a great time and could not fault the hotel at all. The only point to be made about the hotel is that Ciutadella is very quiet but we were expecting this before we travelled so were not dissapointed, also the salt water pool is a bit of a shame as this sometimes irritated the eyes.

The hotel is very clean and well maintained and rooms are very spacious. The Sea and Pool views are fantastic.

The entertainment team were fantastic for the children and the atmosphere within the hotel between all staff and guests is very friendly.

The food in the hotel was fine, despite some other peoples views........I think some people go abroad and expect pie and mash ! Both restaurants are buffet style and there was always a good selection of food for most tastes......we went with a 1 year old and always found something for her and my husband who is very fussy was never hungry. Granted I expect if you are there for more than a week things will be repeated but I suspect that would be the same for any hotel. But in all honestly I don't think that you could complain about the food it was always hot and plenty to choose from for both adults and kids.

All in all I would say the Esmeralda and it's staff are very diserving of there 3* Plus rating. We had a great time and the only reason we would not go back is because we always like to try somewhere different.

We travelled with cosmos on an all inclusive basis, i had heard that the resort was a little bit quieter that i was used to, but to say we expected to see tumbleweed blowing down the main street would not be an exageration. This is an o.k hotel in possibly the quietest place i have ever stayed in....purely residential, with not a sign of the usual shops or bars you would expect to see in holiday resort, and a lot of building work still ongoing. The nearest bars are three days camel ride into the marina, and as such they are mainly fish orientated and quite pricey.

The hotel itself is ok, the food leaves very much to be desired, undercooked and signs of the chef's creative recycling policy were in evidence.
There is a small play area for the kids, but this is tucked away at the back of the hotel where it is imposible to see the kids unless you sit with them, in no shade and difficult if you are with more than one child.

The entertainment was pretty poor (not if you enjoy bingo/karaoke and mr and mrs style entertianment that is), but i do object to paying a lot of money for an all inclusive holiday and than being expected to entertain myself!!!

That said the hotel entertainment staff work hard and during the day serve up some laughs (mainly David),and the cosmos kids club is run quite well although you have to pay for some of the activities, and the creche if you want to take advantage of that is quite expensive!

This is an ideal location if you are prepared to stay by the pool for 8 hours a day then again for 4 hours a night, or if you are really into looooong walks in scorching heat. The better options are the neighbouring resorts of cala n bosch and cala n forcat/blanes, 10 mins away by bus, where we ended up spending a lot of our time courtesy of the free bus tickets provided by the hotel. There is no beach at all at cuitadella, although there is one mentioned by the rep which is no more than a patch of wasteland 20 mins walk fron the hotel.

OH and it rained for three days, meaning you couldn't even use the pool, and nothing was organised for either the adults or the kids!!

We have just returned from a lovely week in Menorca. The Esmeralda is a lovely hotel, but in a strange location, right on the sea-front but surrounded by residential properties. Not an area that should house an establishment that encourages screaming, unruly kids, whose parents seem to think it totally acceptable that they should be running around the bar areas at almost midnight!!
The Esmeralda could be upgraded to be a 4/5 star hotel with the correct management.
The chef should be sacked on the spot,as the food is awful.

Well we have just returned from what must rate as the worst holiday ever. This hotel is by no means a 4 star, it might just scrape a 2 star. As for all inclusive we have ended up eating out for 50%+, as the food in the hotel is awful. OK so we went at the start of the season but the hotel was no where near ready for opening. There were only 35 people in the hotel and yet it took them 5 days to move us to another room as our toilet did not work!!

The hotel staff do their best under the circumstances and should not be blamed (except for the Chef). There
was no entertainment for the first few days at all and
this was compounded by the fact that the weather was
very bad and so people were bored.

Hotel Esmeralda is situated right by the end of the harbour and mostly overlooks the sea. It can be windy so take something warm to wear. The food was fine. A mixture of Menorcian cooked slightly english style I feel. Breakfast was excellent and there was plenty of choice. The entertainment wasn't too good but bear in mind we went only 2 weeks into opening, so rightly or wrongly, things hadn't got going properly yet. The resident entertainer/coach for the various football, rifle shooting etc. (David) was excellent. The pool is fine, but the beds are hard and flat ie no back rest for sitting and reading etc. The rooms were clean, quite large and very clean. The staff were excellent. Very friendly and helpful. If you have trouble walking then this is not good as the harbour with lots of shops etc. is a little too far for comfortable walking. We would not return only because my husband cannot walk too far and we need ideally to be situated somewhere closer to shops etc. there is also no beach to speak of, not the usual coves you expect from Menorca.

It was a lovely hotel, ideal for families to go on an all inclusive holiday as you can eat, drink and have as much icecream as the children can eat without worrying about your money.

Nice clean hotel and a seaview is a must! if you dont get one straight away ask at reception and you can upgrade with a small fee when a room is available and its worth the wait.

The hotel has got two restaurants both are nice but the upgraded one is worth booking into (24 hours before at reception) as most of the food is cooked in front of you by the chefs so its nice and fresh. We went to the beach a couple of times on the free bus to Cala'Bosch and the hotel provides a free picnic on request to take with you which saves you money on buying lunch while you are out the hotel complex.

The hotel is about a 15 minute walk into Ciudadela but if you just want a small shop its 2 minutes down the road. There's a small shop on site that opens up 2 times a day selling papers, ciggies etc. The staff are very friendly especially David and his wife Lillie who are the entertainers for the hotel and do very good job of it too!(especially with the children and the night time entertaining). There is a children club open different times every day but the only draw back - I don't think they are experts at looking after children and some of the club activities they did charged a stupidly high fee for the children to pay before,(and when you have got 2 young children it gets very expensive).

Overall the hotel is really lovely the swimming pool is nice and although it is sea water it didn't bother us at all, in fact we are going back in 2004!

Have just returned from the Esmeralda. Just as good as when we visited two years ago. Having read through other people's comments, I also agree about the Cosmos Reps. I felt they lacked experience, on talking to them I found that the majority of them had only just been placed at the hotel and so my first day there was also theirs!!! Not so bad at the beginning of the season but i went the last two weeks of August!

The hotel staff were briliant with nothing being too much trouble.

The only complaint that we had was with the parents of the large number of 14-17 year olds that were there. Having a 16 year old myself I realise that they like to spend time away from their parents and make new friends whilst on holiday, but the language and behaviour of some was shameful. Many were left to their own devices and parents only seemed concerned when challenged by the hotel staff as to 'Why their 14 year old was drinkinking alcohol and throwing chairs in the pool!' This is one of the few hotels that actually seem to cater for this age group and don't charge them adult prices. It would be a shame if the hotel had to change this because of the behaviour of a few.

We had a fantastic holiday (4 adults, 5 kids from 10-4)

Fantastic views, varied food (considering the buffet style)

good selection of drinks (The local Cava went down very well, as did the San Miguel- we got our monies worth !)) Friendly hard working staff and very good animateurs in David, Josh and Sylvia and Lili with the kids in the evening. Although the hotel was not near a beach it's location at the mouth of the harbour opposite a C17th castle and with brilliant views was perfect. Regular use of the free beach bus and the hotel picnics worked well and being able to take a 10 minute stroll to the ancient city or the bars and fish restaurants of the harbour was much better than being in a large resort.

The kids loved the pool (even tho it was saltwater) and we didn't need to follow them all day as we lay on the terrace.

Evening entertainment was varied ranging from good homemade fun from the animateurs to a fantastic show from Brazilian dancers. Firmly at the bottom of everything (entertainiment, information) was Cosmos, their reps were largely un-interested in everything except their own private jokes or when they could (TRY) to sell you something. In comparison with the hotel people who went around the pool telling you what activities there were and encouraging you to join in the Cosmos kids lot semed much happier for too few children to turn up so they could cancel that club session. So as people say below ,if you want to go to the waterpark have a look at the information available at the hotel reception and get the free bus, if you want to go for a days beach hopping cruise walk into the port and haggle, do everything to avoid booking Cosmos.

our only other complaint was the air-con which failed 2/3 times altho we were able to borrow a fan on 1 occasion.

to recap -

get seaview on floors 1/2/3

use the free bus for everything

drink lots of cava and San Miguel

get info from hotel reception

don't worry about the kids

After our second year at the hotel. Not much change from last year except for the entertainment. David and Lili (entertainers) worked hard as normal but this year they were joined by two more, Silvia and Josh(professional!!). Food was acceptable but i would recommend the other restuarant which you have to book. Any problems i would advise you to see Maru the deputy manager who is always willing to listen and have a chat. Some activities were changed and for the better, there is not enough adult entertainment but is excellent for families.Go to the water park which was a excellent day out but make your own way there and get free bus tickets from reception, don't go with the hotel package. The pool was salt water which is ok if you dont mind that. there is a pool side bar which is open for snacks and drink, Mikel the barmen is topman. Take a walk down the harbour one evening and dream!!. The Hotel is just 15 minutes walking distance from the town shopping area which has a market on Friday and Saturday.

Overall a good family holiday and i would recommend it.

Just back from the Esmeralda. Had a great holiday.

The hotel & food were good, the pool is salt water & could have been cleaner. The entertainment team were excellent.

Our children were unwell for travelling home, we wondered if it had been the pool, but the adults had all used it frequently as well. The hotel is in a quieter area of the town, but it was a lovely walk to the harbour. I would certainly consider going back.

I have just returned from the Esmerelda Hotel, I am afraid rather disappointed.

But I have to say that most of the disappointment is with our Tour Operator, Cosmos.

Firstly I should warn you that the swimming pool is salt water not freshwater as per the Cosmos 2002 edition Summer brochure. On the day that we left a large amount of children fell sick which delayed a Manchester flight home as the pilot wouldn't take them initially. After discussions between the parents the common denominator was that the children who had been in the swimming pool the afternoon before had all fallen ill. One parent showed me a childs swimming costume which was blue the day before and white the day after (bleach she guessed). The parent said that he had seen guys in white uniforms taking samples from the pool the evening before, so hopefully the problem will be sorted out. However I did feel sorry for the children who had been up sick all night and couldn't keep food or drink down. I would request a higher floor if possible as there were complaints of people on the 1st Floor of the hotel of there being cockroaches in their room. The 2nd and 3rd Floor were fine. I will put in some positives at this point, as it wasn't all bad. The entertainment staff are a scream and brilliant with adults and children, how the ladies hold the attention of large amounts of children for an hour is amazing. The hotel has 2 professional shows a week which we were a bit disappointed with. The rest of the week consisted of the bulk standard, Karaoke, Mr Esmerelda, Mrs Esmerelda, Men v Women challenge, which for the first week was amusing, but rather tedious the next.

A positive! We had a balcony view from the front of the hotel and I have to say the view is breathtaking.

The food is a bit samey, and you will be further limited if you don't like fish, if they could serve it up for breakfast they would. However I would recommend you book the El Greco restaurant as much as you can, the food in there is excellent, but get up early in the morning to book it for the night after that day.

Finally a dig at Cosmos! I have been on a number of all- inclusive holidays in the past, but I will not be going using Cosmos again. They are a rip off and a bunch of cowboys. A trip to the local Water Park for a Family of Four with Cosmos costs over 80 Euros. They are making a profit of 50 Euros per family of 4 on this trip as you can get your family in for circa 30 Euros using the bus which stops outside which takes you there for 1 Euro and takes 20 minutes. If Cosmos can charge you for anything extra they will, 20 Euros each for looking kids in the evening, charges for Face Painting, Chocolote chaos days, hair braiding, going for an ice cream, it goes on and on. I was friendly with one rep who said that they know the trips are a rip off, but they are pushed to sell them anyway. I don't mind paying slightly over the odds for something, but making over 100% profit is ridiculous.

A number of other couples made complaints about the Cosmos ran Menorcan Delights trips, saying that they saw little of Menorca, and were just taken around commercial retail outlets to buy leather and cheese etc.

In conclusion to the hotel group: Sort out the pool problem and find more regular professional entertainment. Your staff are excellent. Oh.... and stop letting 10 year olds shoot air rifles with the adults!

To Cosmos, you are a bunch of wide boys.

My wife and I and our 5 year old daughter have just returned from this hotel. We had a fantastic time. The hotel was spotless and the food and drink was excellent. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The entertainment was also excellent but we did feel it was aimed more towards the children, which was fine because it kept our daughter happy. If you haven't got a sense of humour this isn't the holiday for you because the entertainment staff were a scream. There is a wide range of activities including football, tennis, table tennis, wall climbing, cliff diving, roller blading, french boules etc etc. I also tried the scuba diving in the pool and then went out into the sea - great fun although it did cost 55 euros, but would definitely recommend this. Without a doubt would recommend this hotel to families with young children. Didn't want to come home!!
