| said: Stayed for 7 nights tacked onto the end of our 6 night safari - needed the rest.
Arrived at 10pm, tired and grubby. Had upgraded from a standard to a superior room and on arrival had been allocated a spacious superior family room with double and single bed - no idea why as there was only me and hubby. Had patio with 2 sun beds and view of the sea and gardens (room 404).
Decor OK but furnishings VERY tired and shabby, wood framed beds extremely creaky, park bench with mattress! HARD. Bathroom VERY tatty, definitely well past it's sell by date. Peach colour with bidet, fixed shower (in the bath) about as effective as a watering can. Additional shower connected to bath taps miles more powerful but nowhere to hang the head up so you had to hold it. Water barely lukewarm both that night and again first thing next morning and everything a trifle on the mouldy side.
Went back to reception as this room was not my idea of 'first class' and 'luxurious' as stated by Kuoni and hotel website. Agreed to spend first night there as it was nearly 11pm, moved in the morning to a MUCH more agreeable room. Still superior (room 307) but miles more modern furnishings and fittings, spacious with king size bed, rattan sofa, coffee table and chair, plenty of wardrobe space and tea/coffee making facility. Patio outside with 2 sun loungers and table, no 'padding' on them though so not hugely comfy. Bathroom the same as previous room but looked a little less 'mouldy' and less shabby. Never needed to add cold water to any of my showers although it was better than lukewarm after I'd mentioned it.
Hotel is described as undergoing continued renovation, assume that means refurb is ongoing so not all rooms done (although all room exteriors and public areas/bars/restaurants/pool clearly have been) - seems likely that our first room was non-refurb & the second a refurb. Would advise that if your room is scruffy, complain POLITELY to reception. Altogether very nice and in my opinion probably IS in general 1st class, by Kenyan standards anyway.
Hotel complex is spread over several 2 storey buildings (8 I think) each with total of 20 rooms each, ground floor are Superior, larger with patio and loungers, Standard are smaller all on 1st floor with small balcony and chairs. Also some individual deluxe cottages/suites. Everything in thatched style, gardens beautiful and well maintained, all in all an extremely nice looking environment, although as I'm geographically dyslexic I kept getting lost, good job the grounds arent so big!
Staff: VERY friendly and polite, you will be greeted every time you pass someone.
Food: themed evenings and plenty of choice on AI or H/B usually a combination of waiter service and buffet. Other eating options there if you want to pay.
Pool area: clean and tidy, 2 places 'on' the beach although separate from the public as beachboys a right pain, not intimidating but like flies constantly buzzing round! Towels free. If you bung one of the pool staff ks100 on the first day and thereafter every couple of days you'll most likely find they'll 'reserve' the same beds for you every morning.
Bars/snacks: couple of bars and snack eating places plus some very nice under cover places to relax and read. Reasonable service round the pool.
Afternoon tea/coffee: served free from 4pm by the pool, can buy slices of cake the size of a housebrick for £1 (or crepes).
Entertainment: plenty of pool activities, darts, table tennis, pool etc. Evening entertainment varied, acrobats pretty good, singers, dancers etc. Not so bad really.
Location: Diani beach on the south coast in Ukunda. Not all that much round there to do during the day unless boat/diving/snorkelling.
Day trips are all out Mombasa way so takes about 45 mins to get there and involves a short ferry crossing. As we like to go out and about sightseeing I'd probably opt for the north coast next time otherwise I'd definitely stay there again.......but only in a refurbed room!
