| said: The Castell Playa is a very large hotel, which dominates the sky line of Arenal D'en castell.
It was built in the 70's and is showing its age in places. However it is a very good hotel and nothing was too much trouble for the waiters or maids.
There were no strange smells around the hotel as reported by some reviewers.
The drinks package was very good and saved us a fortune as drinks are expensive in the hotel.
Do book a sea view room as they are quite cheap and have a fabulous view of the sea and the resort.
The pool area was adequate for the number of people stopping in the hotel but you had to get a sunbed by 9.00am if you wanted a good spot.

The staff were very helpful and always smiling.
Food was lovely, lots to choose from and the all inclusive drinks package was well worth it.
One thing we did not no about till we got there was evening meal, men had to were trousers and everyone was dressed up. Whcih we read nothing about before we went, so did not take a lot of evening wear, but maneged it ok, so take enough clothes for day wear and evening wear.
Apart from that great holiday and would defiantly go back again.

| said: The Hotel Castell Playa is one of our favorites. We have visited here for the last seven years.
Hotel is very clean. The smell in reception which was mentioned in a previous review has been seen to. there was no sign of any smell at all.
The food is excellent. This year there were new chefs and the food was even better still. There was different themed nights eg. Carribean night, Mexican, Italian even Chinese, as well as all the wonderful roasts. There is really everything to suit everyone even if you are a fussy eater!
The location of the hotel is on top of a slight incline. The beach can be reached either by walking via a lot of steps or you can use the coutesy bus if you are a little less unable.
The staff are very friendly and we have no problem conversing with them, only a couple don't speak good English but we get our point accross in the end.
Entertainment in the hotel has always been very good.
We usually go for a walk after dinner, then visit the irish bar and Australian bar then go back to the hotel for the nights entertainment, but if you need to get a good seat you need to be there a bit earlier.
As always we had a great time and met some nice people, even some who, like us visit the same time
every year.
So now we are going to book this hotel again for next year...

| said: The hotel is a little dated, brown marble everywhere and there is sometimes a funny fusty drain like smell in the reception area. The place is kept very clean by an army of cleaners who like the bar staff and restaurant staff work very long hours. We up graded to the drinks package for about 10 euros each per day, well worth it, you get a kettle and coffee etc in your room and all local drinks, water tea coffee etc are included. We thought it well worth it , a bottle of wine at night is 6 euros. The rooms were clean and the sea views are worth paying for, especially at night if there's a storm in the area, the Bay is lit up for miles.
We attended the welcome meeting but like many others forgot and about the farewell meeting, ( it was held on a Sunday, we didn't go home til Wednesday ! )We have to admit to getting just a little fed up of being asked to " tick the excellent box " on the survey going when we had only just met the reps 5 Min's earlier ! They only seemed interested in flogging over priced trips, the cheapest one was to Mahon and markets for 19 euros, the local bus fare is wait for it , 1.85 euros, we did not hear of anyone booking a trip out. The reps were too busy talking amongst themselves or to their little band of favourites who were always on the front row so to speak ( if you were there the same week as us you know who we mean )One person in particular actually SULKED when he wasn't picked for the quiz team and spent the night in the downstairs bar !!
The entertainment varied, Abba were pretty good, Blues brothers OK but a couple of nights we went out. The bar staff were really hard working, the drinks were always right, please don't forget the occasional tip , even if you have up graded, its a hard job.
The food was pretty good, always hot and plenty of choice . Lovely roasts , the puddings were mainly mousse type or sponge with syrup on.

| said: Cleanliness:
Polite and efficient check in with the services of a Porter to take your cases to your room. The room could not be faulted for comfort or cleanliness and the maid service proved excellent. Towels changed every day and, as a bonus, arranged as works of art. Although hotel was spotless, public area furnishings looked rather ‘tired’.
Location:
Arenal D'en Castell is a really picturesque location. The views from the hotel situated on a hill overlooking the bay are fantastic which more than make up for the climb back up via steps from the beach. However, cardiac hill it isn't and for those of us who don’t like to walk the hotel provides a mini bus service that is excellent, running every 30 min throughout the day.
The hotel pool area felt cramped and oversubscribed when looking for a sun bed. All sunbeds appeared to be ‘Reserved’ for the occupation of a towel and a paperback as no ‘body’ appeared until late into the afternoon. Sun bed hire on the beach was expensive (15 Euros for two beds and an umbrella per day).
Staff:
Staff were very friendly and always helpful. Their knowledge of the hotel and surrounding area was excellent with a willingness to assist in any request, a refreshing change.
Food:
The food was excellent with plenty to choose from freshly made omelette's, pancakes and scrambled eggs for breakfast and numerous varieties of fresh pasta for dinner. The cold buffet was always attractively displayed with plenty of variety Most evenings was ‘Theme Night’ when particular emphasis was placed on a particular dish or dishes. Favourite night was ‘pudding’ night and ‘seafood’ night, and ‘cheese’, and ‘fruit’ night and- you get the general idea!
Entertainment:
More akin to an 18 to30’s Holiday with abuse from a microphone that was constantly shouted at! The reps organisation for things to do in the pool area at various times each day was, for many, intrusive. French Boules, table tennis and darts were conducted in areas that had little impact on those enjoying the sunshine and tranquillity of a holiday without children shouting around and in the pool. However, the daily water polo match disrupted every one. If you were not being harangued to join in, you were subjected to being hit by the ball, finding yourself on the end of some childlike forfeit from one of the players and worst of all having to listen to an inane commentary for half an hour
However there was also some excellent entertainment in the evening from outside acts including tributes to the Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, The Four Tops and Abba.

My husband and I are in our forties ,most of the guests were over sixty.
Our room was a nice size and kept clean by the maid who came every day. Towels were changed every day, sheets every other day.
Even though it states not to reserve sunbeds we were woken before 7am by sunbeds being moved into position for their day by the pool. By 9am almost every sunbed had a towel laid out on it.
The restaurant was very busy. We tried different times to eat but there were always queues. The food was ok but nothing special. Desserts were almost the same every night ok if you love jelly, cake and mousse.
We hired a car from Miramar in the resort for a few days and visited some lovely places in Menorca, which I feel is the point of visiting somewhere and not sat round a pool allday. Thomsons excursions were expensive!!!!!
The beach in Arenal is really beautiful ,the sunbeds and umbrella are 15 euros a day, we bought a couple of lilos and spent the days sunbathing and swimming in the clear crystal blue sea,and you never had to get up before 7am to reserve a place.

The hotel staff are fantastic.
The hotel is on a hill and with lots of steps down to the beach but this was not a problem for us. The hotel provide free bus service down to the beach but we did not use this.
The hotel was sold to us as an adult only hotel, ie no one under the age of 16 is allowed in. There were several kids in the hotel from the age of 14 upwards and although they behaved in general we did get woken by a couple of them running up and down the corridors in the hotel.
I will be making a complaint to Thomson.

On arrival Hotel looked very impressive on top of the hill at night. The hotel appeared spotlessly clean.Efficient check in and porter took our cases up to our rooms so we could go and have the cold supper that was laid on for us as we'd missed dinner.
The rooms were very clean and spacious and were kept that way by the excellent cleaner. Had great view of pool/ evening entertainment area.
Although hotel was spotless I have to agree with other comments public area furnishings rather tired looking especially as this is a Gold hotel but couldn't fault anything else. Staff were very friendly and always helpful especially waiting staff.
We never really found a problem at either breakfast or dinner with queing. The food was all excellent breakfast and dinner and always hot and fresh, but you still heard the occassional complaints about Spanish food! They did try and cater for all tastes and we thought they did it very well.
We watched the entertainment most evenings from our balcony and although we thought the resident duo weren't brilliant the visiting entertainment was good.
Also all the reps were really good and always on hand should you need them.

We were half board and upgraded with the drinks option which was a very good deal.
The hotel was clean but needed new furniture in the lounge area's.
The food was very good, good selection, but the 2 bars where you could buy lunch had no choice everything you asked for was unavaliable, no choice for vegetarian which I am.
The location was fine as long as you are fit as it is up hill all the way, 50 steps down to street level.
You could not fault the staff in any way, they went out of there way to help you.
The entertainment was mixed but not too bad.
My real complaint was the Terrible smell when entering the hotel of sewage it was BAD whith no explenation from either staff or reps.

The food was good but shriveled hard bacon and long queues in the evening.
Located up a bit of a hill but there is a bus down to the beach which we didn't use. Looks out over the bay, great sea views.
Apart from maintainence staff everyone else was what you would expect from Thomson Gold.
Entertainment is personal but not as good as other Gold hotels.
We had two major problems with the room, sorted immediatly. Then lots of little ones, we either got towels or toiletries and visa versa. It took 5 days and an official complaint to make the toilet flush properly.
Then we returned one evening to find one of the bedside lamps in bits with the bulb on the bed. The shade was broken when we arrived but wasn't reported as it was the least of our problems.
The Champagne the Manager sent us would still not entice us back. Not up to Thomson Gold standards

| said: We had 10 days at this hotel. Hotel was clean and food was quite good. The only trouble being that the food was not hot enough.
One major problem on arrival was the stench of tobacco in our room. It took us days to get rid of the smell. Being on the 5th floor we could leave the balcony door open all day but the maid kept closing it. Now that Spain have this no smoking rule the entertainment hall is not at all smokie and quite pleasant to sit in but they need to now introduce some no smoking bedrooms. The Hotel is old but is still respectable.
Although on a hill the walk to the sea front/beach isn't nearly as bad as it is made out to be. Cardiac hill isn't really appropriate. The hotel mini bus is excellent, running every 30 mins all day except Tuesday, although we didn't use it. There isn't much to do in Arenal though. A very small resort. Just 2 bars (Irish & Australian) but both have entertainment.
The hotel entertainment wasn't bad. Quiz each afternoon at 4pm by the pool and water gym at 11am. Water polo at 3pm. French boules some days. Evening acts average. We hired a car for 3 days and saw most of the island.

| said: We stayed for a week from 10 May and had fantastic weather which really made the holiday.
We was a bit wary of the hotel being on a hill but when we got there we was pleasantly surprised that although on a hill you went up or down various levels.
The hotel was kept very clean but was a bit dated in areas. We had a sea view room which was better for us as you only got the sun in the morning and the room cooled down fro the evening. Although on the 1st floor we still had fantastic views. The room was carpeted so you did not hear people above you walking about.
The restaurant was clean and had plenty of variety. The only annoying part was that there was always a queue for the hot food (eggs, omelettes, meat, pasta) in the morning and evening. We went for the all inclusive package on the drinks (about £130 for two for one week) and you could have all the local drinks, soft drinks, tea, coffee and the house wine. It worked out cheap for us as we stayed mostly in the hotel of an evening (recovering from a foot operation). If you prefer to go out of an evening then I don't think it would be worth it.
The pool area was quite busy and there was those that would put their towels out at 6.00am and then go out for the morning! There were plenty of daytime activities but the reps did not pester you to join in.
The evening entertainment was okay. The reps would put on quizzes etc before the main shows which came on at 10.00. We saw a tribute to Abba, Blues Brothers and a Elvis Tribute which were all good. All the entertainment finished at 12.00 and the hotel was very quite.
We had a fantastic week with just one regret that we forgot our driving licence so we could see more of the Island.

The food is very well presented, the trays are frequently changed even up to the end of the session ensuring the food was always hot and fresh.
The choice was outstanding all be it not so good for vegetarians, but we never went hungry.Breakfast choice was excelent the only problem being the toaster the bread had to be put through at least 3 times if you wanted anything more than hot bread.
There are fantastic views from the hotel over the bay which more than makes up for the climb back up from the beach. There are some lovely walks you can do accross the heathland, one to Son Parc and one to Na Macaret well worth the effort. There are some nice bars over looking the beach.
Hotel staff were very friendly and could not do enough for you.
Entertainment was better than most hotels, however the lounge was so smokey that we only saw one act as the smoke made it to uncomfortable for us non smokers. Better extraction would have helped.
All in all a very nice hotel, a bit dated but the soundproofing in the rooms was very good unlike some modern hotels. We would definatly return to this hotel.

Hhotel very clean, maid did a fab job everyday, food was out of this world if Id have tried everything I would have exploded, the choice is amazing.
The staff are brilliant and extremely helpful, everything is top class a stark difference to some other hotels we,ve stayed in in the past.
Entertainment we thought was going to be cheesy but the acts were fantastic, the temptations blew me away. Only moan is not enough no smoking areas and the small area there is, still had smokers polluting our lungs which is very unfair the rooms massive too, but if you want a good veiw get your handbag on your chair early as theres alot of pillars in the way.
Still doesnt spoil the enjoyment. We would definitely visit again,it was fab. Read the hotel guest book some of the comments are hilarious.

| said: The hotel is right at the highest point of the resort, (I don't think they'd be allowed to build a monster like it nowadays!). This means that the views are fantastic - especially if you've got a sea view. You can see right across the bay, and also over the resort, and the little villas nearby where there's always something going on. And you can see the little land train chugging by every hour. The sea view side gets the morning sun, but in the afternoon it's shady so it was great to sit on the balcony and watch the world go by before the evening meal.
The downside of this is that it IS a long way to the beach. Down 2 shortish streets, then about 150 steps!!!!! Not all in one go, but several sections. it is extremely pretty but was a nightmare in the midsummer heat (especially as I'm not too fit). However the hotel does run an hourly minibus service to/from the beach which is good (and the driver always checks the beach to make sure he hasn't left any guests behind!)
The hotel is a bit old-fashioned...because it is old!!! and built in a very stark square design, not all pretty-pretty like modern ones. But the rooms are fine, and all the staff are brilliant.
The food was excellent we thought, although there is only one counter for the hot food, so there can be queues at peak times. Also the "show counter" is at the far end of the buffet, so we missed some of the specials. (they have things like special cheeses, cold meats, sweets, fish/shellfish, Menorcan dishes etc. different every night. And being Thomson Gold, most ladies liked to wear something a bit smarter for the evening meal and not just bowl up in T-shirts and shorts! (I always like that part of things - makes a nice break from doing the cooking!)
The lifts were a bit of a pain - there are 3 but they seem to have a very strange programme of stopping at the floors. Though to be fair, the hotel did sometimes have a porter type person on duty to keep the lifts on call to the ground floor! which was helpful.
You can get prepaid drinks wristbands, for £10 a day I think. Lots of people thought these were great but we didn't bother because we don't stay in by the pool every day, and had a kettle in our room for hot drinks. So the water/wine with the evening meal and a jug of sangria in the evening didn't come to £10 each!!!
The pool area is very pretty with trees and flowers. There is the usual hoo-ha about sunbeds if you don't decide to go until halfway through the morning, but we always got a spot. Don't like the poolside sunny ones anyway, prefer to be under the trees! The pool was a bit on the small side we thought, at least it looks big, but has a "walk-in" slope at each end, so the actual deep swimming part isn't all that big. But it was big enough and never got all that crowded anyway.
There is entertainment every night, usually outside by the pool if the weather is fine. We saw tributes to Rod Stewart, the Temptations, a Soul thing, several comedians (only one we didn't like), a Riverdance thing and of course the rep shows which if you have got to know the reps during your stay, was very good. They are a great bunch.
We went on a couple of trips, one was the "Secrets of Menorca" it's not cheap at €99, but if you are interested in history it is great. It was a minibus tour that took you round an old fort near Mahon, (which has got an enormous cannon, and where they filmed some of the Hornblower TV series), then to a cheese dairy with cheese and wine tasting, then a 5 course meal in a beautiful old manor house in the country. Then to the north coast where the Romans first landed on Menorca, and there's a new visitor centre nearby. Our guide Sonja was excellent.

| said: We booked a late 'Allocation on arrival' holiday, and so did not know till we landed at Mahon airport, where we were going.
We really landed on our feet though! The Castell Playa is a lovely Thomson 'Gold' hotel (adults only) and the staff and reps are all very helpful and, for the most part, friendly.
The pool area is a bit on the small side, but is very well laid out with a nice pool and trees planted around one end, which provide additional shade if you want it. The reps organised things to do in the pool area at various times each day, such as French Boules, a quiz, water polo etc. To one side of the pool is the outside entertainment area.
We enjoyed almost all of the entertainment, especially the Reps show on the Saturday night, which was brilliant. Some nights we saw comedians (Mr Gutbuster was fantastic)and other nights there were groups, such as a Soul group, a Queen Tribute band and a troupe performing a 'Lord of the dance' tribute.
The food was always good and my wife particularly enjoyed the many different sweets on offer! In the pool area is a small Restaurant/BBQ building, where you can get reasonably priced meals at lunchtime, such as burger & chips, Pizzas etc.
Drinks are a bit expensive, but as we were going out and about a lot, we decided against the all inclusive drinks option.
On the days we walked to the beach we hired an umbrella from reception, which was only 3 Euros for the day.
Room clean, with a fantastic sea view (Another bit of luck for us) and the air conditioning was very welcome at times.
We signed up for 3 of the Thomson excursions and our favourite was the 'Harbour delights' trip on a Catamarran in Mahon harbour.
Would definetly go there again. Highly recommended.

Best view we have ever had from any hotel room (sea view) and well worth the climb up hill (and the seaview supplement).
The evening entertainment was very good on the couple of occasions that we watched (always seemed a great variety of acts). Food was of a good standard, but was a bit repetative, ie chips most nights, pork and chicken often, but good standard regardless.
Found drinks to be expensive. Hired a car from Bettacar in the hotel - very reasonable.

We opted for the all-inclusive drinks deal, 13 euros each a day, and at 3.20 euros a pint it was a good saving.
We arrived early in the season, hotel had only opened on Monday we arrived Wednesday, staff were only just getting used to hotel but were very friendly.
The entertainment was some of the best we have had only one dodgy Elvis impersonator but the rest were great. Resident duo more than words (Kelly and William) kept us well entertained during our stay.
We did not pay for a seaview so we were at the back of the hotel, not a problems as we got the sun all afternoon, and we were entertained every evening by the bin men, not a problem, as they only took about 15 minutes to do their job.
The hill outside the hotel is called cardiac for a reason, this was the only down side as we like to go for a walk after evening meal, you still could, but better to change into flat shoes for the ladies.

The evening entertainment was better than we have experienced at other places over the years with vocal groups and the usual tribute artists.
Best bit about the hotel with being a Thomson Gold was of course no kids - great!
Pool area spoilt for us by only having regimentally laid out sunbeds and no chairs or loungers. If you didnt want to lie down and there was no shade area if you couldnt get a brolly.
Arenal itself is nice with a few different bars and cafes and a great beach. Would stay here again.

| said: A great Thomson GOLD hotel. Just spent a week here and it was excellent. Very peaceful, relaxing holiday. Had a standard room with seaview. If you like morning sun then pick a seaview room, if you like sun on your balcony in the afternoon / evening then go for a room with a poolview on the back of the hotel. Be aware though rooms on the back will also overlook the outside entertainments stage - great if you fancy watching the entertainment from your balcony - not so good if you fancy a quiet early night. This last week ( end of May ) entertainments in the evening were all held inside in the upstairs bar / entertainment area rather than outside anyway.
Resort was really quiet in the evening - come 11.30pm when the outside entertainment at the other large hotel in Arenal finished it was almost silent. Relatively good sound insulation in the rooms meant not a lot was heard from within the hotel, beds were very comfortable so some excellent nights sleep. Our standard room was directly over the restaurant which initially worried us - needlessly it turns out as we didn't hear a thing from it.
Food was good quality. The cold buffet though lacked much variety over the week. Each night a speciality table was changed. Favourite night was "puddings" night, least favourite was "sliced cold sausages" night! In between was seafood, cheese, and fruit nights that I remember. Hot buffet always delicious.
Pool area felt a little cramped when filled though terraces do extend up a couple of levels with more sunbathing space. I was amazed when getting up early on the last day to get flight home to find towels already out on the best sunbeds before 7am - and with only Brits in the hotel the Germans couldn't be blamed for it!
Hotel is "King of the Hill" in Arenal so the walk down to the beach is all sloping roads or steps. Roads though were almost empty, and the steps went past the shops so walk was pleasant enough and didn't feel a chore.
Arenal may be relatively small and quiet but it's not lacking for any necessities. There may only be one road in and out - but that means no through traffic so very peaceful. There are atleast 5 supermarkets easily walked to in Arenal. Cafe's and bars serving food atleast twenty or more, plus various other shops and giftshops dotted about.
Area is great for walking. It's a pleasure to be able to walk to either of the neighbouring bays via clifftop paths. The Thomson Gold Local Interest Rep will take you on these walks, but they are easy enough to find for yourself.
Loved Menorca, loved Arenal d'en Castell. From the moment we arrived at Mahon airport everyone was very helpful and friendy. Very relaxed holiday.
If you've read other reviews on here mentioning the carpets then worry not. Main starcase is now marble steps - the stair carpet has been removed completely!!

We agree that the hotel is rated correctly as a three star but that said it was presentable and immaculately clean in private and public areas.
Bedrooms could do with some new furnishings, appearing a bit tired but still serviceable.
We had exceptionally warm weather for October but despite this the Air Con was not used as it runs only in July and August.
As other posts here, we took the all inclusive drinks option on day one at £10 a day each. We would recommend it to anyone but under No Circumstances remove your wristbands - as my Wife was told, 'This can never happen!'
Food was well presented and of excellent quality even if the dining room was a bit cramped.
Overall a thoroughly enjoyable holiday was had by our friends and us.

Clean rooms (we always upgrade to a superior room) friendly staff, clean areas around the pool and staff always on hand to bring drinks etc. to your sun lounger!
Food always good, always hot, there is a a la carte restaurant available for everyone on at least one evening of each week you stay.
Entertainment is up to the usual Thomson standard.
Go try and enjoy!

we had a safe but would have preferred it to be in the room instead of in reception and also a lot bigger. also the tv didn't have many channels in english unless you like watching the news all the time.
food was plentiful, you could normally find something to eat each time and we took advantage of the a la carte which was very civilised.
thoroughly enjoyed the waiter service in all the bars, we only spent a couple of nights in the pool area in the evening before we were moved in doors.

Our only problem was with ants, 3 times we were overrun with them although when I reported it it was dealt with only for them to return, also our room was not up to standard as we paid for premier accommodation. Part of the wall inside the room where the light switch was crumbling.
When we asked to be moved they had nothing else to offer.
Apart from the room not being up to scratch, we couldn't fault anything else.

| said: My Husband and I went on a 'Late Deal' to the Castell Playa and were very happy. The Hotel was very clean and we found all of the staff friendly. Yes the carpets on the stairs and in the rooms need replacing but with food of that quality a little barethread carpet could be overlooked.
We took up the All Inclusive Drinks package which we found well worth it - we were a little miffed though that the bracelets had to be be given up at 12pm on the day of departure as we didn't leave the Hotel until 8pm that night. The other thing we found a bit annoying was that the safe deposit boxes are in Reception and not in the Room - that wasn't explained and we spent over half an hour searching until it clicked!
We thought the entertainment was OK - if there was something we thought a little 'dodgy' we just had a few more drinks and it suddenly got better!
All in all we would definitely go back.

| said: On arrival, you are greated with pleasent smiling receptionist's, who do everything in their power to make signing in a smooth operation.
You have to leave your passports on arrival for ID checks, but you will get them back within the hour.
Some carpets could do with replacing on the first staircase, as they are becoming a little worn.
Make sure you ask about the Inclusive Drinks Package. It will cost you 143.00 Euros each for 10 days, but is well worth it. (We drunk that in 3 days)
Rooms are clean & tidy and towels are changed each day, even though we didn't leave them in the bath to be changed. Our room did have an ANT problem, but was quickly resolved and we never saw another one again during our stay.
The food was excellent:
Breakfast - you will be overwhelmed with the choice on offer, make sure you try the omelette - made to order as you wait.
Dinner - what can I say, but fantasic choice. I defy anyone to say they were not impressed. Make sure you take up the offer of the a-la-carte menu, as you are entitled to 1 each 7 days of your stay.
The hill to & from the beach will keep you fit or you can be lazy and take the little train or the hotel provides a bus service.
Staff were very helpful throughout our stay - with Sonia being our favourite.
Mikey, Liz etc.. were very up for all the events during the day & evening. Kelly & William (More Than Words) were excellent as the resident duo. Always made me laugh each evening.

The reps and team were very friendly and acted in a very proffesional manner. Although the team offered activities during the day you were never pestered to take part. You could relax with out feeling pressured into doing any of the activities.
In the evening you had the resident band More than Words, Kelly and William, Kelly being the main vocalist, she has a fantastic voice and her reportoire of songs is endless, they are both very entertaining. Also there were different acts bought into the Hotel of which we both enjoyed.

| said: I have just returned from a great 2 weeks at the castell playa. The entertainment team, the gold reps and the hotel staff made this holiday special. Nothing was too much trouble.
Despite what has been said in the past I believe the hotel deserves its three star status. Ok some of the carpet was frayed at the edges but the rooms were always cleaned to a good standard and the communal areas were spotless. The food was just what you would expect from a Thomson’s Gold and the Fiesta drinks option is a must. For an outlay of about 13 euro a day you can drink from 10am until 12pm any local drinks, coffee, soft drinks and water. I would have spent this in water during the day by the pool so everything else was a bonus.
Whatever I write will not do justice to the effort all the staff put in but I will mention a few of them.
Mikey, the entertainment leader is a star in the making. Singing, dancing and being a general friend to the guests, he is made for the job. The best Thomson’s host I have ever met.
Liz, assisted Mikey throughout the day with the entertainment and they made a great team. This was her first year although you would not believe it.
Gemma the technician was perfectly capable as doubling up as a host for the poolside games.
The Thomson’s reps joined in the games and we all had great fun. The water polo, guests against the reps is a highlight although next time I must remember the reps are about half my age and much fitter. We still beat them though.
Also joining in the games was Kelly of the resident duo More Than Words. Kelly and William make a great double act with Kelly’s strong voice and Williams’s guitar and quick wit. I look forward to seeing them again.
As for the hotel staff they were all friendly and helpful except for one comment from a receptionist that the mini-bar in the room was for storing drinks only and not to keep them cool.
Special mention must go to Monica, the waitress with the lovely smile and Sonia our favourite barmaid.
Thanks for a great holiday.

I would defy anyone to come away from here hungry. The location of the hotel is as the brochure says at the top of a hill, therefore quite windy, but in 80 degree heat it is welcome. There are a lot of steps to the beach but there are slopes for those with pushchairs etc, but quite steep. The hotel staff were very friendly and polite and the Thomson entertainment was brilliant particularly the Titanic sketch which was better than Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. Also watch out for Thomson rep Stuart's impression of a drunk. Marvellous! Also special mention to a very efficient waitress called Monica who seems to be working all hours God sends. She was always smiling. Well done everyone.

| said: The hotel was clean and air conditioned but not luxurious. A superior room is a must as the alternative is a room facing the back of the hotel which means enforced listening to the evening entertainment. This entertainment is of a low standard but not compulsory! The food was of a reasonable standard and was always fresh, however, it is VERY british oriented. Don't go expecting a continental dining experience. I found the waiting staff unfriendly at best. Most customers in the hotel were middle aged.

the hotel is very good but it does need work doing to it the paint on our patio ceiling was peeling of and the carpets on the stairs are thread bear.a nice point is the air conditioning stayed on all through the day&night in the bedroom which was a god send as it was so hot!
the standard of food was very good the putting together of the menus could have been thought through a bit better.
the staff in all departments are very freindly and it was generally easy to get served in the restaraunt and the pool although being the height of the season the hotel was full at night when the entertainment was on that there was not enough waiters.
take up the option of the all inclusive drinks we did and really enjoyed it includes all local beer and spirits tea coffee water and wine at your table.
it was dissapointing to that at an all british hotel people going down at silly times to put towels on sunbeds and they moan about the germans!.
the entertainment was the biggest disapointment two comics(told the same jokes diferent delivery)a german george michael and german beetles and what country abba were from i dont know good ones elvis, four tops, the flammenco show and the two girls dressed in white.if these are of the cruise ships i will not bother.all in all a great hotel great staff and food but entertainment and the fight for the sun beds the bad points.
the resident duo were a bit naff the woman could sing but the bloke murdered every song he sung and the songs and jokes were the same the second week as the first.the entertainment the reps put on was quite good but mikey well he was so cheesey you could spread him on toast.
i could right more but i would be here all day

Entertainment was good but not our particular choice, but others seemed to enjoy it
The unfortunate thing was that my Wife is Vegitarian and despite assurances that Vegitarians where well catered for this was not the case, unless they are prepared to live on Salad for the whole time. Some dishes labelled as Vegitarian clearly where not - most Vegitarians don't eat fish.
The hotel offers an all inclusive drinks package - my advice sign up on checkin - it is great value for money

Our room was at the back overlooking the pool and refuse bin area, and every morning at approximately 0130 we were awakened by the noise of refuse containers full of bottles being emptied into a refuse lorry this generally lasted about 10-15 minutes, which for some people is enough to ruin a nights sleep, and it certainly took the edge of our holiday, it would appear ( according to the Thompson rep ) that little can be done as it is entirely at the discretion of the local council when the bins are emptied. Although one would think that an island that relies on Tourism for its livelyhood would do something to help it tourist to a good nignt sleep.
Some 50% of the rooms are at the back.

| said: We went Thomson Gold (1st Time) and very much enjoyed our & 7 day stay.
The hotel is very clean and comfortable and the hotel staff were very pleasant/friendly,efficient,helpful and obviously very well trained-a credit to the hotel management.
We were impressed with the way the bar staff (both indoor and outdoor) worked hard to provide an efficient service and kept all areas clean and tidy at all times.
The restaurant was excellent in all aspects, food quality, choice, variety, presentation and again the staff were continually working to keep it clean and tidy.
We stayed on the second floor and found that the 3 lifts worked very well and we never had to wait very long for a lift even though I think the hotel was full.
We felt that the sea view rooms were worth the additional payment but the 'non sea view' rooms would not be dissapointing-giving a view over the pool and the countryside with afternoon and evening sunshine.
The 'All Inclusive Drinks Package'is available but does not seem to be actively promoted and we had to ask about it at reception (181 Euros/couple/week-June 04)
I would suggest the potential savings of this deal need to be carefully considered if you away from the hotel for most of some days-perhaps with a hire car or on trips.
The Thomson Reps were very enthusiastic and provided a daytime programme of simple games etc but there was no pressure to participate.
The evening entertainment was very good with a resident M/F vocal duo providing popular music and also with an additional professional entertainer most evenings.
The pool area was OK but not spacious and plenty of sunbeds.

| said: We have just returned from oour holiday at the Castell Playa.
The food and service in the dining room was first class.
We never had any trouble finding a table.
We used to go down late for both meals....9.45am for breakfast and 8.45pm for evening meal and you were never rushed. Some nights people were still coming in for evening meal way past 9.00pm and they were still allowed in and not rushed.
We do not nornally like hotel entertainment but the standard was very high, in particular the tributes to The Platters as well as the Megastars (George Michael and Freddie Mercury). The comedian was hilarious and the two "Gold" entertainers Lee and Jen were excellent.
The best thing for us was that we took up the "Optional Drinks Plan" for 175 euros (12.5 euros per person per day) for the week......this worked at at less than £18 for the two of us each day and included all soft drinks and water, tea and coffee, beer, brandy, mixers e.g gin and tonic etc, wine (including with the evening meal) sangria and champagne......brilliant.
The trips organised by Thomson were fairly good but expensive......we did the morning trip to Cuitadella and the Harbour Delights evening cruise in Mahon but paid over £85 for the priveledge......... we met another couple on both trips and we woorked out that we could have shared a taxi to both places and booked the cruise ourselves for well under half what we had paid.
Arenal D'en Castell is a really nice place but to be fair when we were there it was often too hot to go anywhere although we did walk to both Son Park and Macaret.
The sunbeds hire on the beach was very expesive (we were told) but it was easy enough to get beds and umbrellas at the hotel.
All in all a fantastic holiday and would recommend the hotel to anyone.

Facilities were brilliant and couldn;t be beaten. Hotel rooms were of high standard with air con, tv, fridge etc. Our room was at back and overlooked pool and countryside - glad we didn't pay extra for sea view as our room had sun all afternoon and evening and we had no noise problems at all.
Food was lovely, excellent choice and more often than not food was hot. Evening entertainment was good, some shows better than others - the comedian was excellent!
About 3 min walk to resort centre downhill and further 5 mins to the excellent beach with white sand and turquise sea. However there was a regular mini buss, free from hotel 6 days a week - very worthwhile going back in mini bus as very hot to be climbing steep hills.
Resort very quiet and we hired car for week to explore Island - would definately recommend.

Lovely beach clean azure sea, hired a car for 3 days from the hotel more than adequate to see everything only a small island but do not miss Mont Torro fantastic views, the steps from the beach could be a problem for the less agile to us just like being at home not steps but a steep climb to our local pub and shop ( we live in the Yorkshire Dales) would love to go back again regards Gill

| said: This was a first class hotel. Rooms were very clean and tidy and kept so all week by the cleaners. Half board breakfast and dinner buffets were excellent with plenty of choice all week. The dining room was very clean and the waiters/waitresses all very friendly and helpful.
You have the choice of 1 A La Carte meal per week if you wish. The swimming pool area had plenty of sunbeds and despite of a rush to get the early sun beds, the complete area is out of the shade by late morning and there was always spare sunbeds available. The temperature in the last week of May reached 80 degrees. But drinks are always available from a choice of bars within the hotel. The poolside bar has waiter service all day.
The only negative aspects for us were that the mattresses seemed new and were made from a very tough foam. Not overly comfortable. Also the rooms were quite stuffy even in May and the air conditioning system was fairly noisy, so either way we found it difficult to sleep at times.
The hotel is excellently situated in a resort which is small but not too small with a few bars, restaurants (as if you really need restaurants after those buffets!), Spar supermarkets and gift shops.
The staff at the hotel all work very hard and are always willing to help. There are even staff to open lift doors for you!
A nearby bus stop will take you to Mahon the capital. But services are limited and there was one almighty scramble in Mahon on the way back, even in May! I suggest a taxi or hire car although the bus was cheap and very clean.
Would definately return.
