| said: well after a long flight you have to fill in an immigration form which seems to take ages and then pay 10 dollars to get in the country. Don't bother with the porters at the airport the coaches are only ten feet away. It's fifteen minutes from the airport.
At hotel check-in went smoothly. If you're not completely happy with your room ask for a change. The food is very bland and the same day in day out. Not enough bars and the beer and cocktails are very weak and the toilets are ten minutes away from the bar.
Also keep a watch on your belongings, your clothes they disappear. They have stalls 3 or 4 times aweek so you get harassed going to the bar. When it rains there is no shelter so you end up staying in your room and there is no fridge which you miss. It's no fun drinking warm water.

| said: We read the reviews on this hotel and resort before going and thought that everybody couldnt be wrong??. Mmmm well we found out different.
Hotel is clean and all rooms cleaned every day with fresh soft towels and bedding changed. But the only negative comments is the noise from 9am to 8pm every day with the staff shouting with pool games around the pool and then also on the beach.
It is butlins in the sun and like club 18/30. If you want a relaxing holiday then steer very clear of this hotel. It is the largest complex we have ever stayed in and is a definite never again.
Food is the same every day, apart from eggs at breakfast you can have goat stew with broccoli and cauliflower with boiled spuds thats for breakfast??
Then the same for lunch and again at dinner apart from chicken thighs and rice,or pasta. Lunch time you can use the snack places but they never wipe a table in between people leaving it for the next, just flip off the mess with a serviete, not very clean in them places.
Drinks are plentiful as much as you can drink but no fear of a drunken night on the all iclusive its so weak its untrue, different when you go to the cash bars though ! Most couples have had enough after 1 week. But thats only our report on the resort. But be aware. No peace here for you. Going outside was safe and we just had to get out of there at times.
BUT then you get pestered from shop owners to go in to their shops to the extent that you just then dont even want to go out again!!
To top that the hotel have the stall holders in the hotel grounds about 3-4 times a week and so then you are pestered as you try to casulaly relax for a walk or get to bar to bar they are on at you.
This was not an enjoyable place to go to and we for one would not recomend it if its a peaceful tranquill time you are after, I wish we had never gone.

hotel staff were all kind and always had a smile on there face and fell over to help you.

| said: We visited the hotel as a young, teenage couple on our 1st holiday together. We booked a late deal for our 1st anniversary together and wanted to go quite cheap, paying just £350 each, for the price we payed we would definatley recommend this hotel!
It was very warm, 35 degrees every day and very humid, so beware girls with frizzy hair! This was welcome however, coming from a cold, wet england! Remember to pack sunblock even if you are a tan addict like me, i dont burn easily, and peeled, and the suncream is very expensive in the hotel.
The room was adaquate and clean, but nothing more. Some reveiws have said the hotel was dated, but i dont agree, it wasnt luxurious, but definatly lived up to its 3 star plus.
The food was also adequte but nothing more, and preperation appeared clean. I'm a fussy eater and a lot of dishes there are local ie, mushed banana wraped in leaves?! but this is expected in a foreign country. There was always at least one dish I would eat though, pancakes for brakefast, lasagne, bolognase for tea/dinner. With bread to fill me up. If like my boyfriend, you prefer burgers and chips, at around 1pm the seafood resteraunt on the beach opens up to a buffet providing this! Unfortunatly we only found this on the last day we wish we had found this earlier as it was yummy! Drinks were great, my boyfriend doesn't drink and loved the fruit punch, I just added a bit of rum to make it even better!
Staff service was great, always willing to help, apart from a miserable waiter in the seafood restaurant, but no problems there!
We prefered to sunbathe round the 3 beautiful jacuzzi areas, which had dappled shaded areas but sun teraces also, the cold jacuzis were a god send!
The beach was also lovely with white/golden sand and palm trees. We prefered the marina beach side. The only complaint I would have is the sun beds were old and sunken, which privided uncomfortable sunbathing if you didnt score a newer one! most of these however were round the pool (which is also clean and surrounded by wel kept gardens!)
The entertainment was good, throughout the day and night, with fun games led by the cheerful kiko team with the likes of volleyball, salsa and games, and great shows on a night which comsisted of great dancing and costumes and on a sunday night, a quiz which includes vulunteers from the adience. These start at half 9 and continue for an hour, and after there is a disco bar on the beach side, which you have to pay to get into and for your drinks. We didn't attend this, as we were too tired! but were told it was ok, but the music was a bit iffy!
We attended two trips in the week we were there, which we both agreed made the holiday and provided great full days out. The first was pardise island which included a long coach journey (2hrs)and an early start (6:40am) but was nice as we picked up people from othr hotels, which provided a nice tour around the other hotels and puertoplata. We then went onto punta rosa, a small idilic beach (gorgeous) which looked like a picture postcard, after offroading in a 54 seater coach! we then boarded speedboats which took us over to paradise island with was a small mound of white sand in the middle of a shallow turquoise lagoon. This was paradise. They provided sandwiches drinks and fruit out of a small shack, which were all lovely, snokelling was also available, which we were told was amazing. the boat ride back was through the mangroves and back to punta rosa where we had a beautiful lunch(with burgers, pasta and hotdogs!) overlooking the idillic beach. this trip cost around £85 for the both of us but well, well worth it! Would highly recommend this!
Also the outback safari, which was also brill! in a big 20 seater jeep, we explored the county side seeing how the real dominican people live, which is so suprising, swam in the river, visited a plantation and tried the wonderful fruit that was locally grown there, and also went body boarding at caberetta beach, which was soooo much fun in the warm sea! We also had lunch and went on a river safari. The tour guide (jr.) was hilarious and fun, had a rite laugh all day! This was also around the same price.
Both trips are highly reccommended, are a full day, and include lunch and unlimited drinks. I would recommend them, both even more to young couples like us, who are itching for something to do.

| said: Just returned from Casa Marina Reef and had a great time.
Ok, down to the nitty gritty. First the bad points:-
1) There is nowhere "comfortable" to go when it rains. There are a few seats around the reef bar and beach bar which can be pulled under the roof of the bars, but the site really needs somewhere with a bar, seats and tables which is under cover when raining. You can sit in the amphitheatre if you like, but there is no bar (except after 9 pm) or tables inside, and the bars are a fair way away if you do want a drink.
2) The rooms are in long blocks and you can hear everything going on outside in the coridoors. This isn't too bad during the day, but at night it got to be a real pain when people were coming back to the rooms at all times during the night. I was woken up on many occasions as I am a bit of a light sleeper.
3) The flight was not good at all. We flew with Thomas Cook and, even though the plane was brand new, we were packed in like sardines - 9 people across in 3 groups of 3 seats and my knees were touching the seat in front of me even when I was sat right back in my seat. Not impressed at all. On the way back there were more than 40 seats whose TV screens did not work (luckily mine wasn't one of them, although my wife's was) so it was a pretty boring flight for them. My wife managed to plug into my headphone socket as well as me and she watched my screen so she wasn't too bad.
These are about the only bad points I can think of. Now for the good stuff :o)
LOCATION - Great. Right on the beach with a great view over Sosua Bay. Only a stone's throw away from the town centre.
CHECK-IN - Very efficient and helpful front desk staff. The only "problem" was that they would not allow us to have 2 room keys. In the end it didn't really matter though as when we were apart and wanted to get into the room, we just had to ask for a temporary key which let us in. These only worked once but did the job.
ROOMS - Functional, no great luxury, but fine for what we needed.
FOOD - Good. Not a massive choice but we always found something suitable and it was always good. Speciality restaurants were very good.
POOLS - Excellent. Not too crowded, we always managed to find a couple of sunbeds regardless of what time we went there. The main daily entertainment was around the Marina Reef pool. If you want a quieter pool, go to one of the 2 Marina Beach pools. Only bad point was that we had one of our towels "stolen" from around the pool area (as did several other people) so had to replace it.
BEACH - Very good but the waves were quite strong as the beach is a bit steep. There are the typical beach sports there, volleyball etc, and it is very clean.
BARS - Good. Never really had to wait more than a few minutes for a drink. The Reef bar was usually busier than the Beach bar. Could do with more chairs and tables though (minor point)
CLEANLINESS - Good. The complex was usually spotless. Room cleaning was normally good, but was a bit hit and miss on a couple of occasions. Grounds were always spotless.
ENTERTAINMENT - Good. Daytime entertainment was varied and always good fun. The entertainment staff worked very hard. Evening entertainment was mainly dance oriented, but with other forms as well. Even though I am not really a dance "fan", I must admit that some of the shows were very impressive. A lot of light heartedness was also present and the staff really seemed to enjoy what they were doing.
STAFF - Very friendly in the main. Always willing to pass the time of day and most seemed quite happy doing what they were doing. Always willing to have a laugh and a joke with you.
RESORT - Sosua is ok apart from the smell of exhaust fumes. There are hundreds of small motor bikes used as moto-taxis and they are up and down all day. As in all the Caribbean places I have been, the shop owners hassle you to go into their shop. This is normal behaviour for them and the Sosuan ones were ok if you politely refused, they didn't hassle you too much (apart from the odd one). Internet cafes are the cheapest place for phone calls and internet access, LOADS cheaper than the hotel.
WEATHER - Not fantastic, but didn't really spoil anything. I don't know if it was normal or abnormal weather, but we had a fair bit of rain. Not continuous, but regular. It normally only ever used to rain for about 20 minutes, except in the evening when it went on for longer, but sometimes it was 3 or 4 times throughout the day and was quite heavy. We normally go to the Caribbean during rainy reason in October and we don't have as much rain as we got here. We didn't have any problems at all with mosquitoes either, which was great.
TRIPS - We did 3 trips in total, 2 with Thomas Cook (same price as Mel Tours) and one with the taxi company outside the hotel.
Dominican Discovery - This was the Mega trucks and was worth every penny. We had great fun and laughed from start to finish. Very highly recommended. If you do one trip, then do this one. (Beware, if you have a bad back then I would think twice. It IS quite bumpy)
Ocean World - Ok, I have my own opinion about this place. If you are going to go there and do the dolphin encounters etc then great, you will really enjoy it and it will be highly memorable. If you are only going for the general admission (as we did) then I would not bother going. We saw all the park and shows within a few hours and then were kicking our heels for the next 5 hours waiting for the coach to arrive. There isn't really a lot to do there and there are only so many times you can watch the dolphin encounter, as nice as they are:o)
Taxi trip into Puerto Plata - we enjoyed this one. 50 USD for a taxi full of people was quite good value. We visited the rum factory, larimar and amber museum, cigar making, shopping, the fort, the T-shirt factory. We would have done the cablecar but it was quite cloudy at the top of the mountain so we didn't go up in the end.
OVERALL - We had a great time here and thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks holiday. If you ARE looking to go to the North of the Island then I would definitely recommend this resort.

The hotel food was really nice depending on what you liked and where you went to eat.

| said: Hello again
This is now our 3rd visit to Casa Marina in Sosua.
It is a great hotel for our family.
It is also a great base for us to visit friends, explore the island, to eat out etc. etc.
Because the Hotels ( Casa Marina Beach & Casa Marina Reef) are in the district of Sosua called El Batey you are within easy reach of the Pubs, Restaurants, the beach (public beach), shops and much more.
Both Hotels are fine for those wishing not to venture outside the complex. Tours can be booked using Marothel Tours who are Casa Marina's Exclusive Tour Operators and these can be found easily from within the Hotels.
For those wishing to venture outside the complex to book your tours you would normally expect these to be cheaper.
We have never had problems with food in our last 3 visits to Casa Marina. Our rooms have always been ok.
The staff overall have been very good to us with.
For information on these hotels with photos etc. and information on Sosua you will find this website www.sosuadomrep.com is a good resource.
Have a great time at Casa Marina.

Also when we arrived the lighting is bad it seems like 2 x 15 watt light bulb
The evening meal was bland and the main restaurant was uninviting to eat at.
However the pool looked well kept, clean and tidy.
The staff was helpful and polite
But we moved hotel because the room was so bad.

| said: Booked a late deal only 1 week before departure. Was told on arrival at resort that our original room at the beach hotel (sister hotel and part of same complex) was near to some work being carried out by builders and was moved to the reef before even getting to our room. Excellent service from Thomson rep.
Our room at the Reef was on the ground floor ( they are 3 stores high) and opened straight onto fantastic pool. Welcome fresh fruit and drinks in our room. 2 double beds and a good sized bathroom. Only thing missing was that it would have been good to have a fridge in our room. Air conditioning good. Cleaned daily to a good standard. Safe drinking water available though water dispensers located throughout the complex.
Food and drinks available in the restaurants was of a good standard and we did not hear of any problems or sickness of other travellers. Great range of drinks and cocktails available at the bars until 23.00.
Always able to obtain a sun lounger either by pool or beach. We had fantastic weather without any rain which apparently is unusual for this time of year. Hotel staff friendly and presentable. Daily change of beach towels was great.
Entertainment during the day was available but we enjoyed the evening shows. Although mostly based around dance they were professionally put on. All in all a great late deal and fantastic value. Would we go again...YES

Entertainment team also work very hard and some of the evening shows are very funny.
Key tip - ensure you do not receive a ground floor room - very strong smell of damp.
I booked all our excursions through Linda at Mels Tours (located at the rear of La Roca bar in Sosua). They were better value than the Airtour excursions and they are fully insured. I would suggest booking horse riding with Rancho Lorilar (can book direct or through Thomsons) - they are much more professional and safety conscious.
We had a great time for our first trip to the Caribbean. Only the flight was a little too much - 8 hours!!

On getting to the hotel room I found that the room was no better it looked very dated.
However we had no complaints about the food and the service of the staff was excellent.
Entertainment was just ok not my cup of tea the entertainers did put alot of work into the shows that they did but we thought that they were to serious and we were bored by them.
Drinks were ok you could get most spirits and any cocktail that you wanted.
There are 2 beaches on the complex 1 very quiet and 1 alot busier. The beaches were lovely we were on them most days.
The weather was red hot and sunny alot of the time but unfortunatly we had 2 days of rain.
Finally if you get your hair braided get it done down in the town we got our daughters done in the hotel and paid $100 and we could have got it done for $30 in town.

I travelled there as a single female and the people couldn't have been more friendly and helpful and always at hand.
The room was perfect for me with no complaints to be had and cleaned everyday.
The complex itself was well maintained and there was always plenty to do and see whether you wanted to join in or just sit back and relax.
Plenty of choice of food for every nationality and plenty to drink.
I loved the Jacuzzis by the rocks which were also a very nice cooling change from the hot sun.
Came home tanned, relaxed with long braided hair and have already booked to go back in May '06

Guests can use facilities at both Reef and Beach resort - most of the action is based around the Reef Pool but there are 3 main bars and smaller ones with the restaurant's Italian and the Seafood were both excellent although after a week the food does start to get a little boring.
My only comment on the hotel was a lack of seating around the bars - each bar is slightly isolated with nowhere to sit and chat.

As a family we have stayed at the Beach in 2004 and the Reef in 2005. We are returning in 2006 for 4 weeks, that says someting about how much we enjoyed the place.
I have some photo's of Casa Marina Beach & Reef on a website about Sosua I created in 2005.
If you have visited this hotel feel free to upload your photos on sosuadomrep website to share with other users.

If you can ignore the people who "can't wait to get home for a McDonalds" then you'll be doing fine. Anyone complaining about this hotel has serious snags. We will book up again, but this time for three weeks.
Heard people complaining about the heat, the mosquitos and the food - only one thing to say to them - STAY AT HOME! Having done several all inclusive holidays, this was by far the best.
Staff and service couldn't have been better. The only critisism if it is that, is when we went to the welcome meeting the rep told us that the airport was not air conditioned and the facilities were poor on your return home, so you should consider booking into the VIP lounge at $20 each - don't - the airport is more that adequate - spacious, air conditioned and has plenty of shops, albeit more expensive than in the shops in your resorts.

| said: Hi Everyone!
We have been to this resort 3 times and are returning for our 4th time this January. We have been to other countries and visited other resorts but we keep going back to the Casa Marina Beach/Reef.
Hotel Cleanliness:
Very clean for a 3 1/2*. The rooms were cleaned every day by the friendly maid service. The beds, at times, were something to be desired but all in all, we were very happy.
Hotel Food:
I can start by saying that we didn't starve. There was always a wide variety of different dishes to try. Tons of fresh fruit and salad. Lots of pasta. I did find somethings rather greasy but for the most part, we have no complaints!
Hotel Location:
Your right on the beach! Who could ask for more? The small town of Sosua was right out the front door of the reception area. Internet and the Codetel company (telephone) was about a 2 min walk from the resort. Bank machines are a 5 min walk from the resort as well. If
I'm not mistaken, Scotia Bank is one of the banks that is available. Mel Tours was the tour company we booked all of our tours through, even though the resort rep and the hotel want you to book through them, you will not be disapointed with Mel's Tours. Mel's tours is much cheaper then the resort prices too.
We have done the Jungle Tour, Water Fall tour (3 times), Bacardi Island, and many others. Cabarete is only a 20 min bus ride away. We travelled most of the time on the bus and only took a taxi once as we wanted to experience the true Dominican life.
Just a note, when you go to Sosua public beach, the vendors there selling all the trinkets that you might want to purchase to bring home but...if you go to Cabarete, there is a Liquidation store (sort of in the middle of the small town) on the right hand side, that sells everything and for probably the lowest price you will find anywhere.
You are also better off buying your rum and vanilla at the local liquor store which is only about a 10 block walk from the Casa Marina Reef.
Hotel Staff:
The staff are always singing and dancing and laughing. They were all very friendly and always ready to help with anything.
Entertainment:
The evening shows are wonderful. Alot of time and effort has been put into each show. Since we've been there several times, we have seen all of the evening shows. I hope this year, we'll see something different.
Would we visit this Hotel again:
Of course...as I mentioned earlier, it's been the best resort I/we have ever stayed in!

The pool was clean and the beach is only a stroll away. This holiday is ideal for people who want to relax for a week or two its not party central but we made some friends there so we had our own parties.
We had fun in Hemingway's which is close to the jack tar village its an American type diner/pub the staff are friendly and the drinks were a reasonable price.
We did karaoke with the lads and girls we met it was a good night. This is a good hotel and great value for money.

| said: We really loved this hotel and destination, rooms are clean grounds are clean food is good, entertainment on every night its a 5 minute walk into Sosua, though you will get hassled by locals to try and get you in to there bars etc.
They advertise reef and beach as separate hotels but when you are there the grounds merge into one and you just walk into any of the restraunts, the mexican is fantastic, buffet restraunts have a huge choice I took a flask as theres no fridge in rooms and you really need it for cold water etc to keep in your room.
We met some great people there everyone so friendly.
