| said: This hotel is situated in Arrondissement 7, and is just a couple of minutes walk from the Musee D’Orsay and Seine in one direction, and about 5 minutes walk from Solferino Metro station the other way.
I had read some unfavourable reviews of this hotel on other websites, (small rooms, rude staff etc.) so was a bit nervous about what to expect, but we received a very warm welcome from Emmanuel at reception. All the staff were very polite and helpful, and spoke good English.
The room was pretty small, but it was in an elegant old building whose rooms had obviously been sub-divided, and then reconverted to include ensuite bathrooms. A lot of the rooms had a view over the central courtyard. I was relieved that the fabrics in our room were not the large red-and-black stripes as shown in the Thomson brochure!
Facilities in the bedroom included a TV, minibar, safe, and yes there was a built-in wardrobe with 2 small drawers! (Although we did not find it at first, it was behind the room door!) How much space for clothes do you need on a weekend break? The bathroom was tiny, and I didn’t feel the counter-top basin with fancy iron-work support was the best use of space, but the glass shower panel on the side of the bath did swing outwards to let you into the bath, or inwards to give you more elbow space at the basin. There was a hairdryer, which didn’t sound very powerful but seemed to work fine, so must have an extra quiet motor! The only thing we missed having in the room was tea/coffee making facilities.
The hotel was 99% clean, just a bit of dust under the basin where it was hard to reach. The wallpaper was a bit scuffed in places, probably due to the narrow space round the bed!
The breakfast room was very pleasant, they served the usual cereals, breads and tea/coffee. They also had fruit salad, yogurts, cold meats, cheeses, tomatoes and a big dish of scrambled eggs, which tended to cool off but had a nice flavour! It was all buffet style. There were no evening meals, or bar at the hotel.
There were lots of bars nearby, a sandwich bar next door, and a small restaurant on the way to the metro, which was quite pricey but very good (You could get 2 courses for 15€). There was a lovely fruit shop, which also sold bottled water, and a “huit-a-huit” convenience shop which was open from 8 to 8 as its name suggests! (Shut on Sundays). There was a small Chinese restaurant too, and a chemists. I think the prices were a bit high in the area due to being near the museum. We tended to go to the Latin Quarter for evening meal. (Could walk back along the riverbank if weather OK)
The area was quiet at night.
All in all, the hotel has a good central location and is ideal for the museums.
Re getting about, if you like walking you can get to the Eiffel Tower one way and Notre Dame the other. There is a relatively new footbridge across the Seine by the Musee D’Orsay, which takes you straight to the Tuileries gardens and across them to the Rue de Rivoli and the Opera/shops in about 30 mins, or to the Louvre. We didn’t find the metro line was on a direct route to anywhere except Montmartre, but it was fairly easy to change lines. There is also a Batobus (water bus) stop nearby.
