Just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Nizmar. This was our 6th trip to Goa but 1st stay at the Nizmar. The hotel is a good choice for adults or older children, there was not much provision for young children / babies. We were with a large family group including 2 babies and an infant, most of us were on the 3rd or 4th floor and had trouble getting cots/ high chairs etc, however the staff were very helpfull and did their best for us. Food is lovely no complaints from any of us. Couldnt understand how although it was 'All-Inclusive' you had to pay for Diet Cokes/ fruit juices & all drinks in your mini-bar fridge in room. We were booked into superior rooms and we all were not allocated these on arrival which was very inconvenient after a long flight, many were given basic rooms and had to wait another day so be prepared & make sure you are given the correct room that you book. Pool area ok although gets very overcrowded as people do not seem to leave the free facilities & venture away from the hotel which is a shame. Beach 10 min walk away - much better than staying by the pool. Hotel staff very friendly, entertainment great for all ages. I would definately return to this hotel as it has been one of the best I have stayed in.

Like everyone says, the bus ride into North Goa is a little bit of a culture shock, especially if you have not been to Asia. This wears off quickly, however.

We got to the Nizmar and the staff was very helpful, telling us to go out and have breakfast. Being that it was the first day, we did not understand the the breakfast was not entirely "open", and I ordered an omelette from the chef. Wasn't bad, but not something you would want to pay extra for. We only did breakfasts at the Nizmar, which was more for a people watching experience than anything else, the food was mediocre at best, and I do not like that "some things are free, some things you pay for" set up.

For an old place, the Nizmar was immaculate. The staff was cleaning 24 hours a day! The general manager of the hotel celebrated his 50th birthday while we were there, what a set-up!

Floating swan statues in the pool with a golden 50 between them, tables lined up with the napkins and plates lined up in precise order, all of chic Goa must have been there that night, the parking lot was packed with SUV's!!!! We had a drink at the bar while general manager was toasting his family, and it looked like a hell of a party! Of course, the staff was so good, the next morning, you would never know that there was a party!

The location was fab, close enough to Candolim and Baga, and once we found the little short cut beach road that takes you out to the beach at Rosario's shack (super garlic shrimp from Rosario himself!), after much exploring, we found this to be the cleanest spot on the whole of Candolim, Calangute and Baga beaches!

Like I said, Nizmar staff was superb, couldn't do enough, especially the 2 lovely boys who cleaned our room, and the boy who took all our over-weight luggage down 4 flights of stairs at 4 in the morning when we left!

Entertainment seemed good, but we did not eat any other meal except breakfast there. The best entertainment we saw passed right outside the Nizmar when the "Shigmo" parade marking the 'Holi" festival was held. What floats, what dancers, what drummers, what music, what a blast!

I have to say, Nizmar was great, maybe they should revamp a little, but the staff was great.

And a word to the tourists who just hang all day by the pool...why did you waste your money..get out and see Goa, it is fantastic!

Well, very hard to follow that last report as he got so much spot on. We were put in the supposedly dreaded block seven but found our room to be large and comfortable. Also our air con unit was the quietest we have ever experienced in Goa.

The thing that sets this hotel apart from others we have stayed at in Goa is the staff. They really do go out of their way to be friendly and polite at all times. Apart from one grumpy barman they were all excellent.

Valerie the receptionist seems to juggle about a dozen jobs effortlessly and always has time for the guests. She also comes round at breakfast to see if there are any problems.

This in India was a breath of fresh air. The popularity is obvious by the ammount of returning guests.

Yes the rooms are all a bit 1970 but this is Goa. Suspend your expectations of europe and you will have a great time here.

We stayed at the Highland Beach last year and the only thing better there was the number of pools. As we love the beach in Goa not a problem for us.

Please use the safety deposit boxes at reception. We did not and had some money go missing from our room. No blame attaches in any way to the hotel as I was stupid enough to leave it on a table right by the door. Most likely as the room boy was cleaning someone passed the room and saw some easy pickings. I had left rupees and sterling in the bedroom without problem.Harsh lesson but my own fault.

Will we go back. Definitely.

The wind was howling around the roof and chimney while the rain tapped loudly on the bedroom window. It was also a Saturday morning. But I really didn’t care. It was 6:15 and we were getting out of bed, to go to Goa. Six fifteen might seem a bit early to get up for the 16:30 flight from Gatwick, but hey, we live in Belfast, so there is an extra flight involved.

Y’know, I used to think the security at Belfast International was a joke, a bit OTT. Then we went to Gatwick!! Easyjet to Gatwick, delayed thirty minutes, no problem we had to have a five hour window in case of this. Seamless. We arrived almost on time, and according to the Captains announcement, made up the time by taking a short cut.

Ah, there is a comedic side to travel, I thought.Gatwick. Since 9-11 and so on, all air travel has lost it’s fun. Possibly more for UK and US departures than anywhere else. I want to tell you about the Nizmar, so forget the hassles of actually getting to your plane. That is the only bad part of the whole trip.

We booked and flew with First Choice. Our first time with them, and certainly not our last. If I’m allowed to single out anyone for outstanding service, it would be a Joan Bryan, in their internet dept. It was her good self told me about HT.

We and our two friends flew Star Class Premier, simply because we had done the Miami flight several times in cages, and life is way to short for that. Another delay, the Captain was being held up by Security, a big crack down on Staff.

We didn’t mind as we were being plied with cocktails and the staff were getting well sorted out for the 10 hour flight.

By far the best long haul we’ve done. Everything was marvellous. But wait. - Diabolim, our destination airport. Well they got the first 7 letters of it right!

We arrived about 24 hours after we had left our homes. It took 55 mins to get through immigration, another 50 mins for our luggage. But where are the dreaded porters? We’ve only seen two. On my way out I’m stopped by a smiling man, in a shirt and trousers. Cutting it well short, we bought 1000 ciggies in Gatwick, that was 4x200 plus a spare carton. I explained they were for 4 of us, 3 already away out. He wanted to see the other people but I didn’t want to leave my luggage with him, so stalemate. £20 will do, he said. Take 1 carton I said. £10 will do he said, Take 1 carton I said. I’m a stubborn person when deprived of sleep, so this went on for about 15 mins. Then a uniformed lady came over and told my captor, “300 rupees will do this man”. Gleefully triumphant I went to get the change to pay. Still no porters. Moral of the tale, if you do buy 1000 ciggies in London, break the carton up on the plane and share the load! The only reason for doing this is, you can’t get them (200 each) taken off you on return.

Out into the balmy morning air and those porters. They were swarming around my wife and two friends, and I was determined not to let them have their way, but by the time I went and got the taxi paid and sorted, I was beyond care. In fact I just wanted to be Nizmarrred.

Arrived at the Hotel about 09:40 to see the guests having breakfast by the pool. Reception was brilliant, even bordering on being way to jolly at this time of day.
Check in was a gift, we were told to go out and have some breakfast; our rooms would be ready very soon. They were. Valerie, the bubbly receptionist led us to our rooms, we were both in the same block.

Nizmar is divided into 8 blocks; one is admin, beauty salon, karaoke bar, reception. While the other 7 contain twelve rooms each I think.

Parts of blocks 2 3 and 6 have views over the pool, the rest don’t. Around the pool there are about 40 sun beds, a bar, Tandoori, and the place where absolutely everything happens. First, breakfast, then lunch and even dinner. All served by really friendly lads. Drinks too. They had two Buffets when we where here, one on Valentines, another for the Carnival. Both excellent, with lots of choice we never had dinner here, merely because of the vast choice outside. Several guests who were happy to stay in and eat said their meals were really good. There is a Karaoke bar on the first floor above reception. We called in one night, after a few drinks elsewhere and found it to be deserted. We got the hapless barman/ waiter to sing a song and then left. It was a forlorn place smelling of musty A/C , and the same atmosphere found in an undertakers!

China Garden is the Chinese restaurant at the back of the hotel. I can’t comment on the food, as we never ate there, but used it as a short cut out of the back of the hotel. We never actually saw anyone eating in there either, but apparently they will set your table up on the lawn, which looks expensive on their promo stuff, but is smaller than my lawn at home.

The rooms were very basic but adequate. While we had no choice but to have a “superior” room, it must have been superior because it had A/C. We seldom used the air con, and definitely never while in bed. I once had a Ford Anglia, and it was quieter. Our towels, two, were only changed every other day at the start. We asked for two more, so we then had four, which were changed only every other day.

There were tea and coffee facilities which we used once only. The coffee, or was it the Gin from the night before tasted foul. So many things at the Nizmar seem to be 40 or so years behind us, the coffee was definitely one. Be safe; take a wee jar of what you drink at home.

The bathrooms were almost just wet rooms. The shower worked really well. The bathroom was never cleaned as much as we would have expected, but remember this is only a three star hotel. We had laundry done three times, for very little money, and worth it. Ould Margaret washes enough at home. And she gets very little money as well!

A mention on Breakfast. The breakfast table is an L shape. If you are on B&B basis, everything on the long table is included, which is always fruit, cereal juices, breads etc, 1 egg dish and I spicy dish. You can have eggs etc, bacon, that kind of stuff at a cost of maybe £1 max.

Ayurvedic massage can be had on site, in between blocks 2/3. I had one, but I’m not sure if it worked! The traditional one was 600R and I had a special one done on my wee sore knee, it worked for a while, maybe you need loads of them at 500R each.

Okay, I did have one gripe. We were in room 606. One balcony, the one beside our bed, overlooked the pool area; it was very secluded because there was a palm tree growing right into it. The other balcony, the one on the other side of the room, overlooked a private dwelling. AND the pot wash area of the kitchen. The pots and pans started to rattle about 06:30, to our left, and right in front at 07:15 the man from the adjoining house came out to wash himself, head to toe, and then pour cold water over his entire body. He was tough, alright, but we were awake to see it, when we should still have been asleep. Our windows and doors were closed at night because of the mossies, and we still heard the din.

Overall, the staff was pretty faultless, always smiling, special mention to Valerie in Reception, seems really caring, and always has or gets you what information you need.

Even the security team always waved and smiled. The taxi drivers out the front were a bit too pushy, and as expected, too expensive. We went up the street a few yards and got someone much cheaper. I showed the taxi leader the printout I got from HT’s of the taxi prices and pointed out it was much cheaper than his posted prices. Ah yes Sir, they are last years prices, and petrol prices have risen. Doh, they were this years, and Petrol prices in India came down 3p per litre, two days before this discussion.

As I end my ramblings I look out at a cloudy March Sky and wish. God I would love to be there right now.

We moved to the Nizmar hotel from the Renton Manor owing to a awlful incident that happened there. The Nizmar hotel is one of the best hotels we have stayed in.

The staff very nice polite, the room we had was very clean nice fresh towles every day.

The breakfast was good nice to have clean cups to drink out. Live music every night, the whole place was a delight to stay.

If anyone is thinking of going to goa please try the Nizmar in calangute its super.

I thought the hotel was basic, our room was large but could do with a refurb (paint, new curtains, bedspread), at least we had electricity and running water but the air con was noisey!

Staff were generally polite but at times lacked customer service skills and thought nothing of continuing a conversation with other colleagues when customers were awaiting attention.

If you wanted a sunbed you had to be up and at breakfast at 0700 to reserve one - we went to the beach everyday.

Silly rule about not permitting guests to bring in food or drink from outside. Was this a ploy to get guests to use mini bar and other hotel services? This meant relying on the room boy to correctly report what the mini bar usage was, and bar prices were almost double those of bars outside of the hotel.

This was our third time at the Nizmar. The hotel is classed as a 3* but you are in India...Hotel has been partly re-furbished,but some blocks still in need of TLC.

Stairs etc looking tired & grubby. Rooms although clean are also looking dated, but the boys do their best to keep on top of it.

We found keeping a few choc bars or sweets in the fridge for them gets better service!!! Remember they only earn 20/40 rupees per day!!

Breakfast now includes fresh fruit, cornflakes, rolls, jam, toast, either boiled/scrambled/omelette on alternate days. Also indian veggie-dish or bread. You can also order bacon/fried eggs for an extra charge.

Staff are great esp Francis, Sita, Santa, Lawrence & Rudolph. If you have a problem a quiet word with one of them will get it sorted.

Do use the safety deposit boxes 50rupees per day.If your room is being cleaned the door will be open and it's easy to blame the staff....remember not all guests are honest!!!!

Well situated in between Calangute & Candolim.
Taxi's outside hotel really great.

We stayed at the Nizmar first 2 weeks in December and generally it is a decent hotel. BUT for 11 days out of our stay the toilet did not flush and the shower drain was always blocked occasionally flooding Effluent into the bathroom and once into the room itself while we frantically tried to dam the flood with towels!! Lovely! To be fair our complaints about this were always attended to by the maintenance and cleaning staff but the problem continually re-occurred. Avoid the ground floor!!

My mother in laws boyfriend had his mobile phone and some money stolen from his wallet in the the room, but the door was unlocked and he was sat on the loo at the time. The hotel staff seemed more concerned that we DIDN'T inform the police than finding the culprit. The cleaning staff were more worried about their jobs than anything else. Who knows, could have been a guest??

Security at the hotel seemed very good with guards at both gates, I think this was to prevent guests from bringing in provisions from outside. This 'encouraged' people to use the mini bar which was fairly well stocked and they asked you to sign a chit for what you had had every day or two. Obviously the prices at the mini bar and indeed at the bar and restaurant were approx 40% more expensive than outside of the hotel. Did hear one guest complaining when he settled the mini bar bill that he didn't drink the Beer that was on the tab (Only hangover inducing Kingfisher stocked)

Stayed at the Nizmar with my daughter for two weeks in December and we both thought it was great.

The rooms are basic but were cleaned every day & towels changed every other day, all the staff at the hotel were brilliant & couldn't do enough for us.

We went to a couple of the theme nights at the hotel & really enjoyed them, especially the pirate night where the staff enjoy it as much as the customers.

The prevous reviewer said he thought is was a bit expensive at 600 rupees but the buffet is excellent & is open all night & it's only about 7pounds, I thought it was good value.

All in all we had a great time & would recommend the Nizmar to anyone.

The room itself was ok, looked like it had just had a lick of paint before we arrived, there were dots of paint all over where they had patched the worst parts up.

In the shower room there was a tile missing in the corner where the water was supposed to run down, obviously with the tile missing it didn't and most often we were left with a pool of water in the bathroom. The window didn't fit right in the bathroom, we couldn't close it shut so every morning we were met with a plague of flies that had made their way in over night.

We only had 2 meals at the hotel, the Chinese garden was very good but we were the only ones there so there wasn't any atmosphere, we also went to one of the themed nights, this was ok but we thought a little steep at 600 rupees each, you need to eat a lot for that !!. We didn't get up for breakfast very much and when we did we wished we hadn't bothered.

Most mornings we were woken very early (5.30am) when we complained it was explained that the maids were getting the rooms ready for new arrivals that day, not good if you want a lie in, great if you want an early morning run without being run over.

We also realised that we had had some money stolen, we put our taxi and mini bar money to one side for the end of the holiday but when we came to pay the money had gone, we also reported this but didn't hear anything back by the time we'd left. I don't think I need to say that we won't be visiting this hotel again.

Don't be put off by spartan appearance, inside is fine, except for stairwells which are pretty grim.

Most staff are helpful, cleanliness good by local standards, minibar/fridge at shop prices. Room service, if you are that way inclined was efficient.

However, this hotel is badly let down by the catering arrangements at the restaurants. On arrival, you will be told about the numerous different restaurants - Mexican, Chinese, and Indian etc etc. This is almost entirely untrue. There are different zones around the pool which are nominally separate eateries and a bewildering array of menus will be given or requested. Except for the rooftop Chinese which was sometimes open and good, all the other stuff comes from the same kitchen and cooks. The Indian food was easily the worst I have had anywhere but the fresh fish/prawn dishes my wife ate were acceptable. I found that steak & chips (fries) were OK but not normally my idea of a good time. The best meal we had in 2 weeks was from the non-existent Mexican restaurant. This meal took two days to arrange and involved almost every member of staff including our rep. It was not possible to repeat this experience but we saw it as a major triumph at the time.

Breakfast is Continental-that's the European, not Indian continent, fried eggs etc extra, cheap & good.

What should have been a simple transaction at dinner each day usually became fraught due to the strange rules the staff chose to apply to our pre-paid half board status. Basically, the system is you 'spend' 1000 rupees allowance but they usually won't include drinks. If you aren't hungry you can under spend on the food but have to pay extra for the drinks. Staff can be unbelievable awkward in telling you how much you have spent-probably due the multiple menus from which you chose your meal. The whole edifice is so complicated that it can be quite wearing. Good job we were on holiday & had nothing much else to do!

Taxis at front or rear gate always available & good.
It is well worth having a driver 'adopt' you & take you out for day trips such as Old Goa-recommended.

It is possible to hire motorcycles/scooters but beware that it is always illegal, there is no insurance available, local drivers are probably skillful but crazy and hospital facilities/mortuaries are basic.

Please don't abuse the beggars - they really are in a bad way and even 10-20 Rupees can help.

Nice walk to beach - follow your nose out of back gate through surprisingly rural area. Enjoy!

The Nizmar is a great hotel. Accomodation is very basic - but clean and comfortable. We had a good sized lounge area with TV and minibar fridge and then a shower/toilet room and double bedroom.

Bed was comfortable and sheets were changed 3 times a week. Towels also changed 3 x a week

They also lend you towels each day at the pool.

There is a taxi rank just outside to it is very easy to get a taxi - we never paid more than 50 rupee to get to the main town / beach of Calangute.

Food is very good and cheap (as are drinks). Breakfast is basic but you can order cooked food for approx. £1 !

The best thing of all is the staff at the hotel - particularly those around the pool. They are lovely - so friendly and helpful.

One last thing - for peace of mind definitley use the safety deposit lockers and for extra peace of mind take a small padlock with you.

Enjoy!

Lovely hotel, very spacious rooms with seating area, mini-bar, full size TV. Very clean and staff very friendly and attentive.

Restaurant food was excellent, only downside being breakfast which was cereals, tea/coffee toast etc, anything cooked was extra and they managed to find tasteless cornflakes! Evening food was very good however, and the Monday buffet with added entertainment particularly good value.

Friend stayed at the Ronil, about a mile away, this has a superb restaurant but is starting to look a bit run down round the edges.

Just came back and thought the hotel was superb. The staff were very helpful and friendly, went out of their way to help. Rooms were excellent, mini bar, air con, 2 fans, sofa, armchair, sat tv, 2 balconies, very clean.

3 restraunts with varied menu's. Decent pool, not massive but ok, need to get to pool early to get a sunbed, location was good-5 mins to baga and candolim by taxi or tuk tuk, beach about 10 min walk.

You definatly go back again. Had entertainment most if not all night, s.breakfast was basic but you can order additional food at a small price.

We were greatly surprised by the Nizmar.

We arrived very tired after the long journey and had to wait a couple of hours for our room to be available, which didn't thrill us but nevertheless, the staff were very obliging and apologetic.

The staff were lovely but I suspect this was to do with anticipation of a good tip at the end! In fairness, all of the Goan people seemed genuine.

I was rather pessimistic about the trip generally but had a great time.

Watch out for the mini bar bill - we found ourselves being charged for bottles of water as the supplies were filled, then charged again once they were empty!

Clean towels/linen most days - very good standards of cleanliness within the hotel but a little tip - take some bleach tablets for the loo! They don't use bleach and the brown colour can be a little off-putting!

All in all, we enjoyed this hotel but wouldn't go back because Calangute as a resort wasn't our favourite place.

The breakfast was basic, toast, cereals, fruit, rolls, tea / coffee if you wanted omelettes or anything else you had to pay extra.

The rooms were very well maintained and cleaned daily; the only problem with our room was that it was positioned at the far end of the complex and adjacent to a small independent bar which stayed open until approx 4am, this did offer some disturbed nights.

The food was good and freshly prepared, both food and drinks were reasonably priced; there is also a reasonably priced mini bar in all the rooms.

The hotel is located away from the main area of Calengute but is still only about a 5 minute walk from the beach (down a back lane).

The hotel provided a variety of nightly entertainment some with a charge if you partook in the meal; if it was a birthday or some other sort of anniversary this was also celebrated.

Although we personally prefer Candolim to Calengute we would visit this hotel again.
