This hotel was fantastic!! The room was beautiful and the maids cleaned every day and left flowers on our bed. There was a well stocked optics bar with gin, rum, brandy and vodka and a selection of mixers and beers in the fridge in our room. The staff there are amazing! They entertain you all day at the beach or pool with volley ball, aquarobics, beach and pool games, disco and then at night time they are there again putting on fabulous shows and always always smiling! The food is second to none! Try out the Japanese restaurant it is amazing. There is a wide selection of food to duit everyone's tastes. I also loved the bbq chicken hut on the beach. It was an amazing holiday and truly chilled out. Yeh Mon!!

We stayed at this hotel for two weeks from 15th June to 29th June 2008 and had an absolutely brilliant time. We have been to the Caribbean only once before to Mexico and we thought that couldn’t be bettered but this topped that holiday hands down.

As we flew from England we had a long flight but it passed really quickly, we flew with Thomas Cook had a My Travel plane on the way out and a Thomas Cook Airbus on the way back they both had the extra seat pitch which made a big difference to the flight the entertainment system on the Airbus was better than the My Travel but that was the only difference also it took 10 hours to fly out and only 9 hours to fly back. We booked with Cosmos.

The check in at the airport went through swiftly with only waiting for the bags causing a slight delay then we were on our air conditioned bus and on our way to the RTB. It takes approximately one hour twenty minutes to get to the hotel but it is a lovely scenic route so it went by quickly. Jamaica has a very beautiful green and lush landscape with a lot of differences from very expensive looking properties to middle of the road to very poor looking tin hut type things but the one thing we noticed was that the majority of people we saw on our way to the hotel were all going about with smiles on their faces and looking happy with whatever they were doing. We saw a few dogs along the way but most although thinner than ours looked in good health also saw lots of goats and horses and donkeys and again they all looked well and healthy to us.

Anyway we arrived at our hotel after first dropping some guests off at the Riu Negril next door looked a similar property to ours from the view from the bus, then we were taken to our hotel, we were the only ones to arrive from England. The porter immediately took our bags to our room and check in was very quick where they showed us a map and told us where everything was, reception throughout our holiday were very helpful and friendly.

The first room we were given was in the un-renovated block 2 but after one night we were moved to the one of the new blocks room 5120. The only reason we asked to be moved was that as this room was at the back of the hotel we could hear a lot of traffic noise coming from the road at night and had trouble sleeping when we mentioned to our rep the next morning that we were thinking about paying for an upgrade and why she said immediately leave it to me and sorted us out with a free upgrade to a junior suite in the new block – thank you Georgia from Cosmos.

Just to compare the two rooms:-

The first room in old block was slightly smaller, had an old looking shower, needed a key for the safe and also the front door but would have suited us fine if not for the traffic noise. Although I must admit we did prefer the newer room.

The second room in the new block was a larger room with area for sitting, padded loungers on balcony, twin sinks in bathroom, new shower over the bath, newer looking fixtures and fittings, flat screen tv, digital safe and card to enter the room.

Both rooms had a free mini bar stocked with real rock, red stripe, coke, fanta, soda, tonic and water. Free optics with Appleton rum, vodka, gin and whisky. Also iron and ironing board. Towels for the bathroom were always plentiful. The shower was eratic in temperature though but not really a problem. Never had any smell in the room that some people have mentioned. Our room faced directly onto the garden but when out on the balcony you could see the ocean which was a nice surprise.

The food at this hotel was delicious and plentiful and when it runs out it is quickly replaced.

Breakfast had everything you could think of and more from cereals/porridge, fresh fruit, delicious breads and spreads, to fully cooked breakfast including eggs – boiled, fried, scrambled – lovely crispy bacon, hash browns, grilled tomatoes, also delicious pancakes with syrup or strawberry sauce so lots to choose from. Also freshly made smoothies and juice although no fresh orange juice.

Lunch could either be the jerk chicken from the hut on the beach which was delicious on its own even more so with the sauce added. Or the snack bar which changes to the steak house at night which had things like hot dogs, burgers and nachos with dips if you need your junk fix to fresh fish, steak, veg, chips, pastas and salads and more. You could also dine in the restaurant that is used for dinner but this had a more limited selection and while we were there not many people seemed to use it also you had to get dressed.

Dinner at the buffet was our favorite there was so much choice, there was a Jamaican corner with traditional dishes which I always had on my plate as they were yummy, there were soups and salads, pasta cooked to order, pizza, then in the main section lots of fresh fish, meats plain and in sauces also a carvery every night with lamb, beef, chicken, ham etc, lots of fresh vegetables roasted, steamed, in sauce and lots lots more. Also I have to mention the desserts they were the best I have had on AI and lots of choice and the fruits so ripe and delicious also a good selection of cheese and biscuits. This is the reason why I left this hotel 6lbs heavier.

The two alacartes that we tried were the Gourmet Sir Anthonys and the steakhouse. Sir Anthonys is next to the Japanese restaurant at the side of the entertainment stage and was air conditioned we had a delicious meal here and would recommend it. The steak house was open air but with a lovely breeze from the ocean and the sound of the music from the stage so a really nice atmosphere and again a delicious meal, we didn’t get around to trying the Japanese because we enjoyed the buffet so much. You have to queue for the alacartes on our first booking we were there for 8.30am and there was already a queue they take the bookings at 9.00am but the second time we were running late and got there for right on 9.00am and although the queue was quite long it moved quickly and we still got the restaurant and time of our choice, so I wouldn’t recommend wasting your time queuing too early.

There is also a pizzeria located close to the lobby serving pizza, pasta type food, so really while you are at this hotel there is always somewhere to get food and drink at anytime of the day.

Drinks were very good they had a large cocktail menu and also a large selection of spirits and liquors but they would make you any cocktail you named even if it wasn’t on the list. They also had a few branded drinks, Smirnoff, Jack Daniels and Martinis. Would recommend the rum cream with pina colada the rum cream with ice, dirty bananas, vodka and ting, vodka and cranberry and margaritas as being my favorites. They do not have a beach bar but they do have a pool bar which is just feet away from the beach. They also have two bars next to the entertainment area.

The staff at this hotel are some of the friendliest, helpful I have come across, anything you asked for you got “no problem” and it was sorted for you, special mention for Sherwin at the Plaza bar, Jefferson and Crazi Diana at the pool bar and Nolly in the restaurant but every member of staff I encountered was always smiling, cheerful and most of the time singing, I did not meet anyone who was miserable or unhelpful. The service was impeccable never had to wait long to be served at either the bars or in the restaurant.

The beach/sea at this resort was amazing the sea was so clear and warm and shallow for quite a way out but still deep enough to have a good swim if you went further. I couldn’t believe I could be up to my neck in the water and look down and still sea my feet. No rocks and very calm with just a few ripples for waves. The sand although not white like when we went to Mexico was just off white and very soft with no rocks or stones or even many shells, didn’t see any cigarette stubs either a very clean beach. They raked it every morning and very occasionally when seaweed did wash onto the shore it was quickly raked away. We couldn’t really get in the sea very much when we went to Mexico because of the currents and strong waves, so Mexico might have the really white beaches but Negril wins hands down with the beautiful ocean and lovely clean just off white sands. Never any problems with sunbeds you could literally have 2 or 3 to yourself might have been the time we were there though.

The two pools at this hotel were on the small side but when the beach is so close and so beautiful we never felt the need to even use the pools. We did have a look however at the pool attached to the swim up bar as a lot of people have commented on it being rather dirty but even at 5.00pm at night when we looked you could easily see to the bottom and I could not see any sign of a film on the top and they cleaned them both every night.

We got a few bites from the mosquitoes but nothing we couldn’t cope with we did use repellent though which seemed to help never saw any sand flies.

The entertainment team were quite mad (most of them anyway) Ninja with the gorgeously cute mad hair had the energy of a 5 year old he was always on the go and so funny and was always trying to get you to dance or to laugh or as he did to me on a few occasions creeping up behind me while I was at the bar and literally tipping me back in his arms and getting me to drink shots from whatever mixture he had in his bottle at the time always saying its good it tastes like chicken! Make sure you do water aerobics when he is taking it its brilliant. Devon the crazy one with the orange hair was just as mad and had a very strange dance routine. But my favorite was steam, not quite as mad as the others a bit more laid back, and a fantastic dancer. But they were all good guys and made a great team.

They had lots of activities during the day starting with water aerobics, bocca, horseshoes, reggae dance lessons, cricket, volleyball always something going on and a good mix of music throughout the day they spent most of the morning on the beach and the afternoons around the pool mainly doing drinking games in the pool. Be warned if you pick this hotel you will drink a lot and have a lot of fun.

For the evening entertainment the main show started around 9.30 some really good shows, some not so good but they have a team of really fantastic dancers (steam being among them) you can see they have put a lot of effort and practice into what they are doing so make sure you clap them well. We really enjoyed the “man king” show and the “Michael Jackson” show. They have a pre-show at 9.00 with the mad entertainment staff putting on a show that usually had you in stitches unless that is you were one of the unfortunate to be picked on. Before that there is usually a resident band playing reggae or the DJ playing some good tunes. Every Friday lunch time they have a beach party next to the chicken hut where they give out fresh coconuts, fresh fruit, plenty of alcohol and some hot food. A reggae band sets up in the corner and then the dancing get going don’t miss it. Also they have a beach party at night once a week (Tuesday) with music, fire eating and games.

They have some stalls that are set up three times a week near the pools selling various souvenirs did seem overpriced though.

They also have two shops one on the beach and one in the lobby selling everything you might have run out off or forgotten to bring and souvenirs they I thought were quite reasonable in their prices I bought a float for only $12.00 dollars so you don’t need to bring your own with you and they will inflate it for you. Everything is priced in dollars everywhere we went so would recommend USA dollars rather than Jamaican dollars.

We had fantastic weather the first week with only one afternoon getting rain which only lasted for about half and hour then completely cleared up again. The second week however we had rain most afternoons sometimes half and hour sometimes and hour sometimes the whole afternoon, but it really didn’t spoil the holiday as soon as the dark clouds started to gather and you felt the first drops everybody ran either into the ocean as it was lovely and warm and it didn’t really matter if it was raining or for the snackbar/entertainment area where they had music on and plenty of drinks flowing and you could just chill out cool down and chat, the entertainment team would also come around make sure everyone was alright and have a laugh with you. Sometimes when we were sat on the beach sunbathing we found ourselves actually wishing for a little rain because it was so hot.

We went on two trips one was the Black River Safari/YS Falls/Appleton rum factory really enjoyed this and would recommend it we saw quite a few crocs on the Black River and the guide was really funny he made the trip really entertaining, the falls were beautiful you didn’t have to swim if you didn’t want to you could walk up the steps at the side though all the greenery which made it nice and cool, or if you did want to go in there were plenty of staff to help you. The rum factory was very good very interesting and the tasting was a highlight we were shown to a bar with about 20 bottles of different types of rum/rum creams and told to help ourselves which we did, a very sleepy trip back to the hotel. We bought some bottles as did most people but if we went again we would wait until we got to the airport as we put them into our suitcases we were overweight with our cases and got charge £56.00 at the airport obviously they are very strict as we have been overweight before and got away with it. Also the airport at Montego Bay is very modern with decent shops selling all the rums that the factory had also slightly cheaper, you can also get cheap spirits (we got a litre of brandy for £16.00 costs £28.00 at home ) they also sell the blue mountain coffee, rum cakes which are very nice, perfumes, cigarettes and lots of souvenirs.

We also went to Ricks for the sunset although it rained once we got there but it still came peeping out eventually, really enjoyed it watched the cliff jumpers never got pestered for money for the jumps, they also had a live band playing reggae, plenty of seats, not that expensive for drinks cost us £2.75 each for a large cocktail which would have cost at least £5.00 each at home.

We were told by people before we came mostly from England that we should be very careful when we got to Jamaica as it is not safe to go out, we were very wary I can tell you. But all I can say is that we were two females traveling together and our experience was very different. The first time we went out we used the hotels taxi to take us to Ricks but didn’t book the return journey as we hadn’t been before didn’t know how long we would stay for. But when we were ready to leave we wandered outside and there were people asking us if we were ok when we said we wanted a taxi back to hotel we were sorted out instantly with one (red plates) and taken back by a very friendly chap who gave us a bit of Jamaican history and a laugh and we felt completely safe and it was cheaper than the hotel taxi. We also went shopping to the market/stores the next day which is in between the hotel and Ricks about 10 minutes by taxi and were fine and we decided to walk back to the hotel and again we felt safe and indeed got back safely. Don’t really like haggling so didn’t buy much but when we said no we weren’t pestered it was just no problem. Also never got offered any drugs at any time we were in Jamaica although when we were on the beach we did know which guy was selling it but he was quite discreet and never approached us.

We went for a walk along the beach one morning to the Riu Negril it only takes about ten minutes to walk there. Along the way there are a few traders but when we were asked if we wanted to look and we politely said no they were fine saying no problem, The sea looked just as clear and calm as outside our hotel but the sand was slightly grittier but not a major problem although we only went as far as the entrance as we wanted to have a nosy inside as well. The entertainment area seems a lot bigger here but I think they have more rooms than the RTB also the pools are larger. Overall I think the only major difference was that the sunbathing area did seem a lot smaller on the beach than the RTB and with a lot more shade.

To sum up I would recommend this hotel very strongly to adults, and families and wouldn’t hesitate in going again would love to in fact but depends on the price when it is changed into a palace. Also I would have thought that when it is changed into a palace they would have made one large infinity type pool and take away the two smaller ones which is the design for Riu Palaces but as they were painting the small pools when we were there I don’t think that is going to happen. I really think a bigger pool would be an asset to this hotel. But if the price is right we will be back.

Read the reports before we went out and was quiet worried, we was hoping that the reports were far fetched, but they were not.

Firstly the staff were rude they just wanted your money if you didn't tip ever time you had a drink they wasn't to quick to serve you the next time.

The food was the same every day so the first 3-4 days we thought the food was good, then it got boring, the a'la carte restaurants were not worth queing for.

There is nothing for the children to do, the children club was rubbish there entertainment was walking the kids up and down the beach no play ground so it was very hard to keep our son amused.

Now the rooms there are very much in need of decorating and do smell we also had to change rooms because of this, this hotel should be rated a 3 star, while we was there two couples were robbed out of there rooms, so security hadn't improved, we then carried everything round with us. Which was a worry!

We went and had a look at the Sandals and Beaches hotel they were fantastic which made us feel very depressed when we had to return to our hotel, we will not be returning to Jamaica again.

The Drugs and poverty put us off.

First time away without kids, so we went all out and booked a 5 star.

We were so looking forward to being spoilt, what a disappointment.

The journey to the hotel takes two hours which is exhausting after the flight.

The reception area was beautiful, so I thought we'd hit jackpot.

The room did smell fusty but thought we would get used to it, but by morning we had to ask for a room change which they did and that room was much better, but I would have to agree with the other reviews, the hotel is in desperate need of updating.

The pool was dirty so didn't bother going into it.
The beach is nice but you will get bother with the locals offering drugs and all sorts of things, don't take them up on the offers for cheaper trips to the dunes etc one couple ended up spending 150 dollars more than if they booked with rep.

The entertainment staff tried their best but some nights it was mind numbing.

The food was ok but was the same choice every night, maybe too much choice, they could have varied it with less choice. Lunch time was the same every day, burgers, hot dogs, pasta.

The staff weren't as friendly as we would have liked, when we've been to other islands the staff can't do enough for you, these just expected you to tip them whether they deserved it or not.

There is nothing to do outside of the hotel and you can't walk about at night, if you do want to go out take a taxi but agree a price first.

I would not go back to this hotel again, I have stopped in a lot better hotels which were only three stars.

First impressions when we arrived was WOW the reception area was great, but then we was given our room, on entering the room the smell was terrible, so we turned straight around and asked for a room change, the girl behind the desk was very rude, we was given another room which was a lot better but the Mats on the floor were so dirty we rolled them up so we didn't have to walk on them.

The hotel, especially the rooms are in desperate need of re-decorating. There is nothing for you to do outside of this hotel due to location.

The entertainment did try there best but was like watching a school play most night. Food was ok plenty of choice but the same choice every night, so got a bit boring.

When we arrived and was given our first room, we nearly died the room reeked, we went straight down to reception and complained and was given another room. When we went up to that one it faced the gardens and we had paid for a sea view, so we had to go down yet again to complain. We eventually got a sea view room, but that smelled fusty as well but by this time we were to exhausted to go down again, so waited until morning. When we went to reception to tell them about the smell they were very rude to us.

The food was ok, but very much the same each day especially at lunch time, burgers, hot dogs, and garlic & herb pasta, every day.

The pool was filthy when we asked about it they said the filter had broke and was waiting for repair man, he didn't come the whole two weeks we was there so we decided not to go in.

Several of the staff were rude asking for tips before they even fetch your drinks, some were very nice.

This hotel is in desperate need of being decorated the furniture is very old and looks shabby, most of the guests complain about the smell in the rooms and two couples had raw sewage flood there bathrooms.

We heard of several couples who were robbed out of their rooms, no forced entries has they had copies of room keys and safe keys, we went to reception and demanded that our safe key was changed and we picked it and wouldn't let them write the key number down, it made us feel a little safer.

Overall we was very disappointed with this vacation when you book a 4 star hotel you don't expect to get 2 star service, would not go back to this hotel or recommend it to anybody

We booked this hotel for our Honeymoon, on the 3rd day there we was ROBBED out of our safety deposit box they took everything, no forced entry they had copies of the room key and safe key, 5 other couples were ROBBED in the same way. On talking to the staff they told us that this had been a problem within the hotel for a while and 6 weeks before our departure they had all the safe keys and barrel destroyed and new ones order, this didn't solve the problem because it an inside job and the thieves who had access to the keys before still had access to the new ones. New Management had been sent out to try and sort the problem out but were of no help to us, I had to ask for a room change because we just didn't feel safe.

The new manager also said we must have misplaced our belonging because it was impossible for anyone to get a copy of the keys. A gentlemen called Nigel reported that he had gone to the wrong room and opened the door thinking it was his room but had only can up 2 floors instead of three, it only turned out to be the General Managers room he gone into and surprise surprise the locks were changed within 30 mins.

SO BE WARNED BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOUR GOING TO THIS HOTEL!

Just returned from a outstanding two week all inclusive two week holiday in the glorious sunshine at the Riu Tropical Bay Negril.

The hotel was very well kept, all the staff were friendly and made us feel very welcome.

Our room was kept spotless, fresh towels every day. The restaurants served various dishes to suit everyone which was of a high standard.

The beach was relaxing and peaceful (no hawkers!) the ocean was clear and very clean, with trees if you prefer some shade. The sun sets were spectacular.

The entertainment team were very enthusiastic and tried very hard.

We relaxed totally and would return to this hotel.

Stayed in this hotel in January and i have to say this hotel is outstanding! The food was great lots of choice however there are 3 main restaurants and a buffet restaurant, to eat at one of the 3 restaurabts you have to book a table in the moring and the queue can get rather big.

Both pools were lovely, however, the beach wasnt the best, not how you imagine the carribean to be, water was cloudy and sand a bit rocky in places.

The rooms were excellent and were cleaned every day.
The only fault was the transfer think it took 2hours from the airport to the hotel, but its worth it.

I would deffinatly stay here again.

We stayed at the Riu Tropical for nine nights and had a wonderful time, the best bit about the resort for me was the staff and the beach which was always kept clean with clear blue warm sea (no seaweed either) and there were always beds available along with clean beach towels which you could collect daily from the poolside.

We had an oceanview room veiw which we were more than happy with as we didnt know if one would be available for us, again our room was always kept clean (the maid came every day we were there except sunday I think!) there was occasionaly a fausty smell in the room but it soon went once we opened the balcony doors so we never had a problem with it.

There was a mini bar in the room which was re-stocked every two days and the beds were two double ones pushed together so more than enough room for us! Also the balcony was a good size with really comfy seats to relax and watch the sunset on.

The complex itself was well maintained and very tropical which I loved, the food was good we ate in all the restaurants and our favourite was the steak house, loads of choice in the buffet restaurant and if you go you must try the barbequed chicken from the beach hut at lunchtime its really nice.

The only downside for me was the entertainment in the evening but thats just because I prefer reggae music to grease shows etc there was a disco open from 11pm-3am.

Must say a very special thanks to ken who really looked after us at the Riu, we can't wait to come back and see you again.

One important point regarding the Riu Hotel in Negril. There are actualy TWO hotels, one called The Riu Tropical Bay and the other Riu Club Negril. The Tropical Bay is the poor standard older hotel with all the the bad ratings. The Riu Club Negril is the newer cleaner and far better hotel. The two hotels are only about 1/4 mile from each other in the Bay.

Luckily we stayed at the Riu Club Negril. Cannot fault this hotel. The beach was nice but the sea was disappointing because water was rather cloudy for snorkelling but it was clean and the sand was swept every morning at dawn. Food and drink were top notch and plentifull. Staff polite and helpful, entertainment was great in the day but lousy at night apart from the odd dance show, there were 30 of us so we entertained ourselves otherwise you could get bored unless its your honeymoon!

Great ocean side room. Would suggest building 1 or 6 for the most quiet. Building 3 or 4 for the closest to the entertainment and pool, food, etc.

The employees go out of their way to help you and always with a smile.
