By no means is this a 4 star hotel I would rate it as 2 star The rooms were worn out the bathroom ceiling in particular was constructed of what appeared to be white hardboard which in itself was dirty and scruffy.

No tea/coffee making facilities as you would expect in a 4 star. We had to "rent" the pool towels.

The food was awful and certainly not to the standard which you expect from a 4 star hotel. We were glad to get home.

The gardens were well kept and the sea view from the rooms was excellent but these "assets" do not make a 4star hotel.

Would not recommend this hotel at all.

This is our 3rd time here at this hotel. The last time being 7 yrs ago. We still love the place, but the evening meal is not quite as good as previously, although quite satisfactory. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff though are not very friendly, especially at reception - tend to feel they are unapproachable, which can be off-putting, but we didn't let this bother us. Entertainment quite good, but aimed mainly at the older generation, not teenagers. Yes, we will go again. The views from the hotel are magnificent and the swimming pools (3 of them) are fabulous. Food around the pool very cheap too and good.

The hotel is cleaned every day and the maids do an excellent job in keeping the rooms clean and tidy. The bathrooms and balconies are small and basic, but other than knock 2 rooms into one nothing can be done about this. We had 2 rooms with a connecting door which we kept open, if all 4 of us had been in one room it would have been very cramped. It's worth noting that what the brochure refer to as a family room, is in fact 2 rooms with a connecting door.
The location is brilliant for the views although for anything else not very good. No where to really walk at night the promenade is poorly lit. The bar staff and reception staff are very friendly and go that extra mile for you, however, the staff who clear the tables in the dining room are little sullen, so what though it's self service, they are not there to make conversation. The entertainment board looked interesting we didn't sample any of it so can't really comment.

We would visit this hotel again, if only to see if any of the comments which must have been completed on the feedback form in the hotel and on the plane have been acted on.

A friend and I visited the Mellieha Bay Hotel in June 07. I had been to Malta before and always had good hotels. The Mellieha Bay is not a 4* hotel.

If you read some of the other reviews regrettably the comments there still apply - ie bath water is still brown when it first comes out ("reverse osmosis" apparently) but I'm sure other hotels have spent money dealing with this.

The rooms are very tired and dated with somewhat ancient bathrooms. It is clear there has been no investment in the property for some time as the corridors - soulless - are carpeted with tacky green cord.

Breakfast was the same for days on end - ie in a 4* hotel there is sometimes omelettes available cooked to order, if you wished for a cooked breakfast there was only eggs, bacon, sausages - mushrooms/saute potatoes never featured.

There is often home made yogort available with all sort of fresh & dried fruit to accompany in other 4* hotels- but you can only get tinned fruit salad which reappears at dinnertime! The food is reasonably well cooked but the variety is quite limited.

The staff don't appear happy or welcoming. We did complain to the Portland rep that this wasn't 4* accommodation to which she responded "but just look at the view across the bay". Sorry - if they had the view and a well maintained, well resourced hotel then it would justify the star rating.

The entertainment during the day seemed to be mostly within the hotel - no aqua-aerobics or anything based round the pool, and some of it featured bowls and bingo for the elderly.

The location is a bit out of the way with no nearby shops if you fancy a stroll in the evenings. We wouldn't visit again and have complained to Portland only to be fobbed off with "standard" letters unrelated to our particular complaints.

I visited the hotel in July this year with my husband, my friend, her partner and her 13 year old daughter.

Thomsons did not provide any entertainment that I could see for teenagers.

The evening entertainment was aimed at an older age group.

The location of the hotel was excellent and the view from my room was very nice.

The food was excellent and always at least three different choices for the main course in the evening.

I found the staff very friendly and helpful. The rooms were cleaned daily to a very good standard.

I would definitely return to this hotel again.

My wife and I stayed at the Melliaha Bay Hotel from the 22nd November for seven nights and we would not return under any circumstances.

The hotel is situated away from any amenities with the local buses running a distance from the hotel at regular intervals to various areas on the island.

The hotel is made up of eight blocks mainly five storeys high with the main reception area/lounge and restaurent in the centre block, the accommodation blocks span out either side, four being on one side and three on the other. They resemble a holiday camp accommodation of poor quality, the passageways leading to the accommodation are dirty and un-inviting, the rooms are dated along with the bathrooms and are in a desperite need of modernisation, rooms include bath with fixed shower, toilet and basin, wardrobe drawers and shelves, coffee table, carver chair, two bedside cabinets, small television with nine working channels, small fridge, writing desk and chair, door to a small balcony or patio with two white plastic chairs and table. Blown air heating/airconditioning. Daily maid service.

All rooms overlook the hotels gardens towards Melliaha Bay and the view is quite attractive.

There is no tea or coffee making facilities in your room and no bottled water supplied on your arrival.

The lounge area is dated which is segregated into small areas with a bar serving hot and cold drinks.

The restaurent has two buffet areas and this is the best feature of the hotel, the meals are goods with a varied diet but the flies are in abundance in the restaurant and the food is not covered.

We found the hotel staff to be moody, the hotel has no atmosphere and guests seems to disappear after meals.

On one morning the fire alarm system activated at 0419, we found that our fire escape route doors to be locked with a key and not a push bar system, we also had prolonged shortages of hot water until they replaced the water pump and then we suffered with dirty brown water.

Cockroaches are an accepted feature of the hotel especially during the hot summer months but we had them visiting our room during our stay.

During our stay there was an abundance of flies inside and outside the hotel with numerious cats causing problems in the gardens.

The daytime entertainment consisted of bingo, bowling and darts. Evening entertainment is not worth mentioning.

I understand that the hotel is due for refurbishment shortly and this is long overdue.

THIS IS NOT A FOUR STAR HOTEL BY ALONG WAY AND WE WOULD HAVE GRADED IT MORE AS A TWO STAR HOTEL.

A disappointing holiday.

The hotel overall is clean and tidy, we have visited this hotel for the past 23 years, sometimes missing a year. However, this year I felt that my family's room was not cleaned as well as usual. I have to add that the rest of my party did not have a problem with this and knew their maid on a first name basis . I don't think I saw ours at all.
The food is good but not as good as 10 years ago when it was waiter service. Now it is self service and seems to be a different theme of roast dinner.

The view from the bedrooms is great, all rooms face the sea and look out accross the bay.

The staff are great, friendly and helpful.
I have visited this hotel over a period of time, and so do a lot of other people.

I am wiating for the Portland brochure to come out for 2007 so that I can book again.

The Mellieha Bay hotel is a friendly place, the staff are nice and the location leads directly on to the beach.

The maid service was fantastic and the hotel was very clean. However, the bathrooms and rooms are old and very tired. The bath was rusty in places and could do with replacement. The reception area and lounge was excellent quality and the pool are clean and tidy.

The food however was not great, especially if you are vegetarian. Although there is a selection of meats (carvery) each day, if you dont like roasts, I would recommend you have lunch instead of dinner and eat out. The rest of the food was luke warm and nothing to write home about.

The entertainment was laughable. The only people on the dance floor were the (handful) of kiddies and a larger proportion of ballroom dancers. Only one night was there a very good singer (young lady and a man) but the rest of the evening entertainment was not worth going to.

If you are retired or have a young family, you will enjoy the location and hotel amenities. If you are below 30, probably best off going someplace else.

Very nice hotel, friendly staff.

Beautiful sea and Mellieha city can be seen from your window and balcony. Location is ok, and when you need to go by bus to other cities it is very easy.

Trials for walking around on Marfa, and a beautiful garden of hotel. Only negative point was cleanliness of those long corridors outside rooms, very dirty carpets and ugly brown colour.

The food was good in buffet dinner but if you like vegetarian food dont think you can eat so much. You will be hungry after eating.

The melliha bay hotel was certainly not a 4 star as quoted in brochure, the food choice was good and the restaurant was clean, but we did see cockroaches in there. The evening entertainment was ok. Hotel staff were helpful but a smile was a rarety. The bedrooms were a bit dated and drab, but as we were there refurbishing was being carried out. Cats were everywhere causing a problem if you don't like them. Nice sandy beach but will get packed in high season. Quite a walk to the village, not a good resort for the less mobile. We visited in January and it snowed twice, and it was big coats all week. The best part of the holiday was Carmen who was responsible for a lot of the entertainment during the day and the evening, she was brilliant!

Food could have been a little better warm at evening but you have to be there quick

The location is far from anywhere nearest hotel about 1 mile around bay about 15mins to get there.

The staff were friendly all the time, always helpful.

If you can ballroom dance your in, I'm 38 yrs and most of my party were as well, the night got worse nothing for my generation at all.

We got married here I'm glad it was only for a week but maybe go back.

Always a rep around if you have a problem.

Rooms were damp and very cold in the night asked to have all my party together but were put in different blocks which was a pain .

Definitely hire a car or there’s nothing to do

We arrived late evening and drove ourselves to the hotel in a hire car, finding it was no problem. Check in was quick and we stayed in block B so didn't have a trek to the room but as the hotel is in 5 blocks it could be a long walk to other rooms.

The rooms were cleaned every day but they swept the dirt outside the room door and the corridor carpet was only vacuumed once during our stay. My son recognised our room by the fluff ball on the carpet outside the door.

The resturant was in need of decorating flaky plaster and paint. Manager of resturant I found to be surly and quite rude, but waiters and waitresses on the whole friendly.

Good choice for breakfast but I found dinner dissapointing but then I am not adventurous when it comes to food!!

I can't comment on the entertainment as I have a four year old son who still has to go bed early even on holiday. If he didn't he wouldn't have been allowed in anyway.

The Kids Club reps were excellent and he really enjoyed his 2 hours with them and we enjoyed 2 free hours sunbathing down on the jetty. Names had to go on a list the evening before to ensure a place the following day.

Plenty of sun beds. Pool cleanliness not great. The indoor pool had only just opened as we went on the turn of summer and winter seasons and by the end of our week it was scummy around the edge. Outside pool very cold in October. Tropical storm left childrens splash pool full of leaves and debris which took them a few days to get around to and the floor around the outside pool was not washed down at all while we were there but it did rain some nights and I think they thought this was good enough.

We didn't venture up to the Jamacia Inn pools so can't comment on those.

We were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived at what is quite a large hotel for Malta. Public areas were clean and the rooms were well serviced. Outside, the pool was regularly cleaned and the sunbeds and tables tidied up every night. The food (breakfast and evening meal - buffets) was very good. It covered virtually all tastes and you could take or leave what you wanted. The location was fine for us as we like walking (half an hour or so to bars and cafes around the bay). However, there is plenty at the hotel for the less mobile and buses are good until late evening. All the staff (reception, bar, restaurant etc) were excellent.

As you approach the hotel from the back it is nothing to get excited about. Once inside the Lobby has been refurbished and you start to hope that things will improve. However, the rooms were in desperate need of updating, the restaurant felt as if you were in a time warp from the 60's and although the evening entertainment room is better, children are banned. Not much good for us- we have a very well behaved 8 year old with very little available for her to do in the hotel. The water sports were good and there were plenty of beds to use, but only one of the pools was worth swimming in- the other was very old and dirty. We wanted to bring in a JCB and revamp everything- the location is excellent overlooking the bay-everything else is 40 years out of date. Finally- I personally thought the food was dreadful- like school dinners in a cramped dinning hall- no choice for me as a vegetarian- I actually lost weight on holiday- unheard of!

Hotel is sprawling four storey building separated into 4 adjoining blocks. We stayed in block B which was near to the reception and the hotel's one restaurant.

Reception and Lobby Lounge were apparently recently refurbished and are pleasant and clean. The air-conditioning works extremely well and I sometimes needed a cardigan whilst sitting there in the evening.

We were checked in quickly and efficiently by the reception staff who were very obliging during the whole of our stay.

Whilst walking down the long corridor to our room I was slightly disappointed by the drab beige carpet and room doors and the cream walls which were in dire need of decoration. I only saw this carpet vacuumed once during our stay and it always looked a bit grubby. Our room was clean but very basic. The furnishings seemed quite new and there was adequate wardrobe space. Air conditioning was efficient and fairly quiet. The view over the bay was magnificent which all rooms have apart from ones the ground floor.

Bathroom was small but clean. The shower looked a bit antiquated but was very powerful and there was hot water at all times of the day. We had to be a bit careful not to flood the room during showering and noticed that the architrave on our door was coming away - possibly due to previous floods!

There is a T.V showing one BBC channel and a news channel in English but the rest was in German - not a problem for us as we don't bother with T.V much whilst abroad.

The food was buffet style and offered a large choice at breakfast to suit most tastes. Dinner consisted of soup of the day, a roast every night, large salad range and three other hot choices. The veg choice was somewhat limited. There were usually two choices of pudding along with ice-cream and fruit. They served a children's menu of the usual chips, nuggets, beans etc between 6pm and 7pm and you have to order that direct from your waiter.

There are three adult pools and two children's pools which were safe and clean. Sunbeds were plentiful around the pools and also down on the lido where you could enter the sea via steps. There was also a small private beach where sunbeds were also situated. Although there was a sign saying beds were not to be reserved we noticed people going down to the pool early before breakfast to nab beds and the practice seemed common.

There is a bar serving snacks at the main pool and also at the pools at the far end of the hotel. There was also a bar between the lido and the beach so plenty of choice. Snacks were limited to sandwiches and the usual chips etc but were not too bad.

There was a small games room with pool table, juke box and air hockey with a lounge next door for relaxing out of the sun although there was no airconditioning in these rooms.

The entertainment took place in the Limelight Lounge. Children were allowed in the outer parts of the lounge but under 12's not allowed where the entertainment took place. I can't comment on the standard as we didn't sample it but I can say that by the look of the photos of the entertainers on the notice board it looked a bit mediocre.

The waiting staff were always pleasant and efficient and all spoke excellent English.

The hotel was located around the bay opposite the village so you need to get the bus or hire a car to get to the few shops available. Not ideal but at least away from the main road which makes it very quiet.

I would say that the facilities supplied by the hotel give it a 4* rating but the rooms are definitely 3* and the decor away from the main public areas leave a lot to be desired.

My partner and I chose the Mellieha Bay hotel as the reviews in the brochure was excellent.

When we arrived at the hotel we were little disappointed the staff on reception seemed a little unpleasant and there was no help with our luggage to our room so my partner had to make 2 journeys as I was 7 months pregnant.

When we got to our room I was disappointed. Also as it was very basic and not at all what I expected for a 4 star hotel, I've stayed in much better 3 stars. The views from the room were lovely but this was the only plus point.

I didn’t rate the food much and the staff seemed very miserable. The hotel was far away from any shops and wouldn’t advise any pregnant woman or somebody with walking difficulties to stay at this hotel as there are a lot of steep hills.

The entertainment at this hotel was designed for the elderly only so my husband and I spent most nights either in our room or in the internet room.

One thing I know for sure, this hotel is not a 4 star.

The hotel was nice, but nothing for our children to do.

Entertainment was ballroom dancing and was really only catering for the oaps in the hotel.

The hotel had a kids club and was advertised as being suitable for children but there were only 3 kids in the whole hotel.

Maybe the hotel is ok in season but in the winter months it is only suitable for the over 50"s.

I have visited this hotel many times ( since 1981) and I keep going back I agree with the comments about the hotel could be more updated and the entertainment is a little boring. However, it is not an overly expensive hotel and you only get what you pay for!

The hotel is clean and has gone through many changes. The location whould only suit people who wanted a rest and not hectic nightlife. The staff are second to none, there are even some there who were there when I first visited, they even have their children about to start work there soon.

I would certainly visit again, I have booked to go this year (2005).

I have experienced this hotel in the 80's as a teenager and now with a family (which I must say the rooms with bunk beds in are the same size as a 2 bedded room) are very cramped has not put me off. Also in the 80's you were not charged extra for a sea view, the reason you are now is because they have not cut cut the bushes.

All in all I love this hotel and would not like to think that I would never return.

However, you need to go to make your own mind up, as everyone has different ideas of a holiday.
