| said: we travelled here without any prior knowledge apart from location pictures. it is well situated for the beach and local shops. you quickly get into the routine, as most of the guests ,probably 90% are british. the breakfasts are great, all tastes from corn flakes to full english are presented on a help yourself basis. the big let-down however is the main evening meal, which due to the variety offered, is a bit of a jumble.it would be better to have less choice, say three main dishes which are well prepared instead of such a big range which were below par. for example, turkey would be one night, then turkey in some sauce ,then another night turkey curry. you get the idea. no children is a big bonus, most guests were middle to elderly. (we are in our sixties).the shows were fairly good in the large well appointed main lounge, but you have to endure 30 minutes of bingo before they started.there was a quiz running at all times in the main bar organised by the hard-working entertainment staff who did try to make everyone happy. all staff were helpful and polite and the pool was clear and surrounding areas tidy.rooms were clean and modern ,receiving all british tv stations.so, apart from the main meals it was a very pleasant stay.

| said: We stayed at the Son Matias for nearly a month in November and had a great time.
The hotel is a little smaller than the usual ones in Majorca, with just 135 rooms over 9 floors. It’s position could not be improved upon….right on the front with a nice flat promenade outside the front door. All rooms have either a full sea view [ room numbers ending 1-6] or side sea view [room numbers 8-14] The full sea view rooms have sun in the early morning and the side sea view rooms have sun till about 3.00pm.
All rooms numbers ending in 7 are corner suits, which looked very nice, with both front & side sea view and are larger and have such thinks as a sofa and separate shower.
Our room was well maintained, with everything working, and looked as though it had been redecorated within the last 12 months or so. We originally asked for a front sea view, but decided to change for a side sea view room to get the afternoon sun, and this was not a problem to the hotel staff, who I have to say were very helpful and friendly.
The hotel does not take children, is 100% occupied by British guests, and consequently had food which suited us….such as Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pud on Sundays, Porridge as a breakfast choice etc. I know there are always people who would like to be a bit adventurous on holiday as far as food is concerned, but everyone we spoke to said the food choice was great, with something for everyone’s taste.
The majority of guests at this time of the year are in the 55+ age range, so I am not sure it would appeal to young people, particularly in winter, when most of the outside bars and clubs are all closed.
Again because the hotel is catering for British guests only, the entertainment was also good. At this time of the year we were expecting to be entertained by a man on a piano in the corner! but most nights the acts were highly watch able, usually British singers although we did watch an acrobatic act one night, which was very enjoyable.
There is also lots of daytime activities such as shuffleboard, darts competitions etc for anyone who is interested, and daily quizzes as well as a 4.00pm tea dance….although none of this is compulsory. The entertainment team of Claire & Danni did an excellent job keeping us all occupied particularly on days when the weather was not too good.
The only thing which we found could be improved upon was the fact that the smokers room, is adjacent to the main lounge and you had to go through the smoking area to get outside to the pool area or the promenade, which none smokers found not very pleasant.
All in all we enjoyed our holiday here, and we would recommend it to others. We will defiantly be going again.

The location is spot on with some superb views over the bay from the rooms.
We found the staff to be really friendly and always very helpful.
The food was of top quality with plenty to choose from , cant really comment on the entertainment because we didnt see any , but by looking at the boards in the hotel there looked to be always things going on.
I would recommend this hotel and we will be returning.

| said: This is without question the most over-rated and over-priced hotel in Palma Nova.
The food at best is very ordinary and the dining-room staff are rushing around too much to have any contact with the guests.
There are insufficient sunbeds in the pool area and the uncontrolled morning stampede to get the towels on what there are is a disgrace.
Entertainment ranges from the excellent {Graham Powell- a singer/comedian}to the never ending bingo and old-time dancing, although the 2 young ladies organising the entertainment work extremely hard.
The position of the hotel is excellent, being right on the promenade and close to most of the local amenities, but after a refurbishment I understand it is going to be even more expensive for 2008.

| said: Apologies for putting this review in late, but better late than never.
When we arrived about 11am we were told that our room was not ready which was dissapointing, and we had to wait about an hour for it to be cleaned, when we got into the room which was on the first floor in the corner we found our balcony overlooked the roof of the lounge, but we could see the beach and sea ok, it had been done as a cactus garden and was very nice to overlook especially as it was home to a couple of cats and their 4 kittens, which proved delightful to watch them playing around.
The general cleanliness of the hotel was very good and they had recycling bins on the landings.
We enjoyed the food every day, there was plenty of choice at breakfast and dinner, with a different joint being carved every evening, and there was a large selection of desserts, which I plundered every night!.We compared the quality of the food to what we had eaten on several cruises and thought it was of a very high standard,The hotel is situated a few yards from the beach could not be better, there was even a gate for guests only to get on to the esplanade.
There was a varied amount of games during the day around the pool or on the beach, and we found the evening entertainment top notch although a lot of it was tribute bands,we even had Elvis in the house! The staff were very good in all areas, there was even 2 english people working there so it was good to talk to them as well.
We would definatly go back there again.

| said: My friend and I stayed at the Son Matias Beach for five days at the beginning of April.
We were a little concerned about the older clientele who frequent this hotel but our fears were unfounded as we met some really nice people whilst there and some had more energy than us!
The hotel is in a stunning location directly on a beautiful beach with all rooms having a sea view, the staff were extremely friendly and the entertainment was good.
The food was varied and for a fussy vegetarian like myself the food was superior to what I've had in 4star in other places. Loads of choice even porridge for breakfast and black pudding for meat eaters.
The only negative comments are having to pay for your fridge and television and the dining room was cramped as it was small.

| said: We were a little concerned that Palmanova and the Son Matias would not suit us as we could not go to our normal hotel in Cala Bona.
However, we found Palmanova to be really quiet in February.
The hotel is lovely in every way. Views from rooms are fantastic - looking straight out onto the sea. Food was extremely good - although very British, Roast Beef and Yorkshire puds!! The staff are very helpful, especially Laura the head of entertainments - she works tirelessly. There is a wide variety of activities and entertainment both day and evening - it does finish by 11pm - so no late rowdy nights!!
You do have to pay extra for tv, safe and fridge - but you can have whichever of these that you want.
The hotel was a little like an old folks home but some of them are extremely fit!! Put us younger ones to shame!
Would we return - I think we probably would - Palmanova in the winter must be a very different place from the summer months, it is also an attractive end of the island - more so that the Eastern end. Also great for visiting Palma.

I felt as though I'd landed in a very comfortable old folks' home. That's not being patronising - I'm in my early 70's but I've reserved Bingo and Old Time dancing for later in life.
The absence of children was a definite bonus.
Food was not always hot, even when we went early.
(And avoid those langoustines on the salad bar - I spent 4 days in hospital with food poisoning and I put it down to these little beasts!)
The staff are extremely friendly (in fact, everyone is!)and efficient.
I found the entertainment a bit amateurish (with the exception of Graham Powell, singer & comedian who was fantastic) but Entertainment Staff Laura & Katy worked very hard at it.
I thought the bar prices were a bit steep and I didn't expect to be charged for a TV and a fridge though I welcomed the kettle.

| said: Just returned from Majorca and a 2 week stay at the Son Matias which certainly lived up to its 5* reviews.
The weather was fine, the hotel was spotless, the food was excellent. And the staff – what can be said about them? They were toe curling friendly, eye wateringly kind and superhumanly efficient. Many of the guests return year after year and were greeted like long lost relatives at a family reunion.
Though recently retired I felt like a young whippersnapper amongst this doughty brigade who will clearly continue to overcome all obstacles for their winter break in the sun.
However, as with everything there is a down side to all this. I felt completely inadequate when it came to the daily tea dances. After a cup of tea and a bikky – the oldies were off Tango, Salsa, Foxtrot, Military Two Step, Fandango, Line Dances or whatever. There was no stopping some of them. We had a go at the Waltz but crashed and burnt at the first spin turn. However, all seemed to appreciate that we at least had a go. There were games on the terrace, more or less all day, from hoop-la to boules. ‘Killer’ darts took place in the bar and like all the games was clearly designed not to kill anyone. Many took part and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it – you could hear the shrieks of laughter and cheering a mile away in Magaluf. However, once again I felt reluctant to join in for fear of spoiling things. Either I would be too good at the games and tire of their adulation or be too bad and be overwhelmed by their sympathy. I couldn’t figure out which way it was likely to go. So, instead I got my kicks by being the only one to take a dip every day in the challengingly cold swimming pool. The gasps of shock from those around the pool were priceless – quickly followed by comments in the ‘oooh young man’ category and sympathetic references to my inevitably shrinking assets.
Otherwise all was peace and calm, the only real excitement came half way through the first week when someone dropped a plate in the restaurant. But, instead of cheers and table thumping, the butter-fingered miscreant was lavished with sympathetic words of comfort from those around and the debris was cleared in an instant. Peace returned and stayed until half way through the second week when all hell broke loose and it was all my fault! During dinner I noticed that a strange brown residue had appeared in the bottom of a bottle of water I had ordered. I felt a bit alarmed and at the same time rendered somewhat speechless. What to do? When the waitress next passed the table I pointed (pointed, mind – didn’t say a word) somewhat pathetically at the brown stuff in the bottle and this set in train a sequence of events straight out of a Monty Python sketch (you know, the restaurant one where Graham Chapman complains about a dirty fork). Before my very eyes, the restaurant manager (a lovely chap) was driven to the edge of a nervous breakdown and the waitress – an even lovelier lady ended up close to tears. Oh dear what a kerfuffle, I was only looking for some reassurance that my hair was not going to turn green!
Suffice it to say that I spent the rest of the week bowing diffidently and smiling nervously at anyone brave enough not to look the other way when they saw me coming. These guys wouldn’t complain if a doodle bug landed in their soup – I had clearly let the side down.
Would I return to the splendid Son Matias, yes of course I would (if they would have me back) but not until I had mastered a few tea dances, grown a stiff upper lip and learnt to behave myself. In the meantime, I’m going to send my mum – she used to shoot down doodle bugs in the war!
PS: My hair didn’t turn green!

| said: This Hotel was brilliant! The best bits for us were the views from the rooms right out on the beach front, Lovely! And No Children under 12.
The staff were very friendly and always made you feel welcome either in the Reception or the Dining room and bar. No special mentions as they all tried their best!!
The food was very good and no Brit could really complain as they tried their very best to provide the staple British diet of Fried breakfasts and Sunday roasts!! they also had theme nights where the staff dressed up and the menu included that countries fare, ie. Mexican and oriental.
We did not attend all the entertainment shows as we like to go out after dinner and seats were taken very early on! On the occasions we did attend it was very good, all tribute type acts and comedian/singer Graham Powell who was very good indeed.
All in all a very nice hotel and if we did go back to Palma Nova we would definitely try to stay there. Cannot recommend it highly enough, go and find out for yourself.

| said: Above all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Majorca and had a wonderful time. The hotel was lovely and clean and the staff were so polite (it was quite sickening at times!)The location was perfect with Magalluf a short walk up the road (a totally different world not for the faint hearted). The scenery from our balcony on the 8th floor was breathtaking overlooking the beach and promenade (although light sleepers may be slightly disturbed from night owls returning from Magalluf at 5-6am). The food was average (although we are a little picky) but if you get down to the restaurant earlier I daresay the food is much improved. The pool was great with plenty of games for everyone to enjoy. As for the entertainment, we didnt get to see any as we tended to go elsewhere in the nights. Have a chat to the Thomson Rep on site, who was a little dozy (might be because of the early airport transfers) as she can point you in the right direction.
The only real down side for us being in our early twenties was that the average age of holiday makers appeared to be over 60, and we were made to feel like we weren't meant to be there at times. I would say if you are young or young at heart to perhaps seek another hotel. I would recommend the Santa Lucia next door - seemed to be just as good but younger. Although this is a perfect base if you plan to get out and about to indulge in the Majorca night life.
Finally I was particularly impressed by the environmental policies, health and safety and disabled facilities within the hotel and resort.
PS Check out the Indian restaurant next door - well worth a visit

Location of hotel is perfect, food is excellent, hotel staff polite and friendly and the rooms are comfy and very clean with great veiws of beach and sea.
There were no tea dances as previously stated, but they did a quick line dance and euro bingo before the entertainment started. Excellent hotel will revisit.

| said: We stayed in the Hotel Son Matias Beach and had a very enjoyable holiday except for the entertainment. My wife and I are in our 70th year but found most of the entertainment suitable for a much older age group, tea dances are not everyones cup of tea especially when a similar programme opens the evenings entertainment, followed by bingo.
On two occasions the entertainment went to another extreme with the lurid flashing of their bits by well endowed ladies badly miming to extra loud music, then there were the drag artistes, I don't think any couples on holiday enjoy seeing men prancing about in dresses.
One evening my favourite football team were playing, the television was in an area at one side of the main dance area (other side of the bar), I asked if the sound could be turned up a bit only to be told it may upset the bingo players.
The bar needs an update, the drinks are kept in ice cream type fridges behind the bar so you couldn't see what was on offer, refridgerated glass fronted cabinets facing the customers would have made it possible to know what was on offer, no chance of a pint of guinness! I ended up with a Bud only because I saw someone else drinking one.
The food was good and a great selection, unfortunately the bacon was overcooked every morning, hard as nails so missed out there.
Would I go back again? Yes I would but the entertainment and the bar need sorting out, it was a bit of a pain going out most evenings for some decent nightlife.
This is a good hotel.

| said: This was our second visit to the Son Matias Hotel and we cannot praise this hotel highly enough. All the staff are extremely polite, helpful and friendly, as was Will the Thomson's rep. The hotel is kept very clean and is idealy situated for the beach, shops, bars and restaurants. The rooms have fantastic views across the bay.
We felt the addition to the restaurant since our last visit,of an outside eating area, is an excellent idea and it was lovely to eat our evening meal overlooking the promenade and beach, or to enjoy breakfast as the sun rose over the mediterranean.
The food was excellent, varied, hot, well cooked and presented. Infact as we enjoy a good fry up of a morning when on holiday, in our opinion, the Son Matias has the best breakfast anywhere. After eating so much food, we were far too stuffed to participate in the daytime activities, but those who did appeared to have a thoroughly good time.
The evening entertainment was also good and we enjoyed some very professional acts, and the entertainments team worked hard throughout the day and night to ensure everyone had a wonderful time.
Prior to going to the hotel we had heard comments about the age group of most of the guests, however, those of us who have grown wiser with age know how to party......
In short, we would highly recommend this hotel and if you want to go, book early to avoid disappointment as over half of the guests return year after year and who can blame them. Within four days of returning home, we had booked for next year.

| said: Nothing too much trouble, check-in method spot on - just pull up a chair and have a drink and the lead name in your party simply books all of you in without an uncomfortable queueing system.
Cleanliness - faultless.
Food excellent - if you can't decide from the huge choice placed in front of you there are plenty of eateries within 1 to 15 minutes walking distance.
Location - exit the main door for Terra Nova/Magaluf or force yourself past the poolside bar and snack area, exit the security controlled gate and you're on the beach in 2 (yes 2) seconds with a range of bars/restaurants in either direction within, quite literally, minutes.
Staff - faultless.
In-House Entertainment - can vary but in the main very good. If you've not done 'Pirates' or 'Son et Lumieres' then they're an expensive 'must do' but if you can't guarantee the best forward-looking seats you might find your neck twisted at 90 degrees so will feel some discomfort if you get a restricted view. As an aside, each of these venues removes any unfinished drinks/bottles of any kind from your person as you leave.
All in this is probably the best hotel in Palma Nova with really easy access to Magaluf and no noise from the Palma Nova youth scene - we're booked to visit again for the fourth consecutive year - we're in our mid-fifties and have never booked a consecutive hotel anywhere but here.
Hope this helps.

The hotel was very clean and posh from the front so we were pleased when we stepped off the coach! The inside was just as good food was good with weekly gala nights lots of variation.
The hotel was located just on the borderline of Palma Nova and Magaluf so you had the best of both worlds but you were just enough outside og magaluf not to be kept awake.
Staff and entertainment were both excellent and went out of there way to make sure you had a good time.
Highly recommended!!

We could not have chosen a better, more convenient hotel if we'd tried, it was the perfect solution to all our holiday needs. It suited age ranges, location, facilities, accommodation requirements.
The hotel provided all our requirements, we were on holiday with parents who did not want to over exert, the hotel provided wonderful standards of cleanliness,(the staff even cleaned external door handles,) excellent rooms on a low level as my mum is semi-disabled.
Good choice of food.
All staff were friendly and professional, Dan and Laura with their unbounded energy kept all entertainment varied and running smoothly.
The bar was easily accessible.
The pool area provided wonderful surroundings, which saw no need for us to use the excellent beach onto which the hotel backed.
Security was excellent.
There was a variety of age ranges from 16+ which ensured that noise was minimal during the night.
We were able to visit restaurants and bars in Palma Nova when we required.
The location of the hotel was just right not too far into the hustle and bustle of Palma Nova/Magaluf but near enough to be able to explore.
Only down point, Spanish football had not started so Hubby wasn't able to go with Toni (bar Manger, maybe next year). Thanks for a wonderful holiday see you July 2006 (already booked)

| said: We have just returned from this hotel & could not fault it. It may not be to everyone’s taste as it is unashamedly British orientated & although the choice of food is large it, again, is very British. Pensioners are the main age group catered for & it is adults only.
Gary & Laura, the two (British again) entertainment reps are excellent & are on the go from early in morning until closing time. Every evening there is a different show, with, admittedly varying degrees of professionalism, but all in all very good. Perhaps a negative is the fact that if you did not wish to see the evening show there is nowhere else to go but out. But there again there are plenty of bars & restaurants in the immediate area.
All the main staff speak very good English & are very friendly.
The rooms are of an adequate size with tea/coffee making facilities & hairdryer in bathroom. All rooms face the beach & have balconies.
The hotel has up to now been exclusively available through My Travel but will soon be Thomson only. We will undoubtedly go again in the future if the prices do not go up too much.

The main "down" side we found was the food ..... there was always a great selection & it was always well presented etc; but it was never hot!! We tried it on several occasions but gave up in the end & ate out most nights; breakfast was the same, again a great selection of foods but nothing hot!
A final thing I would say is that while we purposely booked the hotel because it was ADULTS ONLY, we expected to meet more people our age (in their 30s) but we the average age was about 60 & the entertainment caters for that age group.

| said: The hotel Son matias beach hotelis excellent the staff was lovely the only thing was thr drink was a bit expensive. the entertainment was also excellent and the games aroud the pool was a great way to get to know everyone.
The best thing also about the hotel was for adults only which is lovely just lying and relaxing without screeming kids all day.
We are going back next year again this will be our third time this hotel is a must.
