| said: Hotel Mediterranean is situated at the northern tip of Rhodes New Town and is in a fantastic position, just across a very quiet road from Elli beach and the absolutely huge Rhodes Casino. We stayed there for a week in early July 2004. Having looked at the location of this one and the Grand Hotel, I’d say that ours is in a better position by far.
The hotel is large (and therefore impersonal – though the staff are very helpful when necessary), very plush, with a lovely reception/bar area and a reasonable sized dining room, both of which are very efficiently air-conditioned. The pool is quite small and has practically no surrounding sun-lounger area. This is due to the hotel having no “grounds” around it. In fact, the architect has had to site the pool so that it sits mainly under the corner of the hotel building. So this hotel is definitely not for those who prefer to stay by the pool all day. The pictures on the hotel website are quite misleading as they give the impression that the pool is in a large area. However, most people will head across the road to the coarse sand and pebble beach and hire a couple of sunbeds and an umbrella for the day (7 euros!). The beach has the advantage of being sheltered from the very strong westerly winds yet allows just enough breeze through to keep temperatures comfortable. The beach is sharply shelving though, so isn’t really suitable for young children unless they are good swimmers. There are lots of convenience shops in very close proximity as well so it is easy to keep topped up with water, ice-creams etc. There are several Thai masseurs plying their trade on the beach and they do fantastic massages for very reasonable rates. I’d recommend you try them – we did several times.
We had a double room with a side-sea view and it was spot on. Large, clean, well air-conditioned, with plenty of storage space and a large, comfortable double bed. Every room has a small balcony but is quite adequate for 2 people to have a “sundowner”. There is also a mini-bar and tv in every room, with a good range of English speaking tv channels, including some very naughty ones! The bathrooms are smallish but nice. All have a hairdryer. We always had plenty of hot water available too. Our towels were changed every day without question.
We were booked in on a B&B basis. The breakfast was comprehensive, help yourself buffet-style, though it was the same menu every day. I dare you to try the sausages – black in colour and a very “unusual” flavour. Yuk. The coffee is excellent though.
