My first visit back after a 3yr break to The Bel Azur Hotel,in Hammamet, and I was delighted that all the staff had remembered me,and nothing had changed dramatically.they all knew my friend as she has continued going with other friends, our accomodation was excellent, the rooms are all on a par,and are comfortable, beds changed regularly and towels changed daily. The food has a very good selection, you certainly won't starve! Although you do tend to get a little bored with the food when you stay for 2weeks, but there are some excellent restaurants in Hammamet. The beach is wonderful, and as you walk into the sea,the small fish swim around your feet. The entertainment is the usual folklorn, snake charmer, belly dancers etc.But the 'Animation team', which consists of Joseph(animation boss),Anis 2nd in command, and a fantastic dancer, you need to see him'river dance'you just can't take your eyes off him!also Kias,Helmi,Adel,Issa Slim,& Mohammed who does a terrific 'Michael Jackson',they are all great fun, they work hard all day, doing Aqua aerobics, darts, volleyball, strech and tone, dancing lessons, such as Salsa,Hotel dance,Mambo,to name just a few, they even give arabic lessos if you require them, and entertain and dance all night!!! It was a fantastic holiday and we will certainly be returning very soon.I have read some reviews, and I am amazed, you go on holiday to relax, unwind, and have fun. Some people are just miserable, complain about everything, and quite frankly are rude.Your Holiday is what you make it,Thank you to all the staff,& The Animation team for making our holiday absolutely terrific,I may also add we are not teenagers.

The hotel is disgustingly dirty from the reception the restaurant. the rooms were really bad and is no-way a 3 star I would not give 1.
Food was ok but over cooked and cold and not very Tunisian.
Entertainment was a joke as they did nothing more than harrass you for money, one couple had thier bag stolen by one of them and she seen it and nothing was done. The guys were nothing more than gigalos but then the hotel was full of prostitutes.

the bel azur is filthy and the rooms are as basic as can be,this hotel desperately needs refurbishing asap.the food was ok but not very tunisian, catering more or less solely for the german visitors.
the waiters and bar staff were brilliant though all receptionists were absolutely awful and couldn't or maybe wouldn't speak english.
the entertainment in the evening consisted of the dreadful and very sleazy "animations team" jumping around the bar singing the birdy song and then later in the evening offering to arrange a prostitute for you!!. the open touting for business by prostitutes in the hotel bar disgusted us and made going in the bar almost impossible, however the royal next door is deserted and the bar doesn't tolerate such shady business so is a good retreat for non peverts.
the only saving grace for this hotel is its position sitting amongst glorious gardens above two great beaches.however great the setting though we did not feel safe staying at this hotel especially at night as we were constantly being pestered for money and sex by very strange and menacing characters every time we set foot outside the hotel room.

This has to be the worst hotel we have ever stayed had the misfortune to stay in.

The hotel is no way a 3 star, I would not rate it at all.

The reception area, restaurant and pool are in dire need of a good clean, it really was disgusting.

The rooms were truly awful, our bedding was covered in blood stains, the bathroom was shocking, the bath was covered in horrible dirty marks and there was mould all over the tiles and tiles falling off, the air con did not work.

We complained but got no where as the staff simply could not be bothered helping you in anyway, they just slagged us off in French which I happen to speak french very well so I knew what they were saying and they were calling us stupid westerners.

They were quite happy to take our money though! The food was awful and was always cold so we stuck to salads and even then a few of us landed up sick, obviously their hygiene is not what it should be.

The entertainment was really bad. You were constant annoyed by the "animation team" for money and drinks and they were always trying to come out with you at night, for a free ride.

We also had a number of things stolen, do not leave your phone or camera on the table or it will disappear and keep hold of your hand bag at all times.

Hotel is very dated and is in desperate need of repair. The Reception area is dirty and you stick to the carpets.

The Rooms were disgusting and there was mould all over the bathrooms. This hotel should be more on a 1 star than 3. The photo's you see in the brochure must have been taken at least 15 years ago. I’m sure the hotel was nice then.
Food was not up to standard, it was always cold and well over cooked though presentation was good, it’s a shame it did not live up to how it looked. And you were always waiting for plates, cups, etc etc.

The entertainment was worst than Butlins. The "animation team" were constantly harassing you and one of them went off with my wife’s hand bag, we did complain to the hotel but never got anywhere, we brought it up with our Rep but got nowhere either.

The hotel itself is very tired and dated. The decor is something of a 70's feel. The hotel is not very clean at all on arriving at reception we were sticking to the floor, never a good sign. We had to wait over 2 hours to get our room and were very dissapointed when we did, as the romo had cleary not been cleaned after the last guest. We complained but we did not get very far. The food was very basic and was pretty much the same each night and was responsable for giving us all a dodgy tum.
The entertainment was a farce and consisted of young men chatting up the ladies and not much else. We had to ask the bar staff to tell the guys to leave us alone as they were constantly pestering us, either for money or asking us if we wanted them to take us out, fat chance after reading many reviews and forums they are just after a free ride. We did have a great time in Hammamet and will certainly return for more shoes ! But we would not stay in this hotel again.

The hotel is nice and clean though a little dated. The pillows are terrible, really hard and we had a few disturbed nights and bad backs! The food was fantastic, plenty of choice and lots of local dishes, though sometime you did have to wait around for bowls and cutlery. Breakfasts were a little strange no bacon, mushrooms or sausages but the omlettes made up for that because they were to die for.
The hotel staff I found a little rude, off handed and unhelpful, however the maids were all lovely and very friendly. Evening entertainment was basic but ok and there isn't much to do on a night outside the hotel. My mother and I felt a little out of place on a nightime to go out as all the cafe's and bars are mainly filled with men.

My wife and myself stayed the BELL AZUR for one week we are both over the hill a bit. This hotel suited us down to the ground.

The only thing we complained about was the pillows as my wife is a poor sleeper the room maid as if by magic produced a topper soft one for her.

The food was super the orange juice i could have lived on, pancakes and omelette's made before your very eyes delicious.

The indoor pool five star + the sea view from it. Unfortunately the med was still cold until the last day. Beach service superb a lounger + cushion was virtually put beneath you when you got there then the drink waiter arrived.

The beach only 70 metres from hotel was clean at all times. The five star hotels each side of the Bel were for us not as friendly and to up market but enjoyed to permission to use them if we wished.

My only big problem was we only had one week

Stayed at the Bel Azur, this is our second visit and enjoyed it very much, have just booked for 7 days at the end of January 2007 for our birthdays.

This year (2006), I also found the dining room in the morning waiting for cups, saucers, cutlery etc. The food was plentiful, you never ran out but I did find they could not cope in keeping up in collecting the dirty dishes.
In 2005 we went in the third week of July which was busier than this year and there was no problems, I just presume they had not ordered enough plates saucers, etc.

The waiters, very friendly, perhaps at times familiar with you, but I call that old fashinoned service.

Pool side and beach side service very well attended, always happy to get your cushions and table for you.

The beach and sea just brilliant.

This is the first and last time we have stayed at this hotel. We have been to Tunisia three times and this hotel is without doubt the worst we have stayed at.

The room cleaning staff were superb the majority of waiters were very offhand to put it mildly. In the restaurant the choice and variety of food was very good the standard of hygene however left a lot to be desired in the week that we stayed only the top table cloth was changed that only at night, there was always a shortage of plates and cutlery, in the morning cups were at a premium the juices ran out and you had to wait for the machines to be filled up if you asked for a spoon for cereals you usually got a fork.

Other than that weather great, locals very helpful.

Just returned from a fantastic 2 week holiday at the bel azur in hammamet.this was our 2nd visit to this hotel and
We loved it as much this time as the first.

We had a fab room overlooking the beach and our maids were super as were all the hotel staff. Nothing was a problem and they went out of their way to make our stay as happy as possible.

Resturant very busy but food very varied and 1 night was served by the pool with a band. Very nice resturant opposite hotel-black and white great food served as late as you want.

Would highly recommend this hotel.

Felt we had to put in an up to date review of this hotel.

Clean and well maintained, also able to use the facilities of the entire "Azur" complex, so you have 3 of everything to choose from, plus indoor pool if it rains or is windy (oh yes!!) Obviously you eat in your own hotel morning and evening but otherwise, go where you want.

Staff were friendly, the hotel is slap on the beach and a 15-20 minute walf from the Medina in Hammamet.

Food, had plenty of choice but the nugget and chips brigade may struggle with the evening menu.

Didn't actually see any evening entertainment but the animation team were great and friendly.

There several tennis courst which can double as basketball or 5 a side and 12 year old son made much use of them, and whilst you are supposed to pay for a tennis session (there is a coach) a bunch of peopple booting a ball around was never questioned.

All in all you'd have to upset them to get these people going, treat the locals with the respect you'd expect and you'll get it back in spades.

I would imagine this hotel would have been fabulous in the 60's but it is now very tired and run down.

The rooms are quite shabby and in need of a total renovation as is the hotel.

The hotel staff were very pleasant and as helpful as possible.

I can't remark on the entertainment as we didn't see any, through choice, but we had heard good reports on it.

If you love cats then this is your place, they overrun the grounds and often scamper into the dinning room. We had the table dividers removed from the dinning room as the cat's had used the flower pots in them as litter trays, not a pleasant smell when you are eating.

There are no kettles in the room so don't forget to take a travel kettle. The water is so chlorinated that you think you are drinking the water from the swimming pool.

The majority of holiday makers here were Russians, they seemed very load and didn't like to queue at any time.

Brush up on your French as this helps a great deal, all the locals use this as a second language.

All in all we will not come back to either the hotel or the resort again, sad but true.

This was our third visit to the Bel Azure, the last time being 6yrs ago. We were most surprised to find nothing had changed.

The rooms were clean as was the whole hotel!

Plenty of choice with food but then again we only stayed one week.

We choose the Bel Azure because it is a fairly quiet hotel. My husband did have to complain about very and I mean very loud music around the pool area. You sit by the pool to chill out not to listen to the favourite music of the animation team playing full blast!!!!

Apart from that we had a really good time.

Just returned from a wonderful week at Bel Azur hotel.

Staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them.

Food was fantastic, such a wide choice every meal time, well cooked and presented.

The hotel was very clean in all areas, as was the pool, and the gardens were a delight. Rather a lot of steps to the beach, but well worth the effort to get to it with plenty of free sun beds.

Entertainment was very varied, water polo, aerobics, discos, caberet, belly dancing lessons and a disco for kids that they all enjoyed. No pressure to do anything if you just wanted to laze about.

My husband and I are both retired but we really enjoyed our time at Bel Azur and will certainly be returning there in the near future.

Hotel cleanliness was to a high standard with linen and towels changed daily and the room cleaned daily. Public areas were spotless. Restaurant and bar areas were equally clean and welcoming.

Hotel food was always to a high standard, in good quantity and with lots of choice, though the coffee left a little to be desired.

Located in its own complex which was gated with security staff in attendance.

Entertainment needs to move away from the bingo syndrome, though it was worth it just to hear the staff calling the numbers in eight languages - quite remarkable.

I would definitely visit this hotel again.

We arrived in Tunisia on 15 May 2004, I have to say my first impressions of Tunisia were not fantastic, however we travelled from Monastir with an open mind.

We arrived at the Bel Azur approx 1.5 hrs later and were greeted by bell boys!! A first for us, this greatly impressed I can tell you. Sorry if I am going into massive details but when I tried to find information about this hotel and Tunisia there wasn't alot around.

Anyway, the food was cooked to a very high standard, and I would class myself as a fussy eater, and what a variety! Although the same dishes are served on the same day weekly, I found there to be a wide chioce of vegetables - Fresh not the frozen rubbish some places in England deem to serve, ric,e at least 5 meat dishes, 1 fish dish and a choice of vegetarian dishes along with a large salad and desert section.

Breakfast does cater more to the continental side of things and I wasn't brave enough to try the bacon (I think it was belly pork?!?) but you have to remember this is Tunisia not the Costa Del Sol!! But there were fresh omlettes/eggs cooked for you in front of you to your liking, cereals with fresh milk and toast - plenty I think.

Well worth the £800 we paid for a fortnight for the both of us. The beach is adjoined to the hotel and only guests can use it although some locals did attend occasionally, it must be the novelty of seeing people sunbathing in May, as I would think they found it quite cool. It was a very nice 22-24 increasing to 30 by the end of our stay (2/6/04).

Tunisia/Hammamet would not appeal to everyone and we spoke to people with young children who said they would not come back mainly because it is not adviseable to walk anywhere outside the complex after dark and if you could the pavements are crooked and need some attention loose slabs etc and also there wasn't a large facility for children they did however say that the nursery during the day - provided by the hotel not tour operators was fab, this is not for me to comment as I do not have kids ao therefore do not have first hand experience.

I loved Tunisia and especially the Bel Azur so much so that we are returning this year towards the end of May, the staff are friendly but we found that the guests were also alot friendlier than we had met on other holidays, we made many friends and are looking forward to seeing them again in May, and also to making new friends.

I could rave about this hotel all day but all I can say is go and see for yourself because I read a lot of bad things about this hotel before going, but not only that some people were complaing about things when were there so this only goes to prove not everyone likes the same thing! But we LOVED it.

We had never been to Tunisia before and were warned about various things. Was a bit daunted about the amount of touts at the airport but if you say 'no thank you ' pleasantly enough they will leave you alone. Travelled what felt like hours and then we were presented with the 'Wow' factor. Even my daughter questioned whether we had been dropped off at the right hotel.

Bel boys, pleasant staff, lovely rooms and when we woke up the next morning we could not believe the view that greeted us from the balcony, it was fabulous.

The food was fab, the staff were fab and could never do enough for us, even the manager would do a morning circuit around the pool to see if all the guests were happy.

The entertainment was a bit bingoish but it's the same all over Europe as well.

I have been going back every three months since then, liked it so much I even married a Tunisian!!!

I have had five winter holidays at the Bel Azur. The service is excellent, as is the food and cleanliness.

Each year when I go I am greeted as an old friend by the staff and also by a lot of the other residents who, like me, go there every year. I meet people from France, Italy, Germany, Canada and all over the world and we all agree the Bel Azur has the best ambience of any hotel in Tunisia. The grounds of the hotel are large, it is on the beach, it is within walking distance of the town centre and I don't think it is possible to find anywhere better to spend a few weeks

This hotel is part of a three hotel complex run by the Orangers Group.
The highest grade Royal Azur, 5 star is one of the newest in Tunisia, and finished to a very high standard with service to match.

The Sol Azur, 4 star, is similarly lavish, though a bit dated, and its location is an error of planning, which does not distract too much from its charm.

The Bel Azur, 3 star plus, is a basic, comfortable, very clean and friendly hotel, which provides adequate comfort levels and a very good service in realms, except for the entertainment. As an older person, the emphasis on guest humiliation themes, child entertainment and Bingo, tends to wear a little by the third night, and shows little sign of change. In the other hotels are English style 'pubs' which have a very pleasant duet entertainment and a'belly dancer' of very high standard and decorum entertains late in the evening.

There are other 'folk' entertainments, snake charmers etc. on occassions.
The facilities of all hotels are open to all residents in the group, and unless you want appmering at a price, I would recommend staying at the Bel Azur for a reasonable cost £285 7 nights low season to £450 in the peak periods.
Being in the older developed part of town, about 10 minutes walk along the coast road north of the medina, the hotel complex is in a paradise of gardens, at their best in the spring late March to June, and so unlike the concrete sterility, now seen in the Hammamet Yasmine and Port El Kantaoui developements.

I have enjoyed these hotels for the last 10 years, and am diong myself no favours by sharing it with you. Let me know if I can offer further insights into this varied and fascinating country, which does not have the 'hang ups' of some of its North African. Middle East neighbours.
