We stayed for one week at the Iberostar Albatros Hotel in Cavtat (pronounced Savtat). It's only a few miles from the airport, and we arrived at the hotel only 30 minutes after touching down on the runway!

Even though the hotel is located on the final approach into the airport, we didn't find it disturbing. In fact, we enjoyed watching the planes coming in (most of the planes take off in the other direction, so you won't see/hear them).

There are two accommodation blocks in the hotel, with the Reception / restaurant in the middle of them. We given a room in 'B' block (B357), which gets the sun on the balcony in the morning. 'A' block gets the sun in the afternoon. If you want to get a view of the sunset from your room, you'll need to be in 'A' block.

The room was satisfactory - quite spacious, with a balcony overlooking the pool/sea. I'd recommend getting a pool/sea view if you can - it's a pretty special view. The bed was very comfy and they had all the usual mod cons you'd expect from a 4 star hotel. The air conditioning is switched on in July and August and was a welcome relief from the blistering heat.

There is a big restaurant and a terrace outside, where we ate our breakfast and dinner. They serve breakfast from 6am until 10am, and dinner from 6.30pm until 9.30pm. The food is very good and there's a huge variety to choose from. We don't usually like to go half board because we like dining in local restaurants, but we were pleasantly surprised by the food here.

The entertainment was okay - it was geared up for kids really, which isn't surprising at this time of year. The staff run an entertainment programme during the day, which we didn't get involved in, and at night they have a kids disco at 8.30pm, and at 9.30pm the adult entertainment starts (two shows per week and other things such as quizzes on the other nights). Everything wound down very early and most people had disappeared from the bar by 11pm.

Immediately next to the hotel are a few bars/restaurants. Our favourite bar, where we watched the amazing sunsets from 'our table', was Caffe Eve, which was located adjacent to the Domizana restaurant. A large beer (half a litre) here cost 15 kuna - approx. £1.50. For a more lively bar, head to Beach House Cool a few yards further towards the Iberostar Epidureus, which had live bands and attracted the younger, trendy tourists/locals (maybe our scene a few years ago!).

There's a water sports centre located within the Iberostar Hotel Epidaurus - a few minutes walk away - where we hired a small boat for the day for 450 kuna (about £45). We went along the coast to Plat / Mlini and then across to Supetar, an island off Cavtat, around the peninsular at the back of Hotel Croatia and finally around the harbour where the centre of Cavtat is located. It was nice to get away from the crowds for a day!

You can get a boat from outside the hotel to the centre of Dubrovnik. The first boat from Cavtat was at 9am (this was often full as it started from the centre of Cavtat). They run pretty frequently during the day and last one left at 7pm. The cost of 50 kuna single (£5) and 80 kuna return (£8). The boats were extremely busy and some people had to stand for the journey (just over one hour). There's also a tourist bus which runs from outside the hotel to Pile Gate in the centre of Dubrovnik - this left at 9.15am and 10am, and returned at 3pm, I think. There's also the number of 10 bus, which runs from the centre of Cavtat to Gruz Harbour, where you have to change to get to Pile Gate. It was blistering hot when we were there, so we used the boat and got a taxi back one evening (200 kuna one way).

The hotel's located about 20 minutes walk from the centre of Cavtat, which was really pretty. At night you can sit in one of the many bars/restaurants opposite the huge and very expensive yachts moored up there and people watch. Our favourite bar was Ancora, where the wine was only 120 kuna (£1.20) a glass. One evening we ate at the Dalmacija and the food/service was very good.

We had hoped to dine at Konavoski Komin or Konavosik Dvori, which came highly recommended, but unfortunately we just didn't have the time. Maybe next time...!

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Albatros and I will try and give readers some up to date info for 2006. Firstly, anyone who wants to go to this hotel please look at doing it yourself. We booked the hotel direct with www.iberostar.com for £1000 for 2 of us. The flights I booked with www.ba.com from Manchester for £307 for 2 of us. The previous week the price had been £211 but the hotel prices were not on line at the time. The only downside was that I had to pay for everything in January when booking. Holiday Options and Balkan Holidays both wanted around £1765 for the same deal!!!! I then arranged taxi transfers with www.taxiservicedubrovnik.com or email Tomislav at www.tomislav@taxiservicedubrovnik.com . The service he provided was great, his driver met us at the airport with a name card. The cost was 80HK each way.

Dubrovnik airport is small and well organised. We landed at 11am and were in the hotel foyer by 11.30!

The Albatros is as good as everyone says. The bed was 6ft wide, the shower was excellent. I had asked for a top floor room as near to the sea as possible. We were in A427 which faced the pool and the sunsets! Marvellous. The bathrooms have a heated towel rail and hairdrier. You get a safe, satellite TV, air-con and mini-bar (empty) all at no extra cost. The maid was in daily changing the towels and linen almost every day. Everywhere was clean and nice. Reception staff were excellent, providing a fruit basket and birthday cake for my husband when I asked at no charge. Excellent choice of food and pleasant staff and dining room.
You can pay a 100HK deposit for a pool towel card and then get a clean pool towel whenever you like. You get your full deposit back at the end. The sunbeds are mega. They are strong and plenty big enough for my 6ft 3in husband. You also get free mattresses. If you want to swim in the sea you can walk across onto the beach, have a swim and still come back to your sunbed.

Betweeen 4 and 5pm it is happy hour and cocktails are 20HK. Free aperitifs are served on Thursday when it is Dalmation night. The snack bar is very reasonable with a mixed sandwich or toastie being 15HK and Coke 14HK. The tap water is safe to drink - we did with no ill effects. There is a little shop in the foyer selling gifts, sweets, beach goods etc.
I must also mention the Star Friends who are brilliant. They work really hard and not many people were joining in really. Mainly the clients were elderly when we were there and many different nationalities. No chavs. The Star Friends are really good linguists and try really hard. Maya has such an infectious giggle, she was great.
There is all the info you need in the foyer regarding buses to Dubrovnik etc. You have to walk to the village for the public bus No 10 which is 12HK each way. If you look where you are going you can get off the bus just as you are entering Dubrovnik and going down a hill. You can then cross the road and walk down to the Old Town (Stari Grad) through the old narrow streets. It takes about 10 minutes and all downhill. Saves you having to go to the bus terminus and get a connection. We did this twice and caught a water taxi back (50HK), (80HK return). Buses and boats run frequently. There is also a tourist bus service from the Hotel at 09.15 and 11.15 I think (20HK) which returns at 15.00 but we never tried this.
It now costs 50Hk to walk the walls. Several of the museums and monasteries also charged this.

There Rubikon car hire in the foyer. The staff speak excellent english. They were very keen for us to have a Nissan Almera, perhaps this is all he’s got. Anyway I dont think the price was too bad for Croatia at £188 for 4 days but this was including everything and the extra insurance you need if you are going to Montenegro. He wanted cash so we had to go to the bank to get it (he said we could pay when we returned the car! You have to keep the headlights on all the time in Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia. Ours had inadvertently been turned off and we were pulled over by the police in Kotor. There’s loads of police about. He wanted €50 and when my husband said we hadn’t got it (we’d only taken €30) after a while he came down and accepted €20 and put it in his back pocket (no ticket). Apparently this is quite a common occurrence and they always try to get more money out of you.

The Hotel and the rooms were very clean with maid service and towels changed every day.

The food was very good and in abundance, breakfast had the usual mix of cereals, fruit and cooked english. There was also a chef cooking omlettes and pancakes to order.

There was plenty of choice for the evening meals. I was really surprised by the choice of vegetables and they were not overcooked. The meat dishes were really well cooked and tender and plenty of desserts

If you want a quiet holiday then the location would be good for you.

The staff were polite and efficient. we had a problem with the safe in our room and it only took 5mins for somebody to come up an sort it out.

As for the entertainment it was the usual daytime activities the 'star friends' did their best but as the majority of the guests were Mature did not receive a very enthusiastic response.

There was a mini disco on an evening but as we went out most evenings I cannot comment further.

Lovely, friendly hotel, excellent food and stunning location. Entertainment could have been better, this could have been due to the end of season.

Overall really enjoyed our stay and look forward to going back.

Stayed at the hotel Albatros in Sept this year with our 3 year old son.

This is a wonderful hotel, very modern and very very clean.

Room is big with a small balcony but a fantastic view. Large modern bathroom and great shower.

Very spacious lounge and bar areas.

Excellent facilities, great pools, playground and lots of out door activities.

We stayed half board and food very varied and excellent.

Hotel staff very friendly and helpful.

Location excellent beautiful walk to centre of Cavtat about 10 mins, great restaurants and very little tourist shops, beautiful walks around the sea.

The hotel entertainment is very good, our child was the only child in the hotel as it was Sept and the entertainment team still put on a mini disco every second night and dressed up and danced with him.

We loved this hotel, the staff and the resort.

The tours were great.

We stayed at the Hotel Albatros in the beginning of Sept for our silver wedding anniversary and had a wonderful time.

The room we had was a suite with 2 balconies one overlooking the sea the other the pool. The facilities were 1st class.

There was plenty of choice for meals either hot or cold.

The local bus picked us up outside the hotel and took is into Dubrovnik or you could catch a boat outside the hotel. We also hired a car from the hotel for a day to get a taste of the area.

I think we timed it perfectly for a couple break as it was the 1st week back at school so not too many children about.

Hotel Albatros was spotless, air conditioned throughout, and with a stunning west facing view out across the bay from the dining room and main terrace and pool areas (the sunsets were really beautiful).

Staff were polite and attentive without being gushy, and enjoyed trying to teach us a few words in Croatian when asked!

The entertainment is all put on by quite a young group of people, who alternate between providing games, child minding and keep fit during the day around the poolside (none of which are forced upon you), and then appearing as the dancing/miming cabaret acts in the evening - very sweet but not overly slick! But for us that was part of the charm of the place - nothing was too over the top or 'plastic'.

Half board was a bit repetitive on the buffet style meals for us.

This is a wonderful hotel, the cleanest I have ever stayed in, everything gleamed! The staff and entertainment team were so friendly. The entertainment was OK, they worked really hard but it was early in the season and I should think there would be more on in high season. The food was good, a lot of variety and HOT plates. The hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from the village, from where you can get buses or boats for trips, and there are some lovely walks round the "fingers" of land that make up Cavtat. All rooms have a sea view so no extras to pay for. There is internet access at £3 for an hour, logging on and off as you please, in the hotel. They supply pool towels so no need to take them. There is a fridge in the rooms and you can drink the tap water - we did and it tasted great, unlike UK water - ugh. What a civiled country, when can I go again?
