| said: we arrived at this so called 4 star, it reminded me of a 1960s holiday camp, the room was dark and dingy, the pool had plastic chairs and bunting around, the reception, old worn furniture, dirt tablecloths, not what we expected. having stayed at a 3 star in phuket at christmas this was no were near as good, so much so we asked to be moved straight away, thomson use another company as their reps here, and it was very hard to get things sorted, but we went to the amari which was everthing and more that you would want from a 4 star, as a last min. cheap break away this place would be ok, but if you want proper 4 star then keep away

| said: The Chaba Cabana is a lovely hotel, the rooms have more of an apartment feel than a hotel room and are extremely spacious I found the large fridge particularily useful for after sun, water etc. The beds are huge and although hard I found it very comfertable.
The maid service is very good although they occasionally forgot to replace the tea and coffee making facilities but there was always someone around to ask and they appeared almost immediately. The breakfast is served from 6.30 til 10.30 which is ideal for both early and late risers. The food selection is very good including pancakes, omlettes and eggs all made freshly to order.
The staff are all very helpful and extremely friendly. We didnt experience much of the entertainment but it seemed fairly low key. The hotel was very quiet in the evenings as everyone either seemed to stay in their rooms or head in to town. The first week we were there the hotel was apparantly full but did not seem crowded or too busy and there were still plenty of sunbeds available on the beach.
I would definately recommend this hotel to anyone as it is in an ideal location being on the beach and near the nightlife of Chaweng whilst still maintaining a quiet and peaceful atmosphere.

| said: The Chaba Cabana is a 3 (ish) Star hotel located to the North of Chaweng Beach – away from the noise and bustle of the town and the over-flying aircraft noise.
At the time we visited (March / April 05 following the Tsunami) Samui and the hotel were very overcrowded, which did not enhance our experience. Whatever the reason, hotels which overbook are not at the top of my list when service and satisfaction are concerned. Hotels which take money and then ‘farm out’ guests to other establishments are a no-no.
Rooms are adequate but on the small side with a lack of hanging and drawer space. The beds are very firm – although this was quite to our taste.
The staff members were, generally, helpful and friendly but, whilst I accept that my knowledge of the Thai language is extremely poor, communication was difficult at times as some of the staff did not speak English at all well.
The food at the Chaba was a bit of a let-down. Breakfast was buffet style. Both continental and English style items were on offer, but ‘indifferent’ quality was my best impression. We used the main restaurant for both ‘a la carte’ and ‘themed’ menus. In general terms the ‘themed’ menus were of reasonable quality and value. Our experience of the ‘a la carte’ menu (and we ordered Thai food) was that the food was poor, the service (especially the language problem) was poor and the value extremely poor. In fact we are still waiting for one item from the menu, although the management did provide a free ‘themed’ meal because of the bad experience.
Beach restaurants (inexpensive) are available within a short distance. Restaurants serving good food can be found in Chaweng and Bophut – not a great distance away by songtaew or taxi.
The pool area was, being generous, cramped. The pool was very small, the swim up bar was equipped with a bell – with which to summon a waiter from the main bar! The poolside bar (which also was the main bar) was small.
On the up side – the spa was reasonably priced and very high quality. Whilst part of the spa ‘pavilion’ was in need of renovation, this detracted very little from the experience. My wife (the expert) rated this very highly and good value for money. Whilst massage is available a short distance away on the beach the standard was not what we had experienced in other parts of Thailand.
Entertainment was usually coupled with a 'theme' buffet and was fairly good - local dance, 'Lady Boy'shows, etc. The house singer, who performed at the a'la carte restaurant, was superb!
The hotel was kept reasonably clean. It is decorated in a rather incongruous ‘tribal’ design, but we soon got used to this.
Would we recommend? – unfortunately no.
Please note that this is an opinion only, based upon personal experience March / April 2005.
