| said: We booked this holiday independently via the internet, and before booking the hotel, I looked on various review sites, and the Veramar had a mixed bag of reviews.
Firstly, what are people complaining about? We paid £22 a night and stayed here for 10 nights. Where else could you get for that kind of price? I can appreciate the complaints if you paid a lot more than this, as it does have some negative points. But, what do you want for the price? The Ritz?
For transferring from the airport to the hotel, we got a train from the airport (have some euro coins in change available for the machine) to Fuengirola, which cost €1.80 each, then got a taxi from the station to the hotel, which was about €6.
LOCATION: The hotel is in a semi-residential area. One reviewer complained that she got stared at when she came out of the hotel; well we got none of that. There is a supermarket very close by, plus a fishmongers, tabacs and an internet cafe virtually next door. There are also some nice bars and restaurants close-by if you can’t be bothered to walk far.
The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the beach, and 10 minutes walk to the edge of the main centre. The main centre being quite large.
HOTEL: The hotel is 9 storeys-high, but Fuengirola is littered with multi-storey complexes anyway. There are two pools, one small child/baby pool, plus a larger pool. Both pools are reasonably warm, although not heated. There are some comfy sun-loungers with cushions around the pool. There are no parasols, but there are plenty of shady areas to lay, should you wish.
Our room was on the 8th floor. The actual door to the apartment is quite pretty, carved wood! When you go into the apartment, you enter the kitchenette area. It consists of cheap, plasticy cupboards, a standard two-ring cooker and fridge with small freezer compartment and a microwave-combo-grill. There are enough utensils, plus a sharp knife, and a bread knife. There was no corkscrew, luckily we took our own. There was also a tin-opener, but one of those old rubbish ones, luckily – again – we came prepared. There were no teatowels, but we also took one of those! There was a kettle, plus a teapot. There were enough plates and a couple of bowls. There was very limited space, though, to prepare.
On our left, there was the bathroom, which was small, but adequate. There was a shower in the bath, which worked adequatley, with plenty of hot water. There were a few towels in various sizes, which were changed every three days.
The main area in the studio had a table with two chairs, a reasonable-sized wardrobe, a good-sized cabinet, a very comfy rocking chair in the corner, plus the two single beds we pushed together, plus one bedside cabinet. The bed linen was changed every 5 days.
The balcony was small, but adequate for our needs, and had a plastic table and two chairs. The tiling on the balcony wall was really lovely. The balcony over-looked the pool, and had a sea-view also, although this was partly obscured by other high-rises. The balcony had the sun in the morning, but was shaded in the afternoon, which was nice if you needed to cool off. Most of the apartments had a sea and pool view, but a couple on each floor didn’t, so I would recommend requesting the pool/sea view when you book as it is much nice.
Positives:
CHEAP!!!
The staff were courtious and resolved one or two of our small issues. They spoke good English, certainly better than my Spanish.
It is clean, the pool area and pool are clean.
Far enough away from the main area, so it was reasonably quiet. But close enough to walk or cheap taxi ride.
Negatives:
The beds aren’t greatly comfortable, but are just about acceptable. I would not recommend them if you have a back trouble though. They are also very creaky!!
There weren’t many sun loungers, and despite the rules saying not to book them with a towel, the saddo’s still did.
The kitchen area is v small, but you can manage.
The apartments could generally do with a lick of paint/touch-up here and there.
Generally speaking, if you are on a budget, this place is great value. It’s clean and is a great base. If you have more money and want luxury, go elsewhere.

When we arrived at the appartments at 3am we were greeted by a friendly guy who even got us some bottled water etc. We were showed to our appartment and was very surprised at what we found. The appartment was spacious, spotlesslessly clean and very nicely decorated. After having a sleep we then went and bought some drinks etc. We then found that the fridge wasnt working. I went to report it and within 30 minutes the repair man had been, found that the fridge was no good and had a brand new one installed. Thats what i call good service. The staff at this hotel were very friendly, helpful and would go out of their way to assist. We are booking to go back next year with our 4 teenagers.

| said: There are reports on here from people saying that this hotel is rubbish and they'd never stay there again and couldn't wait to get out etc. etc., and because of these people I had doubts about going to stay at the Veramar, and it did stop me from fully looking forward to it. So I'm writing this report to reassure people who feel the same as me after reading the reports on here (apparently by Victor Meldrew's closest friends!).
Firstly, these people probably paid an extremely reasonable price to stay in these apartments... I know we did, as our entire holiday (flights with Jet2.com, hotel booking with Triton rooms, airport transport in the UK and agent commission) cost less than £700 for two weeks (it costs £50 on average a night to stay in a Travel Lodge in some scummy English towns!!!!... throw in flights and the sun and you've done very well!). So I personally think that the people who have written negative reports about this place have absolutely no concept of value for money and expect to get a 5* hotel when they've paid for a 3*.
The pool area is fine: clean and tidy, and nobody got ill from swimming in it (unlike other hotels I have stayed in which cost a lot more money!). The hotel rooms are basic but, again, clean and tidy and the towels and sheets are changed every two days. There is no air conditioning, but we went to reception to enquire about hiring a fan and they actually let us have it for free, therefore the hotel staff are fine, their English is certainly not as advanced as many hotels I've stayed in, but I believe that it because it's mainly the Spanish who stay at the Veramar except in the Summer months.
There is NO ENTERTAINMENT whatsoever at the hotel - therefore it's probably not ideal for families with children (especially young ones) as you have to totally entertain yourself (which was perfect for us, as we like to do our own thing and not spend much time in the hotel anyway... and I loved not having kids running past when I was sunbathing and soaking me with water after they'd just been in the pool!) Also - this is the best hotel I've stayed in in terms of sunbed use, we got there the first day and got 2 sunbeds at 11am (in every other hotel we've been to, there have been people who merrily get up and decide to reserve 40 sunbeds for their family of 5 at 8:30am!) which I thought was brilliant, this continued for most of our two week stay until some over-enthusiastic sunbed reservers arrived, which meant we had to reserve them about 9:30-10am (still not bad!)
The hotel is about a 5-10 minute walk to the beach, and around a 15-20 minute walk to the main pubs and restaurants (depending on how many shandies you've had!) so I'd say it was very well located, as being too close to the resort centre would probably have meant a lot of noise and, since the hotel is located in a residential area, the noise is absolutely minimal.
Food and drink in Fuengirola is very reasonably priced: glass of wine is 2.50euros, a 4 course Chinese meal is 5.50euros(go to China town in the square: walk along the front until you get to a cafe called Scoffers and then turn right, and you'll find the square in which there are much nicer restaurants than you'll find on the front) and a 3 course meal at a traditional restaurant called La Gondola (lovely food, across from China town!) is 6.90euros. We also found a nice Italian restaurant called O Mamma Mia's, also located across from the Chinese. Go to London Pub after your meal, that gets busy from around 11pm and has a DJ and a pool table and cheap drinks, and most of the staff are English and very friendly. There's also a really nice ice cream parlour down the road from the Veramar on the way to the beach which has every flavour you could possibly think of, it's called Heladeria 900 and a cone is 1.90euros so it's very cheap.
There's a really good supermarket down the road from the Veramar, called Cayetano, which is cheap, and there's also an Exchange Bureau opposite which is very conveniently located and commission free for Sterling traveller's cheques.
As another review says, go to SAMS bar for your fry-ups, they do full English in three different sizes starting from only 3.10euros (they also do beans on toast, eggs on toast etc.). The Veramar does do a buffet breakfast for 4euros which we had on our last morning as we had to get a taxi to the airport at 9:30am and so wouldn't have had time to go to one of the cafes on the front, which don't start serving until 10am. The breakfast was fine, nothing special but we didn't expect it to be (it was actually better than I'd anticipated!)
I hope this sheds a more optimistic and realistic light on the Veramar: to sum it up, you get what you pay for and this is an absolutely fine 3* aparthotel.

| said: Booked these apts for a 3 day break and paid only £54 for the 3 nights for both of us.
Location
The apts are located in a residential area but are only 5 minutes from the seafront. Large Supermarket only 3 minutes away. They are also only a good ten minutes walk from the train station.
We got a taxi to the apts from the train station for 5 euros as we were not sure where they were, but coming back we walked to the station, but as we only had the one case not a problem.
Building
Differing types of rooms are available when booking, studios and rooms, so if you want self catering facilities make sure you do not book a studio.
You get a microwave, electric hob but no toaster, did not bother us as it is very cheap to eat out.
They do breakfast and dinner at 4 euro or 8 euros, tried the breakfast but only the once, far better deals on front, try S.A.M.S, excellent value.
In what is known a Fish Alley there are loads of places offering set menus and are excellent value, try Ciane Chinese restaurant 5.35 euro for 4 course meal.
Rooms
The room was clean and towels were excellent, bed a bit hard though but minor issue.
Two lifts, but one was out of order, ensure you get a room on front however, we had 812 and gave us a sea view (inbetween the buildings that is) and overlooked pool.
Some rooms on the side I would not have wanted you look out onto an apartment block with washing hanging out.
Website showed pool area with sunbeds but there were no sunbeds round pool area and pool is surrounded by two grass areas not that inviting.
For what I paid no complaints, but it is not much more expensive to book a 3 or 4 star hotel to be honest, certainly on the site I used.
The train from Malaga airport is excellent, runs straight into Fuengirola, stops at various points on route and takes about 35 minutes, at just 1.80 euro and runs every 30 minutes, if you are going to use train though make sure you have some coins, as you buy ticket from a machine and also ensure you retain your ticket when arriving in Fuengirola, as you need it to get through barriers.
I would not have wanted to spend 7 nights here but for a 3 night break very good value, provided you get a good flight deal.

The staff on reception weren't very helpful just gave us our key and that was it find your own way.
Wouldn't recommend it to anyone else in my mind it needs closing and a full refurbishment.
The location was the best part about the hotel

| said: We booked 2 one bedroom apartments as 2 studios were unavailable at the time. 2 adults in one and my daughter and her 2 children in the other (her partner couldn`t get time off work)we had so much space we spent most of the time in one room.we arrived just after dark and found the lobby a bit din, small and uninviting.
The receptionists were ok but when we took our cases up the outdoor corridors were dark as the lights turn off automatically after a minute and we didn`t know where the switch was so we fumbled along to our rooms.
Not a good first impression but the rooms were lovely with a lot of colourful tiling and very clean. Breakfast was 4 euros but inedible so we didn`t try the lunch @ 6euros.the restaurant across the road was much better. The tiled pavements in the area have seen better days so looks a bit shabby with a fleet of skips along the road which i did find usefull some times.
There was also a homeless old lady camped outside. The restaurants opposite the local supermarket were better than any tourist ones on the front or the `food row` one block in from port.
The tobacco shop opp supermarket was the cheapest in town too. There are 3 zebra crossings to beach (about 5 minutes walk)the cars dont stop unless you are in the road!.

| said: In my opinion, you get what you pay for... and for what we paid for this hotel I honestly can not find one fault with the hotel.
We paid £80 for 4 nights in October through www.lastminute.com. We got off the train and as there were no taxis started walking towards the hotel.
On arrival i was a bit disappoined by the outside of the hotel (and the pool but in October it wasnt warm enough for the pool - i could imagine this would be too small in summer though but this is the only negative point i could find!)
The room wasn't large but it had a small kitchen with a hob (an old fashioned kettle you use on the hob), a fridge, sink and loads of cupboards!
The bedroom was 2 twin beds, with a welsh dresser (crockery, glassed etc), a table & 2 chairs. There was a small bath with shower, toilet, sink etc. Also there was a balcony with a table and 2 chairs! It was perfect and for £20 a night i dont think we could of expected as much... we were both impressed.
The rooms were made up & towels changed 3 out of the 4 days we were there. I dont know the reason why it wasnt on one of the days but it didnt matter to us.
The location of the hotel was fine- we were really near the castle de solail (hope spelt right) and not that far from the beach. there was a nice restaurant on the corner of the hotel which i thought was great as one day we had walked for miles.... and not looking for somewhere to eat was a great idea!
There was a shop just round the corner (ideal as we were self catering and also a bread shop just across the road!!)
I would definately go back to the hotel - as long as it was out of season!

| said: This is the second time we have visited the Veramar. On both visits we found the rooms adequate and good value for the price we paid.
They were clean and the cleaners visited most days. We had clean bedding changed twice during our stay and the towels were changed on most days. There is a good supermarket in the next block and the local bars are friendly and offer good value food & drinks.
The position is ideal for accessing the main coastal road for touring the area and a nice beach is only 5 minutes walk away (watch out for the traffic). The new shopping centre is also 5 minutes walk.
The staff have always been friendly and helpful. You only get what you pay for and this is good value for money budget accommodation away from the main tourist drag.

| said: The hotel was a good 5 minutes walk away with many main roads to cross to the centre, the pool was very small, and seemed to be full of spanish locals every day that didnt even seem to be staying at the hotel. I found the bar / reception staff very arrogant and unhelpful apart from the cleaners who did a good job. As we booked independantly we asked for some advice on where train/ bus station was, again no help just given leaflets for excursions and car hire that was no good.
When arriving at the hotel we gave our voucher in and the man on reception just slammed down the key and walked off, no hola, how are you, this way to your room etc. All in all the hotel was ok apart from the staff and the terrible location, far more than 500 metres as seen in brochures, every time you walked past the shops to the resort centre you were stared at like you were an alien by the locals which isnt very nice when you are boosting their economy.

| said: The apartments are in a Spanish Residential Area and are popular with Spanish guests.
There is a lot of noise on weekends from the M1 Cafe bar which is open until 4a.m. The hotel also accepts pets in the rooms but these did not bother guests.
The restaurant is only open for private functions but there is a pool bar offering snacks.
There is a large supermarket within a minute offering a good range of British foods, but some of the rooms in the block do not have any cooking facilities.
The beach is a ten minute walk across a very very busy main road. The resort centre is approx a 20 minute walk away.
I would not recommend this hotel for families as there are no facilities for children and the pool is only very small.
The staff are friendly and polite but the entertainment is virtually non existent.

Reception were very friendly and the rep was there when we needed her! So don't be put off by other reviews, if you just want somewhere simple, close to everything! I fully recommend it!

The first room we were allocated had no bedding for the spare bed, as we arrived late in the evening we had to cover our grandson with bath towels etc, only two towels in the bathroom, 1 dining chair, hardly any light bulbs.
So at the reps meeting we asked the rep to put things right she was not a bit interested just told us to report it to the duty manager which we did, on coming home from a full day out found nothing had been done, went to see a different duty manager who told us to change rooms which were a lot better, but we were not pleased with the hotel for the duration of our stay thankfully it was only a week.
The Airtours Rep never spoke to us again, on return to the UK complained about her really being a bad Rep and got £25 per person refund, the hotel was not too clean and left a lot to be desired.
