Goa
16 Nov-1st Dec 2007
This has been the best holiday my hubby and I have ever had! All the reports and queries I asked for certainly lived up to their expectations.
First of all the flight going out there wasn’t as long as I expected, which was a bonus. We flew with Monarch and it got us there.
Arriving at the airport in Goa wasn’t actually as bad as some people made out. It only took an hour. The reception coming out of the airport was horrendous, you cannot get away from the porters; you may as well give in and give them a £1 to take your cases. They will try to ask for £5 just refuse and hand them £1.
The journey to Nanu was pretty quick it took about 35minutes, only one drop off elsewhere. First impressions of the Nanu – “this is not bad!” It was clean, welcoming and pretty. Check-in was quick and porters took our bags to our room, another £1 each.
The room was lovely and cool, slightly above basic I would say. The beds are hard but that suited us. Plenty wardrobe space, big toilet/shower/wet room, large bedroom and a balcony with chairs and table. All you need.
The food as has been mentioned before, is not so good. The breakfast is the best meal. We ate out most nights at Sundowner Shack, Martin’s and Pentagon, which was all recommended and was great.
The beaches are fantastic, clean, warm clear blue sea, just like in all the brochures.
The local people are very happy and welcoming. They seem to prefer the British tourists who are friendlier and we do tip! The Russians have discovered Goa! They on the other hand are rude, arrogant and do not tip! In fact they were even haggling over the price of their meals, which I may add are cheap anyway.
The seafood is out of this world, huge lobsters, giant prawns and the tastiest fish, try Pomfrit, local fish. If you are like me and don’t like to see the head of fish on your plate they will fillet it. The drinks are cheap also. Bacardi and diet coke 150 rupees (less than £2) and that’s a double! Try Massa, it’s mango juice produced by Coca Cola in a coke shaped bottle only 20 rupees! (25p) my husband drank several a day!
As I’ve already said this has been the best holiday we have ever experienced and we are planning to return next November.

| said: Over the years we have stayed at numerous hotels throughout Goa and this was our second visit to the Nanu Resort within the past two years. I must say that this is one if not the very best 3 star hotels in Goa.
All of the staff are extremely friendly, polite and very attentive and have been trained to very high standards, better than some of the 4 star hotels we have stayed at in the past. Nothing is too much trouble for them and if they are unable to assist you personally, they will immediately find someone who can help you. The cleanliness throughout the hotel and general appearance of the resort itself is also to a very high standard for Goan hotels.
All rooms are air-conditioned and also have a fan and multi-channel TV. Towels and bed lined are changed daily and are beautifully soft and clean, not grey and hard as some other resorts. Rooms are also thoroughly cleaned on a daily basis.
The food at the hotel is overall very good and they try to accommodate all tastes.
Breakfasts: These are superb with a choice of porridge, cornflakes, fruit, fruit juice and eggs in whatever way you want them cooked (omelettes of all descriptions cooked to order in front of you). Also baked beans and delicious grilled tomatoes each morning. You also have a choice of ham, bacon or sausages, which are rotated on a daily basis. As the hotel also caters for Indian guests, there is usually a choice of local dishes available at breakfast.
Lunch: There is an excellent choice of snacks and meals are available for all tastes.
Diner: The soups are really delicious and you also have a choice of salads and plenty of main course dishes to choose from. Sweets are usually fruit salad and a one other choice. If that is not sufficient, you also have a full a la carte menu if required. Some form of entertainment is provided most evenings.
Beach: The beach is within 100 yards of the hotel and swimming in the shallow water is reasonably safe with virtually no under current. There is usually a lifeguard on duty for most of the day. You will also find three shacks on the beach outside the resort, all serving a variety of fish and other dishes at very reasonable prices. The lively village of Colva is about 1.5 miles down the beach and can be reached with pleasant 25 minute stroll.
The only downside to the resort, like a lot of other hotels in South Goa, is that it is rather isolated. The nearest village of Betelbatim and shops are nearly a mile walk away. The taxi drivers must also be about the dearest in Goa and charge on average 20% more than those in nearby Colva. However this will not stop us visiting the resort again next year.

| said: My brother an I travelled here to see India on a short holiday before deciding whether or not to visit other parts for longer.
I found the Nanu to be a great hotel. It was basic but clean within the hotel walls and the rooms and linen were cleaned daily. They also provided a very cheap and efficient laundry service, so no need to take lots of clothes.
The food was varied but mainly Indian in style, although they did attempt english food.
The beach huts offer a real alternative and you haven't truly tatsted the best fish and chips until you have barbecued King fish and turmeric chips in a beach hut. The problem came in the evenings with the descent of the insects, this is India after all. Stay away from the brighter lights in the hotel restaurant and you'll be fine, at the beach be sure to spray any exposed areas with repellent or the sand flies will eat you alive..
The pool and bar area were the main areas for guests to congregate in the evening and the entertainment was limited but well presented.
As far as location was concerned I thought it was ideal. 100 yards from the beach, a short drive to Margao or a walk along the beach to Colva and you had as much of Inidia as you could handle on a first visit. The excursions to Hampi, Dhudsagar and the infamous wednesday market at anjuna where a massive eye opener to India and I would thouroughly recommend them.
Nanu is a brilliant affordable hotel with fantastice, helpful staff, at nanu you can do nothing, get to attractione easliy or go and taste what Inida has to offer using nanu as a base.
I am taking my fiance to Nanu this November(2004) that's how highly I rate it! We'll see what she thinks and post it here when we return....
