Definitely change your room if they put you in the old block as the old room smelt of damp.
Try and get a room in the newer block near the tennis courts – room was more modern but the bathroom still smelt damp.
The hotel staff especially the laundry staff and chamber men were very noisy and started early in the morning – they were constantly trying to get into your room. Use your labels if you don’t want to be disturbed.
We kept on having to ask for toilet paper which wasn’t great as we both had food poisoning but housekeeping came quickly to deliver it.
We were not able to rest as some of the guests were very noisy especially late at night – should complain about this.
The bus is 10 minutes walk from the hotel and much cheaper at 7 rupees (compared to 400 rupees to Maria Hall), although be prepared to be squashed on occasions.
Bike hire from the hotel was expensive. It’s cheaper to hire outside.

Don’t sign up to any of the entertainment within the hotel - it is a rip off.

The hotel had a good range of food for breakfast and the staff were very nice – the omelettes were nice and prepared in front of you (the waffles might take longer if you get the wrong chef!!)
The grounds and garden areas were very nice indeed, as was the beach area.

The hotel provide you with a bottle of water (we thought we were going to be charged for this but we weren’t). There are shacks sell the water at a cheaper price.
The hotel management were not helpful when my parents thought they had booked a room. However, due to their agent misinforming them, no room was booked. The hotel management didn’t even want my elderly parents to go into our room to freshen up after a very long flight they had been on.

Third visit to this hotel for Xmas/New Year.

When we landed at Dabolim we got through the arrivals in record time, went straight to the booth at the airport for a taxi and found it was exactly the same price as last year 550 rupees.

We were greeted on our arrival at the hotel by our friend Suzanna and quickly shown to our room which was situated in the block by the tennis courts. I realised when I went in the room that it was not on the side of the building that I wanted but another word with Suzanna and we were relocated the following day to the 'sunny side'. We were lucky enough to be put in a room which was the only one in the block which had been upgraded and was brand new with wooden flooring, bathroom with shower cubicle and bath, plenty of storage space, tea/coffee making facilities, mini bar and plasma tv on the wall it was extremely nice and very comfortable.

Being AI we didn't eat out apart from a couple of snacks during the day at the beach shacks which were all still run by the same people.

I have nothing but praise for the staff at this hotel every one of them remembered us from our previous visits and went out of their way to look after us.

The food/drink are still excellent and we were invited to a dinner in the Indian Restaurant to meet the management as repeat guests which I thought was very good customer relations.

The hotel is in a lovely setting with a wonderful beach and the sunbeds are scattered throughout the grounds and the only place where you may have difficulty getting one is by the large pool.

The gala dinners held on Xmas and New Year Eve were memorable occasions, the food as always was superb and there was so much choice although some people did complain about the music as the star act was a Beyonce lookalike but we personally thought she was very good. The firework display on New Year's Eve was magnificent and it was nice to see all the catering staff mingling with the management and guests at midnight.

I must admit that having read previous reports on here about rat infestations I was a little wary this time and even more upset when my O/H went back to the room one night and said he'd just seen one go under the wardrobe!! but all was well it turned out to be a very large frog which somehow had got into the room and he quickly 'hopped it' when we got the staff to do a thorough search. I had to laugh when the following day I asked the taxi driver who was taking us to the leather shop what his name was and he said Roland!!

The only adverse comment I would make is that the hotel is a little remote so if you want to do some shopping you are stuck with the expensive taxis who are just outside the hotel grounds, in fact we got in one and he transferred us to another because we were only going down the road.

Also must comment on the Thomsons Rep who looks after this hotel. We had no communication from Thomsons throughout our holiday, we were not invited to the welcome meeting were not given any information and had to get our departure cards from the Thomas Cook Rep. She was also of no help to our friends who had been on our flight and whose luggage had been left in Manchester. It finally turned up over a week into their holiday having gone (so they were told) to Russia!!

All in all another very good holiday at the Ramada and yes I have already booked for this Xmas.

Its me again, well I visited the hotel again this month and I will give credit due where its due, there were no rats however, I believe this was because there were staff constantly spraying rat poison every morning around the same annexxes around 7am. This shouldnt need to be the case, yes every large hotel must have to deal with rats from time to time but to take such big preventative measures is worrying.

The staff service hasn't improved much although with the shacks now operational I avoided the hotel as much as possible. Only ate there once on the last night.

Stayed in this hotel for five nights in november 2007.
One word of advice, do not stop in the annexxe towards the far side of the hotel next to the golf course, it is infested with rats.
I can forgive you for not beleiving me but rats entered a member of my party's room chewed through her belongings left "mess" on her pillows, floor, bathroom... chewed sugar sachet's- may i add they stopped using those perticular sachets about 12 months ago(I am a regular visitor to this hotel-not through choice) Staff service has gone down hill since I last stayed here they do not grasp basic phrases and questions. I have a long list of things that went wrong and not once was "sorry" said once I had to prompt them on many occasion to say it.

My advice please take a look at either the Cidade to Goa or the Intercontinental- a bit pricey and further away but worth it.

Our 2nd visit to the Ramada and 5th time in Goa.

On arrival at Dabolim I got a taxi from the booth located just outside arrivals 550rs which I didn't think was too bad a price.

When we got to the hotel we were greeted like old friends as they remembered us from the previous year, we even got a lovely chocolate cake with 'welcome back' written on it.

The evening of our arrival was the Xmas Eve Gala Dinner so we just dumped our cases had a quick shower and change and were shown to our pre booked table. Had to give in and go to bed around midnight but a lovely start to the holiday. I notice that the bars now stock Kingfisher which is a marked improvement on the previous year's Fosters.

This holiday for us was a pure R & R, in our AI package we had a full body massage, pedicure, manicure and many more things which we had not taken full advantage of last year.

The food and service were superb and we thoroughly enjoyed a restful 2 weeks.

The only negative things were the prices charged by the taxis just outside the hotel and the plane which was freezing!!

Would I return, yes of course, I've already booked for next Xmas.

I would never visit this disgraceful hotel again, it was truly sickening.

The hotel cleanliness was a disgrace there was rubbish everywhere I went and there was litter on the beach as well. There was a terrible smell at all times of my stay.

The hotel food was not even fit for a dog, it had mosquitoes and flies all over the food and they expect us to eat that, utterly disgraceful.

The location was appalling as it was so far away from the airport and so far away from the main in town shopping centre, they also charged alot of money to chauffer us around.

The hotel staff were really moody and rude at all times I even found some of my items missing from my hotel room, not making any assumptions.

There was no entertainment. All I heard was a group of cows trying to sing, I don't know why the hotel paid them for.

If you want to go on a quality holiday try Florida In America Pure Class.

A week before our holiday (booked last January) the tour operator informed me that our original hotel in the North was overbooked and they were moving us to the South. I wasn't pleased having always stayed in the Calangute area of the North and knowing that the South was extremely quiet.

My taxi booked to take us to Baga had to be cancelled along with other arrangements I had made. After our flight from Birmingham in the early hours of Boxing Day we discovered that several people on the coach had also had their holiday changed and was expecting the worst. How wrong can you be, they did us a favour.

The hotel must be rated as one of the best we'd ever stayed in. Our room was ideal looking over the golf course and the sea beyond and the sun shone on the balcony all day.

The staff were amazing and could not do enough for you.

The food was superb and the New Year's Eve Gala was like something out of a fairy tale. I was glad that we were AI because it was quite expensive to eat and drink if you were on a B & B basis.

No rush to reserve a sunbed here, there were loads of them scattered throughout the extensive grounds and by the beach.

We found ourselves eating our evening meal in the restaurant by the beach every evening and they even reserved a table for us.

We found that things are a little bit more expensive in the South but visiting the North for a dental appointment one day we decided that our future holidays to Goa would be spent in the South, hopefully at the Ramada.

The only word to decribe this hotel is horrible. After insisting we had four star or above at the travel agents we where looking forword to our holiday.

After a 24hrs delay at Bombay airport(thats another story altogher) we arrived at our hotel, first impressions where good but they didnt last.

The room smelt fusty, the bed throw had red stains on it and when we peeled the covers back the sheets where stained too, the bathroom was in need of a re-furb the sink was nearly off the wall in fact the whole room was in need of that d.i.y disater program and the balconey had a lovely feature of a pot with special goan weeds in and mucky tables and chairs!

We complained and was show a bugalow this was livable but still only a low three star. PLEASE DONT GO!!!

For us it has been the second time within two months that we went to Ramada Caravela Beach Resort.

I have selected the hotel from the Thomas Cook catalogue because the meal there has been judged to be very positive. We found this confirmed and were surpassed in our expectations.

The quality of the different sideboards have been in best comparison with the sideboards of the leading hotels in Bombay and New Delhi . You can choice marvellous fishes in the beach restaurant and get them back in delicious preparation . All this and local drinks are included in the All Inclusive package. One lobster dinner also is included.

The rooms are well equipped and clean and a kind staff guarantees this status.

Only few german speaking guests you will find in the resort, some english speaking people are among the guests. Because I understand and I speak russian language for me it has not been a problem to get in contact with the majority of the guests - russian people from all over the gus states. sophia as russian guest relation representative did a great job for these guests as well as Karen for the english speaking community. ( nobody from the hotel staff speaks german, for us no serious problem ). Indian people understand and speak English. One feels like at home. Indian people in the resort is very communicative. Maybe therefore they dont like too much the russian people, because they cant find an open door for communication.

Upon arrival at the huge entrance to the reception, you are met with a certain warmth and slowness of pace. After working for 11 months at a frantic pace - which is the normal way of life nowadays - it was pleasant to be reminded of how to relax and enjoy life again.

The choice of food within the many eating places within the resort was astounding, and as we were there for 3 weeks, very rewarding. Should there have been a day that I required something different, then just a quite word with the chef, and hey presto, it was delivered. Of course, sometimes, if the raw ingredients are not available then you will not get what you want.

Hotel cleanliness for this part of the world was excellent, from dawn to dusk and beyond, there was always someone cleaning.

The location of the Hotel set back from the beach was a big positive, as a stroll through the gardens and the 9 hole golf course was just what you needed to fill your dream holiday.

Apart from the usual evening entertainment, once a week, the hotel would put on a theme party evening, with barbeque on the beach and first class entertainment.

All in all, so long as you are not a millionaire expecting that sort of service, then this resort is a must.

I am looking forward to this years 4 weeks there.

We set off to Goa on Saturday from Manchester. As this was the first time we had been to Asia we were a little worried about what we would find there.

I will just say about the airport, that apart from the actual airport and getting the bags from the very disorganised conveyor belt, we emerged into the sun, to find we where surrounded by an army of men in brown “uniforms” taking our bags and running off to a our coaches, with us having very little idea of what was going on, except our bags disappearing into the distance towards the coaches. When we finally caught up with our bags and the coach to the hotel, the men in brown, are there – saying "one English pound please, your bags very heavy".

When we arrived at the hotel, after travelling for the best part of an hour and half on either suicidal duel carriageways or dusty roads with lots of horns being beeped, passed large gates and into a driveway up to the hotel, surrounded by green grass and other types of fauna.

After spending the best part of 13 hours travelling, we stepped from the coach to be met by a guard in a white peaked cap, to help us from the coach, a lady to give us a traditional Indian greeting at the entrance of the hotel and into a vast reception / lobby area where check-in was very easy and a porter took our bags away to our nominated room.

The hotel, did offer us an upgrade to a superior room at check-in for ten dollars a day, but we decided not to take up this offer.

In the lobby, we met Karen who is an employee of the hotel. Karen is English and lives now in Goa and acts as the liaison between the senior management of the hotel and English-speaking guests. Karen provided us with very good tips and advice, from anything from, where to go, where to eat outside of the hotel, what excursions are good and was always very friendly and helpful. After travelling a long way, not knowing what to expect, Karen was a very welcome surprise but very indicative of the type of service that the hotel gave to customers.

A word about the hotels’ guests, at the time of our arrival (Nov – Dec 04), the majority of the guests were English origin, but a large remainder of guests were Russians, which was interesting and whilst they kept themselves to themselves, they did not mix and most staff did not welcome their presence.

The corridor to our room was clean and cool, down the stairs past another large plantation and into the corridor to our room. The room was clean, spacious and very pleasant. Our room had a large bed, tiled floor with a large TV in a cupboard with two sofas’. The room had a large bathroom with a good-sized bath, sink and WC. The whole room and especially the bathroom, was very clean and smelled clean, with no signs of inspects that one might expect to see in India.

At the rear of our standard room, was a door on to our individual veranda, where ours not being a superior room, looked out into the gardens.

The temperature was about 30-32 degrees C, with the sea about 29 degrees and the pool, the coolest at 25 degrees, although it did feel colder when you got to the “ooh” bit when you got into the pool.

Karen gave all new guests a tour around the hotel and the grounds, which is over 20 acres in total. In the main, the hotel rooms are off the main reception and indoor dining areas and in spurs in the grounds. Surrounded by most of the rooms or Villas’ (which did look very nice), was a large free form pool, which was clean and well maintained and had a swim up bar. Recliners, which were free, surrounded the pool and the majority were in good order. It should be pointed out that during our stay of 2 weeks, at least twice, staff carried out maintenance on the recliners. All guests could also borrow hotel towels for no charge and could take them from 7am in the morning to be returned no later than 7pm, whether we were in the hotel or on excursions.

The rest of the grounds included the lower gardens, which was a large grassed area with a number of coconut plantations, running to the side was a tiled path through the hotel gardens, a good 9 hole golf course and then the beach.

The gardens, were well maintained and we saw many gardeners tending the gardens and the waters used to kept them green, seemed to be clear and not dirty or indeed smelly. The walk down the path from the pool to the beach was about 2 minutes and not an unpleasant walk.

The hotel offered many activities and had a team to organize activities if you should require. Tennis, table tennis, massages, gym, Internet, disco was all available to all guests.

The food offered by the hotel was varied and of a good quality. We went on a B&B basis and the breakfast was held in the dining area on a self-service buffet basis, with plenty of staff available to help you, keep your tables clear and the buffet permanently replenished. The food was European style and the omelette the chefs’ make in front of you are to die for!

The food during the day was again either a buffet basis if you were an all-inclusive guest or from a variety of places from a lunch or a-la Carte menu. In the evening, again a buffet was available for inclusive or non-inclusive guests and this could be taken either in the dining area or outside by the pool. Two other restaurants were available and these were a specialist Indian/Goon cuisine or by the top of the gardens, adjacent to the beach a Chinese and fish restaurant.

The restaurants where we ate most nights and the food was to an excellent standard and the spring rolls and noodles again are a must. At the entrance of this restaurant was today’s’ catch laid out, with anything from Indian salmon and Red Snapper to King Prawns and Lobster available. The staff would then cook to your directions usually a lemon or garlic butter – again the food was excellent.

A moment about the staff, every individual we came across could not do enough for you. Everyone would give you as little or as much space as you required and all were informative and very talkative with excellent English.

A previous comment on this website has been that the staff wore different clothes, this is correct, but by talking to the staff you find that the hotel is part of a training scheme for large colleges / universities for cities in India and students wear different colour shirts than the permanent staff, the work experience staff from local schools wore another type of clothing and the managers wear another colour of shirt and all in all, all staff give a friendly but professional air.

Many staff hailed from different places in India, such as Bombay, Dehli etc and come to Goa to work in the tourist industry. The waiters/waitresses we spoke to, all felt that tourism was a good industry and most wanted to pursue into a career in Goa or onto the cruise ships in the Med or Caribbean. It is worth mentioning that we spoke to people that were at other large hotels in the area such as the Taj Exotica and Leela Palace and the staff are not allowed to speak to guests with the exception of supervisors and line managers.

The hotel also had a water sport area, where you could partake in activities as diverse as guided dolphin trips to parasailing for a very reasonable price.

Turning to prices, the whole of India is very “cheap” compared to UK prices, and inside the hotel, the bottled water is 40 rupees (about 50 pence), a bottle of Fosters 65cl (brewed in Goa) is 110 rupees (£1.15), coca cola 20 rupees (25 pence) etc. In fact in the hotel, where we ate 3 course meals most nights, a light lunch during the day, plus drinks, dolphin trip for 2, Indian head and body massages, phone charges, internet charges and parasailing came to just less than £500 for two weeks for two people.

One comment about the tour operator, Thomas Cook. We thought the rep (Sydney) was excellent and again was very helpful, but in terms of costs of the excursions that was paid in UK currency, they were expensive. We learnt that the hotel, like other hotels in the area operate tourist taxis, which the hotel will order on your behalf and will pick you up and drop you off at the hotel lobby. The taxis’ operate on a set fee basis and will take you anywhere in Goa, will stay with you for however long you want and then return you back and it is only at this point that they will require paying.

All taxi drivers we came across, were helpful, friendly, spoke excellent English and really wanted to ensure you enjoyed your excursion and their prices were a third of the tour company costs, and to boot, by using the taxi drivers, you are putting money into the local economy.

All in all, the hotel was excellent and I would wholeheartedly recommend anybody who is thinking of going to Goa to stay at the Ramada Carvella Hotel and we are certainly going back – maybe for 3 weeks next time.

The Ramada Caravela, Goa, 5 star deluxe? Please, don't make me laugh! I would not rate this hotel much higher than a 2 star.

When booking our holiday we made it clear we wanted to stay in the best hotels, therefore when booking the Ramada Caravela we opted to upgrade to a superior room. Upon arrival to the hotel we got taken to our "superior" room which seemed to be at least 10 minutes walk away from the main reception. The door opened and I could not believe my eyes when I saw the "superior" room, it was disgraceful.

The decor was dull and dingy with awful mustard tiles on the floor but that was not the worst of it. There was an awful smell of damp that was claimed by management to be just a "not lived in" smell. Now, bearing in mind that November is one of Goa's busiest times of the year you would have expected someone to have stayed in the room within the previous 2 weeks would you not. I felt physically sick that I had spent all this money on what was meant to be a holiday of a lifetime and ended up in what could only be called a hell hole!

After sitting in the lobby for nearly 3 hours trying to get moved into another hotel we were told by a Kuoni rep that this would not be possible as all the hotels in South Goa were full. We got shown another room by the manager at the Ramada Caravela but were not told the status of this room as we had previously thought we had booked a superior room. The room was slightly better decorated but it still had the same "not lived in" smell, also known as damp due to the building being an old church. We got showered and made our way down to the Indian restaurant, where I could not stomach a thing after being so distraught and was actually sick.

The following morning, after a restless night, we went to sample the breakfast menu. It was buffet style complete with not only your regular food but flies, pigeons, crows and dogs with fleas accompanying you while you ate. Needless to say this was not a 5 star deluxe air conditioned restaurant but rather an open air room, free for all gods creatures to get in on the helpings of food!

The location of the hotel was stated in the brochure to be on the beach. You could not see the beach or sea anywhere from the hotel, you had to walk through a lengthy garden being watered by water that smelt as if it had come out of the sewers. By the time you did eventually reach the beach you got hounded by local women to buy items that looked like they had been stolen from their local shops.

The hotel staff did not argue or even raise an eye brow when I clearly said that this was not a 5 star hotel.

There was not a set uniform across all the staff and some had the most revolting flowery shirts on.

The entertainment provided in the evenings was unprofessional. I did not go to see any of the performances however after listening to the noise that was very wise decision as most of the singers sounded like they had got stomach ache!

I would definitely never visit this hotel again, would not recommend it to anybody and been totally put off Goa by this experience. To all those considering Goa, forget it, you could find those beaches in many other tropical countries.

If you want a true taste of India go to the North, especially Jaipur, it is spectacular!
