The staff are soooo friendly & welcoming.
Entertainment was a laugh but not for the reasons it should be...although the ballet company that came 1 night were superb!

| said: We stayed on the villa side of the resort, even though we had originally booked the hotel we were moved due to the hotel side being closed for renovations.
The Brisas is in a wonderful location right on the beach.
The rooms were cleaned every day, with the maid making different creations with the towels i.e swans & butterflies etc.
The food was very good as they cater for as many nationalities as possible.
The staff were very friendly nothing was to much trouble I had a slight tummy upset one day and the waitress got me a couple of bottles of tonic water which had me feeling fine in no time.
Entertainment was a bit hit and miss some nights you had games and other nights just Cuban music which some of the tunes tended to sound the same. Having said that I would definitely visit this resort again.

| said: We stayed in the Brisas Guardalavaca, Holguin, Cuba, primarily for a family wedding which was beautiful, top marks to the hotel for the preparation. It was a very memorable day. We were due to stay in the hotel but got a free upgrade to a villa because the main hotel was being renovated.
The resort was very clean, the staff were meticulous.
The food was the only downfall, not to our liking, not what we were expecting being in the Caribbean To be honest, a bit bland. We were all looking for some hot spicy food, but I now know that Cubans do not eat the same kind of food as the rest of the Caribbean. We were looking forward to it being hot and spicy. There were no signs of ingredients we were expecting, Cassava, Yams, Allspice, Scotch Bonnets etc.
The daily cleaning staff were very good, my partner and I would try to guess which animal we would find on our bed made from the towels some looked a bit suspect! Some of the cleaners had very good singing voices too.
Location, Perfect, Idyllic, dreamy what more can I say? On the whole the staff were great and very friendly. There were a couple of incidences from a few of them not being professional but we sorted that out.
During the evening meals we would be entertained by the musicians and then they would have nightly themed entertainment which I was told was very good.
Would we come back? Yes

| said: I spent New Year 2006 at Brisas Guardalavaca with my wife and teenage daughters. A wonderful time was had by all. If you are not spoiled, the food is excellent. If you are spoiled, don't leave home. We loved the unlimited fresh tropical fruit and the Cuban national dishes. The attempts to cater to European or North American cuisine are heroic, but pathetic, and are better avoided.
The villas area is fantastic, and the closer you are to the beach, the better.
The pools are excellent, and even if one pool is closed for renovations, no problem. Most people prefer the beach, which is perfect for sun-bathing, and beach sports, and has pristine clean water, excellent for swimming, canoeing, sailing, pedal-boating, etc.
The "animacion" team is excellent, and the sooner you plug into their daily activities, the more fun you will have. The evening entertainment runs from corny to barrels of fun to world-class. But the "animacion" team are knowledgeable, friendly, energetic, and available all day every day, and clearly demonstrate that your enjoyment is their greatest source of satisfaction. I salute them all. My daughters are still referring to them by name, and our entire family would return to Brisas Guardalavaca and will return there as soon as possible, for a hassle-free fun family mid-winter vacation.
When we were there, we saw many couples, newlyweds, and older couples, and families with kids, and everyone seemed happy, and we made some new acquaintances.
I would recommend that you speak with the tour organizer in advance to get commitments from them about their efforts to avoid a nightmare at the Holgun airport. Their usual excuses about "government bureaucracy" and "the Communist system" just aren't acceptable. The tour organizers have enough clout to demand and ensure a reasonable airport experience for their customers, and they should use that clout. For some people, the airport hassles will be a deal-breaker, despite the excellent experience at Brisas Guardalavaca.

| said: My boyfriend & myself went to Brisas for my sister Michelle's wedding. There was 27 of us in total. We had a fantastic time. This was my first holiday abroad & first time on a plane! We flew with Monarch Airlines & the flight was good & the food was ok despite what people say about it.
When we arrived at Holguin it was absolutely boiling around 30degrees. And the drive to the hotel is quite a sad one as these people have nothing & they live completely basic so you thank your lucky stars for what you have.
We had a wee band playing when we arrived at the hotel & everyone spoke good english but it's always good to know a few words in spanish.
Checking in went fine & the room was lovely & clean. The shower was a pain in the neck as it go's hot then cold but never just nice!
The room maids were amazing! The towel sculptures were gorgeous & the maids were so helpful & couldn't do enough for you. I left her some clothes & tolietries I no longer needed.
Now for the food. I'm not going to moan like other people have because Cubans starve to feed the hotels so we should be grateful! The food was fine & I found something I liked everytime. My stomach didn't agree to much with the food but I just cut out the things I thought it might be & it didn't ruin my holiday. The grill bar is the best place to eat. The buffet at the hotel is good but the restaurants are brilliant! Seafood was amazing (El Patio) & the italian was great.
We had the wedding meal in the italian & they let us do our speeches & cake cutting even tho there was other guests there. There's more variation at the hotel buffet than the villa buffet. I liked breakfast the best. I had toasted fresh bread every morning which was yummy!
The hotel's location was good as it was right next to the beach & there was a small market a short walk away.
The staff at the Brisas are fantastic! Lovely people who always stop for a chat & work there bottoms off! We had some good nights with the entertainment as well but it was cancelled a lot due to rain. It mostly rained at night though.
We went on trips to the dolphins which was wonderful. Such timid creatures! We also went on speedboats which Stephen enjoyed imensely while I was getting chucked about next to him as the ocean was quite choppy! Salsa nights were my favourite! Monday nights they hold salsa nights on a nearby beach with an open bar & we had the best time ever!
The boys also went deep sea fishing which was not good apparently (proberly because they were all throwing up over the side of the boat lol).
The beach was stunning & there was plenty of sun loungers for everyone! The pedalows were great apart from when I decided to take a wee dip off the side of it & couldn't get back on & Stephen couldn't help me for laughing.
We didn't go to Havana as it was cancelled due to Hurricane Wendy(?) but the plane home was not affected.
The airport on the way home was a nightmare as we had to sit for 2hrs with no air conditioning & people smoking so as you can imagine it was disgusting. All in all it was a good holiday & I'll go back one day but first I'm going go somewhere simple like Lanzarote!
If your going to Brisas soon enjoy yourself!

| said: Well what can I say - an absolutely amazing holiday all round. - apart fromt the flight. I work for airlines and I can honestly say, Excel is the worst I have every come across, the plane was awful, cramped, smelly, old, - the crew were awful, rude, unknowledgable, uninformative and seemed to be undertrained, the food was awful, small, cold, un edable!! - anyway that was just the flight!
The hotel, was brilliant. - please remember Cuba is a very poor country, firstly expect you are getting the same standard or accomodation as Greece or somewhere like that. The hotel is rated 3 - 4 * and this is fine, the rooms are spacious, with all you need, you can fill bottles of water up daily for your fridge and you are given a flask to be filled with coffee , juice, vodka or beer!! - the rooms are airconidtioned which stays on all day, the bathrooms are spcious and kept very clean.
The chambermaids work very hard and keep the rooms nice for you. The hotel rooms are all the same standard - with the difference being sea or garden view, we had garden view with terrace on to the garden which was nice, friends of ours had sea views which were better. The Villa sections - the rooms are bigger but as you are not in them much you don't really need that extra space if its just 2 of you.
The staff in the hotel will bend over backwards to make sure you are happier I have never met friendlier more helpful people. Some of the waiting staff seemed to be little pissed off with there jobs - but who woulnd't be working in that heat in stuffy restuarants. - speaking of resturants, the food at the hotel isn't the best but there is always somethng on offer as it is buffet style, so you will alwasy find something you like, it is nice to see the chefs coming out and testing the food with thermometres and things regularly too.
The 24 hour snack bar serves burgers, chip pizza and sandwiches all day! sometimes they get a little confused with the food - ie putting mash potatoe on pizza??? and calling stewing beef - fillet steak - but its all ok! The Al la Carte resturants are lovely, espcially the sea food one, they have other things on offer if you not a fan of fish too!
The 24 hour all inlcusive is really good, includes all activities, all drinks, local and imported, non moterised water sports and some excusions organised by the animation team
- The Animation team are the best I have come accorss - they are far from proffessional dancers / singers (the have singers and dancers to do this!) - they are entertainers and if they will make your holiday, they are around all day organising beach games and pool games, salsa lessons, cocktail lessons, Spanish lessons and anything else you want, they are there to make the guests happier and they certainly do this! - they put on shows all night for everyone to enjoy and they will even party with you till the early hours in the hotels discoteca!
The hotel has everything you want and need, on site doctors, with English speaking doctors and nursers, massage, beauty, hairdressers, gym, suana, tennis courts, 2 pools, disco, inside and outside bars everything you need!
One tip - take spare clothes with you - not for you but to leave for the people that have made your holiday, Cuba is such a poor county, especially in places like Guadalavaca. the hotel staff earn about £25 per month, this is just enough to feed the family - they can afford nothing else. The are so appreciative to anything you can spare! - my suitcase was so light coming home! - like I said before, the people that made our holiday were the animation and entertainment team, and they really like it when we thanked them for it - as not many people remember them like they do waiters and chambermaids! (and they earn less money!)
We visited the hotel in a party of 31 for a wedding, not one person needed to complain about anything, the wedding was exceptionlly planned and every last detail taken care of. nothing could of been better
It really was a fantasic holiday, I will never forget it and I will definitely return - not with excel airways

The 24 hour bar/grill was very good with pizzas, doughnuts, hotdogs and hamburgers and fries, although out of fries for 3 days!
The hotel was a bit far out for us to go anywhere, although excursions were available, disappointed with the dolphin trip, although being revamped nowhere near as good value for money as 2 years ago.
The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble for them. the entertainment was very good as they we working very long hours for very little reward. The standards seem to have dropped a little from 2003 so we will try something new next year

| said: Our group of friends travelled to Cuba for a wedding.
We stayed for one week and experienced a variety of wonderful excursions throughout our stay.
The hotel was very accomodating and ensured we were satisfied with our rooms (as the travel agent booked incorrectly) The hotel staff were very kind and very funny to be around. The entertainment was great(always around to visit after shows etc. and the beaches and scenery were fantastic.
We participated in the fantastic tour (catamaran and snorkeling) which was excellent, and also the champion tour which was a jeep tour, horseback riding and speed boats.
The champion tour was an excellent way to learn all about the history of Cuba, a great tour for early on in your trip as it will allow you a better understanding of Cuba and it's culture. The hotel did a fantastic job of setting up a beautiful wedding.
This was a wonderful experience and Brisas Guadalavaca, the hotel, it's location and staff made it that way. We plan to go back very soon!

| said: First time in Cuba for Christmas & New Year. Upgraded room as soon as we arrived because the one we were allocated smelt damp. Shown 3 rooms and opted for 3rd floor ocean view.
The food was not particularly good and the best meal for me was breakfast. It was not until late into the first week that we discovered that the buffet restaurant in the Villas was better than the one in the hotel. Plenty of meat on offer but where were the potatoes and vegetables? Also the sweets were nothing to write home about but on the plus side you could always partake of pizza (not during the evening), hot dogs, burgers, fries etc and after several drinks from the 24 hour bar who cared!!
The room maids, bar staff, waiting staff and the entertainers at this hotel are first class but watch out for the reception staff who I believe ripped us off with money exchange and the cost of phone cards.
One word of warning if you telephone home from your room make it very brief, I made a call to one of my daughters and it cost me £15 for about 2 minutes. There is not much to do in the locality, you do get to see some very old cars, there are a few shops selling the usual tourist things and there is a bank which on my only visit there was packed to the rafters.
We did experience a little of the cuban life when we were invited to one of the musicians homes and this has to be the highlight of my holiday, we were lavishly fed, watered and enjoyed listening to the family playing guitars and singing. Another downside for us was the weather. Having been in Goa at the same time of year for the past 3 years I thought it would be the same in Cuba - wrong - out of 14 days I think we had about 5 sunny days the rest were overcast and the wind was very strong.
Will we return I believe so probably at a different time of year and meet our Cuban friends who extended so much hospitality to us.

| said: The Brisas is a lovely complex and is very clean. The cleaners in the rooms were very friendly and some of the towel sculptures were amazing!
The food during the day can become a bit monotonous but, there is always a good variety so something for everyone, if not in the buffet restaurant, then in the 24 hour snack bar in the hotel.
The fish and Italian restaurants are very good and the service is fantastic - the waiting staff can't do enough for you. Book early though as you can only visit either once a week.
The location of the hotel is fine. You are directly on the sea front, you can hire bikes for free and there is a free train ride twice a week (ask at reception) which takes you to other villages etc. There are taxi's readily available should you want to go further afield.
All hotel staff were fantastic and a $1 tip means a lot. If you talk to the staff, you will find that they are very well educated and have given up their professions as they can earn more in the tourist industry with tips. Old clothes, pens and toiletries are also greatly welcomed!
That said, the water sports people were quite unhelpful. There are 2 centres, one on either end of the Brisas beach. The one at the villas was closed for a few days for no obvious reason, with the staff sat in the shade.
The entertainment at the hotel was much better than I was expecting. There will be a sheet placed in your room each week with that weeks entertainment and info about which themed nights are on in the buffet restaurants. The house band get tedious with the same set every night before the main show.

All Restaurant area seemed clean had cockroaches. Food very poor not kept at correct temp i.e salads and hot cooked food. Very poor ala carte restaurant recycled food from buffet & restaurant. Italian restaurant is of a very low standard. Lack of knowledge of cooking and basic food hygiene. We could not eat for two week due to food poisoning, so please make sure you check what you eat i.e fresh hot 63-75c or cold 3-5C
Bar staff drinks and service very good
Second to none location

Buffet in the evening was a bit hit or miss, but food in the 2 a la carte restaurants were quite good. Only main restaurant in hotel block was air conditioned & at this time of year Cuba is quite warm 7 very humid.
Location was a bit more out of the way than we realised.
Most of the staff were very friendly, helpful & made you feel very welcome. Reception / handyman were less so it took 3 visits & 4 calls to get them to fix wardrobe doors that were hanging off when we arrived, if I had my toolbox I could have done the job myself in 10 minutes.
Our Holiday place rep was non-existent, she was off ill for most of the 1 st week, only managed to speak to her just before transferring to Havana.
Entertainment was second rate & a bit hap hazard, but did a few sight seeing trips & these were quite good.
Overall good 3 star accommodation, need to work on the food & entertainment, most of the staff really helpful & pleasant, but need to sort out reception & the handyman.

| said: I went to Cuba with my sister and 2 friends in July.
The hotel was lovely. We arrived very late at night/ first thing in the morning but the staff were very helpful and got us booked in quickly. We had some issues with rooms to start off with (we were put in villas and our 2 friend were right over the other side of the complex), but this was sorted out by our rep by midday on our first day there.
The rooms were fairly basic, but lovely and clean with plenty of wardrobes etc. Bathroom was large with all mod cons. We had a lovely view from our villa of the sea.
The hotel was absolutely spotless, and the rooms were cleaned every day without fail. The maids were lovely and friendly, as were all the staff.
On our first day we went to the hotel buffet restaurant, a gentleman told us the food was awful, but we found out that this was incorrect. The food was absolutely fine, I guess it’s a matter of taste, but there was a huge selection. Chip, sausages, pizza and burgers etc for the less adventurous, and plenty of fresh salad etc occasionally they spit roasted a pig out side the hotel and served it (make sure you get there early on those evenings as it goes quick)! The food was lovely and always plenty of it.
The evening entertainment was impressive, with all staff getting involved. The hotel band play every evening before the main entertainment and they were excellent, we were soon able to sing along to some of the songs.
All in all this was a perfect holiday, I have raved about it ever since I returned and recommended it to everyone, and I would go back every year if it was possible.

| said: We stayed at the Brisas villas as part of a twin centre holiday - first 3 days in santiago de cuba - great! - then travelled to the Brisas for the remaining 10 days. We had the villa rooms which I would advise as they are better than in the hotel.
The rooms we had were quite large, but basic, hit and miss with sky tv and shower (best to have shower before 6pm as no hot water or power after then, ok if you like cold showers!). The maid was good and always left a towel sculpture on the beds to the amusement of the children! The staff were always cleaning - cannot fault them.
There was a beach restaurant which we ate at nearly every lunchtime. The food was fresh when ordered, but limited in choice - nice view. It was a seafood restaurant at night, voucher from reception was needed for evening you can only eat here once a week.
Villa buffet restaurant. You could eat here at lunch and evening, but beware of the flies and the heat.
Hotel Italian restaurant. You have to get voucher from reception to eat here once a week, but nothing special (food was cold had to send back)
Main hotel buffet. Same as villas.
All food is imported in for the hotels and no chance of getting a flavour of cuba unless you went out - which like all islands is limited as you are mainly hotel based. The main buffet restaurant in the villa complex is o.k., theres a pasta man, a grill man and self serve food but if you are picky this is not the hotel for you.
In the main hotel pool bar you can get snacks like burgers, hot dogs, chips, pizzas, donuts, popcorn up to 11pm.
At the villas there was a games room with snooker table, table tennis and board games and 2 pools which were o.k. warning weather was very hot - 45 degrees every day - take lots of factor 30+ and t-shirts as the kids will burn, its very strong, there are no parasols and nowhere to shade in this complex be warned. My youngest was 7 and she spent 8 hours a day in the pool as it was the only cool place, with t-shirt and hat on, factor 60 slapped all over and still came back with a tan!.
Advise you to take more suncream than usual. Better to put a 20+ on two or three times a day and tan than be silly and use below because you will end up looking like a lobster, being sore and peel! Kids need 60 block. Saw some nasty burning going on. The weather can be deceiving as theres a bit of breeze from the beach.
Would not take kids under 6 as it is too hot and uncomfortable in the summer months.
Hotel staff only get 20 dollars a month so you find if you tip them a dollar for good service they remember you! We left most of the tipping till the end of the holiday and left toiletries and a few clothes which were appreciated.
Entertainment - what entertainment?
All in all I would like to come back to Cuba again but stay in a 5 star hotel as the ratings in cuba are not like home we all expected a bit more luxury than what we got here - the Brisas is more like a 3*star - ok but not the 4*star we booked.

That said the hotel was spotless and the staff with the exception of the nautical team were first rate. The hotel food is repetative but you can always find something you like. The specially fish and Italian restaurants are at best average. Enetratinment is OK but nothing special apart from the water ballet. Although the hotel is four star I think it only deserves a three star rating.

Bathroom flooded through ceiling light 3 times before they deigned to move me. The cockroaches in the room were some of the biggest I have seen in the Caribbean. Rooms on a higher level are better and those in the villas are best. The entertainment is repeated every week so can be boring if you stay for two. Food is edible but very much the same each day. Didn't see any food shops while we were there! Entertainment and restaurant staff are friendly but all tout for tips. The Hotel is overrated, shouldn't be more than a 3*. Diving is 'ScubaCuba' and not PADI so wasn't convinced it was safe. Catamaranning was exceptionally good.

basic, but very clean, although the rooms near to the pool area could be noisy. The staff were mostly friendly and helpful. Not much for people who want entertainment, but a relaxing holiday for families with

this is in Cuba - not the luxury end of the caribbean!
Plenty of food available but the same choice most days.

Staff were friendly and polite and very helpful.
Food was nothing special but you could always find something you liked.
The grounds of the hotel were absolutely fantastic - you couldn't ask for a more beautiful location.
Wonderful place - would love to go again!

| said: I found the Villa section of the hotel quite nice.
The rooms were spacious and clean, with a good view of the beach.
The outer decor of the resort was beautiful, with many secluded quiet relaxing areas.
The food was repetitive and bland, but the all inclusive beverages made up for any inadequacies in the food.
I found the hotel staff to be prompt, friendly, humourous and helpful.
The entertainment was OK, and I would be Ok if I never heard Guan tan a meya ever again.
We went on a wedding party and the service was beautiful, and the staff payed attention to every detail, and were quite organized.
Overall, I enjoyed it and the quiet setting and found the closeness of other resorts convenient for social interaction.
