My wife and I have stayed at the Esmeralda twice now,and have had a great time on both occassions. The first time was with Thomson, and it was only afterwards we discovered we had been totally ripped off by them! Now we book indepenantly and book flights with ryanair and couldn't get a better deal.

The hotel is just great, it is such a vast inprovement on other bland concrete slab apartments nearby, it has a really traditional Spanish feel and just looks lovely. The staff are now good friends, susanna and her lovely, constant, smile will always have a place in our hearts!

The pool is not the biggest but is big enough and is spotlessly clean, as is the rest of the hotel. The menu in the bar and restaurant is a little restricted, but is superbly cooked, and there are a host of other various places to eat in the immediate area anyway.

I just love visiting here, Salou and Port Cambrils and just a walk away, but the walk to Port Cambrils may be a little too much for some. The buses are regular anyway and only cost just over a euro for the short journey. The beach is not even 30 seconds away and is well kept.

Just love it and can't wait to return. Alan, Bernie, Sue, and all the rest, hope to see you soon!

We booked a last minute deal to The Hotel Esmeralda. A hotel with lots of character - although the room was a bit small or the furniture might have been to big! it was lovely and clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool was small and as it was school holiday time very busy, but the fabulous beach was literally across the road - The hotel is located centraly for both Salou and Cambrills, we walked to both, but you could hire bikes and ride on dedicated bike paths. Entertainment in the hotel on the whole was good.

Okay, so we were not told when booking with the travel company about the deposits for the room key or the safety deposit box, so that came as a shock to start off the holiday. Blame My Travel not the messenger...( Just a little tip about the trips with the tour company ASK AT RECEPTION FIRST FOR THEIR INVALUABLE ADVISE )

As for the hotel and the staff we could not have wished for more. The rooms were cleaned on a regular basis and our sheets were changed several times in the two weeks. Yes if you want clean towels daily you needed to go and exchange them yourselves and yes you had to put your rubbish out in the street collection bins BUT that looks to be standard practice in the resort.

The location of the hotel was very good, the beach was less than 5 minutes away and although the trains run along the back of the hotel, I can assure you having gone and used the trains they run a lot closer to many of the other accomodations locally. We had a back room over looking the mountains and had some wonderful views in the morning and at night with the sunsets.

These guys went all out to help when asked for advise and we will certainly be going back.

I travelled with 4 friends and stayed in a 2 bed apartment. The rooms were clean, the bedding was fresh and clean. Although the decor was a bit old it didnt detract from the comfort of the apartment. Whatever extras we asked for ie pillows, towels etc they dealt with straight away. The staff were very friendly, always smiling and ready to help suggest good places to eat and bars/clubs to visit. Had a great view of pool and could hear the sae at night time, very relaxing! Will certainly visit again!!

Hotel cleanliness - whats this?
The apartments were disgusting and filthy sheets were only changed twice the whole time we were there unless we were willing to get up at 10am in the morning to change our own sheets.

Me and my friend were bitten many times and I even ended up in hospital as a result.
I blame the complete lack of cleanliness of the apartments for this. When the cleaners did come they were around for two mins maximum. I could have done this myself if there had been a mop and brush in the room.

Hotel staff - complete joke. Most were unfriendly unhelpful and rude.

Entertainment - who the heck is Rob Orbison? And why does he wear so many tropical shirts? Don't even bother.

Overall - don't go, seriously, it's nasty.

I know you get what you pay for, however I expect somewhere to be clean at the very least.

My friends and I stayed at the Esmeralda apartments for a long weekend.

We had a 2 bed apartment which was very clean and spacious. Yes, it was old fashioned and basic but for what we paid we found it to be excellent value for money. We collected clean towels daily from the laundry.

The hotel staff were the most friendly and helpful we have ever met. Nothing was too much trouble and requests were dealt with immediately.

The location was fantastic, over the road from the beach and near to local bars and restaurants.

The food was basic but very good, the breakfasts and bar service/waitress service were excellent.

Entertainment is family orientated and cheesy but certainly fun.
We will certainly visit again.

I don't mind basic accommodation, but I do expect a certain standard of hygiene. This place was dirty and smelly, the towels looked like old floor cloths, the bedding was not much better. The kitchen smelt like something had died in it and the toilets smelt of sewage. I did complain to reception and nothing was done.

The pool is like a foot wash which fits no more than about 10 sun beds round it and is right on the main road. There is an additional charge for everything.

My son and I did not last 12 hours in this apartment the icing on the cake was the drunk with the fire extinguisher who went on the rampage and trashed the 4th floor. The staff then came up with a story about how he sleep walks and thought the apartments were on fire. If I had not been moved I would have rather paid to come home on the next available flight, you could not pay me to go back to the Esmeralda apartments.

Arrived on the Sunday morning to be told by reception that we were lucky as our room was ready or we would have had to have waited like some other holidaymakers.

Hotel is very old fashioned looking both from outside and inside. Lots of dark wood panelling made it look very 1960's. We had to pay a breakages deposit of £30 before they would give us the key to our room.

We also asked to hire a safety deposit box which cost 18 Euro for the week and another 25 Euro deposit to be refunded when we returned the key..??? We have travelled on lots of last minute deals and have been in all sorts of accomodation.

Our room was very basic, 2 bunkbeds and 2 single beds pushed together, the balcony was quite large but quite hard to eat on the table as it only sat at knee height. There is a traintrack at the rear which can be quite noisy at first but after the first couple of days you switch off to the noise from it. The kitchen is in something like a double wardrobe and has only 2 rings for cooking and a fridge. We tended to eat out at night and just have a sandwich in the room for brekkie and lunch.

We arrived on a Sunday morning and were informed the maids wouldn't be in until the Friday, we were also given only 1 x toilet roll as a courtesy and told we would need to buy more if we required it (never been anywhere that does that).

There were 4 x towels in the room but these were tiny and worn and dirty looking, if you want clean towels you take your old ones to the laundry every morning and exchange them. We were also informed that we had to deal with our own bins and empty them ourselves out the front of the hotel.

The pool is tiny, more like a puddle, we never used it. We went to the beach most days or to the Hotel Metropolitan where you could hire beds, the pool there was lovely if not very overcrowded. I was bitten on the legs arms and face by unknown creatures whilst on holiday, and so was my man on his arms.. don't know if this was sandfleas or anything more sinister...I did notice quite a few people with bites on their ankles as well.

The rooms in the Esmerelda are very stuffy, you can hire a fan for 15 Euros a week, toasters are also 15 Euros a week. They also take deposits for the pool cues..??? The entertainment was very poor apart from the Elvis nite. We had heard he was good and he didn't disappoint us... He was probably the best part of this hotels experience for us.

We never ate in the hotel we always went out. There is a nice wee bar just up to the right called Maurios who made excellent, reasonably priced food all home made, the guy who runs it is very pleasant and welcoming. Molly Malones was overpriced, The chip shop was not worth the money, the rugby tavern and the mucky duck are just typical english style pubs and not to our taste. We did get the bus into Salou a couple of times as well, but found it to be just like Blackpool with the sun and "lookey lookey" men !!! These guys and the chinese massage women are everywhere !!! It gets tedious after a while !!

We would not visit this hotel again, as i said previously, we always book last minute deals and I have paid far less in the past for more superior and modern hotels with better facilities (who do not make you buy your own toilet rolls)

Hotel dirty beds only changed twice in 14 days.

Swimming pool small but the children had a good time in it, but were disappointed that they could not have inflatables in the pool.

Most of the staff were very nice and helpful (shame about the reps).

Entertainment not much to talk about but we did meet some very nice people whilst on holiday.

Accommodation not good if you are planning on cooking during your stay kitchen very very small.

We recently had a lovely stay in the esmerelda.
The apartments were very basic but we paid very liitle to our previous holidays as it was a second time away this year.
although basis the apt was spacious and central to the resort and right across from the beach.

The hotel staff were lovely the bar staff were friendly and great to our kids.

The pool is small however we spent most ouir time at the beach and very kids just swam in the evenings when we headed back to the hotel.

while we were there we had our money stolen by pick pockets at the local bus station in tarragona and felt very silly as the rep had warned us at the welcome meeting. the rep was fantastic and she helped us get a money transfer and assisted us with police reports and made sure that it didnt ruin the rest of the holiday.

The reps and reception staff were very friendly and always on hand to help and they had patience of a saint when it came to dealing with some other guests that had paid peanuts for a late deal and were demanding a move and upgrade.

The bars down the road mucky duck and rugby tavern were a great place to do for an evening meal and it was great to go to the local waterpark and the themepark the kids loved it

will be returning next summer hopefully

Our holiday was booked by my children as a 50th Birthday present for my husband. On booking they were assured that as it was a special gift that the accommodation would be more than acceptable. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by other people telling us not to get off the coach as it was such a dump but however we thought that perhaps it was just exaggeration.

The entrance to the hotel is just beside the pool and so we had to manoeuvre ourselves and luggage around the large numbers of children playing directly in the entrance. The reception area is dark and very old fashioned, we were asked for a breakage deposit of 60euros before getting the key to what I can only describe as an over sized cupboard.

The Studio apartment consisted of two twin beds, two bunk beds, a bathroom and a kitchen in a cupboard. The room smelt fusty and my husband traced the smell to a mop left in a bucket in the corner of the kitchen which we then moved out onto the balcony. The toilet in the apartment leaked so that when you flushed it water escaped from around the base of the pan, and the shower caused water to leak into the kitchen. The towels were thin grey scraps of fabric that I would hesitate to use as cleaning rags. The decor was just awful, repairs to the furniture had been made using different types of wood and the overall impression was of a very rundown uncared for establishment.

We did complain to the rep and asked to be moved, we did suggest that we were prepared to pay for an upgrade however the rep stated that they had nowhere available and that she would perhaps try to get us another room elsewhere in the hotel but that did not happen. She did tell us that it was only a two star hotel and that facilities were basic but we have stayed in two star hotels before and there is no way that this place should even have a star rating. She then went home and was not back in the resort again during our holiday as she was ill and another rep had taken over. I suppose we should have made more of a fuss but since she had said there was nowhere else for us to go we decided to make the most of a bad lot and chose instead to only use the hotel as somewhere to sleep and spent our days and evenings away from the place.

The hotel was just across the road from the beach and I suppose a nice sea view would have perhaps compensated for the dingy room however our view was of the car park at the side of the hotel and the rubbish, broken furniture, discarded fridges etc and the back of another hotel.

We were fortunate that we did not receive any insect bites but quite a number of people on the second floor were bitten, I do hope that it was just mossies and not something more sinister.

On the morning of our departure the night porter told us that Thompson's will not be using the hotel again (I wonder why?) and that it is going to be sold and the new owners intend to carry out some changes. I think that it would need a major overhaul in order to bring it up to an acceptable standard.

Avid fans of continental freight train operations and the smell of sewage, need apply! Upon arrival we were greeted by the lovely smell, good job we had decided to go out that evening anyway.

It is equidistant from Salou and Cambrils (2 miles either way) but is a pleasant walk along the beach, which is a minute away. The grandiose facade of the hotel is a bit of an anti-climax, as inside the decor is definitely dated, classical late '70's i think.

Definitely don't go to cook! Very limited 4 gas rings, a fridge which when opened, is so close to the door and wall it turns the light switch on and off! Make sandwiches at your peril!

The maids didn't understand English properly, i.e. do not disturb, they only came twice in the week, which I feel is lucky in comparison to other people on here! The floor was gritty on arrival and also bedding was not changed at all, despite complaints.

The pool seems an afterthought, fit into the only place available, and don't wear goggles as you can see the bottom of the pool! I found a battery and many cracked tiles.

Entertainment was funny in a kitsch way, think Phoenix nights meets Butlins, I had a laugh anyway.

Some of the staff were great, the guy from St Helen's a good laugh and Jasper the Dutch barman was amusing. But the Manuel character was definitely the most rude person to work in a hotel, and I can take things with a pinch of salt, I know he offended most people!

Verdict: Alright if you just want somewhere to sleep that isn't a tent, however there are plenty of nice camp-sites with a probable 3 key rating up the road!

Don't bother if you are a family!

This hotel was dirty, smelly and full of dead moggies on the walls.

No toaster, you have to hire it at a cost of 22 euros per 14 days. We had no frying pan, no grille, no oven, the bath/shower does not empty properly.

Please do not go there. It is horrible.

When we got to the hotel we had to wait around in the bar as our room wasn't ready (despite it being 6pm). We were offered a drink but later found out we had to pay for it.

We got in the room and one of us had to sleep in bunk beds (not great for a single 25 year old). the bathroom was filthy with chips in the bath, towels weren't changed at all during the week. Also they don't supply toilet roll but luckily we were on ground floor so used bar toilets as refused to buy own loo roll.

Beds weren't cleaned either. Floor gritty on arrival. Kitchen is a closet with gas rings that don't work not that you'd want to cook in there anyway.

Pool tiny. Bar overpriced. Rep no good. Staff rude and even refused our safety deposit back until we removed a bag of rubbish which we'd tied up in the bathroom corner.

Heard the maids laughing all day but what did they actually do? Also decorated like my grans living room in reception with all tacky ornaments. Save your money guys.

The hotel was a dump. It needed a very good clean up.

On arrival we had to pay 60 euros (or 40 English pounds). There was no fan in our room and were told to pay 15 euros for 1 week and they were faulty.

The staff were mostly friendly except for 1 Spanish man who was always clock watching and the old woman who run the place. She could`ve done with a good bath.

The bar shut at midnight but the lights went out at 1.
The games room shut at eight and the pool tables were shut for 10.

The entertainment was always bingo mostly done by the night porter.

You had to take your rubbish out to the big waste bin provided on the main street.

We had a main road very close by and a train track behind the hotel which run constantly for 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

There were frequent salesmen and women flogging cheap and fake tat and the staff never asked them to leave.

Pool was never cleaned and half of the sunloungers were broken and the hotel was falling to bits.

The balcony door was broken. Electrical lights hanging out. Self catering holiday but the kitchen (if you call it that) had just 2 rings and nothing else. Spent 1 full day of holiday cleaning the 1 room apartment which was for 4 people.

The good things about the holiday were we escaped everyday by going out. On day of leaving went with the old women to inspect the room and it was cleaner than when we arrived. Also went so she couldn`t plant things in the room to stop us getting our money back as we`d heard of that happening to other guests.

I reiterate everything that has been said by Bev Bray and Steve Williams. After reading their reports I realised we were there the same week, and had spoken to Bev.

Almost everyone staying there were of the same opinion. Our studio floor was covered in bits of grit etc. A curtain hanging off. The lightbulbs blew the first day, were fixed 2 days later, then went again, so for rest of holiday we had to rely on bathroom light and lights from the street.

The kitchen (when we found it in the cupboard) was awful, with a dirty mop and bucket in the corner, no plug to the sink.

We ate out for every meal as we could not use the crockery, and cutlery etc, we did not even use the kettle.

The toilet did not flush properly, and we had to fill the bucket to flush it.

The maids did not come in to clean and only changed the towels the day before we came home.

There was a smell near the lifts and on the corridor on the fourth floor.

The location was very good, very near to the beach.
The entertainment wasn't too bad, and I must admit we had a good laugh.

We met some lovely people, and that, along with the weather made our holiday. Had this place been in England I think we would have gone straight home.

We did not expect 5 star accomodation, but feel sure for the amount we had paid we should have had a much better place.

We arrived as a family of four and booked into our room, to find a)No toilet roll. b)The toilet didn't flush. Not very good with two young children. We complained and the toilet did not get fixed until four days into our holiday. In the meantime we had to put our hands into the cistern to flush the toilet (very nice!)

We went self catering but their was absolutely no way we would have cooked in our kitchens. They were filthy, cutlery dirty. A dog should not have to eat of their plates. Our rooms were not cleaned once in the week we were there and there was a lot of hair in the bath plug hole.

The smell near the lifts almost made you bring your dinner up, and that was allowing for the fact if you could use the lifts, as we could not open the doors on our floor.

Staff most unhelpful and we must have had the worst holiday rep employed by Thomson, if you ever saw her that is.

We arrived and proceeded to check in at reception, I glanced into the bar area and was warmly met with a welcome of somebody shouting welcome to faulty towers to which I just laughed off.

When we went to our room I was shocked 2 small bunk beds(for two tall 13 year old girls to sleep in), a kitchen area in a cupboard and 2 small single beds. The smell when we opened the kitchen area was hideous it smelt like rotten eggs and even out in the corridor. The kettle had green mould in and there was tiles missing from the walls.

We were there a week in which the maids came in twice to supposedly clean the apartments and change the bedding, the most they did was change the towels, the bedding was not changed at all!!!!!!

We asked to be moved to another room or another hotel as the girls could not be expected to sleep in such cramped beds, we were told we would have to pay 180 English pounds to be moved to a room in the same apartments with a pullout sofa bed instead of bunk beds to which we declined.

The Thompsons rep to which we complained to several times was uncooperative and lapsadasical not even knowing the price of the local buses.

A word of warning do not got to these apartments they will seriously ruin your holiday.

Hotel and rooms not very clean.

Did eat in at hotel one evening but never again as took 1 hour for my meal to be served which by this time my husband and children had already finished theirs.

When I did go to eat it unfortunately it was cold.

Hotel location is a plus point for this hotel.

We found the majority of the staff very friendly-maybe because we know them but a couple of them very rude.

The entertainment was actually very good, just a shame people didn't stay to find out.

We as a family have been to this hotel 5 times. The first four years were fantastic-as to why we kept going back but I would not recommend this hotel to anyone after this year unless drastic changes are made.

I am pleased we booked for next year to stay in different accommodation but same resort.

When we arrived there were only two rooms available for 3 families of 4. We were expected to fit 8 into a tiny studio apt till the manager arrived in the morning, but that was resolved. The kitchen facilities were a cupboard which was filthy with a rusty drainer and old fashioned decor with no extractor fan. We had a small baby with us and couldn’t make food for her due to the state of the kitchen.

The rooms were filthy no maid service at all was told that we have a mop and bucket in our room to clean, the towels were thread bare changed twice weekly if you were lucky. The whole place stank fusty and was dirty, studio rooms were tiny and to cap it all an express train runs every 10 mins from 6am passed the back of apartments.

Plus points good atmosphere in the bar and 2 min walk to beach.

This hotel was self catering and thankfully we did not have to use the kitchen facilities as we ate out at night. The kitchen was what can only be described as a cupboard which throughout the our whole stay had a suspicious smell of gas. The kitchen along with the rest of the tiny apartment was dirty on arrival. The actual hotel building however was not too bad.

The menu in the hotel was very basic and for any vegetarians or people with special diets there ws nothing. The food I did try was nothing to shout about anyway.

Due to the location of the hotel in between Cambrills and Salou there were not that many Restaurants but if desperate there were places to eat. The only thing that is good about the location is that it is right next to the beach.

Some of the staff in the hotel were very friendly. However the majority seemed totally disinterested in what they were doing.

A positive for the Esmeralda was the entertainment. With karaokes, quizzes, bingo. etc something different every night.

I can seriously say that I would never visit this hotel again even if I was getting a free holiday.

And please any one with children if you really must go do not book a Studio for 4!! There isn't enough room to swing a cat

After saving for 2 years to take me and my 5 children abroad for the first time. We were sadly met by what the people above have described. Something should have been changed by now.

The kichens are not big enough to swing a cat let alone cook for 6 people. Staff were nice and beach was close, pool was a joke it was very small and dirty.

Never ever would I return to these apartments, even if they were giving them away free.

very untidy, staff not helpfull. self catering facilites and kitchen equipment poor. noise level at night not acceptable due to noisey people with no respect for people and familys trying to sleep. bar area should be closed at a given time night. security not to clever should be upgraded with more people on duty or with a security company. no play area for children, pool to small. overall the place needs upgraded and the managment need a more professional approach to customers. i feel this place is vastly overpriced by travel companies and thomsons

This was our fourth time at the Esmeralda and we just love everything about it.

The food is very nice and the kids love it as it's all English.

We found the hotel clean and our room was clean and tidy.

The location of the hotel is excellent. What more could you ask for with the beach across the road and bus stops just outside to take you wherever you want to go.

The hotel staff are second to none. Absolutely brilliant with all, they couldn't do enough for you and very very friendly.

Entertainment excellent for families of all ages with plenty for the kids to join in and adults alike.

We have been to this hotel four times and will always keep going back. Due back there in June 2005.

Oh my goodness where do I start?? When we arrived I found a rusty blood stained bic razor on the bathroom floor, so I complained to the manager, it stayed there the rest of the day and when we returned to the appartment the next day from the beach, the cleaner had picked it up and put it on the shelf with my stuff!!!!!!!

The self catering facilities are inadequate and every day we had to beg a cutlery item from a maid/cleaner.
The entertainment was absolutely dreadful, and the bar didnt impress us either.

It looked so dirty we chose not to eat there and the pool was tiny, couldnt get near it.
This hotel was dirty and I would never ever stay there again.

Only good point was it was over the road from the beach, but hardly any other entertainment unless you fancied an hours walk.

The hotel Esmerelda was a very nice and friendly hotel.

The staff were excellent but maybe that’s because we knew them anyway. As for the food, the kids loved it which was helpful to us adults as we didn’t have to go looking around to satisfy all of them.

We agree that the pool may be small but the pools in the nearby hotels are much larger and you don’t have to pay any fee.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and we decided to go back this June.

On arrival at the Esmaralda apartments (we arrived on time), our rooms were not ready so we had to wait 2 hours in the bar sweating in our travelling clothes until we could go up to our room. The floors were still soaking wait but apart from that everything else seemed alright. This was a slight old stench but nothing too bad.

The staff were ok, not too friendly or too helpful mind. Our room actually had no air conditioning so we had to hire a fan from reception which was quite expensive. The food from the bar was not very nice, but that's not a problem as there are several other restaurants and bars near by.

The entertainment was average, and a little cheesy. The rep was at the hotel regularly and gave us information about all of the extra things we could do (there is a great theme park nearby).

The pool was quite small and had a lot of small children swimming in it, but there are several other hotels nearby with bigger swimming pools which you can swim in for free.

So basically, thank goodness for the other hotels around it for the guests to escape to! I am going back to the Esmeralda next month so i'll see how it goes!
