Airtours did not own these ships then, they had sold them to Louis/Thomson. They tried to fob me off, they accused me of just trying to claim compenation, and as for their customer services are they are well trained in art of rudness. NEVER AGAIN. |

I was so glad to here that the sunbird was being sold, perhaps the next owners will do something about the whole of the bad situation. |

THE RESTAURANT MANAGER WAOULD SEND ANY FOOD BACK IF YOU ONLY COMPLAINED ABOUT IT BEING COLD! No one knew the real reason for not calling at Belem. The Staff gave one story, the Tour management gave another, and the Capt; gave another . much to the pursuers staff anoyance. The Flight home was the flight from hell. a South Americam plane used for short haul, was used for the 14 hour flight home and the seats were far too close together( used for a much smaller race than us Brits. On the whole, just make shure that if you fly with Airtours or My Travel, make sure the return flight is with that companyIf Not be prepared fpr a legal battle in which the company refuse to answer your mail. |

We found the cabin wery small, the food very bland in the dining room and as for the lido i have seen better work's canteens. When it came to the sunbed's you had to be up at 6am to get one.One stop was missed ,then we were asked to reuse the towels and cut down on the use of water as it was getting low, then the cans of beer ran out, need i say we would not be going on it again, they say you get what you pay for this is the most expensive we have ever been on and the least value for money in the 5 other cruises we have done with other company's. The only bright side was the cabin girl who kept the cabin clean and one of the waiters in the dining room they were both good the rest of the waiters made you feel like they were doing you a favour, after going to the show 3 times we gave up as they appeared to be entertaining them selves not the passengers. |

Highlights The brilliant tour and tour guide at Casablanca, and Omar, the smiling waiter
Biggest disappointments. No Celebrations for Haloween and Guy Falkes Night - both passed unremarked. -Most of the ports we visited during our 10 day cruise were shut.
Sunbird was an beautiful but unfriendly ship. Most of the waiters and cabin staff were grea t but, unlike other cruises I’ve been on and read about, the ship’s officers and entertainment crew did not socialise with the passengers. The officers were hardly ever to be seen, and, when they were around, they avoided eye contact - mostly because they had their noses stuck in the air.
The entertainments crowd did their turns and disappeared again, and the sexist joke about it being a man’s cruise, because all the ports were shut ant the women couldn’t go shopping got a bit wearing on the umteenth repetition, so did the one about how many more meals the passengers would be able to manage before they left the ship.
.
On other ships there always seemed to be a crew member at hand if you were struggling with something, but here, unless another passenger came to their aid, then they just had to manage. A lot of the regular crew had been replaced by East Europeans most didn’t seem very comfortable on the ship some of whom were extremely rude and snappy to passengers.
There weren’t nearly enough chairs and loungers on deck. I saw a lorry load of scrap loungers being taken away at Tenerife without being replaced so presumably there are even fewer now!
Our Itinerary - FLAVOURS OF SPAIN
SATURDAY: trouble free flight from Cardiff to Palma.
SUNDAY: day in Ibiza, but being Sunday nearly everything was shut.
MONDAY: day in Alacante, but being All Saints Day nearly everything was shut - even SPAR.
TUESDAY: day at sea
WEDNESDAY day at Malaga
THURSDAY: short day in Gibralta
FRIDAY: Casablanca and a tour to the Hassan 11 Mosque.(Possibly not the best destination on a Friday during Ramadam)
SATURDAY: day at sea.
SUNDAY: Funchal, but being Sunday nearly everything was shut.
MONDAY day at sea
TUESDAY Tenerife. Due to some confusion and technical difficulties at the port we were not able to leave the ship to do any sight-seeing.
CABIN: Our cabin was in a good position mid ship on deck 3. The shower room was very compact, but had plenty of space for toiletries including a very welcome set of corner shelves in the shower which also had a drying line across the back and a flexible shower head with loads of hot water. The cabin was quite small, but had plenty of storage 3 wardrobe doors one had an extra rail for suits. We had one fixed settee/bunk and one pull-down bunk with a shelf over. The shelf protuded almost halfway across the bed, so you wouldn’t want to sit up in a hurry! We also had a writing desk, cross-bed table, large mirror, window, cupboard with a safe (£1.00 per day hire charge for the key) 4 drawers and a window.
FOOD: Some was fantastic, especially the soups and the shellfish. The breakfast on Lido Deck was usually over-cooked and lukewarm. Seven Seas was much better, with superb kippers, but it was often really hard to get served with what you wanted, most passengers just went without tea or juice, or got onions and potatoes on their kippers even when they didn’t want them, but others were really upset that they had no mushroom and ran out of cornflakes.
ENTERTAINMENT: Both caberet acts, Bernie Flint (Opportunity Knocks winner) and Jayne Curry were very good. The piano bar was very popular, and Oklahoma Lounge had an excellent group including 2 girl singers. There were also shows, quizes, deck games, kids clubs etc.. Prizes were usually a Sunbird drinking straw, which I thought was a bit mean :o(
There were quite a few comfy sofas dotted around the ship, all of which were put to good use throughout the cruise. The lift doors were Art Deco, with a shell motif repeated around the ship. There were plenty of places for smokers to relax, and lounges were well designed.
I had to visit the ship’s doctor during the voyage due to a severe case of conjunctivitis. I’d never had it before, and didn’t know what to expect. A visit to the medical centre cost £28.00. I was seen almost immediately, and both the doctor and the nurse were very caring, gentle and reassuring. My temperature and blood pressure were taken, and I was given two kinds of drops in the surgery, and more to take away with me. The drops cost £2.82 and began working immediately. We were really pleased to have the facility there, and considered the money well spent.
When it was time to leave a lift load of us got shouted at for inadvertently taking the middle lift to the gangplank on deck 1 which came out in the crew’s quarters, instead of the forward lift which didn’t. Our luggage was laid out in a glass shed. Although it had been properly colour coded, a lot of the cases were mixed up and took ages to find. We finally found one of our bags at the extreme opposite end of the shed then had to wait in a queue 30/40 minutes for coaches Luckily the last person managed to board before the rain got really heavy.
Sorry to have given a negative review of this beautiful ship. Most of the passengers I spoke to had cruised on the Sunbird before, most of them several times. They were really upset at the changes they found.

Firstly to say that obviously we have only seen other ships externally (and you do see a few in the popular ports)so have no means of comparison but the Sunbird is a nice ship. It is very clean, if a little dated I think, hopefully they will take care of that in the refurb at the end of the year. The food is excellent. It is half the fun of cruising, and we ate in the Formal restaurant every night. It is a little luck of the draw as to who you sit with as you are stuck with them all week, we sat with a young couple who worked as a chef and head waitress and were very condescending about the food which spoilt it a little for us. (We thought the food was excellent!) The lido is not really our style, but was handy if you wanted something quick. Breakfasts were good but slow in the waiter served part of the main restaurant. Near the end of the session they would lose all drive to please and you could be waiting ages for your meal. Buffet was a better option if you were in a hurry.
The staff were courtious, the captain odd, one particular waiter very friendly, but I did have to ask specifically for a napkin trick - last time they seemed more eager to please. They were all a bit gutted about the changeover I think, and it did show.
The entertainment was variable. Last time it was excellent, but due to sheer bad fortune I imagine, the second week we had exactly the same two performers - with the same acts - as last year, so that was a pain. Also the cabaret shows were exactly the same both weeks - which we were amazed at - the number of two weekers there I couldn't believe the repetition. I really spoiled our second week.
I would have to say that by the end of the two weeks we were exhausted (both picked up nasty colds near the end which were circulating and were not helped by the tiredness). We did trips most days (bar tunis don't bother). So our wallets had taken a bashing and we ended off sick the first day back at work. Next time I am going to do a Cruise and stay to relax. I know it is disapointing to have to cook for yourself, and you don't feel quite as frantic to have a good time and see everyhing!
That has turned out to be a fairly negative review - don't get me wrong, I love cruising and once you start you are hooked - but I think I am going to give airtours a miss for the forseable future.

The crew...our cabin attendant (Sali) was very attentive, and our waiters in the Seven Seas (Jonathon and Asri) were first class...nothing seemed too much trouble for them, and the way they looked after the children was amazing....Jonathon with his origami creations for our little girl was really a star performer.
Meals were fine....and if our waiters felt the kids were not enjoying theirs, they were soon tempting them with something different.(Without asking....a bit diffent to the sort of service we are used to in our own country....)
The lido was adequate for breakfast, but could be a little hectic.
Ships officers seemed a little distant, and Pursers desk staff were a little surly.
Bar/waiting staff were pleasant and helpful...Drinks prices were reasonable...the all in drinks package is unneccessary if you are not going to be too heavy on the booze..Photographers were a pain in the neck and a rip off.
Itinery was great, we did 1/2 day tours of Tunisia,Pisa and Barcelona, stayed on the beach and immediate locality at Villefranche and Civitavecchia...thought that the oganised tours were a bit overpriced, and would probably do our own thing next time.
Regrettably there were no outside cabins suitable for a family group....this could be a bit claustrophobic, our friends outside cabin was far better.
All in all, a good holiday, generally good value and service, the kids loved it, and yes we'd do it again.

All the staff have and were absolutely wonderful and It was a great honour for us to board and be welcomed by our names as they remember us...Unfortunately the last time in August was different the teen club staff obviously didn't like teenagers as they made a point of ruining the boys holiday. There were only a small number of teenagers that gathered in the disco area but my son was the target....it all started the 2nd night the pool night getting told off for "jumping in the pool" then in the disco for "kissing" one of which they were all doing....Amanda Matthews didn't like my son and would never speak to us to sort this out. We and other parents have put in a report but as to date not heard anything.....the last straw was when the other children approached her to ask why he was thrown out so much was " he is just an arsehole".........!
I can say no more......! never never have we had this attitude on a P/O cruise, its obivious you need to address your entertainment staff (teenagers) other then that Andy top man he knows us from old.
We are booked on the Carousel for May her last voyage as Carousel this being our 2nd time on the ship with friends we met on the Sunbird 2002. As for children entertainment we shall look at other cruise ships. |

Two weeks sailing around the Med on the Sunbird and the first time with Airtours. We found the organisation at embarkation etc well arranged as we were one of the early flights arriving.Passengers arriving later afternoon had longer waits in queues.
We found the ship slightly better than most of the other cruise we had been on (mainly Thomsons) and on par overall with the Norwiegien Crown allthough the Crown was a little plusher.
We had a cabin on A deck outside fairly compact but adaquate one fixed bed and one fold down from the wall, towards the front of ship (no noise of engines).
The food was very good 4* quality, good choice for breakfast and real english style bacon, you had to order fried eggs but they arrived quickly. You had a choice of waiter serve or buffet in the restaurant,or you could eat buffet al-fresco in the Lido at the rear of the ship.Lunch was served at both venues waiter in the main and buffet at the Lido.(excellent salad and allways a good fish available.
Service was allways good in the main restaurant on an evening, well varied and well served. There was also inbetween eating am and pm and two gala midnight feasts per week, one a chocoholics.(these were the two formal night, although every body did not stick to the dress code.
Drinks were reasonably priced about £2 a pint and £2.50 for cocktails. There is an opertunity to take the DRINKS UNLIMITED PACKAGE first weel £129 but reduced to £109 the second week.We took it the first but paid as you go the second and I recond that we would have just about broke even.If this had been booked before we went it would have only been £99.(better value).
The shows overall were quite good, a variation of guest singers/commedians (can any one remember BERNIE FLINT of OPPERTUNITY KNOCKS fame).and the ships resident entertainers/dance troup. The cruise director in my opinion was the best we had ever had on any ship and his understudies also first class.Other entertainmet included regular quizzes, game shows, bingo, and lots of deck sports and games, dance lessons and feature films shown daily in the main concert room so there was allways plenty to do if you stayed on board. Also a well run casino.
There never seamed to be any squabbles with sunbeds, allways plenty available and load of deck space to use them.
The ship itself DID need a little tiding up in several areas but on the hole was kept clean and in fairly good order(it is getting refurbished towards the end of the year).
There are two small duty free shops on board.a beauty salon/haidressers,an internet room, gym, and several good bars(the CLIPPER bar particullary nice).
The ships staff were excellent and served well, only one of the pursers staff was a little uncurtious.
Most of the ports of call could be done on your own and maps/guides and places of interest were pointed out at the port talk the day before.(organised tour were quite expensive). Most ports the ship docked in port only one tender to shore destination.
On the day of disembarking, all flights leaving after 6pm had their luggage checked in and weighed on board and they were very strict with OVERWEIGHT cases and charged for excess.Their cases were sent off to the airport and you never saw them untill you arrived back in Britain. All those travelling before 6pm checked in as normal with case at Palma.(still strict with excess weight). Our two cases were 5kg over between them and they were going to charge us ,until we pointed out we had no hand luggage, so they waived the charge.
Over all a nice well run ship good curtious crew and officers, had an excellent cruise and would certainly sail with them again, although it is going to be a Thomsons ship next year.

The cleanliness of the ship was good, with your maid coming twice a day.
The ship food was great. Their were 2 restaurants, the Lido cafe and the main restaurant, in the Lido, you just took food in a buffet style. In the restaurant, you got a menu which was changed everyday. Every breakfast it was a different menu, same with lunch, dinner, desert and even supper. 1 night the Sunbird staff had a treat for us, a "chocoholics midnight feast" it was great, all the chocolate you could eat, carved chocolate, you name it. It had it.
The ship staff were just the most charming and friendly people. The waiter for the dinner table was great, he even made a rose out of scratch for the ladies in the family.
The entertainment was also great. Lively actors always up for anything. The comedian was funny, we met him in the left and he cracked a few jokes when he wasn't even working, what a nice guy!
The other facilities on the ship are great. These include the gym, pools, steam rooms, kids lounge, casino, photography department, bars, sports deck, beuty salon, night club and more.
The shore excursions were something special. The guided tours were great, although we only done one out of all the stops. We done the rest of the places our self which was always easy to do. The itinary was just great, i really did enjoy every place we went!
The last thing i would just like to say is that i definetly would consider travelling with sun cruises/ airtours again as this cruise was the best! I loved thes ship, i loved the facilities, i loved the staff, i loved the holiday! |

This ship is destined for Thomsons next year and it looks like they are letting it run down a bit. { burst cushions in the cabin, burst chairs in the dining room, and woodwork on decks starting to peel and blister. }
We thought the standard of food in the dining room was fine, but the buffet breakfasts and lunches in the Lido was poor.
The entertainment on board was mediocre to say the least. The guest cabaret artistes were o.k. but the ships own theatre company were very amateurish with poor productions.
The saving grace were the waiters, waitresses and cabin stewards, who, even when told during the cruise that their wages were going to be slashed by the new company carried on with their usual total professionalism and smiling manner.
This was my 6th cruise with Airtours and I thought I would give them another go after having been on P&O ships for the last four cruises. But i'm afraid that for roughly the same money P&O is far superior and I won't be back with Airtours. |
